“God help me. Please take this fear from me. I don’t know what to do. This has been
going on for so long. Nothing seems to go my way. I am tired of being scared. I can’t
take it anymore. Do you hear me God? Do you even care? I have cried out to you so
many times, but I am still trapped in this fear. Even when I am not scared I expect
something bad is just around the corner. I am always waiting for the other shoe to fall.
Please God, please help me, deliver me and set me free…”

ave you ever prayed a similar prayer? Do you live with a
fearful expectation that something bad could happen at any
moment? Is there a part of your life that just does not line
up with the Word of God and no matter how you try you cannot
seem to break free from the fearful or sinful pattern? If the answer is
yes to any of these questions then you are dealing with a stronghold.
In the Bible a stronghold is indicative of a militarily defendable
position. If the devil has a stronghold within your life, a position
that he can defend and in which he remains, it is because he has a
spiritual right to be there. He has been granted access. It is a matter
of spiritual authority. The devil cannot be in a place without having
been given authority to be there. To destroy Satan‘s stronghold in
your life is a matter of removing Satan’s spiritual right to be there.
But, before we do that we need to understand exactly how does a
stronghold form in your life? Satan cannot be where he does not have
spiritual authority to be. He is not capable of running through your
life willy-nilly wreaking havoc without having been granted access.
Satan cannot curse you. He does not have the authority to curse
you. He tempts you in order to get you to sin. Sin is disobedience
and disobedience brings on the curse when you embrace the sin and
make it your lifestyle.
A stronghold forms when you deny the sin in your life and you
make the sin your lifestyle. Your denial can be intentional or it can
be unintentional. Intentional denial will come from intentional sin.
Intentional sin normally occurs with a rationalization as to why God’s
Word does not apply to you as it pertains to your sin. An example of
this can be rationalizing that lusting after pornography does not hurt
anybody since it is a private matter and you are not involving another
person. But, the Word of God says it is sin to lust.
Since the beginning of time Satan has gained access to people
through temptation by getting people to doubt God’s Word. Satan
did this with Adam and Eve causing them to doubt God’s Word. Adam
and Eve believed the devil’s lie that God had somehow withheld
something from them; something that they deserved; something to
which they were entitled. Therefore, they ate the fruit of knowledge
which God had forbidden them to eat. They broke God’s command
and it was called sin. It is still sin when you break God’s command
not matter how justified you feel.
When you succumb to this tactic of the enemy, to doubt God’s
Word as it applies to your sin, not only is it sin, but you have now
assumed the position of being the judge of God’s Word. You have
placed yourself in the position of deciding what is the Word of God
and what is not the Word of God. People do this all the time feeling
entitled to their feelings and they think nothing of it. They want to
believe God’s Word as it applies to salvation, but they will quickly
deny His Word as it applies to their sin.
An example of unintentional denial of God’s Word or unintentional
sin can come from a betrayal by somebody that you love deeply.
Initially you were the hurt child and did nothing wrong. But, being
unable to admit the hurt and being unable to confront the offender
you withdrew or detached from him or her and you began to try
to protect yourself. In time your hurt and your anger mutates into
wrath. At this point you are no longer the innocent victim. You have
broken the command of God and allowed the sun to set on your
wrath.
Ephesians 4:26-27 (NKJV)
“Be angry, and do not sin:” do not let the sun go down on your wrath,
nor give place to the devil.
When you are filled with wrath it causes your sun to set. You are in
darkness and you will not be able to see it. Also, notice that in your
darkness you have given a place to Satan. That place is a stronghold.
It is a stronghold from which the devil torments you. You gave him
that place, but you will be unable to see it because of the darkness
and because you feel you have a right to judge the one that hurt you.
1 John 2:9-11 (NKJV)
He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness
until now. He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there
is no cause for stumbling in him. But he who hates his brother is
in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is
going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
Notice the agreement in this passage in 1 John and Paul’s letter to
the Ephesians. Both letters are epistles and written to the church.
Both letters agree that a believer that is full of wrath or hatred will
be in darkness. In darkness they cannot see their sin. They can only
see their offender’s sin.
Initially these people were the offended party, but then their anger
mutated into wrath and they now feel justified to hate their offender.
Sometimes they will know and can see that they hate, but most of
the time they will be blinded to their hatred.
“Oh no Pastor, I don’t hate him. I have just had a little bit of bitterness
towards him,” she said.
I asked, “And how long have you been experiencing this slight
bitterness?”
She closed one eye and looked heavenward as she reflected for
a moment and as she did the mental math and then she replied
matter-of-factly, “about 35 years.”
People within the church know that hatred is the sin of murder
(1 John 3:15). But, they feel justified in their feelings towards the
person that offended them. Therefore, they rationalize that it is
not hatred. It is only a “slight bitterness.” Besides, I have already
prayed to forgive him not realizing they are the one that needs to
be forgiven.
If you feel you have the right to judge the person and you feel
entitled to feelings of bitterness in reality you hate them. If you
recall the offender or the way in which he offended you and the
bitterness wells back up, you hate him. All the prayers in the world
to forgive your offender will not set you free. You must confess your
sin, not his, to be set free.
In blindness you are denying the Word of God as it pertains to your
sin. You have become the judge of the Word of God. You are in
darkness. You have given place to Satan and all the while you point
your finger at your offender. Nothing will get better in your life until
you repent. But how can you repent when you are in darkness and
cannot see that the darkness is your fault?
People invariably will concentrate on the fear that is present in their
lives as in the opening paragraph pleading with God to take the fear
from them when they have given place to the devil. But, to bring the
devil’s stronghold to an end you must shut down the devil’s right to
be there. That requires repentance.

