A few words from our Dean...
The Faculty of Medicine in Iasi was founded in 1879 and, for 130 years,
it has developed continuously as a serious medical school preparing the
youth for the medical profession. Concurrently, our Faculty has
functioned as an authentic scientific forum from where important
Romanian personalities from the medical scene such as Grigore T. Popa
have contributed decisively to the international affirmation of Romanian
medicine.
At present, the Faculty of Medicine in Iaşi enlists 400-500 students in each of the 6 years of
undergraduate studies. More than 600 of our students come from almost 40 countries as close as the
Moldavian Republic and as far as New Zealand. More than 600 teaching staff are responsible for their
instruction in the fundamental, clinical and complementary disciplines necessary for a holistic training
of future doctors. The Faculty also offers learning opportunities after the completion of an
undergraduate degree, with various Master and PhD programs and a package of training courses for
continuing medical education (CME). The Faculty prepares young residents in all specialities and
allows for PhD research in 36 specialities, thus guiding and updating medical professionals from the
Moldavian region and beyond.
Apart from these educational endeavours, the Faculty of Medicine is deeply involved in scientific and
medical research, as well as in the quality assurance of more than 10 university hospitals. It is not by
accident that the first scientific society from Romania was founded in 1833 in Iași, and that the Journal
of Medicine and Surgery belonging to the Society of Medics and Naturalists in Iaşi (1887) is the first
Romanian medical publication enjoying European prestige and promoting interdisciplinary research.
Our doors are open to all who wish to benefit from and build on such achievements while maintaining
the exigencies and standards of the European Union. This is possible through the development of
moral judgement, professional responsibility, team spirit and dialogue across generations and cultures.
Studying at the Faculty of Medicine is, therefore, a great opportunity for you to grow at both at a
personal and a professional level in an integrated way.
The decision to study medicine should not be taken lightly, and neither should the decision to study
abroad. My colleagues and I hope that, with the information enclosed in this brochure, you will find
enough arguments for you and your family to decide that you apply to study medicine at our Faculty in
Iaşi – Romania. Thank you!
Prof. Doina Azoicăi, MD, PhD
Dean of the Faculty of Medicine
The Medical Students’ Society Iasi
The Medical Students’ Society Iasi is the continuator of the oldest medical students’
organization of the country, being a non-governmental, apolitical association which sets as goal to
defend the rights of all medical students of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Gr. T. Popa”
Iasi and to contribute at the same time to its members’ personal development on many levels.
The Medical Students’ Society Iasi ensures, together with the other students’ associations from
the other faculties of the university (Stomatology, Pharmacy, Bionengineering), the correct lodging of
over 2000 students each year in the dormitories of the University and is involved in solving any
problem that student life at the University might raise. The Medical Students’ Society Iasi consists of
several departments: Public Health, Medical Education, External Relations, Orphanage Initiative,
Reproductive Health and AIDS, Human Rights, Social, Cultural, Sports and IT departments. Each of
these organizes numerous projects throughout the year, some that have already become traditions.
The enthusiasm, motivation and professionalism of the members are the main reasons for which our
projects and activities, whether local, national or international manage to attract and to get so many
other students involved. These projects are also very varied, with a wide addressability, from
kindergarten children (The Teddy Bear Hospital) to senior citizens (Together for your health), from
raising awareness campaigns on various common diseases (STDs, various forms of cancer) to
socializing activities with the children in orphanages, from local actions to national and international
events (Congressis – The International Congress for Medical Students and Young Doctors).
The Medical Students’ Society Iasi is a full-rights member of the National Alliance of the
Students’ Organizations in Romania (ANOSR) which is now the largest, most representative student
confederation of the country. At the same time, we are a founding member of the Federation of
Medical Students’ Associations in Romania (FASMR) which is part of the International
Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA), the most important international federation
of medical students, with over 100 country members, recognized by all the international authorities in
the field (WHO, UNESCO and so on).
The main belief of our members is that in order to be a truly good doctor, one needs a lot more
than just the medical knowledge offered in class. One also needs team spirit, communication skills,
altruism, a responsible and ethical behavior. To this purpose, the Medical Students’ Society Iasi
supports an active and fun student life that can lead to the formation of competent and complex adults,
through their implication in the faculty life and the projects organized by the Society.
