Since its foundation in 1886 with a single student, Ewha Womans University has spearheaded
many changes that have shaped the history of women’s education in Korea.
Today Ewha aspires to cultivate women leaders of
the world by providing educational opportunities for
women from around the world. Ewha’s vast alumni
network comprised of almost 200,000 graduates
will also be a great resource for international
students to draw from, before and after graduating
from Ewha, as they explore new opportunities and

• Ewha’s proud pioneers include a long series of Korea’s firsts—the country’s first woman Ph.D., medical
doctor, lawyer, CEO, Minister of Government Legislation, and Prime Minister.
• Among women lawmakers appointed to the 19th National Assembly (2012-2016), 27.6% are Ewha alumnae.
• Departments nationally ranked 1st: English Literature & Language, History, Sociology, Law, Education,
Mathematics, Physics, and Environmental Science and Engineering.
• Ewha ranked 5th among Korean universities in Chosun-QS 2010 Evaluation of Asian Universities.
• Ewha ranked 5th among Korean universities for the number of successful candidates in the National Judicial
Exam and Civil service Exam (2012).
Science Ewha
Ewha’s achievements in the field of science are recognized as milestones in Korea’s history of
women in science, beginning with the establishment of Korea’s first women’s hospital in 1887,
to the launch of the college of medicine and the college of pharmacology in the 1940s and the
world’s first engineering college for women in 1996.
• 2012Ewha named recipient of 900 million USD in research funds from the Ministry of Education, Science
and Technology and Institute for Basic Science (IBS).
• 2012Ewha ranked 1st among private Korean universities in the number of citations per research paper in
the Chosun Ilbo/QS Evaluation of Asian Universities.
• 2011Ewha becomes the first university to sign a university-industry collaboration agreement with Solvay
for the establishment of a 21.5 million USD R&D center.
• 2011Ewha ranked 1st in qualitative assessment of faculty publications in SCI journals by the Ministry of Education,
Science and Technology and Korea Institute of Science and Technology Evaluation and Planning.

Eligibility to Apply
Nationality: Female foreign nationals, provided both parents have foreign nationality.
Language Proficiency Requirement: Applicant must meet one of the following language requirements:
• Korean: TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) level 3 for undergraduate, and level 4 for transfer students or graduate
students, OR
• English: TOEFL (iBT) 80, IELTS 5.5, TEPS 550, OR
• High school diploma or Bachelor’s degree from Korean or English speaking institutions
Tuition: approximately USD 7,400 per year (as of 2012)
