As time passes and seasons change, lives grow and thrive in cycles to achieve continuity. That seems to suggest that the heart of sustainability lies in the ability to adapt and to change. The old Chinese wisdom described this observation as follows: "the Sun and the Moon follows the Tao of Nature; thus can their shining be long lasting. The seasons of the Earth keeps on changing; thus can its ability to nurture long endure". Such a seemingly philosophical moral actually resonates well with Delta’s corporate culture of "innovation" and its value in pursuing "sustainability". At the annual “Taiwan Lantern Festival” in late February, Delta’s belief of pursuing sustainability will be illustrated by its system solution of advanced projection technology. In the event Delta Group will present a spectacular outdoor circular projection installment, the biggest of its kind, "Ring of Celestial Bliss". It is a joint effort by the Delta Electronics Foundation, Brand Management Office, Corporate Communications Department, DSBU and SLBU. The team produced the first circular video incorporating Delta’s branding message and corporate values. The video will be projected on the 10-meter-tall, 70-meter-wide installation, called “Ring of Celestial Bliss”, demonstrating Delta's capabilities in display solutions and LED lighting. The installation is expected to attract large domestic and international media attentions. It is a great brand building initiative and an efficient vehicle to broadcast our branding messages. For more details and first-hand report, please check out the Brand Circle in this issue. The new column, "Brand People", aims to feature in-depth interviews with regional managers. We aims to concentrate on their precious front-line experiences that could enhance resource sharing, nurture effective crossfunctional communication, and thus generate synergy within the Delta group. Its debut in this issue will have General Manager of Delta GreenTech, Mr. Donald Yu, to talk about the development and transformation of Delta GreenTech in China. Speaking of "quality", most people conjure up the quality of products; however, "quality" means more than that. In this issue, the special report features "quality" as examined in the 13th "Quality Diagnosis Meeting" held in Dongguan, China, last December, and will elaborate on the relation between quality and brand, as well as how Delta implements its quality control step by step under the goal of quality management. Beginning from this issue, the Delta Brand News Bi-Monthly will have a new cover and layout. We hope the new design issue will bring refreshing reading experiences for all of you. For example, the column "Delta Kaleidoscope" is renamed as "Delta Green Life", which will share information on products and services close to our daily life. Late last year, Brand News conducted an employee survey about their responses to our content. We appreciate your enthusiastic feedbacks and invaluable suggestions. From the survey, readers express great interest in articles about "successful stories", "introduction on consumer electronics application", and "news of management team". This preference indeed fits the direction of Delta's business transformation and brand building we want to focus on. We will keep our efforts to bring you fascinating stories and an ever-exciting Brand News! Shan-Shan Guo, Brand Management Office Brand News 01 Special Report Exceeding quality benchmarks, and creating a stronger brand together In December 2012, Delta hosted its 13th "Quality Diagnosis Meeting" in Dongguan, China. With slide presentations and on-the-spot diagnosis, comprehensive methods were adopted to examine tangible achievements of quality improvement projects in the Dongguan area over the past year. In the past six issues, the cover stories of the Delta Brand Bi-monthly have mostly focused on brand positioning and promotion. In this issue, however, we have decided to cover "quality" instead, sharing how quality interacts with Delta Brand and how Delta has dedicated itself to meeting the expectations of quality management and step-by-step implementation. Quality diagnosis and presentation The 13th Delta Quality Diagnosis Meeting The 13th Delta Quality Diagnosis Meeting took place in Dongguan last December and was a great success. Participating in the event were Mr. Bruce Cheng, Mr. Yancey Hai, Mr. Mark Ko, Mr. Ping Cheng, Mr. Johnson Lee as well as staff from Delta corporate, business units, and factory executives. During the three-day sessions, executives examined specific achievements and improvement projects at Dongguan manufacture sites over the past year. Executives and colleagues from Dongguan plants demonstrated their achievements and projects. The impressive results of the projects were widely recognized and the grassroots efforts of the front-line team leaders to integrate quality and productivity also received