2014 Metroplex Lutheran Schools Math Contest! The 2014 Metroplex Lutheran Schools
Math Contest was held on January 24 at
Dallas Lutheran School. POPCS was well-
represented with four amazing teams.
We are so pleased to announce that for
their respective grade levels, the fifth
grade team placed second overall. The
sixth grade team placed first overall, and
the seventh grade team placed second
overall. The eighth grade team placed first overall
in the contest. All the teams did an excellent
job representing our school!

Destination Imagination Tournament
Best Wishes to Our 6 POPCS Teams! 6 teams will be representing POPCS at the regional Destination Imagination
Tournament on March 1st at John Paul II High School. The Destination Imagination program encourages kids to have fun, take
risks, think creatively through challenges while incorporating the arts and
using STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).
Kids learn teamwork, flexibility, persistence, respect for others and their
ideas, and collaborative problem solving processes. All of this is done by the
KIDS. Team managers do assist the teams but aren't allowed to interfere with
anything. Kids solve the challenges, create all their props and costumes,
discover and invent new solutions, and find ways to work together as a team
all on their own! Teams Representing POPCS:

This was the introduction to an electronic machine that over the years has
been named Jacob's Ladder. No one knows who invented the first Jacob's

been named Jacob's Ladder. No one knows who invented the first Jacob's
Ladder, but the idea was made famous in a 1931 Frankenstein movie. Of
course, upon hearing this, the physics class just had to view the five minute
video clip of that classic horror flick.
Then came the demonstration - a display of how electric potential charges,
ionization, and current can be displayed. In the Jacob's Ladder, two long
straight wires project vertically into space, almost parallel, but getting
gradually farther apart as they rise. A spark starts at the bottom where the
wires are in closest proximity. Once a spark occurs, the air is ionized and
rapidly increases in temperature at the site of the arc, which causes the ions
to buoy upward. This rising, ionized region now makes it easier for the arc of
electricity to occur above the first, moving it upward. The process continues
until the spark climbs to the top, like it was climbing a ladder- the Jacob's
Ladder. You get quite a bit of sound for your money, too, as the arc twists and
sizzles its way up, making the wires vibrate as the arc climbs!

Design and Photography students. The CDP
students evaluate their peers' work based on
photo subject interest, photographic techniques
used, cropping use, color, and title. The top 5
are displayed outside the high school office.
Voting is open to everyone--all ages, parents,
staff, visitors, etc. The photo with the highest
number of votes is the winner for the week. The raffle ticket incentives for students have been extended so that all
tickets purchased at auction are counted towards each students' goal. The
winners of the student incentives will be announced during chapel on
Thursday, March 6th.

in the Home
In the early part of this school year, we
offered several informational meeting
opportunities for our parent community
regarding the development of responsible
technology users in the home. As our
children become more and more connected
and savvy with modern mobile devices, it is
extremely important that all parents
understand some basics on how to more
effectively develop children who use
technology responsibly both in and outside
the home. The following links briefly
summarize the key topics discussed in the meetings along with providing
links to several valuable resources to help you in the pursuit of developing
responsible technology users:

On February 8, 32 POPCS 6th through 12th grade band members went to
Group Dynamix for Team Building and Fun! Group Dynamix is the largest
indoor team building center in the United States!
The band "rocked" the ropes, conquered new heights, and worked together
to succeed! Thank you to Les Dozzo for planning this event and to Karin McIntosh,
Terry Landwehr and Lydia McMullen for bringing drinks, cookies and

Praise- Praising God for who He is, His
attributes, His name or His character.
Attribute: God is a revealer. Scripture speaks of
God as a revealer through out. His self-
revelation began with the Garden of Eden when
God would walk and talk with Adam. In Genesis
2:16-17, God begins to reveal information.
Unfortunately man chose to ignore that
information and fell into sin. Again, in Genesis
3:15, God reveals something - namely His plan
of salvation! In Genesis alone we read of God
revealing to Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and
Joseph. The revelations are not mysterious
riddles to unravel, but clear, concise
information. They reflect God as an Information
source and a careful planner who is able to

