Balaam’s Donkey
A Steaming Cup of Procrastination
Ambrose Talent - Transit
In my early teen years, I remember watching my older sister
peddle cd’s from her high school
locker, entitled “Deep Thoughts from Shallow Men”
and “I Guess that We’ve Grown Up”, as the manager of
what was then called Curbside Philosophy. Now known
across Calgary as Transit, Dan Bennett raps with the
same
passion
while
touring
today as he did
in high school
performing for
church
youth
groups.
Twenty-one
year old Transit,
originally from
Victoria,
British Columbia, is
a student at our
very own Ambrose
University College. You
may have seen
Transit perform
for the school at
chapel, LYC, or
Christmas Banquet; but he has also performed at “Much
Music Discovered Season 3” and opened for artists such
as Maestro.
Released this past September, Transit‘s newest album Insufficient Funds is about “changing the scene”.
Contents:
Transit explains that many of the songs are about
breaking the preconceived notions of Calgarians as
2
“uncultured cowboys” and are written for “the artis- Music tic subculture that is emerging” in the city. The theme
Entertainment 3
of “revolting against the status quo” can also be seen
in songs that seek to change the way people view Confessions, Story 4
hiphop music. The reoccurring message throughout the album Demographics 5
is that real
Chewin’ the Fat 6
hiphop is not
music
made Athletics, Coming
by self-glorify 7
ing gangsters Events about
irrelCrossword,
evant subjects
in order to get Quotable Quotes 8
their songs on
the radio.
Currently
in his fourth
year in the
Behavioural Science program at
Ambrose,
Dan
Bennett aspires
to use his degree
to become a youth
worker. In his practicum at Boys and Girls Club, he is
combining his passion for music and for youth by teaching teenagers to rap and produce their own albums.

Editor’s Tid-Bit
Salutations! You may notice the slightly
different look of the paper this month.
This is not because I had copious
amounts of spare time and felt like redesigning it (I most certainly did not).
Unfortunately I lost my USB key that
had the past issues on it, so I had to start
this issue from a blank screen of white;
somewhat like the blanket of white outside, both are disheartening. But I am
cheered by several facts: the amazing
crossword puzzle on the back page that
was made from scratch by three Ambrose students, we have an article written by a guest interviewer from Seattle,
and at long last there are no pickles in
the Beef Stroganoff.
We’ve got coverage of Ambrose happenings and some will-be happenings. And
on page 5 there are some exclusive charts
and graphs from the Registrar’s office with
statistics about the demographics of the Ambrose Student body. All in all this paper is a
great way to procrastinate on writing your
big research paper (if you insist on procrastinating that is)! I mentioned last month that
this newspaper is a difficult feat to pull off
each month so I am looking for some assistance. Also, keep the contributions coming!
Take some ideas from this issue: you can
send in song suggestions, web links, or announcements relevant to our school. I know
the semester is getting tough, but let me
offer some cheesey encouragement: In the
midst of your flailing and thinking you’re
failing, remember you WILL get through this.
Look to the Light and you’ll be alright.

load Insufficient Funds off of itunes. Also look for
his new music video, “Your Love is a Placebo” at

And if you are interested in hearing Transit live

When it comes to describing Transit as an
artist, his first track on Insufficient Funds seems
to summarize his mission: “I’m here to change
the scene. I’m here to praise my King. I’m here to

Swing Dancing - An Interview
Viva la Musica!
“Music produces a kind of pleasure which
human nature cannot do without.”
-Confucius
So after recuperating from midterms and
now being at the halfway mark for finals I
figured we could all use a little more upbeat
musical motivation. If you have a great song
that you're burning and yearning to be made
known to the masses, email me (Erin Case) at:

