I
t is truly inspirational and gratifying when
we are able to reconnect with our alumni
students and their families. The annual report
of our VISION newsletter is an extra special
edition because it gives us the opportunity to
feature our alumni students on the cover. These
are stories of unlimited promise for the
children and families we served yesterday, are
serving today, and will continue to serve
tomorrow.

This picture of Cecily Mosca, left, and
Adalisa Santiago, right, was taken on January
15, 1999 when they were guests at Lincoln
Heights Elementary School’s “I Have a
Dream” assembly to honor Martin Luther
King, Jr. The two girls were at the assembly
with their moms to share their stories and to
promote the “Kids for Kids” Penny Drive for
the Spokane Guilds’ School Foundation. As
they waited for their presentation to begin,
Faris Charbonneau, founder of the Penny
Drive, pulled a book from her purse and gave
it to the girls to pass the time. The picture was
taken by photographer Jonathan Kirshner of The
Spokesman-Review and has hung in our large
conference room since then as a constant visible
reminder of what we are about at the Spokane
Guilds’ School & Neuromuscular Center
(SGS&NMC). A significant sign describing, at a
glance, the vast potential of the precious and
diverse children we have served for the past
fifty-two years.
Cecily lives in Spokane and will be a
seventeen-year-old senior next year at Lewis &
Clark High School. I had the opportunity to visit
with Cecily, her mom, Haley, and two siblings
at their home this summer. Cecily is a warm,
charming, engaging young woman that has a
beautiful smile, while at the same time exhibits
a sweet shyness. Cecily was born with
arthrogryposis. You can read more about this
rare congenital condition in “The More You
Know…” article in this edition of the VISION.
Cecily’s arms and hands were affected which
led to her remarkable ability to use her feet for
almost everything she does. We visited about
her school experience, which she said was
usually positive. Cecily loves to read and work
on her computer. She has great aspirations of
attending the University of Washington after
high school and for the past two summers has
taken part in the Disabilities, Opportunities,
Internetworking, and Technology (DO-IT)
program. DO-IT scholars are college-capable
high school students with disabilities who have
leadership potential and are taught to select and
use adaptive technology, software, and online
resources. They experience college life on
campus in the summer, exploring academics and
careers. Cecily also shared with me that her
favorite subjects currently are chemistry and
psychology. She enjoys reading and babysitting
and would love to find summer employment.
Adalisa now lives in Virginia with her
family who has lived in a number of places in
the United States due to her dad, John’s, military
career. Adalisa was born with spina bifida which

Executive Director’s Message
T
he August edition of the VISION is
our annual report. In reading and
reviewing it I think you will be
impressed with all that has been
accomplished this year. Our
organization can feel great pride in
what it has done to make a significant
difference in the lives of 200 infants
and toddlers, birth to three years of age,
with a wide spectrum of developmental
issues. The parents and the families of
the children tell us how much was done
for their child, but also what was done
for them as parents, their child’s
siblings and the whole family. The
program is one of total intervention and
comprehensive emergence. The view
from the top is often so clear and
revealing. The goal is to make things
better. In the nearly 35 years I’ve
worked at the school, the parents have
consistently told me it was the complete
experience that helped them and their
children achieve amazing outcomes.
What a rewarding reality for the staff,
volunteers, boards, donors and me.
For me, reading the VISION each
quarter is so satisfying. I enjoy the
parents’ stories about their children and
families, the All-Star Staff, Wilde
Flowers, Alumni Stories, Leaving a
Legacy, The More You Know, Of
Special Interest, updates on the
program and recognition of our
wonderful donors. We are truly blessed
and very thankful for all of the good
that is generated by the program. The
school is a fun place where amazing
things happen every day.
Funding for the school was a big
problem this year. As I have always told
the board, this is not a program with an
expense problem, rather it is a program
with an income problem. Our expenses
are closely tracked and we rarely have
any variance between the proposed
budget and the actual ending result. The
income on the other hand is difficult to
predict because government support is
shrinking each year. Building our
foundation has been a fantastic effort
and the greatest case for its creation has
been the reduction in government
support. We need both. Before we can
ask donors for one penny, we need to
make sure we have secured every
government dollar that we are entitled
to. We are dedicated to this effort but
the times are challenging.

limitless possibilities in life.”

