POPCS Students Too Young to Vote but Educated on the
Policies and Process!
High School Debate Club & History Classes Review Presidential
Candidates' Economic Policies On Thursday, October 18th, the High School Debate Club, along with the History Department,
sponsored a debate intended for juniors and seniors in anticipation of the upcoming election.
The question discussed and debated was: Can President Obama's economic strategy improve the
current economic crisis more than that of Mitt Romney's? Positions were determined by a coin toss so
as to show students how they can also participate in a well-educated debate and polite civil discourse
regardless of their individual political persuasion.
Mr. Micah Lorenzen worked with senior Daniel Twiss to prepare arguments in defense of the policies
and economic plan of Mitt Romney. Mrs. Rebecca Weiss worked with senior Sarah Surgeoner to
defend the policies and economic plan of President
Obama. Mr. Brian Thomas, advisor to the Debate Club,
moderated the debate with assistance from judges Mrs.
Linda Isbell and Mrs. Abigail Sebesta. Following the main
arguments, teams took questions from the students and

The goal of the debate was to inform students about the
main issues of the upcoming election and to model a
formal debate for students. High school students
participate in formal classroom debates usually during
their junior or senior year in their respective history

New POPCS Middle School Student, Jenna Martin, Starts "Gifting Back" Foundation
for Children in Scottish Rite Hospital POPCS seventh grade student, Jenna Martin, is gifting and giving to others
as she shares God's blessings. Jenna has started a non-profit called JJ &
B's Gifted Gifts Foundation Inc. to bring some happiness to children during
their stay at Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas.
Jenna is 12 years old and was born with cerebral palsy. She was a micro
preemie baby born at 24 weeks weighing 1 pound 7 ounces. She has
been through a lot in 12 years including braces on her legs, walkers,
injections in both legs, many surgeries, and learning to walk. Her latest
surgery was on her right leg last year. Jenna was at Scottish Rite for 5

surgery was on her right leg last year. Jenna was at Scottish Rite for 5
days and out of school for over 8 weeks. Will." Romans 12:2
She feels blessed to have had so many people involved in her life to
help her get through some major physical disabilities. Most of her care,
from the age of 3, was from great doctors, nurses and volunteers at
Scottish Rite Hospital of Dallas. The staff at Scottish Rite took good care of her during doctor visits and
when it was necessary to have surgery for her legs. During her time at Scottish Rite Jenna always
looked forward to the "gift" cart coming by when she could take a toy or book to keep off the cart to
ease her fears of the doctor's visit. Top POPs
This year for her birthday her father asked her what she wanted as a gift. "I told him I had everything I
needed - food, shelter, and a loving family", said Jenna. "I told him I wanted to "gift" back to the children
at Scottish Rite because I know how bad it feels to be in the hospital." They began talking about setting
up a foundation to help children year round through "gifting back." And set up a foundation they did!
Jenna came up with the name, JJ & B Gifted Gifts. The letter "J" is for Jenna, the other "J" is for
Jessica (her twin that passed away 12 hours after she was born) and the "B" is for Brianna (her sister
that passed away several years ago.) Top POPs, Oct. 25:
Jenna believes that through her foundation people can provide gifts that will bring smiles to kids and
help them forget about their pain and look forward to their doctor visits. Jenna doesn't want the gifting to
be a seasonal thing. She feels people tend to give at Christmas time but she wants to give year
round. The gifting goal is to gift once a month, 12 times a year. She says if each person gives up
ONE gift they are given for their birthday, Valentine's Day, or any holiday, it's more gifts that can go
to the children at Scottish Rite.

voices of Eagle football! Ryan and Alex have
been commentators and broadcasting every
POPCS Varsity football game live through a
website called Spreaker.com.
LOOK AT OUR
Ryan and Alex are part of a new student group called POPCS Productions which officially made its
POP Stars, Oct. 22:
debut this year creating multi-camera video productions for school events. Student members of the
group can learn how to commentate for sporting events, operate a camera while hearing instructions
from a director, or be a reporter who does a pre-game show and interviews. The group has already
produced some very professional videos for Homecoming, Pink Out, and the POPCS Debate Club and
history classes presidential debate that focused on the economic policies and proposals of President
Obama and Mitt Romney. To prepare for their weekly broadcast, Ryan and Alex must compile player statistics,
talk to players throughout the week to get ideas of what's going on in life and the game, set up an hour and a half before the game, make stat sheets, plan a quick pre-game show, and then
broadcast LIVE! The students had the privelege of working with POP parent, Scott Eckensberger who has a
broadcasting degree. Mr. Eckensberger has given the boys pointers on broadcasting live as well