This month’s hymn choice is such a great
reminder- that no matter how defeated we’re
feeling in certain aspects of our lives we have
victory in our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
The victory we have from being made new in
Him can help us plow through anything!
Devoted readers of this fine newspaper
are no doubt already familiar with Joshua Aitkenhead, the VP of Spiritual Life for Ambrose
Student Council. But in addition to his heart
for the Lord and desire to see others grow in
faith, Joshua also has a passion for spreading
joy through swing dancing, and I had the privilege of hearing about how he hopes to share
all three with the Ambrose community. But
what is swing dancing?
Traditionally done in rotating pairs, swing
is a social dance. Rather than being itself a
type of dance, swing combines many dances
from the 1920s through to the 1940s such
as the Lindy hop, the Charleston, Blues, Balboa and Jazz dancing. While the dancers are
required to hold hands, swing is comparably
low contact, using open formation, as opposed to the closed formation of other more
traditional social dances. The eclectic nature
of the dance, the simple core step, and the
steady backbeat of the music allow for significant freedom and creativity, as well as being
forgiving to people who are still learning.

“Victory In Jesus”
I heard an old, old story,
How a Savior came from glory,
How He gave His life on Calvary
To save a wretch like me;
I heard about His groaning,
Of His precious blood’s atoning,
Then I repented of my sins
And won the victory.
Chorus
O victory in Jesus,
My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood;
Playlist of the Month
On the subject of bringing faith into music,
Transit explains that it is not necessarily a conscious decision to combine the two. Instead, his
Christian beliefs naturally come out in his lyrics
because they are a part of who he is: “As a Christian I don’t feel I purposefully integrate faith
into my music. Music is an expression of self and
when I express myself entirely, I can’t help but
talk about Jesus.”

Swing Dancing - cont’d
...cont’d from previous page
After declining in popularity
through the 1960s, swing, or
neo-swing, made a comeback in
urban centers in the late 1990s
and seems to once again be here
to stay. Calgary is no exception,
and swing has also caught the
interest of some Ambrose students, Joshua in particular.
Kelsey: “How long have you been dancing, and
what made you decide to start? ”
Joshua: “Well, I went to my first actual swing
dance event last November and started taking
lessons at the UofC in January. I’ve wanted to
do swing dancing since my freshman year, but
I never had anyone to go with; last year a good
friend told me about this (Swing Dance Calgary) and invited me along, so I went.”
Kelsey: “Why swing?”
Joshua: “It just looked fun. Besides I do like to
suit up and swing dance encourages that! Also
a lot of other types of dances were just too intimate.”
Kelsey: “I have heard you are hoping to start
up a Swing Dance club at Ambrose, what do you
envision for this potential club, and why have
one here?”
Joshua: “Well, first off, I want to spread the love
of dance to the students of Ambrose.
Freshmen Movie Event
On Sunday, November 7, freshmen (and
some non-freshmen) were treated to Toy Story
3 as a drive-in movie, broadcasted on the outside wall of the Ambrose gym. A movie has
never been shown like this as an official event
Dancing is not only a
great way to socialize and
work out, but also a great
way to have fun without
spending a lot of money.
Secondly, I want to have
people see that dancing
can be done as worship
and can teach us about
our relationship with
God. I long for the days
when God will lead me perfectly in a wonderful
dance where I can show off His majesty without
taking away what He has made me to be. Ask
me how I feel when I dance.”
Kelsey: “Um...Joshua, how do you feel when
you dance?”
Joshua: “I feel like I am living out a beautiful
existence. I feel like I am doing something for
the woman I am dancing with in that when I
execute a move she ends up looking great and
I am overwhelmed by the smile that appears on
her face. Because it means that whatever is going on right now in her life, she is happy in that
moment, and whatever is going on in my life, I
am happy that I brought joy to someone else!”
Kelsey: “I see. Could you give me some hypothetical logistics for what this club would look
like?”
Joshua: “I hope that the club will meet in the
gym for about two hours a week. One hour will
here before, but we
have Nathan Hildenbrandt and his team
to thank for changing
that. Drive-in movies were all the rage
back in the day, but
now our generation
has theatres with
comfortable seats (if
you’re lucky), surround sound, and all
that other technology.
It was a nice throwback to simpler days
to be able to watch
the movie in this way.
In order to make it possible, they rented an FM
transmitter so that each car could tune into the
radio and hear the sounds of the movie while
be a lesson time and the next a dance to try out
the moves that were learned.
Kelsey: “People not taking lessons, but interested in dancing, could they show up for only
the dance time?”
Joshua: “Yes. For sure.”
Kelsey: “Why should students care about this
group?”
Joshua: “Why? Students should care for a
couple reasons: One, not all of us can sing and
yet music is prevalent in our worship services.
Sometimes I just dance in order to worship in a
service (or at least bob up and down). Secondly,
dancing is one of the things that are mentioned
in the Bible as being a legit worship experience,
but Christians often seem to say it’s wrong. I believe Jesus wants to redeem dancing to what it
was supposed to be! And most importantly, it’s
a lot of fun!”
If you have any questions, concerns, or snide
comments about the proposed club, you can
talk to Joshua or email him at jaitkenhead@
my.ambrose.edu. Swing Dance Calgary currently hosts a weekly dance lesson and open dance
time on Friday nights called “The A-Train”; details and other events can be found at swingdancecalgary.com. Watch for details about the
upcoming drop-in lesson and informational
meeting in 2011!

