From the Principal rd June 23 2015 Dear Parents/Caregivers, Staff, Students and Friends of OLA The Situation In Washington , DC , at a Metro Station, on a cold January morning in 2007, this man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, approximately 2,000 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After about 3 minutes, a middle-aged man noticed that there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds, and then he hurried on to meet his schedule. About 4 minutes later: The violinist received his first dollar. A woman threw money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk. At 6 minutes: A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again. At 10 minutes: A 3-year old boy stopped, but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The child stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head the whole time. This action was repeated by several other children, but every parent - without exception - forced their children to move on quickly. At 45 minutes: The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32. After 1 hour: He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed and no one applauded. There was no recognition at all. No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before, Joshua Bell sold-out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged more than $100 each to sit and listen to him play the same music. This is a true story. Joshua Bell, playing incognito in the D.C. Metro Station, was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities. This experiment raised several questions: *In a common-place environment, at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? *If so, do we stop to appreciate it? *Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context? One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made. How many other things are we missing as we rush through life? Acknowledging the above, all the very best for the upcoming holiday period. Even if you don’t get to have a break, I hope that it least provides the opportunity to slow down and to spend some more time together as a family. Sr Maria was an original student here at OLA when the school commenced in 1950. Sr Maria was able to share her story with the children about her time here as well as her important missionary work that she is still involved in for the Presentation Sisters in PNG. Each year our community shows support for Sr Maria and the other missionaries by raising funds for Ningil in PNG. Mission Prayer Lord, our God, help us to walk with you On the pathway to the beatitudes and To live out your mission in today’s world. Bind us to all men and women of our time So that together we may bring the Good News to the ends of the earth. It is hard to believe that nearly two terms of learning has passed and we are at the half way mark of the school year. It has been a very busy six months watching the children grow (physically) and progress (in their learning). Staffing News In last week’s newsletter it was communicated to our community that a number of staff will be taking leave either before or during Term 3. In addition to this information, Deb Gorman will continue in her current role as teacher of Prep Paschal as Carol Chalk will be spending another term in Nauru; Kelly Farquhar will be th th teaching 4Paschal from 13 to 24 July while Janita Connolly is on Long Service Leave; Libby Goode will be replacing our School Officers, Shameem Manricks and Trish Gough who will be taking Long Service Leave from nd th 22 June and 13 July respectively; and Amanda Packer will be the Prep Our Lady teacher for the remainder of the year while Amanda Steer works at the Brisbane Catholic Education South Service Centre. I know that you will join with me in wishing Carol, Janita, Shameem and Trish a safe and restful time away as well as warmly welcome back Deb Gorman, Kelly Farquhar and Libby Goode, and for the very first time welcome Amanda Packer to our wonderful community. Curriculum News Portfolios will be sent home this Friday, with each student. This portfolio is a reflection of your child’s learning journey for Semester One. It will contain samples of your child’s learning as well as a copy of your child’s Written Report in a sealed envelope. If your child is away on the last day of school, his/her portfolio can be collected on the first day of Term Three. School th concludes at 3pm this Friday, 26 June. Children are reminded that the buses travelling to the venues will be leaving OLA at 8.35am sharp; children are asked to be at school no later than 8.20am and proceed straight to their classrooms to have the roll marked before meeting with their supervising teachers to get on the bus. Congratulations to Bailey Fletcher who played for the City District Hockey Team at the Regional Championships last week, great effort. Isabelle Hurree who has been selected for the Under 11 Brisbane hockey team to play in the southern cross