praise. What is "quality"? There are two layers of "quality". First, the meaning of good quality refers to customer satisfaction with product functions, performance, delivery and cost-efficiency. However, a more advanced definition of quality refers to thinking a step ahead of customers, setting trends and exceeding their expectations. On quality, we often hear about "quality management" and "quality control". To put it simply, quality management comes from the company’s founder or management team who establish the guidelines for quality within the company. Then, with multi-dimensional "quality control", quality can be improved and sustained. For manufacturers there are five dimensions of quality: planning, design, material, production, and service. Each dimension covers precise processes and steps to achieve good quality, and it takes sound "management" to meet client requests. Brand News 02 Special Report Since the 1980s, W. Edwards Deming, a renowned American management guru, has proposed the PDCA Cycle to manage quality, a method that has been widely applied—for PDCA, P stands for Plan, D for Do, C for Check and A for Act. At Delta systematic planning is introduced into the cycle to establish a preventive prediction mechanism for structural improvement. Quality control is a method to produce goods that meet clients' needs. It is not just control; it also covers multilevel improvement, and that's why Delta hosts quality diagnosis meetings, which aim to identify problems on the journey to perfection. Quality and Brand "If there is no quality, there can be no brand," according to many scholars and experts. For a brand, stakeholders include end-users, shareholders, employees, and society. Their separate quality benchmarks are: 1) End-user: customer satisfaction 2) Shareholder: ROE (Return on Equity) 3) Employees: Corporate spirit and employee satisfaction 4) Society: Corporate social Responsibility and corporate image Basic elements of branded business include product design, technology R&D, product manufacturing, brand definition, marketing, channel management and services. Quality plays important roles in each and every category. Mr. Ping Cheng, CEO of Delta Group, points out that "as operation costs continue to rise, companies are confronted with various challenges. However, thanks to collective efforts from all colleagues, improvement projects such as in automation and rationalized production are launched, increasing the competitiveness of the company. Meanwhile, we should dig into product design, optimize the process, and elevate product quality." 1 Good brands aim to create higher ROE for shareholders and elevate the corporate spirit as well as employee satisfaction. For society, corporate social responsibility can be carried out through the efforts of the company or a related foundation. Assess, improve, and pursue perfection It was about in 2005 that Delta initiated the quality diagnosis meetings. Inter-plant, on the spot observation helps to identify problems and find solutions. Learning from one another and exchanging ideas enables seamless communication among plants and BG/ BU. Identifying better business models also supports the goal of enhancing quality. 2 1︱ Mr. Bruce Cheng (1st left), Mr. Yancey Hai (2nd left), Mr. Daryl Liao (4th left) , JJ Chang (5th left) and other managers attend the quality diagnosis 2︱ Mr. Johnson Lee supervises the diagnosis on the spot Why 'diagnosis'? Mr. Ping Cheng explains that he hopes to discover issues and think about ways to improve through teamwork. The roles of doctors (diagnosis provider) and patients (problem identifier) are interchangeable anytime as they diagnose one another. Each BG/ BU and plant faces different challenges and areas for improvement as they are different in the nature of their business and content. Through quality diagnosis new ideas are introduced and internal cross-function communication is enhanced. Brand News 03 Special Report There is one important feature for quality diagnosis at Delta. Aside from defining the situation through a slide presentation, all executives involved must visit the product lines to identify problems using their own expertise. An example is when Mr. Yancey Hai once visited fan production lines with former independent director Mr. Y.C. Lo, who found excessive waste in the injection molding area and suggested improvements for the manufacturing process. At present, plants par ticipating in qualit y diagnosis include Taiwan, Dongguan, Wujiang, Wuhu, and Thailand. Accumulated experience and knowledge are systematically transferred to sharable platforms, where all plants can adopt for use. This program is expected to be held at DGC this year. In addition, automation has become a key item for diagnosis in recent years, with a thorough discussion on how to enhance automation and improve production efficiency. Mr. MS Tu from the Corporate