JANAURY 2013 PAGE 7 The 2012 Squadron Cruise Raised $1170 The ship has docked, the cruisers are safely home. The recent squadron cruise generated $1170 for our treasury. The 14 night cruise aboard Celebrity’s “Eclipse” was highlighted by two fun events sponsored by our cruise specialist, Cathy Innes. First was the champagne party, hosted on the balconies of the McWhorter’s and Worssam’s. The second, a marvelous, fun-filled martini tasting cocktail hour at the famed martini bar. A great time was had by all. Thanks, Cathy. Visiting the eastern and southern Caribbean, the cruise not only included a number of ports along the way, but five sea-days as well. There was plenty of time for socializing and a few stops in the casino (the Bilge Mouse came home a winner!). Another highlight was a visit to the “Sweetfield Manor” in Barbados, a ‘Bed & Breakfast” owned and operated by former Hobe Sound residents, George and Ann Clark. Les & Donna are P/C Les & Donna McWhorter presented a check for $1170 to Cdr Joyce Newman at December’s diner meeting. There is a wide range and a quantity of classics that few if any of us could have on our own. Thanks to P/R/C Eldridge, SN, the bookshelves installation has been greatly strengthened (to hold all the weight) and many new donations have been cataloged, labeled, and shelved (photo above). How do I find a book? The classic way to find a book continues to be to stop by the library rack at the headquarters building; look through the library catalog notebook (our equivalent of the card catalog at your typical library) to browse by subject, title, or author for something of interest; select the desired book from the library shelves (organized in order of increasing Dewey decimal system numbers); and then sign out the book (in your name) on sign-out clipboard located on one of the library’s shelves. Upon returning the book to the library, the sign-out clipboard is updated with the date you returned the book. A new alternate way to located the books that might be of interest to you, created for the new electronic age, is to first click on the Subject list link below (that will bring up a printable Acrobat (.PDF) file on your computer screen) and determine what Dewey decimal numbers correspond to the subjects that might interest you. The second step, based on the Dewey decimal number that was found to be of interest in the first step, would be to click on the Index list link below and browse through to find what book we might have that have the subject related Dewey decimal number corresponding to the subject of interest (found in the first step above). The printable Index list includes a “wish list” column so that you can put a check mark in that column (on a printed copy) so that you will have it for future reference (at the library and/or for a reminder of what to ask for in an email request to the librarian). Alternately, you could look through the Title of Author (wish list augmented) lists if you are looking to see if we have a specific book that you are looking to see if we have. In summary, the electronically available catalof lists that are available for the PBSPS library include the following: a) Subject cross reference list link = Subject list ; b) Index lookup wish list link = Index list ; c) Title lookup wish list link = Title list ; and d) Author lookup wish list link = Author list How do I get a book? a) During your next visit to headquarters (class, meeting, or arrangement to meet someone with a key at the front door), bring your wish list, find the book on the shelves via the Dewey decimal number on the book spine, and sign it out on the clipboard located on one of the library’s shelves. b) Send an email request note to the squadron Librarian. Please include the details of the book you are requesting and your candidate (alternate) pickup arrangement possibilities. A Merit Mark (MM) is awarded by the chief commander to a member who has contributed substantial effort in furthering the objectives of USPS, its districts and squadrons within a calendar year. It is a coveted award; it is by and large the only official recognition members receive for their efforts. Only one merit mark may be awarded in a year to a member, no matter how extensive the contribution. A certificate is issued and a special insigne may be worn on USPS uniforms for each merit earned by the member.
