Mills, MD Joanne Ollivier Byrne Stapleton Lauren Stapleton Honorary Chairs James Whiteman Lois Whiteman Sponsored by T he remembrance of former restaurateur George Mancy was celebrated at the 18th annual golf outing held at Highland Meadows Golf Course. The weather certainly cooperated for what turned out to be a blistering hot day for 100 golfers. Once again the hole-in-one competition to win a 2015 Jeep Renegade donated by the Yark Automotive Group went unclaimed. However the game remained strong for the guys and gals with 1st place going to Marc Hall from Subway and his team; 2nd place to Jeff Manore and his team members; 3rd place to Todd Esser’s team from Treu House of Munch; 4th place to John McHugh from Heidelberg and his team; while last but not least was the 5th place team with Aaron Bieszczad from Waterford Bank at the helm. There were lots of door prizes and a 50/50 raffle, with Mike Mancy winning the 50/50 and donating his winnings back. At the end, Jeff Manore donated back a prize as well as John McHugh, which Jeff auctioned off. Marc Hall was the winning bidder of the Monroe Golf Country Club gift certificate for four and Frank Pertz was the winning bidder of the UT tickets donated by John McHugh. An added event this year was the putting hole sponsored by Jeff Manore, with the proceeds given to Anne Grady. One of the best parts of this event was that Suzy Kessinger, who won the $300 Cure putter donated by Jeff, works at Mancy’s Italian and has an uncle who lives at Anne Grady; so, I guess she was well connected to this tournament. The generosity of the 75 hole sponsors and so many wonderful prizes donated for the tournament made it another smashing success. The evening ended up with a prime-rib dinner at Mancy’s Italian where John Mancy, Sr., George’s twin brother, thanked both Sharon Unkle and Lee English for all their hard work and thanked the players for attending. John stated he feels that this is still one of the best tournaments around and that more and more golfers want to play in it. After 18 years, he feels that George is still looking out for us, making this one of the best tournaments, bar none! He said, “I’m sure George is looking down and knowing it’s for such a good cause … the Anne Grady Center … and that he’s keeping it going.” 2 Anne Grady Reflections/Fall 2015 Anne Grady Services…Thankful for Grants • Anne Grady Services was gifted $16,500 from the Andersons Fund, with a grant made available through The Toledo Community Foundation. These funds will be utilized to purchase home necessities for the new group homes. • Anne Grady Services was awarded two $10,000 grants for a total of $20,000 through the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities to operate the Summer Day Camp Program and help keep costs low for families. These funds made it possible for the Summer Camp to increase the amount of children they were able to serve. This was also the pilot for the inclusion of campers with developmental disabilities to interact with non-disabled children. The camp was a huge success. Anne Grady Services thanks the Wild Cats Youth Basketball Team and Coach Stephen Coleman for their participation. They would also like to thank the Toledo Zoo Education Department for their participation. • Anne Grady Services is also thankful for the grant received from the Knights of Columbus, Council 3122, in the amount of $855. • Anne Grady Services is happy to announce that the playground revitalization project has been completed to the Noah’s House outdoor play area. The project was made possible by a grant that was received from the Marathon Golf Classic Funds, made available through The Toledo Community Foundation. The revised area meets all of the current ADA requirements for a commercial playground. The children from Noah’s House and the Anne Grady Center are really enjoying the play area. • Prescribed Pediatrics Center was fortunate enough to receive a grant award from the Toledo Rotary to purchase a Broda positioning chair for the children. This chair is in addition to one PPC already has, stating that they are such wonderful chairs! The chairs help to minimize skin breakdown and provide more comfort to the individuals than other positioning chairs. Each child who has been using them have had no issues with skin breakdown and they are all very comfortable in them. They even had one child who was grimacing and grunting in a few other positions until they put him in the Broda chair. After he was positioned in the chair, he was as content as could be! PPC is very appreciative to the Toledo Rotary for the ability to purchase this chair! Anne Grady says a sad farewell to Dean O., who will truly be missed by all those who knew and loved him. Anne Grady Reflections/Fall 2015 3 A Anne Grady Mourns Therapy Dog Caleb nne Grady Services lost a long-time, beloved member of its team. Caleb, a Golden Retriever certified by the Assistance Dogs of America, passed away suddenly on July 15, 2015. Caleb worked with Dr. Jill Fox, a prominent local psychiatrist. Caleb was a constant partner in Dr. Fox’s work not only with the individuals served at Anne Grady, but also at the Family Service of Northwest Ohio and within Dr. Fox’s private practice. Caleb was 9 ½ years old and received his certificate of graduation from Assistance Dogs of America, Inc., in May of 2006; and he has been providing animal-assisted therapy in the Toledo area ever since. “I have been blessed with many, many texts and emails from associates that knew Caleb. The stories I am hearing about the ways in which he affected them are so amazing,” stated Dr. Jill Fox, Psychiatrist, who’s 15 year affiliation with Anne Grady has always included Caleb since she got him. Dr. Fox recalls one individual in particular who sat silently, defiant of the situation with her arms folded – until Caleb came in. “We just talked about Caleb while we brushed him. Pretty soon, after talking about dogs in general, I slipped in some specific questions. Within a few minutes the individual became engaged into the conversation – that’s the magic of therapy animals,” declared Dr. Fox. Caleb and Dr. Jill Fox As a tribute and in memory of Caleb, Dr. Fox thought it would be awesome if donations were made to Anne Grady, supporting the individuals that Caleb so much enjoyed every time he visited. Donations can be sent to Anne Grady Services, PO Box 1297, Toledo, Ohio 43528-1297, specifying that they are in Caleb’s memory. ANNE GRADY NON-PROFIT ORG.