tournament in August, well done! Climbing Last Wednesday saw our 30 Year 5/6 climbers complete the last session of our Term 2 six week indoor climbing program. A huge thank you to David and Naomi Mitchell for their assistance over the six weeks, also to former OLA students Mitchell Dart and Caroline Falconer for giving of their time and efforts in helping belay and teach our children the ropes! Congratulations to Nicola Marini and Sarah Uchytil who were both awarded our Most Outstanding Year 6 Volunteers and to Sophie Mitchell who was awarded the Most Enthusiastic participant for our Year 5’s. It is always fantastic to see the development of the children’s climbing skills and knowledge along with their own self-belief and confidence over the length of the program. Congratulations to you all for taking on and overcoming the challenges. Thanks also to the parents who came along at times and had a climb with the children, they truly appreciate you ‘having a go’ with them. Strings - - Mini Mozarts will perform at 11.50am 4| P a g e OLA Readers’ Cup 2015 The children from Years 3, 4 5 & 6 have taken part in a team/house challenge this Term. They had 5 books to read in 5 weeks, both Fiction and Non-Fiction. Last week they worked in teams to answer questions about each book in the Readers’ Cup Competition. Each class had a winning team, with all team points going towards an overall tally to find the champion reading House. The winning House for 2015 was WARRABA. Even early morning drizzle couldn’t keep our committed OLA community away from our biennial school calendar event. And I don’t know if it was the prayers, or the arrival of Father Joe, but some little carnival miracle occurred at about 10.45am last Sunday morning and the sun even managed to sneak through those clouds. Once people realized the weather was holding out, we had great numbers supporting the event. My hope is that the children had a great day. And if some of the photos are anything to go by – they did. As with any event of this magnitude, it was a case of many hands making light(er) work. Firstly, a thank you to the OLA P and F for their support of this event, particularly to our President, Sean Currin – not only for his attendance at the meetings, his physical hard work at the pull-down phase and the day that followed, but also for never saying ‘no’ to any suggestion I had (brave man). I’m sure there were times when he thought he was with the smiling assassin! And thank you to Annette Currin, who gave Geni and I some of the funniest moments of carnival day. Nadia Comaneci has nothing on those cartwheels! Megan Millman and Scott Christie ran the treasury before the carnival, during the carnival, and after the carnival like a well oiled machine. Knowing all of our accounting needs were in their safe hands was so reassuring, and they continue to be wonderful members of our school community to work with. Anne Rentoul – Facilities and Equipment Convenor Extraordinaire. One of the most time-consuming and absolutely necessary functions for the entire Carnival. Anne completed this job so effectively in 2013 her being involved in 2015 made my commitment easier to make. This is Anne’s last Carnival year at the school, and I can never thank her enough for her hard work and efforts managing this complicated task. She is just a wonderful, positive and supportive member of our community. Thank you Anne. OLA CARNIVAL NEWSLETTER CARNIVAL WRAP-UP Naomi Lock – and her band of merry helpers of Nicole Franklin, Shari Burke, Mandy Jordan and Carmen De Amicis. Even though the English language dictionary now contains over one million words, their aren’t enough superlatives to describe the stellar job Naomi and her team did with sponsorships this year. Naomi follows up people in such a charming way, I can’t believe that anyone could say no to her! And with a heart that matches her smile, such a positive influence in our working team. And boy is it a family affair. Her husband Marty, and father Graham get on board too – and we couldn’t have achieved it without their help. Tanya O’Connor – Entertainment. The only thing Tanya didn’t do towards making the entertainment program even better this year was sing and dance herself! Talk about organized. Not even a 6 weeks teaching prac could stop this dynamo from creating a wonderful run sheet, and then ensuring it all ran smoothly on the day as stage manager, assisted by Cathy Walsh. If the teaching thing doesn’t pan out Tanya, perhaps QPAC might be an option…….. Paul McGlone – you think he’s a relaxed man around town until he puts that Workplace Health and Safety Hat on! A big thank you to our own Mr McGlone for his guidance and expertise in running a safe site, both leading into the big day and on the day itself. And he even recognized when people just needed to chill and have a cuppa. He’s another one who missed his calling – give the man a microphone and he’s off! Assisted by Mr Tony Mac (although at one stage