sheltered from the cold. Apparently, lucky listeners in the Southwest were even treated to an
unofficial radio show the night before. There
was an excellent turn out and probably some
cramped quarters, but it was definitely an enjoyable evening with the added bonus of free
snacks and drinks provided by the organizers.
I personally thought it was cool that although it
was technically a freshmen event, upperclassmen were allowed to come too. It was nice just
to hang out and take a break from school stresses. Spencer Young says of the night, “It was delectable.” An anonymous student said that they
were impressed with all of Nathan’s work and
creativity with this event. In the words of Nathan, he’d “like to thank everyone who made
this possible.” Also a special shout out to the
people who specifically helped Nathan with
this event: Jason Jespersen, Paul Stalder, Ian
Strom, and Kris Hanson.

Confessions of an Extrovert
So I’ve been meaning to write something for the paper
since last year, but every time the deadline for an article
comes up I’m stumped on what to write about. Finally, I
have something to talk about…
What does it mean to be an extrovert? For starters its
basic definition is: a person who is energized by people
rather than being alone; a person who for the most part
can think through things while talking, and overall seeks
out the opportunity to be with other people.
As a self-confessed extrovert, these things pretty
much define the kind of person I am and are really some
of my greatest strengths. The unfortunate side of this is
these are also some of my biggest weaknesses. In my attempts to be around people all the time I tend to find myself in two kinds of pickles--no not kosher and Vlasic.
The first of these pickles is my Academic life, I get so
worried that I’m going to miss out on something awesome
that I leave my homework to the last minute. The funny
thing is I’m not really lazy, I just don’t do my homework
sometimes because I feel that there are better ways to
spend my time (Yes I know its like 40 bucks each class,
and 891 or something like that for the whole deal, YIKES!).
Once I’m sitting down and working on something I usually get’r done pretty fast and without trouble, although
often too late for much editing or deep thought. This is a
problem I have had my entire life as an extrovert; even in
pre-school I’d cut and colour as fast as possible so I could
go play {insert random awesome childhood game}…Nine
months in the womb was waaay too much time to myself.
The second Pickle is more serious; my time alone
with God is definitely something that gets pushed
on the back burner occasionally when I feel like
I’m able to handle things. I thank God that this
is happening less and less as I get older because when I fall down from a stint of “ignoring God” I usually hit hard enough for
everyone to hear. I end up crushed and
defeated, which really is a good thing in
the end because I realize that no amount
of people can satisfy my absolute longing for
relationship with Jesus. Even as an extrovert
there is only one thing that can completely fill me,
and keep filling me…and that is Jesus.
Recently I wrote a note on Facebook and I think
this is a good sum up of what I mean:
…But with God, he looks way deeper, he sees the
broken heart, he sees my desire to be known by
him more, he sees my absolute loneliness and he
also knows that He is the only one to fill that
void. Well my friends, these are the confessions of an extroverted guy who sometimes
needs to be a little introverted (for those who
don’t know…that’s the opposite of extroverted)
Thanks for reading, and remember…
Don’t sweat the petty things…and don’t
pet the sweaty things…

