visit the library
• Paper documents
available at Town Hall
• Info on our website

• Need for up-to-date, unbiased, independent
information
• September 2014
•
Expert in Environmental Health, Directorate of Public
Health of the Outaouais Region
• November 2015
•
Dr. Brigitte Pinard, Directorate of Public Health of the
Outaouais Region
Public Presentations on Radon
•
•
•
•
•
What is radon?
Why is it important?
How do you measure?
What if levels in air are above 200 Bq/m3?
How to mitigate and how much does it
costs?
• What about the groundwater from wells?
Public Presentations on Radon
• Collaborated with experts:
• Dr. Brigitte Pinard, Directorate of Public
Health of the Outaouais Region
• Dr. Jean-Claude Dessau, Ministry of Health
and Social Services (MSSS) of Quebec
• Mathieu Brossard, Health Canada
• Marcel Brascoupé, MB Radon Solutions
(C-NRPP certified mitigator)
Modified Recommendation for Measurement
• Typical recommendation for testing in air:
Measure the lowest level of the house where
someone spends at least 4 h per day
• This does not take into account radon
dissolved into well water!
Modified Recommendation for Measurement
• New recommendation:
Measure the air of all inhabited levels of the
house
• Winter 2015-2016:
n = 45 houses tested on 2 or 3 floors
• Results to come!
Additionnal Training
• Residents
• Municipal employees: Environment, urban
planning and buildings, reception…
• MRC’s Environment Coordinator
• Director general, also President of the
Association of Municipal Director Generals of
Québec (ADGMQ)
Regulation
• Discussing building regulation
• Project to change requirements of our
construction by-law, to include provisions for
new constructions
• Ready-to-use models of regulation or by-law
available for Municipalities?
Training of Municipal Employees
• COMBEQ (Corporation of municipal officers in
building and environment of Quebec): could
be relevant to offer a training?
Strong Points
• Residents visit the Municipalities = point of
access to offer affordable tests and
information
• Easy for the residents
• Very effective especially if someone can
provide explanations to people
Challenges and Solutions
• Need for Training (elected officials and
especially employees) and links with the
actors
• Get involved in your community!
• Kit of standardized information for municipal
stakeholders to start a program easily?
• Need resources to analyze the data
• Collaboration with researchers!
Financial support
• High cost of mitigation measures
• Owners are asking for financial support
• Tax credit?