In addition to their involvement, Ryan and Alex through POPCS Productions, are joined by other POP
students. The elements and student roles of the broadcast that make the play by play possible include:
1. Producer - the person that directs cameras (communicates with radio headsets) and switches
between them live.
2. Graphics - Creates and times lower thirds, titles, and commercials to play when there is a timeout or
an interview. 3. Cameraman - Operates a camera. Each camera has a different role. Usually one camera catches a

wide shot of the action and the other one does specific close up shots that the producer asks them to
get. We have two cameras right now, hoping to expand to four in the future. 4. Reporter - Interviews players, fans, and anyone else we can to make the production more personal
and enjoyable for the viewer. 5. Commentators - Ryan and Alex love the game and voice a "picture" of the game over the
internet. Eagle fans who can't make the game can hear about it through the commentator's eyes. Students who have helped with the broadcast are: Brett Moore, Kaleb Warneke, Nicole Karmann,
Taylor Wedding, Zach Partin, Davis Wolf, Matt Brigadier, Jeff Yan, Samantha Calatozzo and Leah
Wright.
Senior Brett Moore designed the bumper for POPCS Productions in an advanced graphics animation
program called Adobe After Effects.
POPCS Productions' mission is to serve the student body as well as parents as they provide a record
of our school's activities. In addiiton to football, they hope to film some basketball and soccer games
this season. They also plan to request permission from the liscensing companies that distribute music
and plays to be able to film theatre, choir, and band performances. They are currently training to
produce events live.

Congratulations to the Lady Eagles Varsity Volleyball Team on their Regional Championship Win! They
are headed to San Antonio to play in the State Semifinals and hope to advance to the Finals and secure

watch! We're sure the Lady Eagles will hear the cheering from afar!

graders enjoyed a beautiful sunny day on
their annual visit to the Dallas Zoo! A great
time was had by all!

Honor Jazz Ensemble in San Marcos!
Save the Date! POP's Performing Arts Students to Present
Persephone on November 13! Everyone circle Tuesday, November 13th, on your calendar and make plans to attend the high school
performing arts department's production of Persephone by Ford Ainsworth. This one act play is a light
hearted comedy based on one of the most well-known Greek myths. The story takes place in the
underworld, where the dead have gathered for their eternal rest. Hades, the king of the underworld,
has kidnapped Persephone, goddess of life and spring. A romantic comedy, the play visualizes the
havoc that youthful innocence can create in the somber world of harsh realities. The evening will begin with a musical showcase of Broadway songs about all things Greek. Special
guests on stage will include the 3rd-5th grade creative dramatics students who have been rehearsing
with the high school performers for the past few weeks. They will present two songs from the Disney
musical Hercules.
Don't miss this one night only opportunity to support POP theatre as they prepare for the regional one
act play competition to be held November 17th at Liberty Christian School. The show will begin at 7:00
PM in the Fine Arts Center. General admission tickets will be available for $5.00 at the box-office which
will open at 6:30 PM. Reserved seats can be purchased in advance

Congratulations to Freshman Eli Mensing
and Junior Thomas Laubhan who both
earned chairs in the TPSMEA State Honor
Jazz Ensemble. Thomas (Bass Trombone)
and Eli (trumpet) will travel to San Marcos at
the end of January to participate in the State
Honor band clinic and concert. This event
hosts top musicians from the State of Texas
in Concert band, Jazz Band, Choir and
Orchestra. This year all POP High School
band students submitted recordings, and
seven qualified for adjudication at the state
level. Our high school band students have an
additional opportunity to compete at the state
level and will be submitting recordings for the
State concert band on November 16th. God's Blessings on their efforts as they
attempt this challenge. Great job Thomas

football fan - all day he watches the football
players from his classroom. At the pep rally
he was so excited to see the football players
he could hardly contain his excitement. With

team and get his picture taken with
them! Looks like Andrew is on his way to

pantry hopes to bring community
together to address problem POP fifth grader Cole Kincy got a surprise on Monday, October 28, when his dad, Michael Kincy, came
home after faithfully serving our country in Africa for the last ten months. Cole's dad surprised him at
school. It was a beautiful and touching moment for everyone! Welcome home from the POP
community!

counties in the state, but census data shows
that more than 55,000 county residents live
below the poverty line. These residents are
often faced with the unenviable task of
choosing to pay their bills or put food on their
family's table.
Volunteer Greeters Needed for Grandparents' Day
Friday, November 16! The POPCS Development Department and "Grandparents' and Special Friends' Day" Chair, Ashley
Doak, is looking for volunteers who love to make people feel welcome!
As a "Grandparents' and Special Friends' Day" Greeter, you will welcome our important guests as they
arrive, and help direct them where to go through out the event. Volunteers may choose to serve from
8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m., or 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., or both!

