upcoming celebration.
Notes From the Cantor
Cantor Roger B. Eisenberg
I am sitting in my office perusing
over pictures of some of my B’nai
Mitzvah students. I am estimating
that I have taught about one
thousand twelve-year-old boys and
girls over more than twenty years
of preparing kids for becoming
B’nai Mitzvah. For some of the kids
I was there for their baby naming. I have even officiated
weddings for past students. Very young siblings who sat
and/or played while their older brother or sister had
their lessons, have finished their B’nai Mitzvah as well.
There is more to come as, Thank God, the line continues!
In that line is my granddaughter, as my daughter is a
mother now with a child who will, God-willing, have her
Bat Mitzvah in about twelve-and-a-half years.
beautiful. But, the more I contemplated the question,
the more it was clear that my standard considerations
had become upended. This disruption of thought and
perception was generated by another question: Whose
life will be the most positively influenced by memories
of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah experience twenty years from
now? Who will want that “Jewish Spark” to become
ignited in their sons and daughters? So, the answer to
the question: “Who was your best student?” is “I don’t
know!” “Let’s wait and find out.”
I hope that you are enjoying a wonderful summer, filled
with time to connect and reconnect with your spouse,
your children, your family, and friends. I pray that
you are creating memories of love that will be yours
for a lifetime. In a short time Rosh Hashana and Yom
Kippur will require us to mend the broken shards in
our relationships. A hug, a smile, and an “I love you” are
among the tools for Tikkun Olam – Repair of the World.
So, let’s do it!
I am hopeful that I have imparted some meaningful
wisdom, but I have become even more reflective as
I ponder all that my students have taught me. On the
lighter side, I have learned not to contemplate a career as
a stand-up comedian. It doesn’t help that I enjoy making
a pre-teen roll her eyes upon hearing some of my lame
humor. I got to practice on my own children first. My
granddaughter has so much to look forward to!

Indeed, my students have been wonderful teachers. They
have taught me that we are all wired differently – that we
all imprint and process information differently. One may
be a better visual learner. That student may be better at
reading a Haftorah verse first, then hearing it – another
may be a stronger auditory learner: hear it first then read
it. Everyone has strengths, and everyone has challenges.
Some can readily focus while others are distractible.
Some have a good tonal ear, while others cannot match
pitch or differentiate the musical patterns of the tropes.
The amazing truth that my students have taught me is
that none of this matters. All that really matters is that
the students and their parents have partnered to garner
their strengths and to manage the challenges. They
have embraced a daunting goal, according to a fixed,
uncompromising time, when the newly-minted thirteenyear-old will stand before hundreds of family, friends,
and strangers and chant from the Torah and Haftorah
with confidence and poise.
I was once asked who my best student was. I had to
think about that for a moment. After all, I have enjoyed
working with a few kids whose Hebrew language skills
were more advanced or whose singing voices were more

Community Learning Lab
B r u c h i m
Haba’im!
Welcome
back! I hope
everyone had
a
fantastic
summer and you’re looking forward
to our new school year! We, in the
religious school, have gone through
some transitions over the summer.
First, I’d like to point out our new
name - the Beth Israel Community
Learning Lab (CLL)! This name
reflects our commitment to building
a kehilah, community. Learning
isn’t just for the students enrolled
in our program, but their families
and friends as well. Judaism has
always been an intergenerational
and communal experience and that
is something we want to highlight
in our new program. We’ll be
coming together as a whole school
community more often through
prayer and projects - families
welcome! Experiencing Judaism
is more than just learning about
it and then doing, we each need
to find the Judaism that speaks to
Rabbi Rachel Blatt, Director of Lifelong Learning
us and that involves some Jewish
experimentation, hence the “Lab”
part of our name. We’ll try out
different types of prayer, cultural
and language experiences to find
what fits each student’s learning
personality. On August 30th,
we’ll come together to create our
Experimentation Log Books and
take part in our first lab experiences
- you won’t want to miss it!
Secondly, I’d like to welcome Becca
Rosenfelt officially to our team
full-time. Becca will be serving
as our Community Learning Lab
Administrative Assistant, Youth
Director
and
Congregational
Program Coordinator. We’re excited
to have her aboard! Becca and I will
both be located in the CLL offices
and we look forward to welcoming
you!
Many things in the Community
Learning Lab may feel the same as
before. That’s okay! Change takes
time and too much change at once
might make things too confusing,
so we’re starting slow this year and
look forward to some more changes
in the future. Some important
changes for you to know now are:
-Grade Level names! The new
names match your grade level in
school (Aleph-1, Bet-2, etc) with Gan
(meaning garden) as Kindergarten.
-Hebrew by level: Starting in Kitah
Bet (2nd Grade), students will have
two teachers - a Yahadut (Judaics)
teacher and an Ivrit (Hebrew)
teacher. Hebrew will be classed by
level so that students can work at
a pace that is comfortable to them.
They might work in small groups
with Madrichim (Our hard-working
teens) or with a chevruta (study
partner) to increase reading skills
and practice new prayers.
Below are a few important dates to
keep in mind as we begin the High
Holy Day season. I look forward
to greeting each of you on August
30th at our Kickoff Event and on
September 20th at our first official
day of the Beth Israel Community
Learning Lab!
B’Shalom!

Preschool
Rachael Schwartz, Director of Early Childhood
We did it! Beth Israel Preschool is now accredited by
the Maryland State Department of Education.
Program accreditation implies that services must move beyond mere licensing and
regulatory requirements. Program accreditation standards represent the highest
quality and reflect research-based, best practices in early childhood education and
school age child care.
Children benefit from accreditation because their learning environments are exciting,
positive, and growth-oriented.

