We hope you all had an awesome Chanukah.
You should have come to our superb Chanukah
Party where we watched the Rugrats Chanukah
movie, ate latkes and sufganiyot, and made
Chanukiahs. Have no fear if you regret not
coming, we have another awesome event coming
up in the end of January, a NERUSY event for
freshmen, and a Lexington USY hosted dance.
The first upcoming event is just for
freshman. Hosted by Framingham USY,
Freshman Kinnus is a great time for freshmen to
meet and get to know each other without the
other grades around. Spend Friday night and
Saturday making new friends, and then continue
on to Lexington with them, joining the rest of the
region at LUSY’s 50th Anniversary Sock Hop
Dance. Freshman Kinnus starts on Friday,
January 7th and ends on the 8th at the Sock Hop,
which is open to all Senior USYers.
Two weeks after Kinnus and Sock Hop, on
January 22nd, TRUSY is going Snow Tubing!!!!
Back by popular demand, this event is sure to be
tons of fun, but only if you bring your friends.
We hope to see you at these wonderful
events and in the future.

Transitions are a difficult but important part of life. Three
weeks ago I came home from Israel, where I had been for three
months with Gann on the Alexander Muss program. It was an
amazing experience, and one that I feel blessed to have participated in. Like my transition from Israel back to my daily life in
the US, the next few parshiyot represent a transition in the Torah. And, like many transitions, it doesn’t seem positive at first
glance. Entering the transition, B’nai Yisrael are Egyptian citizens with Yosef, one of their people, a top government official.
However, in the first few verses of Shmot, they quickly dragged
down to being slaves. This seems harsh, but with every difficult
transition comes a blessing. In the last parsha of the book of
Breshit, Vayechi, Yaakov is on his deathbed. He had been the
great father of 12 sons who would go on to become the namesakes of the tribes. Today, we still call ourselves by his name,
Yisrael. As the great leader is about to die, beginning this negative transition for the Israelites, he takes the pains to bless his
two grandsons, Efraim and Menashe. In his blessing, he prays
that their descendants will multiply and fill the land of Israel.
Even as the people headed into 400 years of darkness in slavery, they always had the hope that Yaakov’s blessing would
come true. Eventually, they reached the promised land, and
they multiplied and filled its borders, just as Yaakov had said.
Therefore, when we’re going through hard transitions, or any
hard times, remember that there is always a blessing.

The past three months of my life have been unlike any in
my life thus far. I was born, and have always lived, in the
United States. While this country is my home, and I have a
comfortable life here, surrounded by friends and family, I have
another home as well, which I was privileged enough to live in
this year.
Israel has always seemed like a foreign country to me.
Though I knew, spiritually, that it was my home, every time I
mentioned its name in prayer, the modern state of Israel always seemed strange and distant. I could connect with the
Kotel, and with the other biblical sites, but I could never connect with Aroma, the Starbucks of Israel. That is the major
difference between visiting and living: when you live in a land,
not only to you explore its archeological sites and its nature,
but also its vibrancy and culture.
Before this year, I had been to Israel once before. I could
list off the different tourist sites I went, places such as Caesaria, Akko, and Masada. However, if you dropped me at a
street corner, and told me to get lunch and groceries, I would
end up ripped off and hungry.
Truly living, instead of visiting, in the land of Israel, has
changed this. I can tell you the most delicious shwarma places,
the best ice cream chain, and the largest grocery store. I can
name the nicest towns to visit, and not just the ones with biblical significance. I can haggle in a shuk, and find the nicest
beaches on the Mediterranean. To most Americans, Israel is
just the land of our prayers, perpetually kept in a state of antiquity. However, as I have learned, there is so much more.