The Wall - Part Two by Andrew Love
It took at least five seconds for me to register
what this strange man was saying, and even then I
didn’t understand what he was talking about. All
I wanted was to fall into a much-needed sleep. Or
wake up, I couldn’t tell whether or not I was actually dreaming. But he tugged on my arm. “Come on!
There’s no time!”
“Just leave me alone,” I tried to say, but it came out
extremely slurred.
I was literally thrown out of my bed. Thanks to
the resulting sharp pain in my head, all of my prospects for getting a good night’s sleep were thrown
out the window. “What was that for?”
“Get dressed and get out. Leave everything else
here,” he said, ignoring my question.
“You almost sound like you’re holding me at gunpoint,” I snidely remarked.
“You’re in danger. If you wait any longer, it’ll be
too late.”
It was obvious that this man wouldn’t leave me
alone, so I slipped into some track pants and my favourite sweater. Then I ran downstairs and slapped
on my ski jacket, a wool hat, gloves, and snow boots,
before following the strange man out the door.
Almost instinctively, I looked at the wall. They
were still hard at work, laying down brick by brick.
I looked at my watch. 3:56 AM. Talk about overtime
pay.
…Wait, wasn’t it midnight just a few minutes ago?
He looked in the direction of the wall, then turned
to me and said, “It’s almost too late. This way!”
“Wait, does it have to do with the–”
“There’s no time to explain! This way!”
He grabbed me by the sleeve and pulled me in the
opposite direction. “We’ll have to go around it.”
Now in better light, I took a good look at the guy
that was dragging me. He was fairly tall, with red
hair, close-cut, with a full goatee, wearing a hoodie
and jeans. I caught the glint of a glowing wristband.
He seemed like a normal person except for the eyes.
They were lime green with no pupils.
“Who are…?” I tried to ask.
“I’m not exactly human. But that’s not important
right now.” He dashed around a corner. “We’re almost
there.”
We were back on my street, only on the other side
of the wall. The builders were still laying down brick
after brick, no different than the past few weeks. It
was obviously far from finished.
My rescuer/captor/whatever he was wiped
his brow. “That was a close one. Any slower and it
would’ve been too late.”
That’s when I noticed that the bricks were now a
deep shade of blue.

… with Sam Lam
“I put the ‘fat’ in ‘fantastic’.”
Let’s just cut through the potatoes (haha...
get it? Cause there’s a lot of potatoes?) and get
straight to the point. The beef stroganoff and I
have a deep history with each other. Here are
some excerpts of what I’ve said about the beef
stroganoff in the past:
As I was eating it, I put a piece of beef in my
mouth and this piece of beef had a really weird
taste and texture and I said aloud to the people
I was sitting with at my table, “Hmm... this piece
of beef is really weird... wait... IT’S A PICKLE!!!”
– served 18 November 2009, written
for December 2009
issue
So I got it, sat
down . . . wrapped
a noodle around my
plastic fork, stabbed
a piece of beef at the end to anchor the whole
thing, put the thing in my mouth... and just
like the face you make when you realize that
you’re eating your pet hamster, I just sat there
in shock. Why? It was because of the pickles. .
. . This time, the sauce actually tasted like the
pickle BRINE. . . . – served 21 January 2010,
January 2010 issue
As much as I didn’t want to eat it anymore,
I thought to myself that I did pay a fair bit for
it and I should probably eat the rest of it to get
my money’s worth. – written in summary for
January 2010 issue
So one day I walk into the caf and instead
of my usual of stopping and standing there in
disbelief because there’s a mound of mash potatoes being served AGAIN, I saw this:
IT WAS LIKE MANNA FROM HEAVEN!!! You
know, the manna that fed you... not the... you
know... manna for magic attacks... *cough*...
ANYWAYS, without further adieu...

