Sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace, the Margaret Anna Cusack Care Center’s
caring community offers the frail and infirm elderly, persons of all faiths, and the poor, a
healing ministry based on gospel values, our Catholic heritage and our commitment to
“Peace through Justice.”
Our central belief in the sacredness of life and the dignity of each person prompts us to
promote, nurture and sustain quality of care, enabling our residents to live out their days
in comfort, compassion and peace.

We are inspired by patients who come to us, many times in severe pain, determined to
actively participate in their plan to heal. We are inspired by our health care professionals
who work tirelessly to ensure that all of our residents get the most out of their care. And we
are also inspired by you, our generous supporters who understand our mission of caring.
Many of you have been with us every step of the way and it’s your support that enables us
to continue providing vital programs and services that help all those we serve. Residents like
Rose DePaolo, whom you will read about in the coming pages, who has made great strides
here. Rose participates in programs we offer including a new arts program we instituted in
2014 to help residents discover their own creative ability. Or, Lydia Cepeda, who regularly
attends mass in our Mary Chapel and participates in an array of activities that are not only
fun, but also promote good health, well-being and physical mobility. Without the support of
our donors, we would not be able to provide these kinds of programs our residents enjoy. A
legacy of care passed down all those years ago by our Founder, Margaret Anna Cusack and
our sponsors, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace with the belief in the sacredness of all life and
the dignity of every person.
We have much to be proud of- last year, we were rated 5 stars by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
(CMS)! This accomplishment warrants salute to all of our healthcare professionals and employees for the dedication
and quality care, at every level, they give to all our residents.
However, there is still more work to do. Last year, we told you about our initiative to expand and enhance our
Therapy Department. With the success of our first floor post-acute rehabilitative care, those patients who are
transitioning from hospital to home, it is vital that we remain current and competitive in having ergonomic, state of
the art equipment. We have not lost sight of this initiative and still need your help in supporting our efforts.
We hope that after reading our 2014 Donor Impact Report, you will become or continue to be inspired by our
residents. Thank you, for sharing in our mission of service to an often forgotten population and for being a vital part
in our success. We hope you will join with us as we move forward continuing the legacy of our founders.

ince our founding by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace in 1891, we have provided care to the blind and elderly of all faiths first as St. Joseph’s Home for the Blind and
since 2002, as the Margaret Anna Cusack Care Center.

The Sister’s sponsorship and legacy of caring continues to this day. Guided by our
Catholic values, our team of highly trained professionals provides high quality shortterm medical and rehabilitative care as well as comprehensive long-term nursing
care in a safe and nurturing environment. We are committed to providing an array
of programs and services that add to the quality of life to those in our care with love,
dignity and respect.
A brief look back at 2014
We are grateful for your generous support that allows for us to continue providing quality programs and activities which ensure
our Center feels like home. Here’s a look at how your support has helped acheive these goals:
Musical Entertainment, Activities and Holiday events: Every month our residents are entertained and engaged in
a variety of exciting events or activities, including entertainment by visiting musicians, performers and school bands. Some of these
activities include holiday parties, Halloween Costume Party, celebratory dinners with family ( i.e. birthday parties, summer BBQ’s),
ice cream socials, card games, bingo, crafts, baking and so much more.
Hudson City Lions Club Visits: Continuing a long tradition of support for our Center, the Lions Club generously donated
time and resources to provide our residents with an evening of fine food and entertainment.

Blessing Tree Lighting: Thanks to you, our Blessing Tree was filled with bright
shiny stars donated by friends and family in honor or in memory of loved ones during
our Blessing Tree holiday season. More than $30,000 was raised for programs and
services for the residents at the Cusack Care Center. A huge thank you to the Rotary
Club of Jersey City for sponsoring the Lighting Ceremony. Residents, families and
friends came together to share in seasonal music and refreshments as the award
winning Dominoes Choir of St. Dominic’s Academy performed holiday favorites.

Fundraising
Annual 50/50 Raffle: One of our more popular events of the season, all 300
tickets were sold raising a total of $30,000. The winning ticket was drawn on May
14th during National Nursing Home Week. Proceeds were designated toward the
acquisition of therapeutic equipment to enhance the rehab department.
Eleventh Annual Generations Luncheon: Last September, nearly 160
family and friends joined us at Casino in the Park to celebrate “Partners in Caring”,
honoring R to L: Rita Smith, RN, DNP, Chief Nursing Officer at Jersey City Medical
Center, Michael Ricciardone and the Rotary Club of Jersey City. Hosted by our Circle
of Friends Committee, the event raised more than $70,000, with proceeds benefiting
programs and services for our residents as well as therapeutic equipment to enhance
the rehab department.

The revenue we receive for resident care and services
comes primarily from Medicare and Medicaid. However
these revenues do not allow us to provide some of the
additional services necessary for the comfort and lifeenhancing experiences of our residents. These include
our Healing Garden, parties, holiday celebrations,
entertainment – all of which were made possible by
you, our donors.

