Autumn 2010 Issue No 10
What a pleasure it was to welcome you all to my home
country in my first full year as President of the IGFR. I
was delighted that so many of you made the journey for
what proved to be one of IGFR’s best championships.
The added ‘sparkle’ was provided by Lanson who very generously sponsored a continuous supply of their wonderful Black
Label champagne. A big thank you to Lanson for helping to
make the week so memorable.
We were very fortunate to have had such pleasant playing
conditions. I know that I can speak on your behalf in congratulating Dominique Perrot and his team on a job well done. The
four golf courses chosen were of the highest standard and all
in excellent condition. Not only that but we were made very
welcome at all of them.
The outside functions at La Boulie golf course, Château
de Versailles, The Grand Trianon The Lido and the boat trip
along the river Seine were all delightful and really gave us all
a tremendous atmosphere a flavour.
Congratulations to all the prize winners, especially Gilbert Morisod of Switzerland who is the 2010 Carl Miller
IGFR World Champion. Looking at the final list of scores
many of you played extremely well.
This year marked the final chapter in the LEXUS company’s sponsorship of the IGFR. We are extremely indebted to them for their very generous sponsorship over the
years which began at Charlotte in 2004. We fully appreciate the effects of the global recession and the need for
companies to trim costs. The Toyota Motor Corporation
is no different from others and they too have to cut into
their budgets. So a big thank you to the Toyota Motor
Corporation for the very generous sponsorship they
have given to IGFR during the past 7 years. Hopefully, when the recession is finally over they may
be able to be persuaded to come back to us. A
very big thank you to Honorary Board Member
Masao Okazaki. It was he who negotiated the
original contract for us.
Well, we are now looking forward to the
2011 championships in Pinehurst, North
Carolina. This will the third time that Pinehurst have hosted an IGFR event and I
am sure that we will again be in for a
feast of golf next year. In the meantime I wish you all every success for 2011.

Board meeting matters
Secretary’s corner
I would like to thank board members and everyone for the warm welcome they have given me
as your new executive secretary.treasurer. Following on from the board meeting I am pleased
to announce that: Jean-Paul Ray of Switzerland
will be my assistant.
Members are respectfully reminded to let me have their full
contact details, including their email address. That is if they haven’t
done so already. As from 2011 onwards correspondence will be
made, in the main, by email only. Also please ensure you send me
your annual subscription dues as outlined in the attached leaflet.
Given the long life expectancy of IGFR members the board
is looking at ways in which we can cover our costs. It may be that
we will need to have an additional levy on life members as they
are all living too long!! A nice problem to have I suppose. Anyway
news will be announced next year.
Please note that the membership roster is now
only available online by accessing the member’s area
of the IGFR web site. If you don’t have your login details please contact me.
For those who don’t have them, my contact details are as follows:
Oscar J. Kneubuehler, Executive Secretary/Treasurer IGFR
c/o OJK Advisory & Marketing Services S.A.

