Both beginners and advanced students to Binche are welcome in this course. The lacemaker who also wants to try to make their own patterns and study drafting is also welcome. Each student is requested to contact the teacher prior to the course to choose a pattern at the appropriate level. PREREQUISITES: All levels of bobbin lace student are accepted but need to have solid bobbin lace fundamentals. Kumiko has studied bobbin lace in Brugge, Belgium. She specializes in Binche and Flanders. She has been designing and teaching lace since 2000. Aemilia Ars Needlelace, Carolyn Wetzel The Aemilia Ars Society formed in Bologna in 1898 during the “Liberty” movement in Italy, which was Italy’s version of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Aemilia Ars lace is a bold needle lace, styled on 16th and 17th century Punto in Aria patterns as interpreted by modern eyes. The lace can be floral or geometric and is sturdy enough for household linens. There are few stitches to learn because the beauty of the lace is in its elegant designs, not intricate needlework. In this class students will make a small floral motif with a border in order to complete all the steps of the process during the weekend. Suitable for beginners as well as more experienced needle lace makers. PREREQUISITES: None Carolyn’s first needle lace teacher was the late Irma Osterman and she has continued exploring the technique for over 20 years. She has written lace-related articles for Piecework Magazine and frequents the online discussion forum NeedleLaceTalk.ning.com. Carolyn is a member of FLLG, the New England Lace Group, and IOLI (former Eastern Director). Explorations in Bobbin Lace, Designing and Interpreting Your Own Lace, Laura Friesel Leave your pillow at home and travel light! In a combination of group discussion and individual work, students will begin to learn where to look for inspiration for lace designs, and how to transfer that inspiration to paper. They will also learn how to choose colors, thread, and stitches to interpret patterns. All levels are welcome. Come with an open mind and ready to play with possibilities. PREREQUISITES: None Laura Friesel was born into a lace making family. She is a self-taught artist who was encouraged by Holly Van Sciver to pursue her interest in lace as art. Laura has exhibited her work in fine art venues in NJ, PA, and NY for ten years. Adventures in 's Gravenmoerse Lace, Susan Wenzel ’s Gravenmoerse Lace is a Dutch lace that historically adorned specialty bonnets. It has been revived and modernized. Use of color is typical of ’s Gravenmoerse Lace today. Beginners will work a bookmark/ornament that incorporates many ’s Gravenmoerse techniques. Intermediate/Advanced students can either work a bookmark/ decoration or scarf. It is required to take all 3 days of classes to be able to work the scarf with a matching tassel on both ends. I have devised a special technique to be able to start both ornaments and the scarf with a tassel so that both ends match. PREREQUISITES: Beginners need to have a good knowledge of Torchon Lace. Intermediate/Advanced students need to be able to work a diagonal half stitch comfortably. Susan originally learned to make lace while living in England and continued her studies in Bruges and Holland. She studied 's Gravenmoerse Lace under the guidance of a well known expert, who wrote the most comprehensive book of techniques on 's Gravenmoerse Lace. She has been teaching for 26 years. “Color Up” Your Idrija Lace, Allie Marguccio Students in this course will use colored thread and inspiration from pictures taken of nature to work an Idrija lace pattern. Class will begin with students using colored pencils and tracing paper to “color” the tapes or trails of their pattern to create a working plan. Then, using at least three different colors of thread, they will experiment with shading using the passive threads or a different color weaver. They will learn how to switch colors in a tape to create a variegated or ombre look. PREREQUISITES: Strong Torchon skills The great-granddaughter of a Slovene bobbin lacemaker, Allie’s passion is evidenced by her continued study and research of the lace of her heritage. She has studied under the tutelage of Metka Fortuna, director of the Idrija School of Lace and Stana Frelih, Master Teacher. Allie teaches lace workshops throughout the USA and at the past five IOLI conferences as well as private lessons at her home. Her lace work was showcased this summer at an exhibit titled, “Threads: From Traditional to Today” at the