I thought Tony might be lucky to hold on to his late afternoon gig). Two jobs we couldn’t do without. Many thanks Mr McG. Peter Johnson – our on-call electrician, who could only be glad that this was his last carnival……. Talk about the patience of a saint. Peter gives of his time leading into the carnival making sure we are all up-to-date, replacing lights, testing and tagging. And he even taxi’s around people after a few drinks…… what a guy! Suzanne Colette thought I could talk a lot – until she got my newsletter notes and realized I really have a lot to say all the time! Suzanne was my publishing master, and was able to format things (and condense things) in a way I don’t even know how. A huge success in our carnival communication process. Lauren Kane – Bring Day Co-ordinator, and because clearly that wasn’t enough of a challenge, our Hot Dog Convenor (along with husband, Matthew) as well. Whilst it might seem simple to ask people to drop in a few things from time to time towards the carnival, the truth is it can be a logistical nightmare. Not that you’d know it with Lauren working on it. Fantastic success over three giant days/weeks. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. 2 OLA CARNIVAL NEWSLETTER CARNIVAL WRAP-UP Thank you to the OLA Admin team - David Cashman, Donna Jones, Paul McGlone and Tony McCartney for their assistance and support. Bronwyn McEwan, Juanita Quetcher and AnneMaree Rossi offered a level of support and assistance in the school office that was paramount to the success of the day. A big shout out to those lovely ladies. Jeni O’Brien really was the lady who set us on the right path from the very beginning with her amazing offer to create a logo for us. And she and husband, Trent, just kept giving. All of our beautiful stall and directional signs were made by them, and Trent worked so hard (sore back and all) on the day before Carnival on our set-up crew. What a team! That brings me to another amazing person – Mr Paul Aspin. Not only are we so blessed to have him as our school groundsman, making sure that our school is always presentable and safe for our children, but Paul continually amazes me as he goes far and beyond in his role. Paul works tirelessly in the month leading up to the carnival. He carries BBQ’s up for sausage sizzle every month like he’s He-man. He is our site co-ordinator from the Wednesday prior when pick up of equipment commences, right through until the day after when all of the marquees, trestles, tables etc need to be maintained and returned. And you would have to see to believe what he accomplishes on set-up Saturday and all during the Carnival Day. Nothing is ever too much trouble. A quiet achiever if ever there was one. Thanks Paul. Set-up Saturday and post-carnival pack down was helped along by Chad Vincenzi, Paul Rodda, Bill McMullen, David Anstiss, Simon Hambrecht, Graham Williams, Bill Manners, Trent O’Brien, Paul Aloisi, Michael Martin, Robert Sutherland, Steve Neesham, Trudy Porter, Tarake Kakala, Gareth Gower, Yuka McCabe, Robert Rossi, Simmone and Trevor Irvine, Cameron McMillan, Geoff Smith, Jeff Quetcher, Lou Neesham, Rebecca Jendra, Daniel Litzow as well as some other people who stayed behind to lend a hand in the rain. I’m sorry I don’t know you all by name…… To Fran Templeton, Carolin Crouch and Tracey Glyde who made sure that the tuckshop (which had been traffic central with supplies over the weekend) was ready for normal operation by Monday morning. Please accept our thanks. Once Paul and his helpers had finished set-up on what I now affectionately refer to as ‘silly Saturday’, a whole new team arrived and for 12 hours, from 6pm until 6am ensured that everything that had been put in place remained safe. I’m speaking about our ‘sleep-over site security’. And this year they were really the boys in blue. Five off-duty police officers who for the cheap price of a couple of drinks and some hot pizza on a cold, wet night kept the grounds safe and visitor-free. From bring-day contributions, cooks and bakers, craft makers, flyer distributors, and of course those who helped out on stalls on the day, a HUGE thank you. It doesn’t work without you getting on board, and we really appreciate it. If I have missed anyone, it is totally unintentional. Please accept this as my personal thanks for your contribution to the carnival. And finally – to the wonderful Genevieve Verity. OLA would not operate without her. She goes about her work, both in the tuckshop and uniform shop every week, and then backs up in a volunteer capacity making sure that the carnival, and her crazy side-kick (me!) are all kept in check! In both 2013, and this year in 2015 my job wouldn’t have worked without her. She is truly the person who deserves the greatest congratulations on the success that we enjoyed. And although it’s a huge task, we certainly have a few laughs (and maybe even a few tears) along the way. But the ride wouldn’t be the same without her……..