Operation Enhancement Division, who oversees quality diagnosis efforts in all plants, has interpreted quality diagnosis into three levels: (1) Internal execution power (2) Integration of customer values (3) Strategic integration in the group 1 2 Currently Delta is at the first level, under which are four aspects: discipline, increased efficiency, reoccurrence prevention, and predictive prevention. Mr. Tu emphasizes that "discipline" is the key element for internal execution and sustainable organic growth. On fostering principles, one cannot neglect the SOP (standard operation procedure), which lays the foundation for meeting demands of high quality. Mr. Bobby Lai, Quality Chief/China Region, points out, "Process defines quality. It is very important to implement ISO through overall participation, standardize operation procedure, learn from unsatisfactory cases, continue the learning effort and improve, maintain loyalty and execution." 3 Customized service to implement total quality control Delta manages multiple product lines, which greatly differ from one another with diverse technologies. Mr. Ping Cheng emphasizes that quality is not to be "tested" but to be "designed in"; therefore more interaction is recommended for all products and all plants. In particular, engineers must visit the manufacturing unit in the early stages of design, so that 4 1-4︱ Venue for quality diagnosis Brand News 04 Special Report they will have a better understanding of the production process and the inherent challenges, and eventually contribute such knowledge to lower cost and increase quality. Mr. Ping Cheng points out that in the past, Delta focused more on technology R&D, product planning, design and manufacturing. Now, in response to business transformation, the prioritized goal at the moment is to create higher customer satisfaction by offering customer support and service, collecting and analyzing user information, and recommending comprehensive solutions. As to how to exceed customers’ expectations, Mr. Tu elaborates with a real case. "In the textile industry, an AC Motor Drive plays a key role. However, if we only aim to produce standard AC Motor Drives, it's not enough. We must go a step further to provide configuration services, survey the site and have client discussions early on during planning, recommend options for specs, and spontaneously carry out postsale services." Mr. Yancey Hai asserts that the market no longer appreciates "one product fits all" as it used to, and companies must focus on creating unique value for consumers. Being able to draw resources from the market is one organic advantage, while in the past all resources must be pre-owned as a company asset. Mr. Hai reminds Delta colleagues that the best source for creation is the customers themselves—that "we must listen to their voices and create a smart green life together". Through quality diagnosis, contact and exchange among different regions, we are not only allowed to identify issues and find matching solutions, but also to "learn from others while examining ourselves". Cross-plant and inter-business unit communication is thus enhanced, which then helps to formulate a better business model for Delta to reach the goal of comprehensive quality elevation. Mr. Ping Cheng further envisions that Delta will work towards the recognition of a "Deming Award", the highest honor for quality management in the world. Such persistence and internal demand for quality has won recognition for Delta from customers such as Sony, Panasonic, Cisco, Fujitsu Siemens, Intel, Microsoft and more. Smarter. Greener. Together. Mr. Mark Ko hopes that "quality diagnosis" will lead the way for "quality control", taking Delta from managing "product quality" to "quality management". Throughout the process, all Delta members will advance their learning of quality and it is expected that everyone will "you do what you say". A few years ago, Mr. Ko hoped to see all business units familiarize themselves with green information, catch up with the inevitable global trend of going green, and incorporate "green design" into key products. He has encouraged Delta colleagues to transform their expertise into plain knowledge and common sense that everyone can understand. All about quality! These familiar sayings are different interpretations of how to reach higher quality: ● Customer ● Do satisfaction is the key the right thing at the right time ● Prevention ● Meeting ● Next the specs means quality product line is my customer ● Numbers ● Small ● The is better than the cure talk defects lead to big failure cost of low quality is actually high Brand News 05 Brand Circle Delta presents Taiwan's largest outdoor circular projection The “Ring of Celestial Bliss” lights up the night in Hsinchu and showcases the Delta brand of integrated solutions At the 2013 Taiwan Lantern Festival the Delta Electronics Foundation will present the “Ring of Celestial Bliss”, a ten-meter tall, seventy-meter outdoor circular projection and LED lighting show. Thanks to Delta's edge-blending projection technology, the “Ring of Celestial Bliss” will portray the birth of the universe, planetary motion, and the seasonal beauty of Taiwan. For the exterior, an integrated LED lighting solution will create fabulous images of the four seasons. The first building to pass a "Building Carbon Audit" in Taiwan A highly anticipated annual event, the Chinese New Year Lantern Festival, will be held at the Energy-saving Lantern Area at the Hsinchu high-speed rail station from February 24th to March 10th. With its corporate mission "To provide innovative, clean and energy-efficient solutions for a better tomorrow," Delta has introduced the "Building Carbon Audit - a carbon dioxide emission reduction assessment system", which calculates carbon emissions of a building throughout its lifecycle. Completed during its design, the “Ring of Celestial Bliss” was the first structure to pass the "Building Carbon Audit". "Delta Ring of Sustainability" features Delta's integrated display and lighting solutions Brand News 06 Brand Circle The “Ring of Celestial Bliss” was designed by renowned architect J.J. Pan. Based on the motif of "ring", the flowing panoramic lights and shadows will impress visitors and evoke the sustainable cycle of nature. 1 Hsinchu, the venue for the 2013 Chinese New Year Lantern Festival, was called Chu-chien—City of Bamboo Walls during the Qing dynasty. Bamboo was incorporated into the outer surface of the “Ring of Celestial Bliss”. The main structure is built with reusable steel, the interior projection screen made of recycled materials, while the permeable floor was paved with bamboo tubes—all are ecology-conscious materials sourced locally that lowers energy consumption from transportation. The steel and bamboo materials used in the “Ring of Celestial Bliss” will be gifted to education institutes and NGOs for reuse after the festival. Long Lasting and Sustainability 2 1-2︱ Bamboo was incorporated into the outer surface of the“Ring of Celestial Bliss”while the permeable floor was paved with bamboo tubes—all are ecology-conscious materials sourced locally It is the shared values of Mr. Bruce Cheng, founder of Delta Group, and all Delta members to pursue the sustainability of nature. The “Ring of Celestial Bliss” fuses high-lumen projectors and seamless circular projection in the interior evoking the origin of the universe and magnificent planetary motion. “The Sun and the Moon follow the Tao of Nature; thus can their shining be long lasting. The seasons of the Earth keeps on changing and transforming in rhythm; thus can its ability to nurture and to produce long endure.” It is particularly meaningful at this time to learn from the teaching of The Gua (hexagram) of Heng (Long Lasting) of I Ching (Book of Change). It tells us that pursuing sustainability requires following the rules of nature which reside in the constant change and transformation of our environment. We need to adapt, and be alert and sensitive to changing nature and to facilitate sustainable development, just like the constantly moving Sun and Moon and the ever-changing seasons of the Earth, which nurture and produce. Delta is honored to invite internationally renowned calligraphy master Ms. Yangzi Dong to illustrate "Long Lasting" and to express the sustainable power of the sun, the moon, and four seasons. The Sun and the Moon follow the Tao of Nature; thus can their shining be long lasting. The film presents the magnificence of the universe and its origin, the order of planetary motion, and the wonder of human beings. When survival is threatened, people reflect and take actions step-by-step. From this, Delta aspires to provide more energy-saving products and solutions, create a smarter, greener life together, make our environment green and clean, and thus sustain Mother Nature. The seasons of the Earth keeps on changing and transforming in rhythm; thus can its ability to nurture and to produce long endure. This segment of film is a re-edit of “Taiwan Beautiful, All Seasons” Ms. Yang-tze Tong, a renowned calligrapher, by CommonWealth Magazine, which interprets the beauty of Taiwan illustrates the meaning of "Long Lasting" through her work in spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Brand News 07 Brand Circle Showcasing advanced projection and integrated LED lighting solutions For the festival, Delta’s display system integration team will organize fifteen 3-chip DLP advanced projection systems to transmit vivid colors and precise, refined, and fresh layers of images. Thanks to Delta's display processing technologies ultra-advanced 30,0 0 0 - lumen projectors will cast a seamless, integrated view on the curved rough surface, which spreads over sixty meters, with 12 million plus pixels, and create a theater-level