about hanging a heart shaped piece of paper on your child's door with a
different message every day. I really liked the idea, but
I did not love the execution. The example I saw had
statements like "you are smart," "you are beautiful,"
"you are good at sports," etc. On the surface those
seem like nice sentiments, but they lacked specificity and sincerity. There
was just no substance. I wanted to say wonderful, supportive things to my
children, but I wanted them to mean something. I wanted them to know how
unique and special I really feel they are. With this in mind, here is how you
do a heart note:
1) You could make a bunch of palm-sized hearts out of colored construction
paper, or you don't have to. What matters is the message not the paper. My
youngest called them heart notes because of the shape of the paper. I felt
the name was perfect because the messages came from the heart.
2) Keep the notes private. It is so easy for a
child to think that because you express love
to a sibling then somehow that love is not
available to them anymore. I've seen
enough jealousy to know that the heart note
experience could become negative if they
started comparing notes. So I told them that
they could not share, that the notes were
private and special and just for them. My
girls got it and agreed. Not once did they try
to compare.
3) Be very specific. When you are specific you are perceived as sincere. So
instead of "you are beautiful" say "I love your crazy, curly blond hair," or "I
love seeing your smile. It makes me feel happy inside."
4) Notice character qualities. Notice effort and hard work. Instead of "good
job" try "I love watching how you were trying so hard on that math worksheet. You didn't give up and then you got it! That took determination." Or try, "I
love seeing how kind you were to your friend when she was sad," or "I love
how you help me with the little things, thank you."
5) Make sure some of the messages convey unconditional, no-strings
attached love. This is the kind of thing that ALL kids need from their parents. This is the Christ-like love we all need to experience in order to flourish. My
favorite way to express it was to simply say, "I love you because you are
MINE. I am so glad God blessed my life with you." Needless to say, my girls loved the heart notes so
much that they still keep them under their pillows
in zipper bags. Every morning they would wake
up and ask, "Where is my heart note?" After they
read them, the smiles would make their faces
glow. Now, I know that Valentine's Day has
passed, but I would challenge you to not wait. You do not need an excuse to give your children a
note from the heart.

Senior Alex Thomas Receives Scholarship to
John Brown University in Arkansas for Track!
Alex Thomas signed his college running scholarship papers for
John Brown University. He will major in construction management,
and is very excited about this next stage in life!
Way to go, Alex!

Needless to say, this has been an unusual winter
for us and many people throughout the United
States. Stories that amaze and surprise us have
come from various sources. This one came from
Birmingham, Alabama.
About a month ago, a snowstorm hit the city.
According to forecasters, the day was to produce
a few flurries. Well, the flurries became a dusting
and then the dusting became a sloshy, snowy
mess which paralyzed traffic.
Looking out the window of his Chick-fil-A restaurant, owner Mark Meadows
closed up shop and sent his staff home for the day. His people gladly left
and then, sadly, came back. The roads had become so clogged with traffic
that they were unable to get home.
As a Christian, Meadows felt sorry for the folks who were confined to their
vehicles on the highway. That sympathy motivated him to fire up the
restaurant's fryers and ovens and make hundreds of Chick-fil-A sandwiches.
Then armed with the delectables, Meadows and his staff started walking
among the gridlocked cars. They offered food to everybody they could reach
and they did it for free.
There was no price gouging, no taking advantage of other people's
misfortune. Meadows and his staff simply wanted to help. Indeed, when they
were thanked for their generosity, they turned those words of gratitude
around and gave thanks to the Lord for giving them the opportunity to serve.
But free sandwiches were not the end of Meadows' snowstorm philanthropy.
Evening came and there was no respite for the motorists who had now been
stranded for over seven hours. Meadows went back to them and invited folks
to his restaurant. There they could kick back, get warm and sleep for the
night. For accommodations and the next day's breakfast, there was no
charge, a beautiful example of practicing the "Golden Rule".
Many people are amazed when they hear this story. They find it hard to
believe that when you truly get to know Jesus as your personal Savior, you
become a changed person. You and I are changed people through the
power of God's Holy Spirit. As we observe the people and situations that we
encounter each day, we too will discover the manifold opportunities where
we can serve as Christ's ambassadors with a simple smile, a kind word, a
friendly embrace, a listening ear or with a gift of love and kindness.
My prayer is that you and I may continue to be changed each day, from the
inside out, through the power of the Holy Spirit and a daily encounter with
God's Word, until we become Christlike in everything we do and say. Forward email
