Message from the Principal Dear Parents, Friday 18th September 2015 Thank you for reading this Newsletter. Haze It has been a difficult week for many organisations this week coping with the unwelcome haze. Thank you to all the Tenby community for the patience and support shown as the School observed the Haze Policy, and adhered to Ministry guidelines. Last week in Ipoh, training and tuition took place for more SEP(KL) staff which will continue for the next nine months. Congratulations to those Tenby SEP(KL) staff, photographed above who successfully completed the Course last year who received Certificates at a special Ceremony at the Tropicana Golf and Country Club last Saturday. Malaysia Day Parade The School was sad to cancel the Parade this morning because of the haze, but looks forward to some special Assemblies led by SST to celebrate Malsysia Day. 1 ILMU Launch The School was superbly represented earlier this week by School musicians at the Launch Ceremony of the ILMU Education Group at the Bank Museum in the company of the Minister of Higher Education. After the fantastic results in 2015 we are now focusing on improving grades even further in 2016. With 30 student’s starting Year 12 this year, Tenby Sixth Form has really taken off. A presence of Year 12’s in secondary has really made a difference to the general feel of the school. The Year 9/10/11 Parents Information evenings have been well received by attending parents and all parents have received the information PowerPoint for reference. Year 11 students started the one to one Careers Guidance this week to support them with A level choices at Tenby next year. Secondary sporting fixtures have been affected by the Haze this week and this will continue over the weekend. The Secondary school is getting ready for camps with all staff and students attending it is always and great adventure and a chance to bond, new learn skills and for all individuals to step outside their comfort zone. Our first ever Model United Nations CCA started last week with a growing number of students being involved in this fantastic project. Tenby has already set a date for its 2 nd MUN conference in June 2016. Please check Parent Forum dates on calendar so we can listen to feedback and questions. I would also encourage parents to complete the online questionnaire sent by Miss Darshini at the start of the year. 7 Harpist Bryan Lee Kit Meng is an active and ardent orchestral player; in addition to being one of the founding members of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, he has played with the Penang Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Music Makers on their tour to Penang, the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Orchestra, with which he played with renowned tenor Jose Carreras, and with the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre Orchestra and Choir. He was also selected to be a member of the 2010 Youth Olympics Games Orchestra. Bryan is a frequent freelancer with professional ensembles such as the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra of Malaysia, Petronas Performing Arts Group, and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra; he performed with the latter in their recent appearance at the 2011 Beijing Music Festival. Tenby International School Peripetetic Music Program His recent performance of Bruch's Scottish Fantasy at Esplanade Concert Hall won him a review by Dr. Marc Rochester as "one of the brightest stars of the performance". The Straits Times (Singapore) also described his playing in the same concert as "warm and beautifully projected, bringing a much needed aura of gracefulness to the performance". The Edge (Malaysia) wrote that “Bryan Lee is so talented it is almost intimidating”. Bryan was a prize winner in the First SingaporeMalaysia Harp Competition. Besides orchestras, Bryan is also an enthusiastic chamber music player; he performs in several chamber ensembles, the most notable ones being Noel Trio, which won the 2nd Prize in the Open Division of the First Singapore Ensemble Competition 2011, and Sen 森 Trio, which held a successful recital at the Esplanade Recital Studio in 2014. Dr. Chan Tou Liang wrote in the Straits Times (Singapore) that “Lee’s gentle demeanour belied the virtuosity… create(d) the dreamy, other-worldly soundscape”. Bryan is a holder of a Bachelors Degree (Honours) from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore with full scholarship under the tutelage of Gulnara Mashurova, Principal Harpist of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. His previous mentors have included Sebastien Horrer, the former Principal Harpist of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, his wife Marianne Horrer, and Chu Yee Chern. He has also taken lessons with Xavier de Maistre, Prof. Florence Sitruk, who wrote that Bryan has “beautiful sound (and) flawless technique”, Dan Yu, and Alice Giles. Bryan’s ambition is to make the harp more familiar and recognisable throughout Malaysia. He is a harp teacher privately, and in various music schools in the Klang Valley, Penang, and Singapore. He also performs at various events such as weddings, product launches, openings, and ceremonies. 8 Library READ 9 10 Tenby MADD (Music, Art, Design & Drama) TIS Secondary Rehearsals have already begun for this term’s Secondary production ‘Aladdin’.