Making the Magic Happen
School Board President’s Message
T
he Spokane Guilds’ School &
Neuromuscular Center’s board
members enjoy the opportunity to hear
the story of one of our students and their
family at most of our meetings. This
chance to meet an incredible little
person and the people who surround
and support them provides the board
insight into the Magic that is the
Spokane Guilds’ School. We hear
repeatedly what an incredible,
supportive, giving place the school is,
and see the transformations the school
enables in the lives of its students and
their families. This monthly window
into the Magic of the school through the
eyes of the families and our students is a
great encouragement to our board to
strive to protect the Magic of the school
and to be able to reach as many children
as possible.
The Magic does not happen by
magic—it takes an incredibly dedicated
and gifted staff who truly loves each
and every child, an administration that
finds a way to enable the staff to do the
utmost that we can for each child,
volunteers that spend countless hours
doing immeasurable good, and
families that walk a path with
challenges that bring about joy that
many will never understand!
The coming year will bring many
of the same issues we have seen in the
last two years—how does the
Spokane Guilds’ School still create
the Magic in the daunting face of
budgetary, economic and regulatory
challenges? I am confident that
through the leadership, vision and
dedication of our board, staff,
volunteers, families and
administration and the generosity of
our supporters, we will continue to
see the Magic happen in the lives our
students and their families.

Your help is needed to ensure no child is ever turned away
At the Spokane Guilds’ School & Neuromuscular Center
(SGS&NMC), every effort is made to focus on our successes instead of our
challenges. A child with cerebral palsy, for example, may be unable to
walk, but can work on developing better coordination of their hands and
fingers. Another child may be unable to speak, but is learning sign language
as a means of communication. With all of our successes, we don’t always
voice our needs and our concerns for the future.
As many as 85% of the families we serve at SGS&NMC fall at or
below the 250% poverty level. Did you know that even for families with
insurance coverage, it is not unusual for the therapy benefit to run out
before the need for services expires? A family may have wonderful
insurance coverage, but frequently the therapy benefit is exhausted by July
or August of the calendar year, leaving several months where services are
provided, but no fees are collected to pay for those services. What that
means is that a great deal of the services we provide for these kids and
families go uncompensated or are underfunded.

Announcing the Spokane Guilds’ School &
Neuromuscular Center’s new website!
“We believe that this new website will provide users with an opportunity to learn more about our mission and program at the
SGS&NMC and how our staff is helping children in Spokane succeed,” said SGS&NMC Executive Director, Dick Boysen. “We
are excited to be able to share our message about the program for infants and toddlers with developmental delays that we provide
at the school.”
The website, www.guildschool.org, features:
• stories about our children and their families,
• important information for parents of children
with disabilities,
• upcoming special event information,
• a video gallery,
• newsletter archives, and
• opportunities to donate to the school.
“How Can I Help?” is a new feature of the website
which simply outlines how sponsors, donors and
potential donors can help little ones at the school receive
the services and care that they need. Information about
giving monthly or other types of recurring gifts,
honorariums and memorials, and sponsoring a
fundraising event is more accessible and easy for donors
and potential donors to use.
We are grateful to SiteCrafting for awarding us a
Gear Grant to cover the costs of our new site! They have
been wonderful to work with and we appreciate their

We’d like to introduce you to
the special people who devote
themselves to the daily operation
of SGS&NMC – the therapists,
teachers, management and staff. AllStar Staff will appear in each issue
of VISION and will profile a different
member of our team every quarter.