Whose Eyes Are You
Seeing Through?
by Karen Parks
L
ately we have been bombarded with news reports
of deception, corruption and cover-ups in our
government that are causes for alarm and yes,
anger. Other recent stories bring sadness and cause
us to weep for the loss of innocent lives. It’s almost
overwhelming. We can’t escape the news, nor should
we, but it is important whose eyes we are looking
through at the many disturbing reports. Do we look
through the eyes of politicians, news reporters or
celebrities? What about looking through God’s eyes? I
promise you God is not in heaven wringing His hands
over the news reports. And you know what? NONE of
them took Him by surprise. He’s bigger than ALL of
it – all of the lies, the targeting by the IRS, the leaks and
the cover-ups. I believe it is God answering our prayers
- exposing the corruption. It is up to us to continue to
ask God to reveal truth and pray for wisdom to know
what to do with the truth. We cannot sit back and take
a fatalistic view of what is happening in our world. We
cannot become spiritually apathetic or complacent.
It is a time for courage. We must be willing to be
uncompromising, to stand up for our beliefs – to speak
up for truth – to do our part as citizens of this nation
and do our part as members of the body of Christ. We
have a promise from God that even when times are
difficult we will not leave us.
Hebrew 13.5-6 (Amplified), “For He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you
without support, I will not, I will not, I will not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let you down (relax My
hold on you)! Assuredly not! So we take comfort and are encouraged and confidently and boldly say, The Lord is my
Helper; I will not be seized with alarm I will not fear or dread or be terrified. What can man do to me?”
WOMEN OF INFLUENCE
Our anointed time of worship allows us to ask God for a seasoned
word and to offer Him our praise and prayer. It is our desire to
send everyone home with renewed hearts and hopes.
Our women breakfast is coming up...
We serve a mighty God who is full of love and mercy. He places
a high value on every single person, something we know from
the great sacrifice made at Calvary. History has shown us Satan’s
hateful attacks to degrade and devalue the children of God. But
we are more than conquerors through Jesus Christ!
When Jesus came, He showed us the most powerful and liberating
love that enables us to become everything He designed us to
be. The Bible shows us how Jesus transformed women to be an
influence and bring change to the circumstances around us, such
as in the stories of Esther, Mary Magdalene, Deborah and many
others.
At Iglesia Cornerstone, we look forward to our quarterly Women’s
Breakfast where our main goal is to bless and encourage women
to become all they that God created us to be. We enjoy a lovely
meal in a room that has been beautifully decorated, and then give
away some exciting gifts to those in attendance.
Our next breakfast will be held on
September 7, 2013 in the Cornerstone
Church Life Center. Our speaker will be
Nolita Theo from Lakewood Church in
Houston, and she will be discussing how to
fulfill the plan and design that God created
specifically for women. You don’t want to

RECAP
If you know anything about Pastor Hagee, you know that he
is indeed very patriotic. At Cornerstone Church we never
miss an opportunity to celebrate America, our freedom, or the
soldier…the very reason we are able to maintain our freedom
in an otherwise chaotic world! We are indeed blessed to live in
the land of the free and the home of the brave!

