• NUMBER 9 • OCTOBER 2013 VOLUME LXXXVII • VOLUME NUMBERLXXXX 1 • JANUARY 2011 to see it in person. On the cruise, the weather was beautiful, and the scenery was spectacular. We saw whales, dolphins or porpoises, seals, goats on the mountain sides, snow and yes, some even saw a bear in the wild, but the fellowship enjoyed by all was the biggest highlight of the trip. Just ask to see the pictures, because believe me, the cameras were kept very busy. My Lady and I wish to say a very big “thank you” to our fellow cruisers for making a dream come true in great style! Illustrious Sir Bob Maxwell WOW! What a fantastic time we had on the Alaska Cruise. Before we boarded the ship, many of us visited Pike’s Fish Market on the Seattle Pier. It is a world famous landmark in Seattle, where they put on a great show. When a fish is purchased, they yell, and then throw the fish, where it is caught and wrapped in one motion. You may have seen this on the Travel Channel, but to truly experience it, you really need Kosair Charities held their “Grants Night” in August with over $18,000,000.00 being given to various groups who work with and care for the children in need in the Kentuckiana area. Just makes your fez sit a little straighter on your head when you realize the help we provide to children in our area, doesn’t it? Most cities have one “Silent Messenger” standing proudly in front of their Shrine Center. Our area finds what has to be the largest concentration of “Silent Messengers” showing our love and dedication to providing services for children in need. Your heart should swell with the pride of being a big part of this endeavor. 90th Anniversary of Kosair Charities I trust that all enjoyed the Kosair Family Picnic held at the Tri-County Shrine Club. I know I did. Thank you to my Hospitality Chairman Noble Perry Adams and especially to our The statues you see going up all over Louisville and the surrounding region of a Shriner carrying a child is known as the Silent Messenger. It is symbolic of the statement, “No man stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child.” Kosair Shriners are members of a fraternity which believes in God and respects all faiths. At the end of September, I was honored to represent Kosair at the Great Lakes Unit Meet held by the Ladies’ Oriental Shrine in Cincinnati, OH. I enjoyed visiting with old friends and meeting new Nobles from the Great Lakes area. Don’t forget Norton’s Night on October 4th. You must make a reservation for dinner in order to receive your flu shot. Norton’s always provides our members with It is never too early or late to talk about membership. We will have a Ceremonial on November 9th so go out and bring those petitions in. I look forward to welcoming a group of new Nobles to the greatest fraternity on earth, and of course, the greatest Shrine Temple. Just like every Shrine Temple, Kosair needs a few good men and their Ladies to carry on the work of the Shrine and our commitment to the special children in our care. As of this writing, I really have nothing to report on the new building other than the work is progressing. I know we will have a new Shrine Center to be proud of when it is finished, but as with all things great, it just takes time. Until next time, stay healthy and happy and visit your Shrine Center often to renew old friendships and to make new friends. There is something for everyone at KOSAIR! Yours in the Faith of the Shrine, Bob Maxwell Potentate Kosair Kolums Courier Journal cont. from pg.1 Kosair Charities, and the assistance of our many donors and community partners. This year as Kosair Charities celebrates our 90th anniversary, we are reminded that 90 years ago a group of concerned Louisville citizens recognized the need for quality healthcare for the region’s children, whether their families had the ability to pay or not. These citizens reached out to Kosair Shriners who answered their call for help, and today Kosair Charities continues to answer that call. Over the years, the ways we serve children have changed but our focus remains the same, helping Kosair Kids®. Most recently Kosair Charities stepped up when startling statistics revealed Kentucky had the highest rate of child mortality due to abuse and neglect in the country. Again, concerned citizens and professionals called on Kosair Charities to help and the Face It movement was launched under Kosair Charities’ leadership. Kosair Charities continually strives to serve more diverse populations and meet their unique and most pressing needs. To do this, we partner with a vast array of non-profit agencies who dedicate themselves to ensuring the health and wellness needs of all of our region’s children are met. We are humbled by the efforts