The matching grant was awarded to help cover costs for renovation. Improvements included removing a chalet-looking façade and painting the building and signs. Built in 1988 with an addition constructed in 1993, the Super 8 Motel has 55 guest rooms, employs 12 people and is currently owned by Shawano Hospitality, LLC. Manager Barb McKeefry believes the improvements will increase business. “First impressions are very important and we feel the fresh coat of paint and updated look will help to make that positive first impression and attract more guests,” said McKeefry. According to Nancy Smith, Executive Director of Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce, when lodging properties have more guests it fuels the tourism industry in Shawano County. “Visitors spent $62 million in Shawano County last year. Many visitors determine where they vacation according to the lodging properties available in the area. The more choices we have of nice looking, quality lodging, the more visitors will stay and spend their money here and that benefits us all,” said Smith. First impressions are important for a community as a whole. “Having well maintained businesses that look good helps with economic development. Prospective new business owners will see this and get the feeling that they want to be part of our community,” said McKeefry. Since 2013, thirty nine grants totaling $125,000 have been awarded to small businesses through the Vision 2017 Façade and Interior Grant programs. This has stimulated total private investment of over $920,000. Grants have been awarded to businesses throughout Shawano County in the communities of Tigerton, Wittenberg, Gresham, Eland, Bonduel, and Shawano. Any employer or entrepreneur operating in Shawano or Menominee Counties can apply for Shawano Country Vision 2017 grant programs. The plan’s overall goal is to spur capital investment and grow the economy by implementing specific action steps in key areas, including business expansion, attraction and recruitment; tourism/retail development, workforce issues, and community development. This plan was initiated three years ago by the board of directors of Shawano County Economic Progress Inc. and the Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce to proactively tackle economic challenges including several plant closures, job losses, and lower than average per capita income. It serves as one resource for future growth and prosperity and a stronger economic climate for Shawano and Menominee Counties. Over 120 super hero members of the Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce convened at Golden Sands Golf Community for the 26th annual Chamber Golf Outing on June 28th. Chad Kary is an Account Executive with Results Broadcasting. He studied Business and Marketing at UW Green Bay and has worked in the Shawano Community for the last 15 years, 14 of which were in the capacity of running the bar at Luigi’s, (a great networking position if ever there was one!). He is currently a commissioner on the City of Shawano Plan Commission, is on the Board of Directors for the Shawano Youth League and has been a youth softball coach for the last six years. Kary resides in Shawano and decided to become involved with the Chamber of Commerce because he Chad Kary believes it’s important to be an active member of the community in which one lives. “As an individual whose livelihood is very much dependent on the overall economic strength of my community, I feel that it is important to be influential at a decision making level. I bring a strong belief in the power of community involvement and a real sense of pride in our city and county.” said Kary. He enjoys public interaction and takes his role as a community member very seriously. “I think it is important to take an honest measure of our strengths and weaknesses as a city, county, and organization and use those strengths as a tool to improve the areas in which we may lack. I think this is most effectively done by taking a measured, rational, long-term view with a cohesive vision towards the future,” added Kary. Kary enjoys spending time with his wife and two children exploring the many fishing and camping spots our beautiful state has to offer He also coaches softball and spends a LOT of time in the summer breathing in diamond dust with a mouthful of sunflower seeds. When time allows he enjoys traveling, exploring, and sharing new experiences with his family. He is an avid reader, baseball fan, and has a very deft hand at housework avoidance. Backes Brat Haus & Meat Market hosted the July Business Connection. Attendees toured the store and enjoyed delicious samples Brenda Wendler won the Chamber Ambassadors’ Pot of Gold. Green Bay St., Shawano RSVP by calling: (715) 524-2139 How to Use Pokémon Go to Attract Customers—Catch ‘Em All! by Nancy Smith, Executive Director By now you’ve probably heard of Pokémon Go or have witnessed groups of people wandering around town while staring at their smartphones. Pokémon Go is a game for mobile devices in which players move throughout the real world to hunt for and capture digital Pokémon. In the short time since the game launched in early July it has surpassed the popularity of Facebook and Snapchat. According to my 25 year old son, this new game is very unique. It gets video-game playing people walking around outside (in the REAL world!) actually interacting with each other and visiting community landmarks and attractions. One of my first thoughts after hearing about this new game was --how can we get the people wandering outside our businesses to come in and spend money? In order to answer that question, I needed to learn a little more about the game, so I did what any “older” person would do and consulted a 19-year-old. Devlyn Koon works at the Shawano City-County Library, enjoys playing video games and has embraced the social aspects of Pokémon Go. “I’m an introvert—not comfortable socializing. This forces me to go outside and interact in a fun way,” said Koon. After a very brief tutorial from Devlyn here is what I know. Pokémon Go is a game about exploring the real world. Players—mostly between the ages of 18 and 35— visit different points of interest to collect items and catch Pokémon (virtual creatures) along the way. There are two types of locations in the game. The first are known as PokéStops, which are buildings or places of note around a city where players can go to get Poké Balls (used to capture the Pokémon) and other items. The other type of location is called a “Gym” where players battle their Pokémon. Both of these locations attract players throughout the day. As far as I can tell, there is no way to tell where the PokéStops and Gyms are unless you are playing the game…or if you ask one of the players. Since the game is GPS (geographically) based there are a number of ways you can use the game to attract local players to your location. Here are some ideas Devlyn had: Offer a discount or free beverage for players who have reached level 5 or greater. Activate a “Lure” at a nearby PokéStop and promote it on Facebook. This is a little more involved and costs a little money, but does get the attention of players. (If you would like more information ask a player or visit https:// www.shopify.com/retail/how-to-lure-pokemon-go-players-toyour-storefront) Here are some additional ideas: Help Pokémon players recharge their phones. This game creates a serious drain on cellphone batteries. Players will travel far from their homes to play. Invite players in to rest, recharge, and hopefully make a purchase. Host gym battle tournaments. If your business is closer to a Gym than a PokéStop, advertise that you will be hosting a tournament. Then on game day offer discounts to players who successfully become gym leaders. Host a community wide Poké-hunt that starts and ends at your business’s doorstep. Have staff join in the hunt in their branded shirts to make sure your business is visible. After the event, you can hold an after-party at your business to allow the players to compare their experience. This is especially effective for restaurants. Use Pokémon Go to increase your business’s visibility on social media. Offer customers a discount to take a screenshot of a Pokémon in your store or restaurant and post it on social media with a tag to your business. That will encourage other nearby players to stop in. Full disclosure: I have downloaded the app and enjoyed catching Pokémon and battling in a “gym” even though I didn’t exactly know what I was doing. And yes, there are Pokémon at the Chamber and yes, we are a PokéStop. The Wittenberg community has been home to the Walls of Wittenberg (WOW) for more than 10 years. The project has revitalized the area by bringing out some of its beauty and unique character through colorful murals, and drawing visitors to town. In addition to the murals, the organization maintains a WOWSPACE and an Art Park downtown. Recognizing the need for ongoing maintenance of these facilities, the late Susan Hanson encouraged the WOW board to create an endowment fund for WOW with the Shawano Area Community Foundation, which would support their operations for generations to come. After Hanson’s passing in 2015, her estate made a bequest to the fund, to begin to ensure that the facilities get the upkeep they need to serve the community and visitors to Wittenberg for years to come.