sensory experience. The exterior surface of the installment will be covered by 155 Delta LED wall lights, saving about 80% in energy Delta display team overcomes the highly challenging uneven consumption compared to traditional halogen lights. LED wall curved screen and presents perfect seamless projection lights are placed along the lower parts of the steel structure and the light is cast upon bamboo surfaces. The lights will play upward, showing the ever-changing power of life. In addition, the outer wall will be further decorated with LED linear lights, mimicking the imagery of the four seasons. Innovative teamwork breaks through limits of video production Different from most projection surfaces, the projection screen of the “Ring of Celestial Bliss” comes in an extraordinary shape, much like a piece of moving silk sleeve. There are a few rough irregularities, inward-turning angles at both sides, and the width that the projected content requires actually amounts to seven times 1920x1080 Full HD. Such specifications are a tremendous task even for the most advanced projectors available today - no one single projector can fully show the images. However, as Delta is always willing to take on challenges, the lantern festival team has successfully overcome the curved surface after numerous trials and assessments, including 1:1 mock up test projection. It is a mission impossible that was successfully completed. Delta Green Life Pavilion grand opening For behind-the-scene stories and a sneak peek at the “Ring of Celestial Bliss”, a special exhibition, open to all Delta members and the general public, will be held on the first floor of the Yang-Kuang Building Taipei starting on February 6th and ahead of the Lunar New Year. The four areas of the exhibition include buildings, carbon footprint, video, and Delta integrated display and lighting solutions. A permanent exhibition will extend the spirit of the event, allowing more people to experience the environmental education provided by the “Ring of Celestial Bliss”. The outer wall was further decorated with LED linear lights, mimicking the imagery of the four seasons Brand News 08 Brand Circle A fatal attraction of CES 2013: Innergie and Vivitek The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2013, the most famous in the world, ended in early January and apart from displaying Innergie and Vivitek, the two consumer electronics brands of Delta, the company presented its scope of businesses and brand spirit to more than 150,000 buyers worldwide. Photo of the SDC team Brand News 18 Brand People Integrating Resources, Encouraging Synergies Donald Yu, General Manager of Delta GreenTech, talks about the company’s growth and challenges When Delta Group’s annual strategy meeting was held at the end of May, 2012, Mr. Yancey Hai, emphasized the four strategic aspects of Delta's future development: "Reinforce current market leadership in ODM", "Develop the branded and solutions business", "New business to take hold of market timing and profit", and "Develop and cultivate regional markets". Among them, the “regional market development” and “branded and solution business” are intertwined. Starting this year, Delta’s Brand News Bi-Monthly presents a new column that features in-depth interviews with key figures in Delta's branded business and shares their abundant front-line experience in different regional markets with all Delta colleagues. The column starts with Delta GreenTech (DGC), a Delta subsidiary that has been cultivating China market for more than 20 years. Embracing business transformation with step by step planning Mid of December, the busiest time of 2012 for DGC, Donald Yu, General Manager, was running a fully packed schedule with meetings, planning, setting goals and making concluding remarks. Everything seemed to be falling into place in a steady pace. 2012 was a critical milestone for Delta’s resource integration and brand transformation in China market, as DGC was confronting with new opportunities and challenges. Mr. Yu shouldered the responsibility of rapidly directing DGC on the new development path. Honestly, he said, he had to go full throttle. Mr. Donaold Yu, GM of Delta GreenTech, shares his China experiences " Nowadays all industr ies talk about meeting customer needs, solution centric services, and so on, because we're all aware that the era of “one-product-fits-all” has passed. As technologies mature and expand towards universal application, customers cares about not only their needs but also overall performance. To comprehensively understand customer needs and integrate products into appropriate solutions is the most important task. We started doing this early on, and it's an honor to share our experiences with our Delta colleagues via this internal communication platform." Clarifying role and responsibility to master all aspects of market demands Customer needs can