On July 4th, Cornerstone celebrated our nation’s birthday by
orchestrating a modern take on a classic favorite, the family
picnic. Good food, fun and fellowship was shared by all; at the end of the night, you could hear
the tight melodies of Canton Junction wafting through the air as fireworks of every shape, size
and color lit up the night sky. People came from near and far to celebrate not only this great
nation, but the King of kings and Lord of lords. May God bless America!

The Blessed Life
T
he quiet of the Texas Hill Country was shattered with smiles
and shouts of joy as the families of the Blessed Life Ministry
descended upon the Tarpley Retreat Center. More than 75
people arrived on Friday evening with tents, sleeping bags and
inflatable mattresses for our first annual overnight family camping
trip. Single moms, dads and grandparents came out with their
children or grandchildren to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation.
Upon arrival, everyone prayed for a blessed visit and listened to a
short safety briefing. Racing to beat the sunset, tents were erected
with the help of several handy volunteers. By twilight, we were ready
to go! The Tarpley staff prepared some delicious late-night snacks,
along with the reward for setting up camp…a bonfire complete with
s’mores! Believe it or not, there were parents and grandparents who
ate their first s’mores under the stars!
Saturday was a brand-new day, full of events: hiking, fishing and
classes on simple family camping. Families could also participate
in classes on trip planning and camp cooking (which resulted in
stew and delicious cobbler). Classes were also offered on camping
equipment and how to save money by using common items at home
to create a camp site as well as child safety and basic first aid. After
a full picnic lunch of hamburgers and hotdogs, swimming, canoeing
and paddleboats were the order of the day. In the simple beauty of
this campsite, the families found time to love on and connect with
each other.
Life was developed to assist anyone parenting single for any reason.
We look for ways to make the much-needed connection, whether in
a small-group fellowship or a camping trip. Currently, we minister
to single moms, dads, grandparents, foster-parents and spouses of
deployed soldiers.
The Blessed Life is a Pastoral Ministries program in partnership with
Special Events, Children’s Ministry and the Middle School and High
School ministries. We meet on the last Tuesday of each month in the
Life Center where a full dinner is provided for the entire family for just
$5.00. We have door prizes and activities for children of all ages, as
well as special speakers and projects for parents.
If you are a single parent, please feel free to contact us at the Pastoral
Ministries Department at 210-493-9560 and speak with Linda Lasater.
Come, join us and be a part of
The Blessed Life at Cornerstone Church!
The purpose of the Blessed Life Ministry is to better connect with our
church and its programs and people, single or not. Single parents
are not a special subcategory of the church. We are single parents
due to circumstance and decisions, often not our own. The Blessed

WEIRD:
Refusing To Blend In
God has not called us to blend into the darkness
of the world but rather be a light to it. Being like
the world is choosing to be “normal,” which is not
what we have been called to be. We are called
to be like Jesus, who was far from a typical and
normal spiritual leader of the day. He was so
different that they rejected Him, so it should not
surprise us when the world does the same to us.
Holiness is not popular and is easily misunderstood
as being WEIRD, which is why people see it weird
that sex before marriage is wrong, and how lying
and cheating a little in order to get ahead in life,
is wrong. The reason Christians have a hard time
fitting in with the world is because we been called
to be different from the world’s “normal.” For this
reason, we understand that anything that does not
look normal is viewed as WEIRD. I’m challenging you
to stand out, and stand up for God with your faith,
actions and character.
Leviticus 20:26-27
“And you shall be holy to Me, for I the Lord
am holy, and have separated you from the
peoples, that you should be Mine.”
God clearly demands that we live in holiness to
Him, which speaks directly towards our lifestyle
and character. This command is not situational
but rather a way of life. Everywhere we go and
everything we do is to be lived out for the Lord.
From the college campus, to the corporate office, to
the weekend gatherings with friends, all should be
lived with the purpose of honoring God.
by Michael Fernandez
12
CORNERSTONE MA G AZI N E | AUG UST 2 0 1 3
Consider
WEIRD
these two ways,
how we can be
and not blend in:
1.) Stand Out. Ephesians 5:7-11
“Therefore do not be partners with them. For you were once
darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children
of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness,
righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord.
Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but
rather expose them.”
First, we are instructed to not partner with those that are in
sinful activities, since that is no longer our identity. We must
watch and guard our actions so that they are not confusing
to others. We can’t stand out if we are blended into the evil
practices of the world. We are told to live as children of the
light. The old life (darkness) should look different from the new
life (light). Light consists of all goodness, righteousness and
truth, which is the kind of life we should strive to have. We are
chosen to stand out by living differently from the world.
2.) Step Out. 2 Corn. 6:17-18
“Therefore, “come out from them and be separate, says the
Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you. And, I will
be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says
the Lord Almighty.”
Paul was writing to Believers that were in danger of living for
God with their lips but not with their actions. Paul tells them to
separate themselves from the actions of the world by “coming
out,” or disassociating themselves from worldly lifestyles. We
are further called to touch nothing that is unholy. The things
we touch can get us in trouble. Touching the things of sin
and trying to become intimate with God does not work. If we
will do these things, God promises to receive us as sons and
daughters. Our actions dictate how we will be blessed by God,
therefore we must ensure our actions are held in-check. God
desires to have a close and intimate relationship with Him but
it must be under His terms and conditions. We must stand out
from the world and from sin.
So, we challenge you to be WEIRD, and not blend in with
the world. Live righteous, live with integrity and truth and
we will see God’s favor over our lives. Be the light we have
been called to be and let our convictions and standards of
living be those things we commit to for the rest of our lives.
Remember, when we determine to live for God, people will
think we are WEIRD but that’s okay, be WEIRD for Him!