Hippocratic Oath
“I swear by Apollo Physician and Asclepius and Hygieia and Panaceia and
all the gods, and goddesses, making them my witnesses, that I will fulfil
according to my ability and judgment this oath and this covenant:
To hold him who has taught me this art as equal to my parents and to live
my life in partnership with him, and if he is in need of money to give him a
share of mine, and to regard his offspring as equal to my brothers in male
lineage and to teach them this art–if they desire to learn it–without fee and
covenant; to give a share of precepts and oral instruction and all the other
learning to my sons and to the sons of him who has instructed me and to
pupils who have signed the covenant and have taken the oath according to
medical law, but to no one else.
I will apply dietic measures for the benefit of the sick according to my ability
and judgment; I will keep them from harm and injustice.
I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody if asked for it, nor will I make a
suggestion to this effect. Similarly I will not give to a woman an abortive
remedy. In purity and holiness I will guard my life and my art.
I will not use the knife, not even on sufferers from stone, but will withdraw
in favor of such men as are engaged in this work.
Whatever houses I may visit, I will come for the benefit of the sick,
remaining free of all intentional injustice, of all mischief and in particular of
sexual relations with both female and male persons, be they free or slaves.
What I may see or hear in the course of treatment or even outside of the
treatment in regard to the life of men, which on no account one must spread
abroad, I will keep myself holding such things shameful to be spoken about.
If I fulfil this oath and do not violate it, may it be granted to me to enjoy life
and art, being honored with fame among all men for all time to come; if I
transgress it and swear falsely, may the opposite of all this be my lot.”
WHERE we are
Our Faculty of Medicine is part of the "Gr. T. Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy (www.umfiasi.ro),
right in the heart of Iaşi, one of the largest cities in Romania.
Located in SE-central Europe, Romania is the country with the 9th largest territory and 7th largest population in
the European Union. Its capital is Bucharest in the south. Close to the NE border, Iaşi is one of Romania’s main
historical and cultural centres.
Iaşi is the economic, cultural and academic centre of the Romanian region of Moldova. This is where the first
university in Romania was founded. Nowadays, Iaşi is buzzing with about 70,000 students studying at several
public and private universities, coming in from the Moldova region and from throughout Romania, from the
Moldavian Republic across the NE border, from all over Europe and the world.
There are 5 cultural centres in Iaşi: British, French, German, Latin American & Carribean and Hellenic. There is
always some cultural event happening, either at the National Theatre (oldest in Romania), Opera House, State
Philarmonic, Atheneum, Botanical Garden (oldest and largest in Romania), Palace of Culture (see photo), at the
various other museums and art galleries or, simply, in the city centre or in one of its many parks.
There are many opportunities for students to engage in studies, interaction or artistic expression beyond their
curricula by participating in the programmes of the Students’ Cultural Centre, the Central University Library
(oldest in Romania), the different universities and student organisations within these universities.
To find out more about Iaşi or Romania, visit the Wikipedia. You will see how Iaşi is a truly generous
destination for anybody interested in enjoying the experience of getting a university degree.
WHY study here? Think OPPORTUNITY!
Why should you consider studying medicine at OUR Faculty? Here are just a few reasons we are
inviting you and your family to reflect on:
‐
Our Faculty has 130 years of experience in preparing the youth into the medical profession. This
brochure contains an overview of our current curriculum, taught by teachers with experience and
international exposure.
‐
Our programs and diplomas are accredited by the Romanian Ministry of Education, Research and
Innovation and they are recognized throughout the European Union. Our evaluation scheme is compatible
with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), should you wish to transfer to or from another
European university.
‐
You will be in direct contact with patients as early as the 3rd year of study as part of the main curriculum
(not to mention the summer internship starting after the 1st year). As a general rule, we will help you from
day 1 to develop practical knowledge and skills necessary to provide quality medical care with confidence
and expertise.
‐
You will get a taste of cutting edge medicine by attending and participating in many national and
international events on medical topic of current interest (conferences, symposia, workshops etc. delivered
by experts of international reputation).
‐
You can join a very strong and active Medical Students Society (SSMI) deeply involved in shaping the
vision and practice at our Faculty. Students elect their representatives in the Faculty Board and University
Senate. SSMI carries out a variety of projects benefitting those in need. SSMI arranges for international
exchanges for students and they set up interesting informal/nonformal workshops or training courses. Also,
SSMI organises the largest international congress for medical students and young doctors in Romania.
‐
You will meet and become friends with students from all over the world. In 2008-2009, our Faculty
was home to 612 international students from 39 countries (see map). It is like having the entire world in
one place, an incredible opportunity for intercultural dialogue and learning!