What you really ate: Umm... well uhh... not
sure but it wasn’t that bad actually
Comments: So the first time I wrote about
the “Oriental Flare” (you know, the one that
didn’t say you were having ginger beef), I received a mixed reaction towards it. This time—
and I’m being serious when I say this—it
was actually fairly decent. I’ve never actually
liked the noodles so I got a double serving of
rice **note: the picture I took of the dish was
someone else’s plate**. Usually the rice is terrible but instead of the usual horse feed, this
time they used a different kind of rice that was
quite decent. Honestly, that’s where it has to
start: good rice makes any side dish good. The
mixed veg was... well, mixed veg. The boneless pork ribs were great since... well you
can’t really mess up boneless pork ribs right?
RIGHT?! So yeah, it was good. However, I did
experience a fairly significant bout of flatulence afterwards. At my practicum. Good times.

What you really ate: I have no idea how to

Durian.
Pig foot.

Oysters,

But there is absolutely one thing that I ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT EVER TRY. This thing that
I won’t try is so revolting and disgusting that I
ABSOLUTELY REFUSE to consume it. I’m pretty
sure it should be obvious to all of you that I am
obviously talking about the most vile thing in
the world: eggnog. Eggnog is disgusting, people. Liver is actually pretty good. It contains a
lot of good vitamins
and minerals and is
considered a super
food. It does depend
on how you prepare
it though. For example, if it’s in a soup,
it tends to come out very spongy and... spongy.
Or you could go right at it and eat it raw after
a successful hunting trip (you can actually eat
meat raw fresh off an animal because there
is no bacteria on it). So this liver in particular
was decent and was really like a dry, well-done
steak that tasted pasty. But since I knew it was
liver and not, say, a cut of succulent prime rib
done medium rare, it was an acceptable pastiness. This has never been served before in the
caf. So it was good. If you like liver, that is.

The past month has seen a fair amount of
sports start up at Ambrose as both Futsal and
Basketball began meeting. Our women’s Futsal
team has been having tryouts for the past few
weeks and the team is looking solid once again.
Despite the large turnover from last year’s team
Karlie Silcock, a 4 year veteran, said that team
chemistry is already looking good. On the men’s
side, Monday night ‘kick arounds’ have transitioned into team tryouts, with about 15 players
coming out. Phil Seutter (reigning Male Athlete
of the Year) says, “I’m excited for the chance to
play ACAC teams, a few teams have shown interest in playing us and I look forward to seeing
how we match up with this higher level of play.”
In men’s basketball news Wednesday night
scrimmages led to two scrimmages with an Edmonton High School, and Saint Mary’s University College. This was a solid time for our boys to
come together and see how the team will look
come the regular season. News on the women’s
team is upcoming.
With only one win on the season so far our
men’s hockey team has not lost its drive. Team
morale is still high with the last two games resulting in close losses. In the past few games
TJ Smith and Tyson McCombs have put on a
scoring clinic; as some notable freshmen, Nick
Thomas and Rory Jipp, have provided secondary scoring. Come out this Monday at 10:45pm
and cheer on our Boys as they take on the Buds.
The Volleyball season concludes this weekend with our men going in as the top seed, and
our women in third. This past month has seen
some great action with hard fought battles on
both the men’s and women’s sides. Games of the
Month went to our Women’s and Men’s Volleyball team’s as they hosted Prairie. Our women
started off the night with a statement, easily defeating a strong Pilots side. With their first and
only loss fresh in their minds our men looked
for redemption, and earned it in convincing
fashion. Players of note: Cheyanne Hinkley and
Helena Kempler of our Ambrose Lions are two
of the top
five leaders
in
kills for
the ACAL.
Following
suit, Dan
Prasad,
S c o t t
Willms
and Dan
Reid also
ro u n d
out three
of
the
top five
leaders
in league
kills.
Check
our athletic board, or the ACAL website for information on the Volleyball finals this weekend
in Olds. See you out there.
