What began at the Chip as a simple, dignified moment of appreciation has expanded to include the combined forces of various military organizations, distinguished service awards, a field of 1000 flags backed by a memorial wall, and – as of last year – a Freedom Celebration Ride. From morning till midnight, Thursday, August 6, is packed full. Page 4 Sturgis Buffalo Chip’s Wolfman Jack Stage Tonight 7 pm..................... Brent James 8:30 PM ......... Sturgis Rider Freedom ride Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2015 Helping Heroes Continued from Page 1 liam “Spanky” Gibson. Arriving at the Chip CrossRoads, there’s history to be made as performance artist John Quigley creates a living montage composed entirely of bikes and riders. Everyone can join the Freedom Riders at the Field of Flags in forming a massive eagle in flight, dubbed the Eagle 75. It will be photographed for posterity from a helicopter flying overhead. A catered reception, live music and brief program complete the Freedom Ride but the Celebration continues in the Buffalo Chip amphitheater (separately ticketed) when the 2015 Bob Hansen Distinguished Service Awardees are recognized on the Wolfman Jack Stage at a break in the headliner concert. There’s still time to sign up for the Freedom Celebration Ride at www.buffalochip.com/EVENTS. The $75 ride fee benefits the Warrior Dog Foundation, Wounded Wear/Combat Wounded Coalition, America’s Mighty Warriors and the Community Living Center at Fort Meade VA. Join up and let your freedom flag fly! Daily The Buffalo Chip is home to many military groups during the Rally, some only on Freedom Celebration Day and others all week. For impromptu gatherings all rally long, start at the Patriots Pavilion in the Hoyt Axton area, sponsored by Twisted Tea. It’s the 4th of July here everyday as heroes are recognized and the spirit of America thrives. You can’t miss the Field of Flags, a striking spectacle that begs for picture taking. Walk through the field to see the Battlefield Cross Memorial and AVTT Veterans Memorial Wall. You’ll leave with a lump in your throat, guaranteed. Credit is due the Patriot Guard Riders for assisting in the placement and maintenance of these displays, but this is the last group of people who would ever seek recognition. The Patriot Guard work across American to protect families and honor heroes in many ways, keeping silent vigil then disappearing in a V-Twin rumble. VFW Post 3312 of Belle Fourche, SD, will be on hand Thursday with their recognizable poppies. Toss in a dollar or two to help them maintain national and state veterans’ rehabilitation and ser- vice programs. Organizations on hand all week: • Wounded Wear provides free clothing and modifications to wounded warriors and works to raise national awareness of their sacrifice. The organization’s vision is to guide combat-wounded warriors to find a purpose-driven life and peace of mind after the impact of war. • America’s Mighty Warriors was founded by Debbie Lee after her son Marc was the first Navy SEAL to be killed in Iraq on August 2, 2006. In Marc’s last letter home, he asked friends and family to “pass on the love and kindness and precious gift of human life.” Since then, America’s Mighty Warriors has been working to support our troops, the fallen and their families. • Warrior Dog Foundation is dedicated to serving the special operations community, families and Special Operation Forces working with K-9 military dogs. They educate the public on the importance of K-9s in combat and showcase the level of sacrifice these dogs give in support of our troops. Returning to the Chip Crossroads Cycle Source Magazine’s Annual Chopper Show It used to be acceptable to ride the bike you could afford, no matter its country of origin, and cobble it up yourself into your personal concept of the singular dream machine. Chopper, digger, bobber or weekend racer, maybe it wasn’t a cover bike but it showed ingenuity and forced its owner to develop some wrenching skills. It’s bikes like this you’re likely to find at the Cycle Source Chopper Show, today at the Buffalo Chip CrossRoads. And for the 8th straight year, the entry fee is the same: registration is free. That’s cool because it won’t cost you a dime to enter your bike yet you stand to win prizes from high-profile aftermarket companies like S&S, JIMS USA, Biker’s Choice, Bikernet, TC Bros and many others. Winners also receive handmade trophies fabricated by Kevin “Teach” Baas! Anyway you look at it, it’s a win/win. Don’t want to enter? Then come out just to look. You’re sure to find a styling cue that rings your bell or a fabrication trick you’ll put to use. The Cycle Source Chopper Show is presented by GEICO Insurance and it guarantees delivery of killer custom bikes in all classes. Those classes include: Sportster, Big Twin, Bagger, Chopper, Bobber, Asian Import, European Import, Antique, Best Panhead, Best Knucklehead, Best Shovelhead, Best Evo, Best Twin Cam, Best Paint and Best Trike. Registration is 9:00AM to noon, judging lasts till 4:00 PM, and awards are on the Jägermeister Stage at 5:00 PM. (Hint: There’s a free Pancake breakfast at the Sons of Light Ministry tent till 11:00 AM, plus free music, the Seattle Cossacks Drill Team, Roller Derby and more at the Crossroads. Plus the Michael Lichter-curated Motorcycles as Art Show is free for the viewing at the Buffalo Chip Russ Brown Event Center.) Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2015 Sturgis Rider 5 Minutes with Mike Draper When Evel Knievel’s Mack truck, Big Red, first transported the infamous daredevil to performances, only two men got behind the wheel of the custom rig. Mike Draper is one of them and he was there, up close, to witness both Evel’s successes and his failures. SRD: How did you come to work for Evel? Mike Draper: I was working at Hugo’s H-D in Wichita and Evel came to do a show. Hugo was a promoter and he had Evel come in to perform at the flat track races. Another guy at the shop, Lee Ratliff, started driving for Evel then and a few months later Lee got in touch to say they needed another driver and asked if I want to do it. So that’s how I started. SRD: And you drove Big Red? MD: Yeah, the truck was pretty new then, it was around 1971. The first event I drove to Evel crashed in practice and hurt his back so bad he had to hire Wicked Ward to do the jump for him. That was the only time another jumper performed for him. Evel had to perform the next weekend but he wasn’t even close to healed so he put a brace on under his leathers. He did the jump and it was a success but back in the coach he was really sweating, you could tell there was a lot of pain. SRD: Does a particularly memorable trip come to mind? MD: When Evel was in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade we hauled the motorcycles out to New York all the way from California just so he could perform for maybe five minutes. They put us up at the Plaza hotel and we couldn’t believe it. We were used to the Motel 6 when Evel was paying. SRD: What was so special about the truck? MD: Big Red was top of the line in the ‘70s and it was an automatic. We’d get to truck stops and other drivers would all come to look, it was so unusual. SRD: That wasn’t typical? MD: It was the first automatic Mack. See, Evel had hurt his hip in the Caesar’s Palace crash and working a clutch was difficult for him, so the truck was customized as an automatic. When I started driving it I kept going for the clutch with my left foot till I got used to it. But it wasn’t a performance truck, it was a 6 not an 8. Evel didn’t want anyone hot-rodding it. SRD: Did you have other responsibilities? MD: We were concerned with his safety and making sure the motorcycles worked right. Our job was to make him look as good as we could. But I learned early on, you couldn’t get headstrong with Evel. You had to make sure everything was his idea. SRD: Did he ever let his guard down? MD: On his own he was pretty relaxed. But when people were around he was back to his EK persona, talking about his boats and how much money he spent on things. But that persona sold tickets! He used to tell us, ‘You guys stick with me and you’ll never have to work again!’ SRD: Was Evel a good boss? MD: He always told us, ‘There’s a right way, a wrong way, and a Knievel way. As long as you work for me it’s the Knievel way. If something screws up but you did everything I told you to do, it’s back on me.’ So that’s a pretty good boss. SRD: Why do you think Evel had such an impact? MD: Those were turbulent times with the Vietnam War and things changing so much. People had to have a hero and at the time he was the guy with the biggest jock strap. Daily Page 3 Page 4 Sturgis Rider Recognizing contributions, Showing Respect Daily the 2015 Hall of Fame Inductees The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame welcomes a new class of inductees today at a breakfast gala starting at 9:00 AM at The Lodge at Deadwood. A $35 donation to the Museum gets you a ticket and you can still make it if you hurry. This year, John Paul DeJoria, a member of the class of 2004, will serve as Master of Ceremonies as eight individuals are recognized for their contributions to motorcycling, through racing, industry and motorcycle rights endeavors. Let’s meet them: Everett Brashear was one of the top AMA dirt track racers in the 1950s. He made history when he won the first AMA National held in Sturgis in August of 1952. That win, aboard Harley-Davidson’s new KR model, provided significant bragging rights for the Motor Company and netted considerable publicity for Sturgis. Brashear went on to win more Nationals until he was sidelined by injury in 1954. Sugar Bear opened his own shop in South Central Los Angeles in 1971 and since that time he has been hand-building his signature chopper front ends; that’s over 40 years! His love affair with