Exceeding expectation.

Providing the best care possible to nurture the mind, body and spirit is our mission. We believe that in order for the body to
be healed, the mind and spirit must also be renewed. And, we cannot say enough about how grateful we are to families who
entrust their loved ones in our care. Leaving a parent, a spouse or a relative in the care of others can be daunting and even
worrisome. Whether it be patients coming to us from the hospital requiring post-acute, rehabilitative care before transitioning
home; or residents who call Cusack home; or those with advanced dementia; or those requiring palliative care in the final days
of their lives – we understand and we are here to meet their everyday needs.
I
n 2014, Rose DePaolo fell at home and needed hip replacement surgery.
Upon discharge from the hospital, doctors informed her that she would need
rehabilitative care and recommended Cusack Care Center. At first, her daughter
and caregiver, Patricia, was apprehensive about the possibility of leaving her mother
in the care of others, but our attentive professionals were patient and thoughtful
in their approach to Rose’s care plan. When she arrived, Rose was extremely
debilitated and frail- medical professionals thought that her condition would not
improve. But after a few weeks in our Home, Rose, through our therapy program,
began to progress. She is able to walk and pull her herself out of bed with minimal
assistance, “they told us, she would never get out of bed again” Patricia states.
Currently a longterm care resident, Rose’s renewed sense of well-being has also
spilled into her everyday life. She’s active in our community and participates regularly
in her therapy program, even when she’s not in session, she and her daughter continues her therapy. She enjoys the special
holiday parties held here at the Center and she and her daughter enjoy the new arts program designed to help our residents
discover their creative ability.

Regaining independence.
W
hen we sat down with Caroline Tatarowicz, she was in good spirits;
talkative and full of life. According to her husband, Roman Tatarowicz, she’s “her old
self” again. But a few months prior, Caroline, while exercising at home, fell, hit her head,
and fainted. The pain prompted her to take medication- but otherwise felt she was
alright. However, when the couple went for Caroline’s routine check-up, her doctor
noticed she was walking irregularly and urged that she immediately go to the hospital.
Upon examination, the hospital informed Caroline that she had irritated her vertebrae
and would need rehabilitative care.
Recommended to come to Cusack, Caroline remembered that her mother was a resident and according to Caroline, had
received wonderful care while placed in our Home. Upon arrival, Caroline couldn’t walk and was unable to lift her arms and
legs. Bed bound, she was very weak and needed full assistance. Our caring professionals began a vigorous plan that would
help her regain strength by using balancing techniques for the upper and lower extremities.
A few weeks of extensive physical and occupational therapy, Caroline began rebuilding her strength participating in therapy
every day, “she was doing very well, so we wanted to keep the momentum going”, said Charles Saunders, of our Rehab
Department. And he was right- Caroline, now able to use a walker, can independantly lift herself to sit in a chair or stand and
was successfully discharged at the end of February 2015.

ᴥ We offer physical, occupational and speech therapies; IV therapy, medical and surgical recovery; pain management and wound care management.

Celebrating Longevity
T
he aging experience is unique for everyone and we are inspired by our centenarians- our residents 100 years and older, who were
gracious in letting us in on their “secrets” to longevity. Just like most of our residents, our century club residents are engaged in daily living.
At Cusack Care Center, our activities program goals are to encourage social and recreational involvement and to promote good health and
well-being. On average, our staff implements 40 activities per week for residents. And, nearly 90% of all our residents
are active participants in these programs. Our remaining 10%, who are unable to participate, are provided with
one-on-one activities. These activity programs are made possible by you, our loyal donors. Your donations in part, contribute to the purchase
of gaming equipment, entertainment, room essentials and other extra niceties that make life here enjoyable, therapeutic and feel like Home:
Anne Collins, 106
Anne is the Center’s oldest resident, but her seniority has nothing to
do with her ability to independantly get around. She is active in our
community, attending Mass in the Mary Chapel and enjoys arts &
crafts and playing bingo. Her secret: Having a strong faith in God and...
“staying active and having a positive outlook on life. I’ve been active
all my life, I had a difficult life, yes, but I always had a positive attitude”.

We know Mary well. She has received postacute rehabilitative care
here at the Center and is also a part of our respite program; where
families can place an elderly loved one with us for a short period of
time. Funny and her wits in full tact, Mary says there really is no secret,
but she has a strong faith in God, the support of her loving family and
believes working hard might have something to do with it.

In 2011, Catherine was featured in our newsletter, Inside Cusack,
about turning 100 and she was just as delightful then as she is now!
Catherine attends Mass regularly and participates in the activties here
at the Center. Her secret: “Enjoying and living life”.
Rose Carrino, 101
Rose has been in our Home almost 10 years. She has the loving
support of her son, Joseph, who visits her regularly. Very well liked,
Rose enjoys attending Mass in the Mary Chapel and participating in the
activities. Her secret is her faith in God and the support of her family.
