students are learning about
the environment with the
help of a worm farm that
sits on a teacher’s desk.
The tiny worm farm,
known as a ‘‘Wiggo Pod’’, is
transparent and takes food
waste from the students.
The waste turns into soil
in about two weeks.
The pod’s self-watering
system can then grow a seed
into a plant.
The Wiggo Pod comes
with five weeks of lesson
plans. Teacher Kathy
McGuigan said that if the
pod is a success, the school
is likely to buy more.
‘‘For example, students
can do up graphs of the
plant’s growth’’ she said.
‘‘It’s in the classroom,
so students can track
the progress.
‘‘I had a student tell me
the other day it’s a bit like
having a classroom pet.’’
The pod also comes with
beans which have a tiny

‘‘It’s just a very engaging
way to teach students,’’ Mrs

A GROUP of Collaroy Plateau Community
Kindergarten preschool students visited
Collaroy Plateau Public School this week so
they could familiarise themselves.
In the lead up to enrolments for school in
2013, many of the children from the kindergarten will visit prospective schools with
their preschool teachers as part of their
transition to school program.
The children met the principal and
observed a class in action.
Many of the children’s parents also
attended a getting ready for school night.