Jesus’ passion, the emphasis of His ministry, His earthly
delight – was His twelve disciples. It is definitely true that He
ministered to the crowds, but Christ poured His life into those
twelve diverse men. Jesus knew that in order for His ministry to
continue after His death, He would need to effectively train the
twelve. Jesus really loved His disciples and they knew it!
Every believer is called to follow Christ. Being Jesus on earth
and being His disciple is the highest honor for a Christian. Our
belief is to partner with parents in teaching their children about
effective discipleship and how to lead people to Christ. After all,
aren’t we commanded to “Take the Gospel, To All the World and
To All Generations.”

A spectacular three days of fun filled
activities and teachings were the
highlight for the 200 plus 5 year olds
during Vacation Bible School. The
children learned about God’s Amazing
Grace, His Faithfulness and the Power
in the Blood of Christ. There were
puppets, games, wild and crazy antics,
snow cones, lunches, arts and crafts
and new friends.
This year at Praise Hymn Vacation Bible School children
discovered the heart of God through the timeless hymns
of Amazing Grace, Great is thy Faithfulness, and There
is Power in the Blood. Hilarious skits, musical guests,
interactive puppetry, amazing blacklight performances and
much more combined to present the Word of God in an
unforgettable way. Cornerstone Church is so thankful for the
opportunity to host this event and give hundreds of children
the opportunity to respond to the reality of God’s Grace,

Fusion has already kicked off the
summer with a record-breaking
attendance at the June 5th Summer
Bash. Our guest speaker was Tish
Hagee Tucker who shared her
testimony on how God completely
healed her of a rare and aggressive
cancer and encouraged our young people to come
together as one unified body, to be the healing force
to the wounds that the world inflicts upon us. Fusion
blessed the leaders with her book, Hear My Cry, and
all were blessed by the encouraging message that God
hears them when they cry out to Him for help.
On June 19th we had the lovely and talented Amanda
Crabb share the testimony of how her sweet little girl,
Eva Lynn, fell from a second-story window and was
miraculously saved by the power of God. The kids
enjoyed this powerful message on how God is always
in control, even when things look completely hopeless
in the natural.
On June 26th we enjoyed a night of fun and games
at Incredible Pizza. New friendships were created as
friends from around the city keep joining our youth
events. This is a great time to be in middle school, and
a wonderful time to dig deeper into the Word! As you
can see, we always have something exciting to do or
a powerful message from the Lord just waiting for our
middle schoolers.
If you haven’t joined us yet for some summer fun, put
us on your calendar. There are many great events
coming up such as summer camp, and other special
guest speakers such as the much-beloved Dondi
Scumaci. For more information please call our offices

