What I am talking about here is the spectacular landing of the UNIFORMS team on our shores. Gazette photographer Fim Lay and I were the only punters to see this miracle; the whole team materializing from the wild waters, braving the cold winter winds and running with discipline and conviction towards the enemy… When I was a kid, during our long beach walks, my father told me about the Normandy landing, its importance, and its magnitude! I have now seen the UFM landing… That will be the story that I will legate to my son. Read more about this matchless event on Page 7... He fell in love with the brand in 1998 when his brother-in-law brought him back a pair of IV Pl@y jeans. From that time, IV Pl@y stayed on his mind and finally the opportunity came to be part of the adventure on an express visit of one day to Mauritius a year ago. He met with the IV Pl@Y family: Fareed, Ma®io, Valérie and that was it… He decided that London also needed to have “IV Pl@Y once a day!” After a extensive search, he found the perfect location for the new store on the very trendy Upper Street, opposite the iconic Bang and Olufsen showroom. When asked about what he loved most about IV Pl@y, Shaun replied: “The concept of the brand is unique and original. The designs are of high quality, funky and cool. IV Pl@y breaks the rules of tight-arse fashion: it will bring color to London’s grey skies!” Shaun is determined to make IV Pl@y see the light in London. He continues “IV Pl@y is much more than a business. It is a like a family. Whoever gets involved with the brand must first of all capture that. I love the brand: the rest will follow…” Good luck Shaun! Editorial www.bigfoto.com IV Pl@y lands in London LL SE CA E PLEA OTLIN OUR H ORE FOR M !! INFO! IV Pl@y Gazette foreign affairs D-Day IV Pl@y Lagh Hairverr The vision of this multitude of youngsters proudly wearing their latest UFM gear, gushing out of the crashing waves seemed like a dream but at the same time was so real and powerful. Marco La Rock, UFM special operations specialist, heading this A-team said that the UFM team is coming hard again to snipe the fascist regime of piracy, to spatter on the cheap copies and to impose a new world order: original gear for original people. Commander in chief La Rock is now seconded by gorgeous Lieutenant Mary-Jolie Fi (see photo), who said suavely: “We will win this war. We are better, faster and more creative. We are here to kick some arses and put some heat in your winter.” She just smirked at me and headed full force for the attack: she had those eyes that only those who are guided by the conviction of doing it right had. I was shaken and convinced! From the latest news on the front, the UFM team is now heading a multi-pronged offensive of what they see as a serious jeopardy to a free and happy world. They are confident that the new UFM team has the gear to destroy any copycat. What were their tactics? Simply to show new and fresh creations. Head strategist of the mass landing, Ma®io Guillot went overboard again with his new battalion wear: he wanted to give the team a boost, a full on look, with new colours and cuts, new vibes and a feel good force that will make the Uniform team shine even stronger. This winter, keep warm, be bold and be sexy in your latest UFM gear. war Lieutenant Mary-Jolie Fi The Battle for Freedom Zhees Twar Ltn. Mary-Jolie Fi The Battle of Normandy was fought during World War II from June 1944 between the Allied nations and the German forces occupying Western Europe. More than 63 years later, the Normandy Invasion, or D-Day, remains the largest seaborne invasion in history, involving nearly three million troops crossing the English Channel from England to Normandy in occupied France. In the end, the invasion of Normandy succeeded in its objective by the sheer force of numbers. By July 1944, some one million Allied troops, mostly American, British, and Canadian were entrenched in Normandy. During the great invasion, the Allies assembled nearly three million men and stored 16 million tons of arms, munitions and supplies in Britain. The occupation of Normandy was crucial for the Western Allies to bring the war to the western border of Germany. If the Normandy invasion had not occurred, there could conceivably have been a complete possession of northern and western Europe by the German forces. f@ir Who’s next ? IV Pl@y Gazette 23 photogr@phy Bollywood Satchin Satchin Sagar The best part in photography is that you can capture a moment in just a click and make that moment last for an eternity - it’s magical! That’s why I love shooting people in real life situations as well. My favorites are small kids – as they are not at all camera conscious and so they give you the most natural expressions. On the other hand, I’m a passionate of fashion photography as it allows me to demonstrate my creativity in terms of concept and light. How have you met with the IV Pl@y team? I met Ma®io Guillot through a friend who has been modeling for IV Pl@y for the past 2 years now. What are your thoughts on IV Pl@y, as a brand, on the people behind? IV Pl@y for me is one of the best Mauritian brands with international standards, in terms of quality, design, fit, style and creativity! As for the people behind, I must say that they are the most hard-working team of people I’ve met so far. For them, IV Pl@y is not just a line of garment. They are like a big family and IV Pl@y is their child - it’s their baby! These guys work very hard for long hours to bring more creativity and freshness to every single collection. They are just great! Explain us a bit more on your collaboration with IV