of the clinicians, researchers, and staff of our Kosair Charities supported agencies and appreciate the thoughtful stewardship they provide for every dollar of funding they receive from Kosair Charities. Thanks to the strategic partnerships we have forged, Kosair Charities is able to reach every neighborhood and business district in the community and serve children throughout Kentucky and Southern Indiana. While the opening of the Kosair Charities East Campus will deliver pediatric therapy, audiology, and educational services to special needs kids outside the Watterson Expressway, our new University of Louisville Pediatric and Dental Clinics at Kosair Charities Center will offer a comprehensive medical home for children in the city’s center, including those who depend on KCHIP for health insurance. Likewise Kosair Charities is able to reach children in southern Indiana through our support of Hope Southern Indiana, children in west Louisville thanks to Neighborhood House, Louisville Central Community Centers, and the Dream Foundation, and Bullitt County through our support of CASA Bullitt County. Our support of the Kosair Shriner’s Transportation Unit ensures that children throughout the region find their way to needed services even when they are located many miles away from their homes. Our partner agencies are not only diverse geographically—they are also diverse in terms of mission and the children they serve. Kosair Charities is particularly grateful to our faith-based partners, who like Kosair Shriners, view service to children as being at the core of their ministry. Kosair Charities has answered the call of our faithbased partners whether it comes from Sister Jean Anne Zappa of Shively Area Ministries, community ministry groups throughout Jefferson County, the Jewish Family and Career Services of Louisville, First Gethsemane Baptist Church, Emmanuel Baptist Church, Living Faith Christian Ministries, or St. Stephen Church. Kosair Charities believes that all children are a gift from God and should be served regardless of their faith tradition. This year Kosair Charities will make grants totaling nearly $19 million to 95 non-profits serving children including Kosair Charities Children’s Peace Center, Down Syndrome of Louisville, Home of the Innocents, Visually Impaired Preschool, Gilda’s Club, University of Louisville, Shriners Hospitals for Children and many, many more. These grants will support small community based groups to large multi-million dollar, multi-campus institutions. All will help Kosair Charities help Kosair Kids® in distinctive and irreplaceable ways. Additionally, Kosair Charities will stand ready to step in when an unexpected disaster or crisis occurs and impacts children’s quality of life, as we did this year in rebuilding a playground in Henryville, Ind. The next time you pass a Silent Messenger know that it stands not only in recognition of financial support received from Kosair Charities, but also in recognition of the important work being carried out by an agency dedicated to protecting our most precious gift of all, our children. Kosair Charities is proud to partner with these organizations in changing the landscape of pediatric healthcare in Kentucky and southern Indiana. We are grateful for their hard work and dedication and for the donors who support us, so that we can make their dreams for Kosair Kids® a reality. When you think Kosair, think Kosair Charities. Competition is the force that Like so much early Masonic drives the world’s economies, history, the origins of the Scottish and it also seems to have driven Rite are hidden in mist. There’s Scottish Masonry in France, evidence that by the early 1730s which became part of jockeying in England there were “Scotch for power within the Grand M a s o n s ” o r “ S c o t s M a s t e r Lodge of France. The Council Masons,” a step after the Master of the Knights of the East, Mason Degree (and apparently Sovereign Prince Masons, was unrelated to Scotland). By 1742 organized in 1756, and included in Berlin there was talk of “higher in its government middle-class or so-called Scottish Masonry.” In Masons who had been excluded in 1743 the Grand Lodge of France previous High Degree ventures. It adopted a regulation limiting is not known how many degrees the privileges of “Scots Masters” the Knights worked, but they in lodges. It’s clear from these seem to have faded out around few mentions that something 1768–1779. was going on behind the scenes with “Scottish Masonry,” but Coming on the heels of the we’re not quite sure what. These Knights of the East in 1758 developments were happening was the Sovereign Council of at the same time the Royal Arch Emperors of the East and of the was gestating