LITURGICAL NOTES About the Environmental Art “Icon of a Student” was the inspiration for this display. The icon was painted by Elysia Gemora, a student at WWU and part of Campus Ministry which is hosting this year’s Convention. We decided to use other images that were reflective of those in the “Jesus Movement” as defined by Presiding Bishop Michael Curry – disciples from a variety of backgrounds and ethnicities who are living the Gospel. Jesus is at the center with his arms outstretched, embracing the whole world and inviting us to service. St. Peter – Simon Peter (along with his brother Andrew) was called as the first disciple of the Jesus Movement. This image falls under Fair Use practices. Madonna- by New Mexico painter, Jerry Ingram. Opening Sentences (Isaiah 61:1-2a adapted) Officiant The spirit of the Lord God is upon us; Assembly because the Lord has anointed us. Officiant Assembly God sends us to bring good news to the oppressed, and to bind up the brokenhearted; Officiant Assembly to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the prisoners, and to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. Song of Praise We all are one in mission (Wonder, Love and Praise #778) Words: Rusty Edwards (b. 1955) Music: Nyland, Finnish folk melody; adapt. and harm. David Evans (1874-1948) Words ©Hope Publishing, Inc. Reprinted under OneLicense.net #A-706820. Harmonization ©Oxford University Press. Reprinted under OneLicense.net #A-706820. The music is in the public domain. All are seated for the reading. Reading Isaiah 40:1-11 Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins. A voice cries out: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken." A voice says, "Cry out!" And I said, "What shall I cry?" All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the 3 field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the LORD blows upon it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand forever. Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, "Here is your God!" See, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep. Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. Assembly Thanks be to God. Reflection What does the Jesus Movement mean for me? Following the reflection there is a time of silence and stillness, marked at the beginning and end by the ringing of a bell. All rise as able. Thanksgiving over the Water Bishop The Lord be with you. Assembly And also with you. Bishop Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Assembly It is right to give God thanks and praise. The bishop prays over the water and asks God that it may be a sign and reminder to us of our baptism. The assembly confirms the prayer with its Amen. Renewal of Baptismal Covenant Bishop Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil and renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? Assembly I do. Bishop Do you believe in God the Father? Assembly I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Bishop Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? Assembly I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Bishop Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? Assembly I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. After each question, the assembly responds I will, with God’s help. Bishop Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? Bishop Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? Bishop Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? Bishop Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? Bishop Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? 4 The assembly is sprinkled with water from the baptismal font as a reminder of the baptismal ministry we share and the new life offered to us by the risen Christ. During the sprinkling, the names of those in our diocese who have been baptized and who have died this past year are called out by various members of the assembly. Prayer The officiant leads us in prayer. Each petition concludes: Officiant Let us pray to our God; Assembly We ask this in Jesus' name. The officiant concludes the prayers with this collect: God our rock and our refuge: keep us safe in your care and strengthen us with your grace, that we may pray to you faithfully and love one another boldly, following the example of Jesus, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives for ever and ever. Amen. Closing Song Savior, like a shepherd lead us (The Hymnal 1982 #708) Conclusion Officiant Assembly Words: Hymns for the Young, ca. 1830, alt. Music: Sicilian Mariners, Sicilian melody, from The European Magazine and London Review, 1792. This selection is in the public domain. Let us bless the Lord. Reading Mark 12:28-34 One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that Jesus answered them well, he asked him, “Which commandment is the first of all?” Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Then the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that ‘he is one, and besides him there is no other’; and ‘to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength,’ and ‘to love one’s neighbor as oneself,’—this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” After that no one dared to ask him any question. Amen. All are seated for the readings. The Liturgy of the Word First Reading (read in Spanish) Isaiah 63:7-9 I will recount the gracious deeds of the LORD, the praiseworthy acts of the LORD, because of all that the LORD has done for us, and the great favour to the house of Israel that he has shown them according to his mercy, according to the abundance of his steadfast love. For he said, ‘Surely they are my people, children who will not deal falsely’; and he became their savior in all their distress. It was no messenger or angel but his presence that saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old. Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. Assembly Thanks be to God. 10 Psalm 133 The cantor sings the refain; all repeat. All chant the verses, repeating the refrain where noted. Refrain Chant tone How good it is when God’s people live together. How wonderful to live as one: To shape communities of caring And reveal the love we’ve known. Refrain How good it is when the ones who came before us Are honored in our present day. For all who laid a firm foundation Built of tears and joy and pain. Refrain How good it is when God’s people stand together In daily joy and daily strife, Where differences are claimed and cherished And forgiveness is our prayer. Refrain So bless us, God, and sustain us for the future To go and serve the last and least Till peace and justice ever flourish May our lives reflect your grace. Psalm Text: Psalm 133 paraphrase by ©2008, Tony Alonso, GIA Publications Inc. Reprinted under OneLicense.net #A-706820. 