To help ease the burden on residents living
in poverty, dozens of food banks are located
throughout the county.
While each pantry can help individuals,
better coordination between pantries, local
governments and nonprofit organizations is
needed to truly end the hunger problem in
Collin County, experts say.
"We believe the impact of poverty is a
community problem," said Rev. Janet
Collinsworth, the executive director of Seven
Loaves food pantry at St. Andrew United
Methodist Church. "The problem in Plano
and Collin County is too big for any one
group or agency to tackle or even make a
dent in. We are going to have to work
together."

Team under the direction of Stacey Pace and myself. They served on
the midway games & activity team creating games and activities that
You "like" us, you really
would be fun for kids of all ages. We met about 6 times over the last
"like" us!
two months during their lunch hour. Lunch hour is really important to all kids so I was impressed with
their willingness to give that up. They poured their time and energy into this and were great leaders! LIKE US & FOLLOW US!! The Sosinski family was out of town at a DI retreat the day of the event which meant Taylor and Nicole
Official Facebook Page really had to step it up. They arrived at 10am on Saturday ready to go and didn't stop until 7pm that
night. They did whatever was asked of them...had beautiful servant hearts! "Like" us today on Facebook I knew Taylor had artistic talent so I asked her if she would be comfortable painting throughout the night
and join the POPCS community
and sharing the gospel through her talent. I asked if she could do something with John 15:5 and make it
conversation. School closure weather

Curt's Corner TRANSFORMED AND REFORMED

As we read and study the New Testament Epistles, it is very
apparent that there were various forces at work to mislead
people and keep them from knowing spiritual truths. This
continued throughout the years so that in the 15th century the
teachings of the church and its leaders were often in conflict
with the clear teachings of Christ. Is it any wonder then that a
young man grew up being terrified by a demanding God and
spent his early life trying to appease this angry God but
finding absolutely no peace? Through the power of God's Holy Spirit, this frightened man was led to discover the hidden Scriptures
and there in the book of Romans started to learn about a different kind of God. Wanting to learn more
and discuss his discoveries with church leaders, he developed and posted 95 statements on a church
door in Wittenberg, Germany. These statements questioned some of the prevailing teachings and
practices in the church that Luther thought were not in conformity with Holy Scripture. The Holy Spirit had blessed Martin Luther with the gift of faith and transformed his life as he read and
studied the Word. Being transformed, he felt obligated to reform various teachings and practices that
had crept into the life of the church. As we know, he was questioned, persecuted and had to flee and
hide for his own safety. While in seclusion, he translated the Bible into German so that ordinary citizens
could read and be blessed by the Holy Scriptures as he had been. One of Luther's greatest discoveries was the truth of Ephesians 2:8-9 "For by grace you are saved,
through faith and that not by yourselves;; it is the gift of God, not by works, lest any man should boast."
Even today, many religious teachers and teachings urge us to earn God's love and favor by living
exemplary lives, giving generously to church and charities, spending more time in prayer and Bible
study. These indeed are good practices and are required of transformed lives, but they do not earn or
secure God's love and favor. We are saved freely and solely by Christ's sacrifice and forgiveness
offered to us by faith through the miraculous work and blessing of the Holy Spirit. We are His
workmanship. We are "a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people that
you should show forth the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light." I
Peter 2:9. Yes, we are transformed people, called and chosen to reform our natural way of thinking, speaking and

These photos were taken by POP's High School Communication Design and Photography students. The Photo of the Week is open to any high
school student, and a weekly submission is required from each of the Communication Design and Photography students. The CDP students
evaluate their peers' work based on photo subject interest, photographic techniques used, cropping use, color, and title. The top 5 are displayed
outside the high school office. Voting is open to everyone--all ages, parents, staff, visitors, etc. The photo with the highest number of votes is the

to our campus and the night was filled with smiles, laughter and great conversation! The PTF congratulates and honors PTF Parent Volunteers, SHERRI BLOOM and SEVAN BASMADJIAN as the Volunteers of the Month. Both
ladies are such an asset to our school and we thank them for their enthusiasm and service to POPCS! Marilyn Bishop wanted to thank retired POPCS teacher, DOROTHY NOACK, for being a companion and friend to POPCS! She continues to be a