I
found great strength, courage, and
conviction in a woman whose life
journey has taken her to great heights
(literally!) despite some challenges,
which has allowed her to develop a
large heart filled with compassion and
appreciation for those that know her.
Joy was born and raised in
Bismarck, ND. She was very close to
both her parents, but had a special bond
with her mother. “I have so many happy
childhood memories with my family!”
she recalls. Joy’s only sibling is her
brother Chuck, 17 years her senior.
After a campus visit to the University of
Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA with her
parents, Joy decided to study
occupational therapy. When she
completed her degree in 1972, Joy
began working for the Everett School
District in Everett, WA. There she
worked with children from three to
21-years-old. In 1990, she moved to
Omaha, NE where she worked at Meyer
Children’s Rehabilitation Institute, an
affiliate of the University of Nebraska
Medical Center. Joy said, “I really
enjoyed working with babies and their
families, but my comfort zone, at that
time, was in the schools.”
In 1990, Joy met Trent Carey
through a course she was taking at the
Outdoor Venture Center at the
university. The next year, the couple
came to Spokane to visit friends,
Stephen and Debbie Sheehan. “We
came for Thanksgiving and we both
really liked the area.”
Debbie, who was working for the
Mead School District as a physical
therapist, told Joy about an available
occupational therapist position with the
district. Joy applied, but she also
pursued another job opportunity. She
shared, “I had taken a course at the

Neuromuscular Center (SGS&NMC) in

I have of

moms and dads of our Spokane Guilds’
School children. I always tell them,
“If I ask you any questions that are
uncomfortable, or if something about
your child is too difficult to share,
please tell me.” In more than 12 years,
no one has ever said, “that’s uncomfortable.” All have been excited to talk
about their special child, no matter
how difficult their situation. So it was
with Nikki Thomas, a proud stay-athome mom. She is a beautiful young
woman and was excited to tell me
about her and her husband Jonathon’s
son Dylan. “He’s so bright,” she says,
smiling. Dad is a brick mason, who
met his future wife through mutual
friends on Christmas day eight years
ago. They married three years later and
settled in Spokane to raise a family,
but it didn’t happen as quickly or easily as they had hoped. They lost two
babies before Nikki was pregnant with
Matthew, their oldest son. “It was very
scary,” she told me. They were both,
understandably, concerned during her
third pregnancy. But all the fear and
worry melted away when Matthew was
born a healthy baby.
Those same fears and concerns
came reeling back when Nikki
was pregnant with Dylan. But this
pregnancy too, went well with no signs
of health issues with the baby. When
she went into labor with Dylan, he
was born twenty minutes later! It was
that fast! All was great until he was
five months old and Dylan was not
doing the things his big brother did at
five months. At seven months, he still
was not showing any signs of sitting
up, trying to talk or walk…things that
seven-month-olds usually do.
It was time for testing so an MRI
was scheduled. It was to be a great
day because they were also celebrating

Nikki’s mother’s birthday. Sadly, that
day will always be remembered for
something else. The results of the MRI
showed a serious problem that would
change their lives forever. Nikki and
Dylan were immediately sent to a
neurologist. “It was the worst day of
my life,” she told me. They learned
Dylan had suffered a stroke in-utero.
That stroke caused an arachnoid cyst to
form on one third of the baby’s brain,
which did not leave enough room
for the corpus callosum to form. In
layman’s terms, it means the left and
right sides of his brain are unable to
communicate.

Dylan started therapy at the
Spokane Guilds’ School and Neuromuscular Center (SGS&NMC) last
August. In September, Dylan had brain
surgery. It’s hard to comprehend the
words “brain surgery” and baby in the
same sentence. A shunt was put in to
take pressure off Dylan’s brain. He was
supposed to go home the next day, but
that didn’t happen. He was in the hospital a week because he was so sick—
his vitals were good, but there was so
much vomiting. Nikki was at Dylan’s
side 24/7 while Jon worked and took
care of Matthew. The two of them