Pennsylvania State Governor’s Mansion in Harrisburg, PA Discovering Honiton Lace, All Levels, Holly Van Sciver Honiton lace is a beautiful English free lace depicting images from nature. It is the gateway to interpreandtive lacemaking of pictorial images. The focus will be on teaching the fundamentals with the goal to open the floodgates of imagination; to see the world in lace. Students will learn the foundation skills of free lace including dressing the pillow, starting at a point, adding and deleting pairs in whole stitch and half stitch, back stitching, crossing the coarse thread, ordinary and raised sewings, ribs and rolled work, bowing off, decorative gimps and much more. Students wishing to work on continuing patterns in, Lester, Bucks, Beds, and Contemporary lace are also welcome. PREREQUISITES: Beginners to Bucks must have good bobbin lace fundamentals. Intermediate and advanced students should have a good working knowledge of Bucks Point fundamentals. Holly has been a student and teacher of lacemaking for 41 years. Originally trained in England, she specializes in teaching the 19th century English laces. She has taught and lectured in the United States, Canada and Europe for the International Organization of Lace, regional lace guilds, national lace conferences, museums, historical societies, universities, and professional organizations. Using an interdisciplinary approach, Holly is a leader in teaching the fundamentals underlying lacemaking theory and design. She is the founder of the Finger Lakes Lace Guild and owner of Van Sciver Bobbin Lace, which has served to promote lacemaking worldwide since 1981. The Art and Tradition of Bucks Point, Susie Johnson Bucks Point is a beautiful, fine, elegant English bobbin lace with net ground and an emphasis on gimp outlining the designs. Beginning students will learn the foundations of Bucks including footside, point ground, catch-pin, picots, and honeycomb. Continuing students will work on more difficult patterns to learn the curved Bucks head-side and more complex gimp movement and typical pattern elements. The flow and rhythm of Bucks patterns make it a pleasant lace to work! Anyone who wishes to either begin or continue Withof is welcome to join this class. In addition, upon request and with approval, students are welcome to pursue other laces which includes help with UFOs and longawaited projects requiring help to start. PREREQUISITES: Good Torchon Skills A lacemaker since 1981, Susie has pursued the serious study of many different types of lace with teachers from various countries. Almost as soon as she learned to make lace, Bucks Point became her favorite. Although best known for her work in Withof, she also teaches many other laces at events such as IOLI convention, the Finger Lakes Lace Days, the Winter Lace Conference, and Lace at Sweet Briar as well as twice-weekly classes at home. Her work has been exhibited internationally and she has been the co-coordinator of the International Poppy Project. She is also on the IOLI Proficiency Journal Committee. Introduction To Bobbin Lacemaking, Jean Jagendorf Beginning students will learn the language of lace and practice several stitches in a traditional sample tape. These stitches will then be used to complete a simple motif ~ a "lace bobbin" ~ an original design for this course. All students will receive a complimentary booklet to keep as a background reference for further study in traditional lace classes or for creative exploration with contemporary fiber art designs. Materials to be used for this workshop will be loaned by the FLLG and turned in at the end of class. Students may purchase supplies at the event to continue their lacemaking. This course is being subsidized by the Finger Lakes Lace Guild, allowing for a reduced rate of $68.00 for a two-day workshop including the Friday reception, all Saturday activities, and Sunday brunch. An optional Monday extension of this class, for an additional $58.00, will use a half-stitch circle motif to provide practice with backstitches, the footside stitch, lace sewings, and inserting a gimp thread and beads. Saturday/Sunday registration is required to take this extension class. PREREQUISITES: None Jean has studied the traditional bobbin laces since 1983 with Holly Van Sciver and numerous Lace Day and IOLI workshop teachers. Designing and exhibiting her 3 dimensional lace sculptures, Jean has lectured on the creative process used in applying bobbin lace techniques with various fibers, other materials, and Plexiglass and acrylic forms.