Pl@y? I’ve done three photos shoots for IV Pl@y for their three main lines, i.e. Uniforms, Je@ns Architecture and Prototype. What I like about Ma®io and Valérie is that they always have a new and totally different concept for every collection. It almost goes like a story for each collection. That’s what makes the shoots excitingly interesting. Fimm Lay It is through Satchin Sagar’s eyes, that IV Pl@y’s new winter collection is expressed. We met the man and dug a bit behind the scene. Here is what he had to reveal. Where do you come from? Please give us some elements on your background etc. Well, I was born and brought up in the South of Delhi, i.e. New Delhi. I have a Degree in Commerce. I’ve also learnt photography by assisting senior photographers as well as through my own experience. I started working as an assistant photographer in an advertising agency, Rediffusion in 1996. What are your connections with Mauritius? My wife is Mauritian. So I come to Mauritius every year for holidays. I’m now planning to settle down here because Mauritius is growing fast in the field of advertising and fashion and I know that I can have a bright future here since I have many years of experience of working in a huge market like India. For how long have you been a photographer? I’ve been a photographer for the past 12 years now. How have you developed this passion for photography? I’ve always been fascinated by glamorous magazine covers and pictures since my childhood. I always knew I will have to do something related to the world of glamour because, just like my other brothers and sisters, I was not much interested in a classic academic career. It was after my graduation in Commerce though that I decided to become a fashion and advertising photographer because that was the answer to all my curiosity and eagerness to do something related to this world of fantasy... Then photography became my passion! What touches you as a photographer? What’s amazing is how expressive a picture can be without saying a single word. history Origins of IV Pl@y Arkay Hology Before there is a project, there is a plan. IV Pl@y Gazette 35 culture Girls just wanna have 1965 Cindi Lopah Project Nineteen 65 is revealing new secrets. New excavations around the site have now offered a well preserved collection for the girls out there. It was again with great difficulty and lengthy negotiations with the Department of Cultural Affairs that the rather reluctant IV Pl@y team, owners of the site where the now legendary trunk was discovered, decided to share this collection with the discerning public. Wearing those unique T-Shirts will bring you back in time: you will feel free, happy, loving and yummy… You will feel like a wild flower child of the sixties, living the sweet life in 1965! And yet you will look so, now: a hot babe in 2008!!! It has been heard in some high spheres that some of the boys out there were not so keen to see the girls get their fair share of Project Nineteen 65. Well, judging by their happy smiles, they might have changed their minds when they saw the girls wearing their Nineteen 65 T-shirts. Nineteen 65 has spread its magic once again! Project Nineteen 65 The story has it that during the mid-sixties, a design lab was said to have been located at the site where the IV Pl@y team has accidentally been doing some construction work. The reason why this Project was interrupted abruptly and was never to be heard again remains a mystery. Mention of this strange phenomenon can still be found in local newspapers archives. And now, after the discoveries, the IV PL@Y team has allowed access to the collections of the vintage T-shirts. Some lucky members of the public can be part of the legend and get the chance to keep the legacy of Project Nineteen 65 on the move. IV Pl@y Gazette 39 Niou Can you carry it? Khee Lhair In 2004, a remarkable new Danish brand launched its first collection of watches for the urbane lifestyle: Cophas was born. The name Copha is an abbreviation of Copenhagen and the Danish designed watches reflect their close relations to street and urban culture. Though the people behind the concept come from the watch industry, they did not use the regular sales and marketing channels. Actually, they take pride in doing it differently, all the way. The brand associates itself with trendsetters worldwide. Not surprising then that Danish watch brand is now linked with IV Pl@y, adding a twist of Nordic coolness to our shores. As owner Rolf Eriksen, a former member of the Danish national freestyle ski team, says: “Copha is an extra watch that you buy with a new pair of jeans. Everyone should have a couple of different watches today. We try to make watches which are really in line with the everyday life of a cool dude or girl. That is one reason that all Copha watches are suitable for swimming. We believe you never know when you end up in a pool…” Check out Copha unique collection at selected IV Pl@y stores. The oath goes like this: “I hereby declare that I, a cool dude or great babe, will not ever entertain the thought of wearing pirated and copied items. IV Pl@y Gazette 45 Cinema War flicks Hexxper Fimm IV Pl@y cinema and motion department recommends some classic and great films on the theme of war. We certainly do not prone war. On the contrary, we are for peace! But we love art, creativity and the great Uniforms costumes in those movies!!! Some films are brand new and others are more classical. We have selected our Top 5 must-see war movies. They will develop your cinematic knowledge and give you great conversation subjects. You might even appear more witty and smart! Bon