Parents benefit from this process because their children are enrolled in
stimulating learning environments that reflect the research and best practices of
the field.

Programs benefit because their services are publicly recognized as being of the
highest caliber

Local school systems benefit from this process because accredited programs
increase the chances for young children to be better prepared to enter public
school primary grades.

The state benefits from this approach because it improves the quality of life for
families living in Maryland.
This should give confidence and pride in the decision
all of our families have made to be a part of the Beth
Israel Preschool community. A huge Yasher Koach
to the preschool teachers for this magnificent
accomplishment.

Speaker: Isarela Meyerstein, psychotherapist and
author of Bridge to Healing; Finding Strength to Cope
with Illness.
Topic: A Practical Spiritual Toolbox for Coping,
Renewing Your Spirit, and Well Being
Women by nature and circumstance often tend
to nurture and care give others, while at times
neglecting themselves. This program will explore
how a practical spiritual toolbox can help women
feel more centered, engage in self-care, develop
“countermeasures” for handling stress, and attain
greater wellness for themselves and their families.
Request for membership dues will be arriving at your
homes shortly. Sisterhood is all about supporting
our synagogue, community and each other; making
friendships while enhancing personal development;
and being respected for our individuality while being a
part of a group that shares the same goals and values.
And lets not forget education, fun, entertainment, and
laughter! We would love to have you join Beth Israel’s
vibrant Sisterhood.

Brotherhood
Howard Bernheim & Ira Bormel, Co-Presidents
The Brotherhood is off to a great
start as we prepare for the 201516 upcoming year. Our goals are to
provide new quality programming,
grow our membership and “recruit”
several younger members to take
leadership roles in our organization. To that end,
over the last few months, Larry Waskow and Michael
Freilich have led the recruiting and mentoring of our
new members, and the two of us have agreed to step
up as Co-Presidents. We recently installed our new
slate of officers for the coming year.
Sports Night dinner which will be held on October
22nd. Our speaker will be Baltimore Sun columnist
and WBAL radio personality Peter Schmuck (assuming
that the Orioles are not in the World Series). Speaking
of the Orioles, we recently held our first event as a
group of 20 of us went to the O’s game on July 29.
We hope that those of you that have previously
joined the Brotherhood but have stepped back the
past several years consider rejoining. We want to
grow Brotherhood into the best Brotherhood in the
Seaboard Region.
Finally, a Mazel Tov to Michael Freilich, as he was
honored with the prestigious Ma’asim Tovim award
at the recent FJMC International Convention in Miami
Beach.
We have already met to discuss our calendar of events

We are Proud of All of Our Graduates
There is only one word that describes how it feels to be
proud of someone in your family: in Hebrew – nachat;
in Yiddish – nachas. We shep nachas at moments like
Bar/Bat Mitzvah, weddings and graduations. Leo
Rosten, in his books The Joys of Yiddish and The Joys
of Yinglish defines nachas as “the proud pleasure, the
special joy – particularly from the achievements of
a child or loved one.” There is no English word quite
like it. (Come to think of it, the next best word is also
from Yiddish – to kvell). Beth Israel Congregation joins
with its members in kvelling over the nachas that the
following graduates have brought to their families,
and the kavod they have brought on themselves:
design from Carnegie Mellon University during May
17 commencement exercises. Following graduation,
he has accepted a position with IBM in Austin, Texas.
Emily Hecht, daughter of David and Beth, graduated
on May 15th from Washington University in St. Louis
with a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy.
Chanan Rothenberg, son of Aliza & David Rothenberg,
graduated from Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School
and will be attending Towson University in the fall,
studying sports management.
Amber Rogers graduated from Cornell University
with a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental
Sustainability.
The high school graduation of Micah Kiewe, son of
Suzanne and Jerome Kiewe from Pikesville Senior
High School. He will be attending The University of
Delaware and is planning on studying Accounting.
Wendy and Scott Quartner’s daughter Jenna Singer
Sperber received her Master's degree in Education
for Curriculum & Instruction in Early Childhood
Education. Their son, Evan Joshua Quartner, graduated
from Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School.

I hope everyone is having a great
summer. Please remember to wear
your sunscreen, protect your skin,
drink lots of water, and eat healthy
foods.
I have been in the nursing profession for over 40 years
and have a wide range of nursing experience. I spent
over five years working with high risk premature
infants. I also worked in general pediatrics for many
years both inpatient and in office nursing. My most
recent experience has been in oncology. I am an OCN
certified nurse and I have been in this field for over
17 years.
It's never too late to make the
effort to live a healthier life style. Even if genetically
predisposed towards a disease, you can help postpone
the inevitable by adopting a healthier life style. In the
next issue of the Guide, I am happy to share a "30 days
to healthier living plan" if there is an interest. I want to
hear your thoughts on this and any other subjects you
would like to read about or have questions about.
I don't have specific office hours but I would be happy
to set those up if there is interest. I am always available
for private appointments. Call 443-310-8572, or 410654-0800, ext. 264.

I am available to help you surf the internet for reputable
websites and to act as an impartial professional at office
visits. I have experience interpreting complicated
test results if your health care provider doesn't have
a nurse navigator. I am a patient advocate and I feel
that being able to navigate your experience gives you
the strength to get through an illness and possibly an
incurable disease. I look forward to hearing from you

for Educational Enrichment and good wishes that
so many of you have expressed upon my retirement
as Director of Education. Your support means a lot
to me. I look forward to my new role as Director of
Education Emeritus and hope that we will continue
to see one another at Beth Israel.

If you do not want your name listed, please call us at least two
months in advance.