came to the hospital every day. Nikki’s
mom, Patti, was also a constant at her
grandson’s bedside. “It was really hard
on my Mom,” shared Nikki. I thought
about how difficult it must be to watch
your daughter suffer with worry for
her baby.
It’s been a year now since Dylan
began therapy. It’s been “amazing”
how much progress he’s made says
mom. He has occupational therapy
with Dan Fall, physical therapy with
Shirley Carlson, special education
with Shirley Riley and speech therapy
with Nikie Noldin.” He’s doing so
well, “Mom tells me, “He couldn’t sit
on his first birthday, last August, and
now he’s sitting up. He’s also talking
(daddy, momma, and bubba) and
signing. He scoots on his butt to get
where he wants to go.” Nikki’s eyes lit
up when she told me, “The best thing
is he’s walking! He’s using a walker…
but he’s walking.”
Of course, there are everyday
worries. If he falls and hits his head,
its back to the ER or to see his
neosurgeon to make sure his shunt
is OK. He sees his neurologist and
neosurgeon every three months. That
will eventually be every 6 months and
then once a year. If all goes as well as
it has been, he won’t have to have his
shunt replaced until he’s a teenager.
Nikki summed up his progress, telling
me, “He’s eating on his own. He
communicates on his own. He gets
around on his own.” So much to be
thankful for. Within his diagnosis is
such a wide spectrum of unanswered
questions as to what Dylan will or
will not be able to do—it has yet to be
determined—but Nikki is optimistic.
Dylan’s big brother, Matthew, is
three. He is quite a charmer and has
impeccable manners. Nikki shares,
“He is 100% a great big brother.
Dylan points to him and says, ‘bubba
bubba!’” When Matthew was three, he
was diagnosed with epilepsy. It took
three difficult attempts to find the right
mix of medication to help with his seizures, but thankfully, he is now seizure
free during the day. He still has them at
night, but sleeps through most of them.
In spite of all the progress, it’s not
always easy for this Mom and Dad.
Dylan has a terrible temper. Nikki is
convinced that her son knows what he
wants to do but just cannot…yet. He

can’t, and it frustrates him. He cried
hard every day for 5 months. Since
Dylan been at the SGS&NMC, he
doesn’t do that anymore. Mom credits
his therapists. Dylan, who wasn’t too
sure about being there in the beginning
now says “going to school to play?”
Nikki enjoys talking to the other
parents too. “It’s comforting knowing
we aren’t alone.”
Nikki’s love and appreciation for
all that the school means to her family
was heartwarming to witness. “We
can’t say enough about how amazing
this place and these people are,”
bubbled Nikki. I wished everyone who
works at the school could have been in
the room to hear this energetic, loving,
dedicated mother share her family’s
love for the school. The Thomas family
and the SGS&NMC family are a
perfect match!

Of Special Interest…
Our continued thanks to JOHN TIFFANY of DIRECT MAIL ENTERPRISES for providing his mailing service
for the quarterly distribution of the VISION free of charge.
Thank you to SGS&NMC alumni parents, Mike & Michelle Dullanty, who promised Wilson Elementary
students if they beat their penny drive goal, they would match half of what they
raised. Wilson Wildcats rose to the challenge and raised $865.53. The Dullantys
matched half by donating, $432.77, bringing Wilson’s grand total to $1,298.30.
Thank you Mike & Michelle. GO WILDCATS!
We wanted to thank the 65 schools that raised a total of $38,265.52 (an increase
of $10,975.47 from last year) for the Spokane Guilds’ School Foundation’s
“Kids for Kids” Penny Drive schools awareness program. Eleven schools of these
schools raised over $1,000 each, which is truly incredible! These schools are:
Greenacres Middle School-$1,085.51, Mead High School-$1,139.01, Freeman
Schools-$1,243.91, Moran Prairie Elementary-$1,261.64, Chase Middle
School-$1,290.45, Wilson Elementary-$1,298.30, Salk Middle School-$1,304.21,
Lewis & Clark High School-$1,422.61,
Sacajawea Middle School-$1,714.75, Farwell Elementary-$1,929.80
and Woodridge Elementary-$3,093.00! We are so grateful for all of the
students who showed this year, and every year for the past 16 years, that no
matter how small, every penny counts because every child counts! Thank
you!

