Aloha Members and Friends,
Thank goodness Election Day is over and everyone can go back to a
more normal life. I hope that in the future, there will be a better way to use the
money and time spent on campaigns. For example, I once saw a group of
supporters who were picking up rubbish along the highway instead of just
standing there holding signs. That really left an impression on me.
As we saw through the election, many of the “winners” won by a close
margin. Even for those who had lopsided victories, the people that they beat out
had a large number of voters support. This indicates that there are still a lot of
unhappy people and no matter what, things will never be perfect. Many times,
decisions are not made unanimously. It just shows that we live in a diverse
community with different beliefs and values, and we are free to voice our
opinions; which I believe is a good thing.
However, we need to be able to find common ground in order to take
action and move forward. This means that each person cannot have everything
go their way. In fact, there will probably be a lot of things that don’t go our
way. We all need to give up something in order to gain something. Then we
can all be “winners.”

The Daruma-sama picnic was held on

Maui Buddhist Council News
The Maui Buddhist Council had their annual
meeting on November 5 at the Kahului Jodo Mission
to decide on the 2012 schedule for the Bon Season,
Hale Makua and Roselani Place services, and the
KNUI radio sermon.
Other news:
Makawao Hongwanji has a new minister,
Rev. Sol Kalu.
Rev. Jeffrey Daien Soga moved to Hilo
Hongwanji from Kahului Hongwanji.
Lahaina Jodo Mission celebrated their
centennial anniversary this year.

Hale Makua and Kula Hospital Visitation
The Fujinkai will be visiting residents of
Hale Makua Kahului and Wailuku on December 5
and Kula Hospital on December 6.

49th UHSSWA Conference in Hilo
The Hilo Taishoji Fujinkai will be hosting
the 49 UHSSWA Conference on April 20-21,
2013.
Although the prices for airfare to Hilo will
be considerably more expensive than going to Oahu
and there is a good chance that we will not be able
to catch a direct flight there, I encourage as many
Fujinkai members to go on this trip and attend this
wonderful conference. Non-Fujinkai members are
also invited to join us.
I personally looked forward to attending this
conference even as a child.
Please consider going on this trip and if you
are interested, please call 579-8051.

2013.

The Kyodan Meeting was held on Nov. 4.
Report on HSMA Conference was made. Dharma
Teacher Rev. Dai-En Bennage will be coming to
Hawaii to offer her services next March, but
because of our bazaar, we are unable to host her
in Maui.
Repair and Renovation Committee
Report:
Ø The kitchen repair project is almost complete
after one year of work.
Ø Nothing new about the seawall.
Ø Proposal was made to re-roof the garage.
The situation regarding the arrival of the new
minister is progressing and we are currently
gathering the documents necessary to apply for
the R-1 visa.
2013 Schedule of Events and Services was
approved. The Annual Bazaar will be held on
March 24, 2013.
We are considering the idea of consolidating the
urns in our nokotsudo of those who have no
family into one section so that we may make an
offering of flowers and prayer to them at the
Eitaikuyo Service and also open up niches for
families who wish to purchase a space in the
future.
Next meeting will be held on January 13, 2013.
In Memoriam
We express our heartfelt sympathy to the
family of the late Yukio “Butch” Watanabe, 70,
who passed away on October 7 at Maui Memorial
Medical Center for their great loss.
We pray for him and give our utmost
support to his family during this time of mourning.

One Week Period of Zazen Meditation
December 1-8, 2012 at 7am-8:20am
We will have a Shakyo writing session on
Sunday December 2, 2012 from 1 pm following
the Jodoe Service and lunch.
Shakyo is the copying or tracing of the
Buddhist scripture Hannya Shingyo or the “Heart
Sutra” that we chant regularly. Although it is a
difficult task that takes about an hour to complete,
it is a very humbling and cleansing experience.
I encourage all of you to give it a try. The
finished Hannya Shingyo sheets will be placed on
the altar during the New Year’s Blessing Service.
Rohatsu Sesshin is the one week period of
concentrated zazen meditation done in honor of the
Buddha’s Enlightenment.
Zen temples all over the world observe this
occasion. Monasteries and Zen Centers usually
conduct full retreats of all day and night zazen.
Here at Mantokuji, we will just sit for one
hour each morning at 7 am from December 1 to 8.
Please come and join me. You can come one
day, two days, or even the whole week. Chairs are
available for those who can not sit on the ground.
Beginners and experienced practitioners are
all welcome.
Please wear comfortable clothes for sitting.
We have English versions of the shakyo.
End of the Year Clean Up Day
Sunday December 16, 2012
In Japanese culture, there is a day called
“susu harai” (煤払い) or house cleaning that is
done at the end of the year. “Susu” is the dust
found in the high areas of the house where we have
a hard time reaching, and “harai” means to dust or
wipe off.
So this is a special day designated to do
cleaning and organizing that we normally don’t get
to do in our regular cleaning days.
Please come out on Sunday December 16,
2012 from 8:30 am to help with cleaning our
temple grounds and buildings before we enter the
new year.
Joya No Kane
New Year’s Blessing Service
Monday December 31, 2012 at 11:30pm
Come and join us for the Joya no Kane, the
ringing of the big temple bell 108 times on December
31, 2012 from 11:30 pm.
Following the ringing of the bell, we will have
our New Year’s Blessing Service, which will start at
midnight.
Bring your family and friends!
For those who are unable to drive at night, we
will have another New Year’s Blessing Service on
Sunday January 6, 2013 at 10:30 am.

36th Annual Bazaar to be held on March 24, 2013
The 36th Annual Mantokuji Bazaar is scheduled to be held on Sunday March 24, 2013.
We will begin collecting items for the rummage sale from the beginning of the new year. It is time to do
the end of the year housecleaning. If there are any clothes, shoes, bags, dishes, books or anything that you don’t
need any more, there might be someone else in need of it. Please bring it to Mantokuji or call to have it picked
up. We appreciate your cooperation in cleaning items before bringing it to Mantokuji.
We also would like to have donations of potted plants, vegetables, flowers and baked goods brought on
the day before or early morning of the bazaar.
Please start planting your plants, vegetables and flowers early this year!
We need volunteers! If you are able to help in any way, please contact Rev. Oyama at 579-8051.
Let us think of what we are good at, and how we can contribute to the bazaar!
It takes many hands to have a successful bazaar, please come to help!
We will hold a bazaar committee meeting on January 27 after the family service.