11 Second Reading Acts 20:28-32 Keep watch over yourselves and over all the flock, of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God that he obtained with the blood of his own Son. I know that after I have gone, savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Some even from your own group will come distorting the truth in order to entice the disciples to follow them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to warn everyone with tears. And now I commend you to God and to the message of his grace, a message that is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all who are sanctified. Reader Assembly Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. Thanks be to God. All rise as able. Hymn to Greet the Gospel Good news Words: © 1993 Howard S. Olson. DeaconThe Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Assembly Glory to you, Lord Christ. Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.’ Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary; and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the Assembly Intercessor Let us pray to our God; Assembly We ask this in Jesus' name. The presider concludes the prayers with a collect. All respond Amen. The Peace Bishop The peace of the Lord be always with you. Assembly And also with you. All greet one another in the name of the Lord. 14 The Liturgy of the Table An offering of money is collected. Please place your money in the baskets on the table. Checks may be made out to the Diocese of Olympia. The offering will go to support the missionary district of Navajoland. Earlier this year Bishop Rickel, along with other bishops from Province XIII, visited Navajoland. The bishops promised to seek ways to support this important ministry of the Episcopal Church. From before time you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being: sun, moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image, and taught us to walk in your ways. But we rebelled against you, and wandered far away; and yet, as a mother cares for her children, you would not forget us. Time and again you called us to live in the fullness of your love. And so this day we join with Saints and Angels in the chorus of praise that rings through eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as we sing: Sanctus and Benedictus (Wonder, Love and Praise #857) Music: Betty Carr Pulkingham (b. 1928) from Freedom Mass. Based on traditional African melodies. © 1989 Celebration. All Rights Reserved. Reprinted under OneLicense.net #A-706820. Glory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver us from the power of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked with favor upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son, Jesus the holy child of God. Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke bread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, and proclaimed good news to the poor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself yet we were heedless of his call to walk in love. Then, the time came for him to complete upon the cross the sacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you. On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” 17 As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave thanks to you, gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Now gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ, crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice. Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood of Christ. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made. In the fullness of time bring us, with all your saints, from every tribe and language and people and nation, to feast at the banquet prepared from the foundation of the world. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer Please pray in the language that is the most familiar to you. Reading Luke 5:1-11 Once while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!” For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.” When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him. Music: Hollingside, John Bacchus Dykes (1823-1876). This selection is in the public domain. All are seated for the reading. Reading 1 Corinthians 12:3b-13 No one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. Assembly Thanks be to God. 25 Reflection What does the Jesus Movement mean for me? Following the reflection there is a time of silence and stillness, marked at the beginning and end by the ringing of a bell. Amen. Commissioning of those Elected and Appointed The bishop invites forward all who have been elected or appointed to special ministry by the Convention. The bishop addresses the assembly on the nature of the commissioning and then questions those to be commissioned. Bishop You have been called to a ministry by this convention. Will you, as long as you are engaged in this work, perform it with diligence? Those elected and appointed I will. Bishop Will you faithfully and reverently execute the duties of your ministry to t he honor of God and the benefit of the people of the Diocese of Olympia? Those elected and appointed I will. Bishop May the Holy Spirit guide and strengthen you with courage, patience and v ision that you may do God’s will in the service of Jesus Christ our Lord. Assembly Amen. Commissioning of the Gathered Assembly The bishop then addresses the gathered assembly. Bishop Assembly Will you continue to share the Good News of Jesus Christ? We will. Bishop Will you go beyond your boundaries to search for all the places where Christ may be found? Assembly We will. Bishop Assembly Will you allow yourselves to be surprised by where Jesus appears to you? We will. The bishop commissions the Convention to continue its ministry and blesses the assembly. All respond Amen. 26 Closing Song Lord, you give the great commission Words: Jeffery Rowthorn (b. 1934) Music:Abbot’s Leigh, Cyril Vincent Taylor (1907-1991) © GIA Publications, Inc.