before its birth in West, Sublime Scottish Mother 1754. It’s even possible that the Lodge. The Emperors attracted Royal Arch and Scottish Masonry the upper class and nobility came from the same sources. We and competed with the knights just don’t know. in the number of degrees they offered. (Just from a marketing What we do know is that the high point of view the newer group degrees found fertile ground when bested the older: “Emperors” are they were introduced to French more powerful than “Knights,” Masonry. In 1745, two years and “East and West” is twice an after restricting Scotch Masons, extensive as only “East.”) the Grand Lodge of France gave them special privileges, and more The Invention of Stephen Morin privileges and authority followed In August 1761 Stephen Morin in 1747 and 1755. In contrast, received a patent from the Grand the Royal Arch appears in lodge Lodge of France “authorizing and minutes in America in 1753 and empowering him to establish England in 1758 with little official perfect and sublime Masonry in notice. Morin is little remembered for his wine business, but his Masonic activities have gained him lasting fame. Kosair contributes over $10 million annually to health care for children It took Morin about 15 months to make it from France to Santo Domingo, arriving in January 1763, because his ship was captured by the English and he was taken to England. While we know that he arrived with a patent of authority over the High Degrees, we don’t know how many or which High Degrees he controlled! What we do know is that he met a Dutch merchant, Henry Andrew Francken, and made him a Deputy Inspector General sometime between 1763 and 1767. Francken in turn traveled to Albany, New York, and created there a Lodge of Perfection (4°–14°) in 1767. In addition to creating the Albany Lodge of Perfection, Francken at least four times copied all of his degrees into books: 1771, 1783, and two undated versions. The “Francken Manuscripts” contain the earliest English versions of 21 degrees from 4°, “Secret Master,” to 25°, “The Royal Secret or Knights of St. Andrews—the faithful guardians of the Sacred Treasure,” a 25-degree system with the first three degrees conferred in Blue Lodges. This should establish conclusively that Morin worked a system of 25 degrees, right? Well, only if the degrees that Morin gave to Francken are the same ones that he received in France! There is growing evidence that Morin took whatever high degrees he had received in France and refashioned them into the Order of the Royal Secret, creating additional degrees as needed. Continued on pg.9 KOSAIR BOAT CLUB Mike Grant, Commodore Jim Szofer, Vice Commodore Guy Gray, Rear Commodore Henry Watson, Sr. Purser 8 Kosair Kolums The governing document, the “Constitutions of 1762,” has been discovered by Masonic scholar Alain Bernheim to be a slightly modified version of the constitution of the Grand Lodge of France. Morin apparently acted to create a new Masonic body with himself as the only “Grand Inspector.” The First Supreme Council: Charleston, 1801 a new 33-degree system of high degrees that incorporated all 25 of the Order of the Royal Secret, and added eight more, including that of 33°, Sovereign Grand Inspector General. This new organization declared control of high-degree Masonry in America. in the world was established in Santo Domingo in 1802, a fitting return to Stephen Morin’s home. This Supreme Council died with the slave revolt on the island, but one of its members, Antoine Bideaud, fled to New York. While there he came across five Frenchmen who were interested The new Supreme Council had a in the high degrees. However the 25-degree Order of the Royal Secret came into being, it proved popular. These French high degrees, unlike the English York Rite, were spread by traveling Inspectors who conferred them for a fee. It wasn’t necessary to wait for enough Masons in a town to receive the high degrees somewhere else and for them to apply for a charter; the itinerant Inspector could take care of everything as soon as he arrived. Eight bodies of the Royal Secret were formed in America before 1800, from New Orleans to Albany. The weakness of the Order proved to be the unchecked The Second American Supreme system of Inspectors General. Council: New York, 1806 Each Inspector General could confer the degrees on Master Masons, establish local bodies, and create new Inspectors—all for an appropriate fee. There were no guidelines on cost, no limitation on numbers, and no restriction on how many more Inspectors an Inspector could create. By 1800 there were over 80 Inspectors General, and the system was moving toward chaos. The Charleston Supreme Council had organized itself according to the “Grand