cinéma. Letters from Iowo Jima (2006) This film is a real must see. Just as Clint Eastwood re-invented the Western genre with iconic Unforgiven (1992), he has signed a masterpiece with Letters from Iowo Jima. The film is the other side of the Second World War. It is about the bad guys, the criminal Japanese villain. When you watch the film, you slowly see those Japanese “monsters” as people, human beings, with fears and dreams like anyone. And all that is done in Japanese, with virtuosity, by my favorite ever gentleman director Mr. Clint Eastwood. Some trivia: Mr. Eastwood sacked an assistant that screamed on one of his sets: he insists on calmness and a Zen attitude behind the scene. He believes that the energy of a set should be focused on the film itself. And it does!!! Check out some great Uniforms. (9 stars) Hotel Rwanda (2004) Alpha Blondie is right: many of the problems of Africa is initiated and prolonged by Africans. About 14 years ago, some of the worst atrocities in the history of mankind took place in the country of Rwanda – and in an era of highspeed communication and round the clock news, the events went almost unnoticed by the rest of the world. In only three months, one million people were brutally murdered. In the face of these unspeakable actions, inspired by his love for his family, an ordinary man summons extraordinary courage to save the lives of over a thousand helpless refugees, by granting them shelter in the hotel he manages. Watch this mind-blowing film and get to know the guts of modern Africa and how complicated some issues are… Apocalypto (2006) Mel Gibson here signs another original and mind blowing film after directing scandalous masterpiece The Passion of Christ. Here, he makes us live the lives of the Indians in the Americas before the arrival of the Europeans. The photography, the plot, the acting is just great. The film explores the life in the Americas before the European settlement and it breaks away from that overused cliché of the “great” tribal life… For the finer points, the amount of digital footage shot would approximately equal 2 million feet of conventional film. No great Uniforms here! Das Boot (1984) An oldie but a great one. This film is a detailed look into the claustrophobic and terrifying world of a German U-boat crew hunting ships from undersea. Gritty, realistic and peppered with black humour, Das Boot is supposed to be one of the first movie to use a Steadicam… Words in a review cannot describe the experience of “Das Boot”. A tremendous film! Der Untergang (2004) This film gave me the shivers. It is about the last presumed hours of Hitler, narrated by the Kaiser’s personal secretary. The actor that impersonates him looks so much like him, it is eerie. This film had been condemned by some to be somewhat apologetic of Adolf Hitler. I cannot agree: the film does give a human face to a very inhumane person. We, in fact, see him not only as the ruthless military leader we know, but also as a man, a madman, with kids and a wife…Very disturbing: great cinema. Valérie L’Eveillé, IV Pl@y Image Director, and I also check that our network of distributors is well serviced and that it looks IV Pl@yed! How is it like working for IV Pl@y? Every day is different: no monotony here… There is certainly a lot of pressure. I learn a lot through working with Ma®io’s creations…And the source of his inspiration is surely a bottomless pit! How is it like working for IV Pl@y? Great vibes. A young team… However, there is also the stress of delivering to tight cut-off dates. We are always on alert mode… How do you think that you help out the IV PL@y adventure? Well I am the one that looks after all the sampling, washes, special treatments and I am proud of that. When I Iook at the jeans you are wearing, I know what it went through. I am also the link between Ma®io designs and the production line and there is no room for error here. If I stuff up the sample, well the local and export production is also screwed. How do you think that you help out the IV PL@y adventure? Well, I am the link between the voice of the shops and ears of the top management and vice versa. I hear and deal the good and the bad news! The point here is to identify the clients’ qualms and to solve them. I also regularly go to the shops to keep in touch with the team, to have a feel of the floor. I try to keep the team as one, to keep the spirits up. Your force? I can handle lots of pressure. Let us be honest here: it is not easy to work with Ma®io: he sets the standards very high. The samples must be perfect. And we have more that 100 styles per season! Your force? I am a go-getter: nothing can stop me. I also think that I am good at keeping a good positive atmosphere going… and motivating the staff in challenging times. You see, I was a IV Pl@y shop staff before I joined the management. I now know exactly what it takes to work with the customer and that helps me to help others better. Your weakness? I do forget some stuff… But I have now found the simple solution to that is to always have a notepad handy… What do you love the most about IV Pl@y? It is a young and dynamic team. And my bosses are fine people… I mean, there are not many companies that at the end of the month gather the team for a chill out session and a beer. Your weakness? I am sometimes short tempered. I am also a very shy person. I try to hide this badly, but my red cheeks always give it away! What do you love the most about IV Pl@y? The style is so original… the design, the look, the cut, I mean… It also has that friendly touch to it… And I love Ma®rio… and Valerie, a tiny bit more though!!!!
