TEMPLE SHOLOM OF WEST ESSEX the Inside this issue: Vol LXI From the Rabbi 2 From the President 3 Religious School 4 Sisterhood 6 Adult Ed 7 Legacy Circle 10 Calendar 14-15 Contributions 16-17 Congratulations Anniversaries . 17 17 Tishri / Heshvan 5776 Sunday, October 25, 2015 10:00 am Rabbi Groffman will introduce speaker and our former member, daughter of Lynne & Joe Epstein Jane Larkin, author of Safe Shredding Oct 13 . Congregational Dinner & Choral Shabbat Oct 28 6:00 PM October 2015 Joseph Berger retired from The New York Times in December after 31 years as a reporter, columnist and editor covering religion, education and New York’s neighborhoods, frequently writing about Israel, Yiddish and America’s Hasidim. In 2011, he was given the Peter Kihss award of the Society of Silurians, the premier journalist’s organization in New York, for his career achievement. He is the author of four books, including “The Pious Ones: The World of Hasidim and Their Battles With America,” and a memoir of his refugee upbringing, “Displaced Persons” Growing Up American after the Holocaust,” The latter book was chosen as a notable book of the year by The New York Times, which called it “an extraordinary memoir,” and was praised by Elie Wiesel as a “powerful and sweetly melancholic memoir, brilliantly written.” In addition to “The Pious Ones,” he also wrote “The World in a City: Walking the Neighborhoods of The New New York.” Continued on page 8 SAVE THE DATES Books & Bagels Oct 18 10:30 AM Number 2 Sunday October 11, 2015 2:00 pm Dr Lynne B Harrison is sponsoring speaker and author Joseph Berger Special points of interest: Pasta Dinners Wed~Oct 14 6:00 PM Tues~Oct 20 5:45 PM SHOFAR From Generation to Generation: A Story of Intermarriage & Jewish Continuity. . Interdating and intermarriage can make even the most open-minded Reform Jewish parents and grandparents anxious. It’s one thing to welcome intermarried couples into the general community, but it is another when the mixed-faith couple involves your own child or grandchild. Join us as we explore the “oys” and “joys” of being a parent or grandparent of a child in an interfaith relationship. Continued on page 8 WWW.SHOLOM.NET 2 From the Rabbi I am willing to guess that if There is an important message someone asked you to name some both in Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Jewish holidays, Shemini Atzeret would Torah: Judaism is about joy, not be the first one to come to mind. celebration, gratitude, praise and blessing. It is all too easy for us to Shemini Atzeret literally means associate Judaism with repentance and “Eighth Day of Assembly,” and refers to mourning if most of our engagement an additional festival day tacked on to with Judaism is on Yom Kippur or at the end of the seven day festival of yahrzeit time. Of course, repentance Sukkot. The sages imagine that after and mourning are vitally important. But God has the company, so to speak, of we get the most out of being Jewish so many of us in the period between when we celebrate. The Psalmist Rosh Hashanah and Sukkot, God feels captured well the Jewish spirit in these sad that God will not see us again in words: “This is the day Adonai has such numbers until Passover. So, made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” tradition created this additional festival day to lengthen the time God I hope that 5776 is a year of joy and gets to spend with us. blessing for all of us and that we expand our engagement with Judaism We also celebrate Simchat Torah on so that we feel the joy of being Jewish. this eighth day, as do Israeli Jews (Orthodox and Conservative Jews L’shanah Tovah--a good year outside of Israel observe Simchat for us all. Torah on the ninth day). Simchat Torah, “Rejoicing In The Law,” marks Rabbi Laurence W. Groffman the end of the cycle of Torah reading for the year and its beginning. We take out two Torah scrolls, read the end of Deuteronomy from one of them and the beginning of Genesis from the other. At TSWE, our Klezmer band plays joyous music, we sing and dance with the Torah scrolls and we consecrate our new Religious School students. It is a real celebration of Torah and Jewish learning. Rabbi Irving Greenberg notes that the very first Jewish holiday Soviet Jews adopted once they won their freedom was Simchat Torah. Whereas for us Simchat Torah is less well known and observed than, say, Yom Kippur, for Soviet Jews, the opportunity to rejoice in being Jewish was their highest priority. the SHOFAR Published Monthly By: TEMPLE SHOLOM OF WEST ESSEX 760 POMPTON AVENUE CEDAR GROVE, NEW JERSEY 07009 Office (973) 239-1321 Fax (973) 239-7935 Email: office@sholom.net Web Site: http://www.sholom.net Rabbi Laurence W. The Temple’s budget reflects our fiscal year that runs from July 1 to June 30. This section will outline the following key financial data: Income Year to Date $372,186.98 Expenses Year to Date $179,924.70 Net Income $192,262.28 Annual Income Budget $1,020,332.44 Annual Expense Budget $1,020,332.44 The net income is the income year to date; expenses are also year to date Currently we have financial information from July 1 to August 31, 2015, and those numbers are reflected above. You might be wondering why we have decided to share this information with the entire congregation. We believe it is crucial for everyone to understand the financial status of the Temple and the cost associated with running the Temple. Our income is primarily derived from the following categories: MEMBERSHIP DUES SCHOOL TUITION SCHOOL SUPPLIES & REG. Total $598,000.00 $86,680.00 $18,455.00 $703,135.00 The balance of our budget, approximately $317,000.00 or 31% of the budget,, must be funded through fundraising, donations and the High Holy Day Campaign. The Temple has always followed this financial model, which is necessarily imprecise since we must rely upon donations and other variable sources rather than regular and predictable income to meet our budgetary needs. The Temple’s expenses increase yearly due to cost escalations from our vendors for gas and electric, telephone, insurance, landscaping, snow plowing, and other maintenance items. Your board must be fiscally responsible to remain within budget and still provide a handsome place to worship and a rich congregational life that makes many activities possible: adult education, religious school, speakers, musical programs and spiritual support, for example. Temple Sholom of West Essex is a community. Their members rely on all of us to fulfill our obligations. When we do not satisfy our financial responsibilities, the entire Temple community is affected, jeopardizing our ability to assist people with dues relief, provide programming, maintain and improve our facility, fulfill our spiritual duties and support the level of services we all want. We ask that you be aware of the cost of running the temple, give generously to our fundraising events like our High Holy Day Campaign, and consider leaving a bequest to the Legacy Circle. Your Co-Presidents Richard Jarmel & Ed Gold 4 From the Religious School The new school year started with a lot of excitement, especially for the kindergarten through third grade students. The children came together on the first two Tuesdays to celebrate the fall holidays through art and stories and had a wonderful time learning with Rabbi Groffman. The theme for the school year was inspired by the words of the great sage Hillel: If I am only for myself, who is for me? If I am only for myself, what am I? If not now, when? We talked about how important it is to stand up for yourself and to care for other people, precepts to remember every day. They learned the names of Sukkot and its origin as a harvest celebration. In keeping with caring for other people, the children brought canned goods to give to the Human Needs food pantry in Montclair. They made edible sukkahs and decorated our own new sukkah with their creations. At the end of the day, Rabbi Groffman showed the children how to wave the etrog and lulav and we all practiced in the sanctuary. For Simhat Torah, we had a real treat. In different rooms, congregants and teachers dressed up as important people from the book of Genesis (Beresheit). In small groups the children visited these characters and learned their stories. They had encounters with Adam and Eve, as well as Noah and Abraham. In the Sanctuary, Rabbi Groffman showed our young students how the Torah is dressed and unrolled the Torah for them. Fundraising is vital to the operational needs of our Temple. We are looking to hold two major fundraisers this year - possibly even a third. The committee has been brainstorming all summer and we have some pretty exciting events planned. One of our major fundraisers this coming year will be a Tricky Tray to be held in May - location and date to be announced soon. The committee is looking for your help: Please donate or solicit items for us - gift cards/certificates from any retailer or restaurant, sporting events , memorabilia, games, housewares, electronics, services, etc. All are needed. We will also be looking for a few Big Ticket items for additional raffle-i.e. TV, Computer, IPAD, Jewelry, vacations, etc. All donations are greatly appreciated! We will also be kicking off our Who Do You Know campaign for guest speakers at our Temple. We are asking our congregants to go through your contacts, family members and friends to see if you or someone you know has a relationship with a notable person whom can speak here at Temple Sholom. Please reach out to either Judy Jarmel or Phyllis and we can discuss the details. Please volunteer to help us - we need it! If you would like to help, please contact either Judy Jarmel at 973-652-2593, email: rjdmat@aol.com or contact Phyllis in the Temple office. Thank you!! Phyllis and Judy Adult Ed-Books & Bagels Led by our member ~ Leslie Stern Sunday, October 18, 2015 10:30 AM As a child in 1913, Malka Treynovsky flees Russia for New York with her family--only to be crippled and abandoned in the streets. Taken in by a tough-loving Italian ices peddler, Malka survives. When she falls in love with Albert, they set off together across America in an ice cream truck to seek their fortune; slowly, she transforms herself into Lillian Dunkle, "The Ice Cream Queen of America"--doyenne of an empire of ice cream franchises and a celebrated television personality. Spanning 70 years, Lillian's rise--fraught with setbacks, triumphs, and tragedies--is inextricably linked to the course of American history itself, from Prohibition to the disco days of Studio 54. And when her past starts catching up with her, her world implodes spectacularly. A rich literary feast of 31 flavors (and twice that many colors, scents and sounds), Ice Cream Queen is a familiar schmatta-to-silk brocade story of immigrant New York.... Ice Cream Queen is polished yet pointed, deceptively cheery but shaded in the sinister - an upside-down, funhouse treat. In short . . . You'll lick it up."―USA Today.