‐
You will be able to learn Romanian, a beautiful Romance language spoken by more than 23 million
people. Other Romance languages related to Romanian are French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.
‐
You will have the chance to discover Iaşi, Romania and Eastern Europe, a place full of history and
culture. You will gain a second home in beautiful Romania and a second family among the friendly and
hospitable Romanian people.
‐
You will be able to start a medical career in Romania or in cooperation with colleagues in Romania.
The Romanian medical research scene is very dynamic, addressing real problems and areas of concern
nowadays, as well as gaining international visibility.
All this adds up to materialize your dream of becoming a successful medical professional and a caring human
being, starting off into adulthood with a sound foundation of medical education, lifelong learning skills, moral
judgement and lasting relationships. Think OPPORTUNITY!
Our mission, our vision and our way of doing
The mission of our Faculty of Medicine is to produce and support young doctors capable of exercising
and advancing the medical profession with knowledge, competence, confidence and ethics anywhere
in the world.
‐
We do this by applying ancient wisdom and modern theories about learning processes and
learning styles.
‐
We do this by involving our learners in our decision making processes and in the formative
assessment of our teaching methods.
‐
We do this by embracing a morality of justice to universal human values and a morality of care
for every human being.
‐
We do this by respecting our cultural values while being open to those of others.
‐
We do this by learning from the past while challenging it, promoting the fertile blend of
tradition and modernism in education, science and medicine.
‐
We do this by observing the quality and standards of those organisations whose mission is to
make sure we deliver on our promises.
‐
We do this by being more than a teaching organization. We strive to be a LEARNING
organization where everyone has the right to benefit from and the responsibility to contribute to
the existence of the other.
This is our vision! This is how we can make your dream come true!
International relations, recognition and quality assurance
The Faculty of Medicine in Iasi has ongoing relations of scientific cooperation and academic exchange
with renowned universities from Europe and beyond: Freiburg, Lyon, Amiens, Dijon, Nancy, Louvain,
Torino, Parma and so on. Teachers and students travel to and from these universities in order to
organize, deliver or benefit from learning opportunities.
In recent years, our Faculty has been especially concerned with achieving curricular and organizational
compliance with the standards of the European Union. We recognize this as an ongoing process of
self-assessment, adjustment and certification regarding first and foremost the quality of the act of
teaching. An important step in this direction was the successful completion of two full academic
evaluations of our Faculty, one performed by the Evaluation Committee of CIDMEF (international
organisation representing the Deans of Faculties of Medicine from francophone countries, of which
our Faculty has been an active member since 1992) and another by ARACIS, the Romanian Agency
for Quality Assurance in Higher Education. These certifications provide a framework for comparing
and appreciating the teaching at our Faculty in European and international terms.
What is the European Credit Transfer System?
If you come from a non-European country or you have never heard of ECTS before, read this very
carefully. It contains basic information of great significance for studying at a European university such
as ours.
The ECTS has been designed and adopted throughout Europe in order to allow for transparency and
mobility. It works around the idea of providing a measuring system to quantify the relative charge of
the teaching in a given discipline. A ratio of hours/credits is calculated to reflect the relative
importance of the discipline and the demands on the student.
Our Faculty has had 10 years of experience with this system. The system is also used to provide a
reference grid when performing changes to a curriculum, so when we adopted the ECTS in 1998-1999,
we correspondingly underwent a curricular evaluation process.
Measuring the teaching and learning activity using credits makes possible the important benefits and
opportunities listed below:
‐
student mobility throughout Europe, including as beneficiaries of the Erasmus and Socrates
programs (in these programs, the mobility is funded by the European Union)
‐
guaranteed integral recognition of study periods at different universities using ECTS (either in
Romania or in other European countries)
‐
recognition of diplomas across Europe
‐
a more diverse academic offer from which students can choose more flexibly based on their
individual needs and interests
‐
comparison of academic offers across programs or universities
‐
compliance with / application of European standards in higher education.
In ECTS, the standard length of study of any given certain discipline is the semester. The normal load
of a semester is of 30 credits, irrespective of the number of disciplines making up the semester’s
curriculum. The credits, 60 per year, are distributed among disciplines according to their relative
importance to each other and the overall learning aims, while also providing balance in the volume of
work required of the student. Any curricular surplus or minus must be compensated in the other
semester of the academic year. Thus, a student who gets passing grades in all the disciplines studied
that year should normally accummulate 60 credits. Getting a passing grade in an exam means getting
all the credits for that discipline, irrespective of the grade.