High School Advisory Board “Golden Penny” Spirit Award Winners
This year, we are excited to announce that Melaina Kohlieber and Desmond
Erickson from Deer Park High School are the winners of the 2012 “Golden
Penny” Spirit Award Competition. Melaina and Desmond organized a brand
new Community Day site in Deer Park, worked with school, civic and
community leaders and provided 20 volunteers for their site. They did an
exceptional job and helped, with the other 11 high schools that participated
this year, raise over $4,000 for the “Kids for Kids” Penny Drive. Way to go
Melaina and Desmond!!
Once again Dale Torgerson of Seattle, WA has shared a special monetary gift with
the Foundation both in memory of his loving wife Pat Torgerson and in honor of his
grandson Blake Hagen who attended the Spokane Guilds’ School from 1997-2000.
Both Pat and Dale were enthusiastic, supportive grandparents of the school while
Blake was in attendance and continue to be generous supporters to this day. It is hard
for us to believe that Blake is 15 years old now. Dale, thank you for your loyal support,
you are a special blessing to the school.

Once again this year, our Garland District neighbors continue to support
the school with a generous gift raised from the Garland Street Fair. We are
extremely grateful to all the Garland Street Merchants who work tirelessly,
for months in advance, in preparation for this huge community gathering in
the Garland District. We are also appreciative of all the community-minded
individuals that take part in this endeavor. The fair is a symbol of this familyoriented neighborhood with all the rewards of what true neighbors are all about.
On behalf of all the children and families here at the Spokane Guilds’ School
& Neuromuscular Center we would like to send a SPECIAL THANK-YOU to
the Jordan Fund, in Bellevue, WA, for their kind and generous gift in support
of the school. The Jordan Fund’s mission is to provide support to children
with special needs and their families, which mirrors our mission. With grateful
appreciation we thank John & Kelly Olerud for their special gift from their
Jordan Fund in honor of their daughter, Jordan. The Oleruds know first-hand
the challenges parents face caring for a special needs child and wish to share their resources with others.
Thank you University of Washington (UW) and Eastern Washington
University (EWU). This summer we had the good fortune to share our
program with both of these outstanding universities. In May, Dr. Alicia
Quella, with the UW MEDEX Northwest program brought twenty-two
Physician Assistant Studies students to tour the school and learn more about
our early intervention program. Then again this June, Dr. Darl Vander
Linden brought a class of EWU Physical Therapy students to the school for a field observation experience. We
want to thank both of these enthusiastic classes for their time in learning about our program.
We want to give a big thank you to Torn Retina Productions and Ann Glynn for choosing the SGS&NMC as
their featured charity in June. They generously donated 50% ($410.75) of proceeds from the Pottery Place Plus
show held at Auntie’s Bookstore.
Thank you to SiteCrafting for their generous Gear Grant that
provided over $18,000 for the development of our new website. The
Gear Grant provided SiteCrafting personnel for development; website
design; user, file and page management capabilities; events calendar;
e-newsletter with search capabilities; site stats; one-on-one training;
and all documentation needed to use and maintain the site. SiteCrafting excels at developing unique web-based
solutions that make businesses more successful. Thank you for collaborating with us to grow our website!
We want to send a big thank you to Jim & Patty Hollingsworth for purchasing two additional iPad’s for use
in the Neuromuscular Center of the school. This wonderful technology is being put to good use by our nurses and
social workers in a number of interactive ways with parents: as an intake information tool, as a tool for parents to
use in filling out forms and surveys, and as a translation device for our Spanish and Russian speaking families just
to name a few. WOW! What a tremendous gift.

and friends? Thank you to Judy and Jerry Altig for making significant contributions
to both the school and our foundation by starting the Altig Family Fund in memory of