choppers started when he passed a couple riding one on the freeway and despite not knowing how to ride he went out and bought a bike, which he promptly chopped, of course. A natural born teacher, he mentors young people and supports effort to encourage next gen riders and builders. Don Tilley was known as an expert welder, mechanic, tuner and undaunted race competitor. A well-respected Harley-Davidson dealer, he opened his first shop in Statesville, North Carolina in 1972 and a second in Salisbury, NC, in 1999. No one rode more than Don Tilley; a thousand mile day was run of the mill to him. Sadly, Don was killed last year in a motorcycle accident. His wife, son and daughters continue his legacy at the dealerships. Eddie Trotta has been building custom choppers and baggers at his shop in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, since the late ‘80s. A speedboat racer and piano virtuoso as well, he also supports community organization such as the Boys & Girls Clubs. He is the founder and owner of Thunder Cycle Designs, which focuses on imagination, craftsmanship and attention to detail in every motorcycle build. Chris McIntyre is the co-founder of EagleRider, the world leader in providing a full range of motorcycle experiences, including rentals, tours, bike sales and service, parts and apparel. Chris and his partners opened the first EagleRider in Los Angeles in 1994 with a fleet of 4 HarleyDavidsons. The company has since grown to over 100 locations worldwide employing over 400 people and delivering dreams for more than 100,000 riders annually. Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2015 DAILY LEGAL TIP By Chuck Koro Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys One of the first to recognize the value of customizing a touring bike, John Shope has become a designer and producer of quality custom motorcycles, and a parts supplier to the industry. His company, Dirty Bird Concepts has been featured in numerous magazines and TV shows, including last year’s Biker Battleground on the History channel. John has mentored student build teams at Sturgis Brown High School. For 2015, the J.C. “Pappy” Hoel Outstanding Achievement Award goes to Chief Jim Bush of the Sturgis Police Department. Bush joined the Sturgis Police Reserves in 1978, was hired as a full time officer in 1979 and worked his way up through the ranks. Serving as the Chief of Police in Sturgis since 1990, Chief Bush has worked tirelessly to make the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally a success for visitors and locals alike. SAVE YOUR DAMAGED GEAR When a motorcyclist is injured by a negligent driver, insurance companies will sometimes deny that the rider’s injury was caused by the accident. One client was rear-ended and thrown over his handlebars, slamming and scraping both elbows in the process. A month later, the rider was diagnosed with ulnar nerve damage and required surgery. Subsequently, the same procedure had to be done to the other elbow. The offending driver’s adjuster claimed that the elbow injuries were unrelated to the accident. Although the motorcyclist was advised to keep all his gear, he disposed of his leather jacket. It had been ripped at both elbows--evidence connecting the elbow injuries to the accident. Ultimately, a witness confirmed that, at the scene, he noticed that the elbows of the jacket were torn. A shop salesman, who the rider had asked about having the jacket repaired, also confirmed the tears. Your damaged property can be crucial evidence, as well as a reimbursable expense. If you have been involved in a motorcycle accident and there is the potential for a claim by any of the involved parties, do not throw anything out. Sturgis Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2015 Rider Daily Page 5 The Eagle 75: A living image A chance like this only comes along every 75 years Fly like an eagle to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Sturgis Rally! Here’s how: When the Freedom Celebration Ride rolls into the CrossRoads at the Buffalo Chip on Thursday August 6th the riders will convene at the Field of Flags to create a giant living montage shaped like an eagle in flight and made up of motorcycles and people. This is no rowdy crowd squeezing together on Main Street for another annual picture – it’s bigger, way bigger, in every way. Inspired by the living image of an eagle formed by soldiers and nurses in 1918, this mega montage of bodies and bikes will be arranged by performance artist John Quigley to form a soaring eagle. A photographer in a helicopter flying overhead will record the happening for posterity. This singular event is presented by Black Hills Clean Water Alliance, the Chip, and SpectralQ to celebrate the Sturgis 75th, recognize the freedoms we enjoy in America, and honor the active military and veterans who keep them secure. Motorcycle parking starts at 1:00 PM and the Freedom Celebration riders arrive