SUMMER CAMP
RECAP
EVOKE: TO CALL UPON, TO STIR UP
More than 250 high school students radically evoked the presence of the
Lord at this summer’s youth camp. Students re-dedicated their hearts to
the Lord, became filled with the Spirit, and were completely set free from
addictions. On the first day, everyone had great fun at Fiesta Texas by day
and was blessed by powerful services by night. We were grateful to have
speakers Jeffrey Portmann and Mark Vega join us for some powerfullyanointed times of worship that included student-led prayer and small group
interaction. Many students encountered the Holy Spirit for the first time in a
very real way. New friendships were formed through sports tournaments,
canoeing, paintball wars and other activities.
We appreciate the investment and sacrifice made by our church, parents
and volunteers towards this life-changing event. It is our hope that these
students will never be the same and will become students of action,
integrity and faith. We invite you to join us for our Youth & Young Adult
Encounter on August 1-3, 2013. This event will motivate, encourage and
help set students free from anything that holds them back from serving
God.
We are excited to announce our new mid-week High School Youth
service beginning August 22. We will be meeting every Thursday at
7:00 p.m. for an encouraging Word and great fellowship. Join us as we
kick off this awesome event! For other exciting ways to connect with High
School Ministry, please contact our office at 210-499-1705 or find us at

The
Message
Needs Messengers
I
f you follow the news much, certainly
for those who live in Texas, you no
doubt have heard of the issues in
our state capitol regarding late-term
abortion. To date, since Roe v. Wade in
1973, America has aborted over 56,360,000
babies. Think of the enormous loss of life.
Imagine that amongst all those little lives
we have lost creativity, discoveries, new
inventions, great leaders, pastors and
teachers. No doubt each was special and
amazing in their own way. These may
have been people who could have been
capable of the unimaginable. It appears
America has lost her way.
The taking of lives, in-mass, is unfortunately not a new thing. One significant
example comes to us out of Matthew 2.
This is the chapter that tells of the Magi’s
quest to find Jesus. They came to King
Herod hoping he knew. He didn’t but encouraged them to look and let him know
too so that he also may go and worship
him. Herod, as we know, had other motives for his request. The Magi found Jesus, but did not go back to Herod. Upon
learning of this, and knowing an estimate
of how old Jesus might be, he ordered
all boys, 2 and younger in Bethlehem, be
killed. Herod was afraid that there was
one amongst the children who could be
greater than he. Perhaps there was one
among them who could even take his
power and authority.
The enemy we face today is still in the
business of silencing as many children
as possible. Some through abortion mills.
Others, however are silenced through
their education. This latter group is alive
and walking around the earth today. They
are however, essentially rendered useless
and ineffective because they were meant
to be a messenger, but have not received
the message.
What our job is as parents, and the role
Cornerstone Christian Schools play in
that process, is giving the message to
the messenger. This message begins
simply, yet profoundly by understanding
Genesis 1:28. Everything, and I mean
EVERYTHING hinges on knowing this
passage. This verse states, “God blessed
them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful
and increase in number; fill the earth
and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the
sea and the birds in the sky and over
every living creature that moves on the
ground.’” The message starts here, goes
on through wanderings in the wilderness,
the tabernacle and sacrificial system in the
Old Testament. It continues on to the birth
of Christ, His crucifixion, resurrection
and ascension. The message is ultimately
punctuated emphatically at the end by the
Rapture of the Church and Christ’s return
to conclude all things.
Do your children know this message?
What are you doing to make sure? Does
your child’s school help you reinforce this
message or does it detract from it? Do
our children see a seamless connection
between what they are taught in their
school and God’s Word? Or are they
being trained, like many of us were, that
knowledge of math, science, history and
literature are separate from scripture?
Are they taught these things are separate
subjects and, in fact, theology itself is
simply an academic subject one could
pick up to study if one wishes. My friend,
this ought not be the case. What happens
to a messenger who has no message? It is
the same thing that happens to a soul who
has not accepted Christ nor integrated
His Word seamlessly in every field of
study. T.S. Eliot, a famous American
writer and poet of many Christian themes
described the life of an individual in their
natural, pre-Christ state. Here is just
a small portion taken from his 98-line
poem written around 1924 entitled, “The
Hollow Men.”
We are the hollow men.
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass
Or rats’ feet over broken glass
In our dry cellar
Shape without form, shade without color,
Paralyzed force, gesture without motion;
The message of Christ must never be
silenced. However, the message needs
messengers. Will you and your family
volunteer? Will you lead your family
to both hear and integrate the message
into their daily thinking? If you have
not chosen a Christian school, how will
you compensate the gaps in the message
your child receives for 40+ hours every
week for 9 months each year multiplied
over about 12-14 years? The message of
Christ and His love for all has not gone
away. This message, in which He longs,
for fellowship with His created, will
never die. Sadly though, this message can
be forgotten. At Cornerstone Christian
Schools, we stand ready to help you
inform your messengers. Let’s get to
work.