Incoming President Jean-Luc Dischamp presided over his first board
meeting and many matters were discussed. Unfortunately, due to
pressure of work, immediate Past President, Fred Raschke had to send
his apologies for not attending the 47th championships.
Jean-Luc started the meeting by congratulating Gerhard Resch
on a well organised 46th championship in Kitzbühel. He then went
on to welcome everyone to France, his home country, and in particular Paris which plays host to the 47th championships.
Discussions took place regarding our future events. The 48th
championships are to held in Pinehurst North Carolina and are well
on track. We received a short presentation from representatives of
the organising committee, Lee Lenard and Wayne Kearney.
Gaston Barras then confirmed that arrangements are in hand for
the 49th championships which are to he held in Crans -sur-Sierre in
2012. Unfortunately, plans to hold the 50th championships back in
Scotland, have floundered, so, after discussion, it was agreed that
these should now be held in Italy. Romanio Motta, board member
representing Italy, will send us full details in due course.
Advance notice was then given for the following championships:
2013 - 50th - Lago di Garda, Northern Italy (mid July)
2014 - 51st - Adelaide (18th to 23rd May)
2015 - 52nd - Antalya, Turkey (April)
2016 - 53rd - Rotterdam (July)
Our new executive secretary and treasurer – Oscar Kneubuehler
then presented his report. He confirmed that while the year had been
difficult he now had his feet firmly under the table and that the last
of the IGFR monies had been transferred from the USA to Switzerland. At this juncture Steve Jansa wanted to inform everyone that he
would be standing down as assistant secretary and that a replacement would need to be found. The President thanked Steve for all
his work in the past. Oscar confirmed that he would find someone
to assist him.
Keith Howard then presented his report on the booth that he had
at the RI convention in Montreal. This was a success and it was confirmed that we should be represented in New Orleans in 2011. Millie
Mackenzie confirmed that she would organise this. She would be
seeking help from the USGFR as well as IGFR members who would
be attending the convention.
It was sad to report that this would be the last time that Lexus
would be sponsoring an IGFR event. The board were in unanimous
agreement that Lexus had done a splendid job in supporting IGFR
since 2004 in Charlotte. We hope that it will not be too long before
we have another sponsor. Christian Findt is on the lookout for suitable
sponsors.
Thanks were given to our retiring member: Ken Kinsey. The new
board member who was approved to be at the 2011 board meeting,
was: Fernando Oliveira (Portugal).

The Rotary World Golf Championships have been supported by
Lexus as the main sponsor now for over seven years. We really
appreciate your kind attention and interest in the Lexus brand year
by year. The partnership
between the IGFR and
Lexus has grown strong
and solid, the similarity
and synergy of both organizations’ missions:
The IGFR aims to develop and promote world wide friendship
in an energetic and relaxing way; to serve the community and humanity through golfing; and to promote international understanding and peace.
Lexus considers these objective as highly worthy causes, especially because they are closely aligned to Lexus’ own guiding
principles, which are to contribute to a
harmonious and sustainable development
of society and the global environment.

We exceeded our expectations
The 2010 IFGR World Championships
PARIS VERSAILLES from the 17th to 23rd July
Discover another Paris!
Well, I trust that you discovered anot her Paris. The weather was, generally, very good
with lots of warm and sunny weather. Only on the last day did we experience a little
rain. We hosted 333 participants from 33 countries. This was a major achievement given
the responses we were gett ing last year.
The opening ceremony took place at the charming 36 hole golf complex of La Boulie
and guests were welcomed by a reenactment group, a detachment of the First Empire
Grognards.
We organized a dinner at the Senate for the board and ot her dinners were held at the
various golf courses. One of the highlights of the week was the visit to the Château de
Versailles followed by a private cocktail party at the Grand Trianon. For those wh o
wanted something special we held an evening at the Lido wh ich was met with app roval
from everyone wh o went.
The gala dinner and prize giving evening was held on a boat on the river Seine. A
marvelous evening wh ich was eclipsed by the magnifi cent night view of the Eiffel tower.
We congratulate Gilbert Morisod of Switzerland wh o bec ame the new Carl Miller World
IGFR champion.
I give my personal thanks to all the members of my committee wh o worked so hard
to ensure the success of the 47th championship of IGFR. I wish the Pinehurst 2011
committee the same success.

International Convention?
If so, why not arrive a few days early and participate in the 22nd
annual USGFR tournament in Nashville, Tennessee,
held May 14-18. If not, come play in the tournament anyway!
Play at Legends at Vanderbilt and Westhaven Country Club in either a 54-hole or 36-hole
format. Included is an evening dinner show on the General Jackson paddlewheeler cruising
the Cumberland River. Tour President Andrew Jackson’s home, The Hermitage; and, of course,
you’ll want to attend the Grand Ole Opry, tour the Jack Daniels distillery and Belle Meade
Plantation. Check the web site for info: www.usgfr.com
The United States and Canada golfing fellowships merged in September 2009. The annual
tournament rotates among ten districts and follows a format comparable to IGFR. Current IGFR
members pay no extra fee to entry USGFR tournaments. To add your name to the mailing list,
e-mail USGFR Executive Secretary Millie MacKenzie at macknz@chamberscable.com.