Then, the number of points is calculated by multiplying the actual grade obtained with the number of
credits. Universities usually have policies regarding the minimum number of points needed to allow a
student to pass the year. By setting this limit, the university makes sure that a student cannot graduate a
year of study only by barely passing all the disciplines with the lowest passing grades possible. In
other words, you cannot become a doctor by just barely surviving your exams. You have to aim higher
than that!

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION
A variety of assessment and evaluation procedures are in place to ensure a fair appreciation of your
learning and useful feedback to help you improve. Assessment and evaluation are not separate from
your learning process. In order to maximize the learning experience, you should pay attention and get
involved through self-/peer-evaluation, as well as engage with formative evaluation under your
teachers’ guidance.
The grading system in place at our Faculty is made of grades from 0 to 10, 10 being the highest. In
order to pass, you need to score at least 5:
- 10 corresponds to A or Excellent - outstanding performance with only minor errors
- 9 corresponds to B or Very Good - above average standard with some errors
- 7-8 correspond to C or Good - generally sound work with a number of notable errors
- 6 corresponds to D or Satisfactory- fair but with significant shortcomings
- 5 corresponds to E or Sufficient -performance meeting the minimum criteria
- 4 corresponds to F or Fail - some more work required before the credit can be awarded
- 3, 2, 1 correspond to G or Fail - considerable further work is required.
GRADUATION
The completion of the six years of study is marked by a final examination procedure upon which you
may be awarded the graduation diploma and the title "physician”. This examination has three
components:
‐
a written exam to assess your knowledge of medicine
‐
a practical exam to assess your skills
‐

TUTOR SUPPORT, STUDY RESOURCES AND STUDENT-LEAD ACTION
Apart from the guidance you will receive from your teachers at their disciplines, there are teachers
with special support duties. Each year of study has a teacher appointed as their ‘support tutor’ ready
to help with various aspects of your life as a student. Names and contact information are announced at
the beginning of each academic year.
In what concerns your academic achievement, the Central Medical Library offers access to wide
resources, both in print (over 255,000 volumes) and online (Science Direct, EBSCO, Springerlink,
Oxford Journals etc.). The Library regularly updates its archives, international subscriptions and search
engines, so that students may benefit from the best quality and latest information. It is also worth
mentioning that the Library is located in a beautiful historical building and offers three reading rooms
with an appropriate atmosphere for study and cooperation.
Last but not least, many students join the Iasi Medical Students’ Society (SSMI – www.ssmi.ro).
SSMI is affiliated to the Romanian Medical Students’ Associations Federation and to the International
Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (I.F.M.S.A.). As a result, SSMI makes it possible for
medical students to cooperate internationally and benefit from internships or scholarships all over the
world. Locally, SSMI teams are involved in or coordinate many projects and actions:
‐
research and scientific event organisation (e.g. Congressis, the largest international conference
for medical students and young doctors in Romania)
‐
non-formal and informal education (trainings and workshops)
‐
community action, awareness raising and voluntary aid (e.g. work with orphanages, blood
donation campaign)
‐
cultural and socializing events etc.

GETTING AND SETTLING HERE
You may fly in to Bucharest and then to Iasi Airport taking a TAROM flight (the internal flight takes 1 hour).
You may also fly in directly from Vienna using Austrian Airlines (2 hour flight). It is also worth checking out
Carpatair, BlueAir, WizzAir, EasyJet for interesting low-cost connections with Romania. You may also take the
train from Bucharest or another destination – check www.mersultrenurilor.ro for timetables and details. It costs
~12-19 EUR and it takes about 6-7 hours to travel from the capital by train.
Once in town and until you get the hang of our public transportation system, you can travel by taxi (clearly
signalled yellow cars charging 0.40 EUR/km). The University is very central and anybody can point you in the
right direction (just ask “Universitatea de Medicina?”). Please note that, while we talk in Euros here, our
national currency is LEU / RON, so make sure you exchange some money first. There are several exchange
offices in the centre of the city.
Upon arrival, you should proceed to the International Relations Office in the main building of the University to
sort out all the issues related to your stay, curriculum and timetable. If you need help with your admission,
arrival or accommodation (student facilities), please get in touch with MIHAELA TIMOFTE.