at 3:00 to cap it off. Page 6 Sturgis Rider Daily Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2015 an American Hero Comes Home Thanks to Mad Vapes Sweepstakes T his story has a fairy tale ending. Army veteran and Deadwood, SD, native Brent Stott completed two tours in Afghanistan before coming back to the States and starting college on the G.I. Bill in North Carolina. Attending the Sturgis 75th was a dream, not only because of the rally’s anniversary status but it would allow him to visit his family back in the Black Hills, too – an otherwise too-expensive prospect. But Stott is not only here at the Rally he’s here in first class style and a chance entry in a sweepstakes made it all possible. It was even free to enter the sweepstakes! Stott is a guest at the Sturgis 75th compliments of Mad Vapes, the largest vape brand in the country and one of the best companies in the industry, according to Mad Vapes Chief Marketing Officer Mike Schriefer. “Mad Vapes has quickly grown from a home-based business to an industry phenomenon,” said Schriefer. “We ’ll have 100 brick and mortar stores by end of year and are working toward 1000 within the next four years.” Their online presence is strong, too. As the winner of the Mad Vapes Ultimate Trip to the Chip, Stott received round trip airfare to Rapid City, a luxury RV onsite at the Buffalo Chip for the entire rally, an Indian motorcycle to use all week, a 75th anniversary edition Epiphone guitar and VIP status for Chip concerts every night. That’s an epic package worth over $29,000 that anyone would be ecstatic to receive! But it’s especially gratifying to Stott who gets to mix family with pleasure as he comes home to the Black Hills. We tried to reach Stott for comment but it seems he was out riding that Indian and connecting with his family. Who can blame him? Of course, as the sweepstakes winner Stott also gets passes to the Ultimate Vapes Lounge, a new venue this year at the Chip adjacent to the Budweiser Party Deck that taps in to the relatively new vaping community that has developed in recent years. As Schriefer explained, vaping lounges are popping up around the country as vaping has become a hobby for a lot of consumers, somewhat like coffee shops or high-end bars. “Opening the Mad Vapes Lounge at the Chip creates a comfortable place for customers to get product, hang out, vape and watch the shows at the Chip,” he said. The Mad Vapes Lounge has a juice bar with over 50 flavors for vapers to sample along with a mobile store to provide the products vapers need and want. “We can satisfy anyone’s flavor needs,” Army veteran Brent Stott (center) won the Mad Vapes Sweepstakes and came home to the Sturgis Rally. said Schriefer, so stop up and see what’s on offer. The Buffalo Chip has a history of welcoming riders home, and you can tell by looking at the gates you ride through each day and the smiling faces you find when you get here. Mad Vapes not only gets that but they have stepped up to the plate in a big way. Mad Vapes’ partnership with the Chip is bringing riders, and vapers, home to the Sturgis Rally and rolling out the welcome mat to them— riders such as Brent Stott. And it’s that part—the motorcycle riding—that’s the nugget of this. It’s the love of riding motorcycles that brings us together here, time after time. So make sure you explore this spectacular area and enjoy all it has to offer. Then come home to your campsite and park the bike for the night. Take a deep breath to recount the day, bench race a bit and decompress with a few drinks. And that’s part of the beauty of camping at The Best Party Anywhere™— when the party starts, you’re already home. Let’s face it: it can be risky riding with this much traffic. It’s just plain dangerous to add other variables into the mix. Chipsters learned long ago that everything they want is right here: the best concerts, the best friends, and the best facilities that add up to the best rally experience. Another thing they know? Visit the American Motorcyclist Association’s (AMA) rider oasis at the Buffalo Chip CrossRoads. This is the next-to-last stop on an eightstop tour that has taken AMA reps to the major rallies across the country in 2015. Why? The goal of the initiative, said Director of Marketing Mark Christian, is to “support the riders and let them know we’re fighting for them, in D.C. and back at the state level, too with our partners in ABATE. We want them to learn about us.” AMA membership has benefits, too. Said Road Riding Coordinator Rob Baughman, “The big one is roadside assistance, not only for your motorcycle but your truck, car, RV, trailer and for all your family members, too.” A group of benefit partners offer discounts when you show your AMA card and members can participate in clubs, tours and events at both local and national levels. Every rider needs to make a commitment to a motorcycle rights organization. The AMA has the horsepower to make things happen.