Constitution of the Thirty-third Degree,” purportedly written by Frederick the Great of Prussia in 1786. The Constitution provided for one Supreme Council in each country, except that the United States of America could have up to two. De la Motta regularized Bideaud’s group and transformed them into the second Supreme Council for America, now known as the “Northern Masonic Jurisdiction” and consisting of 15 mid-western and northeastern states from Wisconsin and Illinois northeast to Maine. The original Supreme Council or “Southern Jurisdiction” is composed of the other 35 states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. All regular Supreme Councils of the world today descend from the Mother Supreme Council of Charleston. 9 10 Kosair Kolums Kosair Funsters Hello, out there in the Shriner Well! Congratulations and a hearty handshake to each. I am proud to know and be associated with each of these Gentlemen. This is quite an honor and reflects a lot of hard work and dedication. Several of our members recently underwent serious surgery. Art Davis had his left hip replaced on July 30th and Brad Clark had heart by-pass surgery the latter part of July but both these guys attended our August monthly meeting. And the writer has an ongoing motion/balance problem that remains undiagnosed even though he has recently been examined by three neurologists, two in Louisville and one in McDonald House and the response was tremendous. We had 30 people to score. What was even greater, everyone showed up at the proper time, didn’t forget and wore their white shirts. Thanks to those of you who helped get the scorers. We hope everyone enjoyed the brunch and had fun scoring. You all looked so nice in your white shirts. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Mike Grant, President Lexington. As the old saying goes, old age ain’t for sissies. The Unit had a very busy summer. In the May 15th through June 18th time slot we had an all time record amount of trips and miles driven. Below is a summary. April 17th thru May 14th --Trips = 13 --- Miles driven = 4426 --- Average per trip = 341 May 15th thru June 18th --Trips = 28 --- Miles driven = 8237 --- Average per trip = 294 June 19th thru July 16th --Trips = 20 --- Miles driven = 4152 --- Average per trip = 208 July 17th thru Aug. 20th --Trips = 27 --- Miles driven = 7955 --- Average per trip = 295 All this driving is making me tired so I’m going to pull a Carroll Laird and take a nap. See you next month. Roger Hines, Unit Secretary Kosair Kolums Have You Moved? Your Temple does not care if you move, when you move, or how you move but it certainly does care WHERE you move. Hmm…………….just can’t wait. Hope to see you there – October 27th. - By Mike Grant I need to regress just a little and go back to Saturday, July 20th, when we met with Santa and took the toys, to the kids at Kosair Children’s Hospital, for “Christmas in July”. A big thank you goes to Brenda O’Bryan, Kosair Children’s Hospital Volunteer Coordinator and her group of Volunteers, who helped us make the wonderful tradition of “Christmas in July” a reality for both the Boat Club and the Kids. Look at the happy smiles of everyone on that day! On August 17th, we spent the afternoon at Loren and Lou Johnson’s home, in celebration of the First Mates Cookout. We had 24 people at this event, the weather was perfect, the food was delicious and everyone enjoyed Loren and Lou’s great hospitality. Thanks again Loren & Lou. and Hotdog Cookout!! This event was held “Down by the River”, at the Etheridge Camp. We had boat races, card games, 50/50, cake walks and lots and lots of food and fun! The Boat Club hopes to make this an annual event. September 28th marked the Boat Club’s new event, the Bean Soup The next event will be an outing to Huber’s in Starlight, Indiana, The Boat Club will have a Commodore’s Ball this year. It will be held on November 23rd. We will have basket give-away, tickets are being sold now – see a boat club member to get yours. We will have a great dance with Joey Etheridge’s band “Mid Life Crisis”. Come and join the Boat Club, No Boat needed -- just come to the meeting and events, for fun and fellowship. “See ya” next month on the pages of the Kosair Kolums! Legion of Honor After the Hot Summer, it is nice to enjoy the Colors of Fall and some cooler weather. The Kosair Legion of Honor prepares for the Potentate’s Ball on October 12, 2013, as we will participate in the Presentation of Colors and Arch of Steel. We hope to recruit new members to the Kosair Legion of Honor during the Kosair Shrine Ceremonial in November. On December 7th, 2013, the Kosair Legion of Honor and Legionettes 18 will have their Christmas Dinner from 5-7pm in the Scimitar Room.