Arthrogryposis
With so many developmental
disabilities, delays, and rare
syndromes, it’s not surprising that
many people are overwhelmed. For
that very reason, we have created
“The More You Know”, a column
that focuses on a different
diagnosis in every issue of VISION
to aid understanding and address
the basic questions many have
never had the opportunity to ask.
O
ver the past 50 years, thousands of
children and their families in
Spokane County have been blessed by
the early intervention services that
therapists and teachers provide at the
Spokane Guilds’ School &
Neuromuscular Center (SGS&NMC).
The SGS&NMC offers services for
infants and toddlers with an array of
rare developmental delays and
disabilities. One of these rare diagnoses
is called arthrogryposis or
Arthogryposis Multiplex Congenita
(AMC). 1
As shown on the front cover of this
edition of the VISION newsletter,
Cecily Mosca, who has arthrogryposis,
is reading a book with her feet.
According to the website
arthrogryposis.net, arthrogryposis is
defined as, “a neuro-musculo-skeletal
disorder that affects various joints in the
body. The condition is congenital and
non-progressive…the joints in the body
show contractures, stiffness, poor
mobility or immobility and muscle
fatigue.” 2 Cecily is one of 3,000
children born every year in the U.S.
with a type of arthrogryposis. 3
Arthrogryposis.net lists symptoms
of arthrogryposis, which include, but
are not limited to:
Restricted joint mobility or joint
immobility, along with muscle
weakness.
The hip joint may be displaced.
In some children, facial deformities,
or respiratory and cardiac disorders. 4

potential is, that we just drive it forward
and we’re going to maximize what
potential they have. So often, we’ll get
kids in as babies or even older children
where the first thing that mom tells us
is, ‘We were told that this child will
never walk,’ as a newborn. That to me is
very troubling…I’ve had several kids
that even I secretly thought, ‘I don’t
know what this kid’s going to be able to
do’ and a few years down the road they
are walking or they are really
performing way beyond what I thought
they would be able to do.” 7

Documentary”, Dr. Harold van Bosse,
orthopedic surgeon with Shriners
Hospitals for Children—Philadelphia,
described that there are different types
of arthrogryposis and that this term is an
umbrella for a lot of different types of
diagnoses. One of the most well-known
diagnoses of Arthrogryposis is club
foot.

Child Profile
Brandon Schuller’s mom, Wendy, is the Head Coach of
the Eastern Washington University Women’s Basketball
Team. Brandon can often be seen sitting on the sidelines
with his dad, Mark, big brother, Rory, and sister, Megan, but
this little guy and his family are determined that he won’t
be sitting on the sidelines for long. “Brandon has started to
really get excited when he sees basketball or baseball
being played,” Wendy said. “We can’t wait to get him on
the court and diamond!”
Brandon, who was born with Down syndrome, is working
really hard to catch up developmentally to his peers. “His
tone is lower than a typical child and he has taken longer to
do certain things (walking, talking, etc.) than some kids,
but in all honesty, in the end he is a child who is growing
up and reaching milestones just as our other two kids did,”
Wendy said. “Maybe he reaches them at a different time,
but the joy that comes with each milestone is just as
special.”
Brandon started attending the SGS&NMC when he was
10 weeks old. After the shock of being told that their son
was going to have Down syndrome, Mark and Wendy acted
quickly and contacted the SGS&NMC to discuss therapy
options for their son. Brandon is now two years old and
receives occupational, speech and physical therapies at
the school. “Brandon is a tough and determined little guy,

but the early intervention has been a blessing from day
one,” Wendy said. “The school has also helped my
husband Mark and I immensely. We have loved being
involved with his therapies and then implementing many of
those activities into our life at home.”
Brandon loves to wrestle and play with his siblings, Rory
and Megan, and he also loves animals, especially his two
dogs and two cats.
“He is turning into an absolute character. His sense of
humor makes us laugh and he loves to have fun,” Wendy
said. “Every night when we put Brandon to bed we thank
God for bringing such a joy into our lives.”