Board member Keith Howard was responsible for organising our booth at the RI convention in Montreal. This was again a very successful venture for the IGFR. Keith was ably assisted
by Rotarians from Montreal as well as visiting
IGFR members. The opportunity of promoting
the Pinehurst championships as well as USGFR
events was not missed.
A decision has been taken to staff a booth at
the 2011 RI convention in New Orleans. Board
member, Millie Mackenzie will be responsible
for the organisation of this and she is now on the
lookout for helpers.

Dear Rotarians!
It is a pleasure to invite you to Rotary Golf European
Championship 2011 in Estonia! I am looking forward
to surprise you all with new positive experiences and
smooth organisation of the tournament.
I assure you that the organising committee of Rotary Golf European Championship 2011 will do their best that the championship
go beyond the expected routine and linger in the memories of the
participants as a unique event worth mentioning after many years.
Indeed, with the population of 1.34 million, we are among the
smallest countries in the EU. However, we have long cultural traditions and sturdy, ambitious people. We are guided by the thought
that even if we cannot be big as a population, we strive to be big in
our ideas, dreams, ambitions and actions.
Although golf is a fairly new sport everywhere in the Baltics,
the seed has fallen into a rich soil. During the last 15 years, at least
10 internationally recognised championship-type golf courses have
been built in the Baltics, which attract golf fans all around the world.
The venues for the Rotary Golf EC 2011 in Estonia are two
representative golf courses, located within half-an-hour drive from
Tallinn. Niitvälja Golf Centre (www.golfikeskus.ee/en) and Estonian Golf & Country Club (www.egcc.ee ), one of eight PGA courses
in Europe, are both high-level courses, where several international
tournaments have been held.
In 2011 Tallinn is the European capital of culture, combining a
great variety of cultural events and entertainment. The tournament
period of the Rotary Golf EC 2011 from June 27 to June 30 has
been chosen so that the guests could visit, if they wish, the concerts
(July 1-3, 2011) of the XI Estonian Youth Song and Dance Festival,
inscribed on the UNESCO list.
Further information on Tallinn’s cultural and entertainment programme can be found at (www.tallinn2011.ee )
The first signs of human settlement in Estonia are from 11 000
years ago. It is a very long time. We are looking forward to introducing to you our exotic customs, culture, virgin nature, food and
drinks, traditions, and hospitality. I hope that with your help we manage to write a new page of a successful golf tournament into the
annals of our sports history.
History is written by taking part in it!

Gaston Barras, President of the European IGFR and current board member of the IGFR and the irrepressible
driving force behind the Omega European Masters, has
received the accolade of Honorary Life Vice President
of The European Tour on the eve of this year’s tournament at Crans-sur-Sierre.
Monsieur Barras accepted his award from the Tour’s Chief Executive
George O’Grady CBE at a reception following the official Pro-Am
preceding the 64th edition of the Omega European Masters, which
has been played at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club every year since 1948.
In fact, Gaston was only eight years old when he caddied in the first tournament to be played at Crans-sur-Sierre in 1939 and has been privileged to see every tournament hosted by the club in its long and illustrious history.
Born and brought up in Crans Montana, Gaston has, for
many years, been a highly respected figure in the golfing community and a close and valued friend of The European Tour,
both prior to the formation of the Tour in 1972 and in the
39 years since the European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre became part of the newly-formed Tour’s International Schedule.
Gaston’s passion for, and commitment to, golf is unsurpassed. A
member of the golf club committee at Crans-sur-Sierre since 1954,
he has been President of the club since 1981 and has served the
sport in Switzerland with great distinction in a number of other high
ranking positions. From his first experience as a caddy in 1939, Gaston, now a member of The R&A, played in four Swiss Opens and
played off a handicap of 1 at the peak of his game. Gaston has
attended all bar one of the IGFR championships since 1963. Also a
tremendous achievement.
