Lace-In Challenge
Hedgehog Lacers
14th Annual Lace-In
September 10-11, 2011
The members of the Hedgehog Lace Guild invite you to attend
our annual lace workshop.
We have a wonderful group of teachers offering a variety of
classes.
Classes
100 Beginning and Continuing Bobbin Lace ~ JoDee Kane
This flower is a great project for beginning and intermediate lacemakers. It is
worked in two colors of tone-on-tone or contrast. It uses 7 to 8 pair depending on
the pattern of choice and a cookie pillow. It can be worked in layers of different sizes
and patterns or as a continuous piece of lace removing pins as you go as if you were
using a roller pillow. It’s fun and can be used in many different ways when complete.
Complete beginners are welcome.
101 Milanese Lace — All levels ~ Louise Colgan
Milanese Lace is characterized by special decorative stitches that
become integral features of each design. The creative nature of this
type of lace makes it suitable for both traditional and contemporary
interpretation.
Instruction will cover all levels of Milanese techniques. Students are
given the option of using colored threads to make their own unique
pieces from the selected patterns. Anyone new to Milanese as well
as those continuing with an existing project are welcome.
103 Bedfordshire Lace — Beginning/
Continuing ~ Elizabeth Peterson
Bedfordshire Lace is characterized by trails with plaits/
leaves bouncing and going thru the trails. It also has the "9pin" edge. This course is an introduction to the basic techniques used in this traditional English lace. Students will
learn plaits, picots, 9-pin edge, trails, bouncing plaits/leaves
off the trail, crossings, beginnings, endings and the basic
Beds leaf. Continuing students will learn more Beds techniques; adding and discarding pairs invisibly, the Beds
"kiss," raised and rolled tallies, and magic threads hints and
tips. Students will be able to work at their own pace with
patterns provided; they may also bring patterns to discuss
possible working solutions. Come learn this exciting lace
and its many techniques and you’ll love leaves when you
leave.
104
Tonder Lace - Roberta Donnelly
Tonder is a fine point ground lace from Denmark. Beginners to Tonder lace should come to class with a good
understanding of general lace stitches and the use of a gimp. Familiarity with the European system of colored
diagrams will be helpful. Patterns for this class call for Egyptian cotton 140/2,
and students will choose their patterns ahead of time. Available patterns range
from edgings, many with corners, to medallions so there is something for
everyone. Students will progress at their own pace so relax and enjoy the
intricacies of this beautiful lace.
Bobbi Donnelly has been making lace since 1991 and has studied with many
teachers both here and abroad. She has been teaching Tonder lace for four
years. Currently she is working on reconstructions of old Danish laces from
Tonderkniplinger og deres navne from the Tonder Museum in Denmark and
personal photos of the museum’s lace collection. She is also designing some
additional patterns based on those reconstructions for use in class. In her free
time, she is designing a fan pattern in Tonder lace inspired by an antique piece
from the Tonder Museum in Denmark.
105 Wire Lace Flower Pin—Sylvia Fellows
Make a lovely 3-D flower pin, approximately 3 inches
across, in two colors of wire.
If you can do a double stitch (a.k.a. whole stitch or a cloth
stitch and twist) you can do this flower!
Working with wire is a little different than working with
thread, but IT'S NOT HARD!
Come and try it; you might like it!
106 Bobbin Lace Pendants or Earrings—Radmila Zuman
Students will select a silver wire frame for a pendant, or silver wire earrings and
then design their own patterns to work into the frame. They will choose from
various shapes of frames from a kit ($10.00). Various filling designs will be discussed, and creativity encouraged. If desired, pattern or suggestions will be discussed to use in creating the project.
Material: Students should bring their selection of threads in white or color
(thickness about button hole sewing thread is adequate), if desired some beads to
incorporate in their design. For earrings, sewing thread is appropriate, may use
small beads.
Technique: Basic cloth/half stitch, leaves/tallies skills necessary. Ten to twelve
pairs of bobbins (not all might be used). The projects could be finished at the
end of class.
Lace-In Challenge
The challenge is to take one, two, or all three prickings, create your own pattern to go
with them, and make some lace using that pattern. Go to hedgehoglacers.org and you
will be able to get an adobe reader file that should print a full size pricking on an 8-1/2
x 11 sheet of paper.
There is no required length of lace you need to make for this challenge. It is suggested
that you make a minimum of 4 repeats. The deadline for this challenge will be the next
Lace-In. Winners will be chosen by popular vote.