change anywhere and at anytime. To deliver comprehensive services, DGC must restructure its human resource allocation, establish positions for cross team collaboration, and research the market from different point of views - all for the purpose of serving customers better. The Region Manager is in charge of handling primary local industries, key accounts and their needs, and mastering market trends at the field. The Application Manager is in charge of mastering industry niches and demand and then integrating industrial applications. Product Manager, Brand News 19 Brand People who works closely with business units, coordinates product development, introduction and promotion, and introducing combined products to meet customer requirements. "This is a structure that has taken shape only after more than 20 years of trial and error at DGC. However, past growth path will not meet the challenges of the future. We have to change as market evolves and adjust quickly accordingly." In 2012 DGC decided to establish key account service teams and create key account service centers in each business unit. On top of the “3M (RM, AM, PM)” functional structure, a Solution Manager was added to strengthen solution centric services, which lead to further market development and potential business opportunities. Mr. Yu pointed out that, "The only way to create competitive advantage together with our customers is to focus on them needs, grow with them, and become their strategic partner." Customized solutions to meet different customer needs respectively "Perhaps you can call it a benefit that I get to travel so often, from north to south," says Mr. Yu jokingly. At his position for more than a year, he has spent most working hours on airplanes or trains. His purpose is to gather first-hand observation of the market, and as a result, he has gained a deeper knowledge of culture, geography, and on-site customer application all around China. Recently DGC completed its 3.6Mwp PV system demonstration Delta's solar power solution for Haining Leather project for Haining Leather Town, located in the rich and populous Town, by estimate, will fulfill 50% of local power province of Zhejiang. For this crowded city where land usage is always meticulously planned, DGC proposed to launch a rooftop solar needs annually power generation system using limited available space. The project started in July, 2012, and was officially launched in October the same year. Annual power generation is estimated to reach 3.96 million kilowatts and to meet almost half of the electricity demands of the town. It is also DGC’s first success story for distributive on-grid power generation. In the Ali area of Tibet, demands for solar energy are of a completely different nature when compared with Haining Leather Town. The population is sparse, as buildings are remote and located far apart. DGC’s proposal was for an off-grid solar power generation solution in which independent systems can be installed in different places and not affect one another. Eight off-grid solar power stations are to be built to generate a total power of 310 kW - a project which was ultimately approved and recognized by the client. Total solutions, a challenge for collaboration Different from OEM model that focuses on sales, total solutions require iDifferent from the OEM model that focuses on sales, the solution centric service requires integration of products and then being developed into a solution that involves participation of several business units. From the size, color, coating, configuration of the product, signal connections, the direction for opening data center doors, to the location of the logo - everything must be adjusted on site to meet customer expectations. This is an enormous challenge for front-line sales representatives, product designers and developers, the FAE team involved in the project, as well as for customized production at the factory. Should there be one single mistake in any part of the chain; the solution would not be complete. "I often remind my colleagues not to underestimate their contributions. Each position in the company comes with its own unique value, and it is only when everyone unleashes their own value that DGC delivers its value to customers." This is how Mr. Yu encourages his teams. At DGC, cross-functional communication and collaboration is very important as well as setting up standard operation procedure to accelerate the launch of integrated solutions. Providing comprehensive services to ensure business continuity "I just returned from Harbin last week. I was there to survey the operation of Delta's outdoor power system station. The temperature was -30°C, whereas in southern China the temperature could be over 40°C degrees in the summer. So I had a question: Would Delta's equipments operate normally and overcome such a huge temperature variation?" Mr. Yu confirmed the answer as yes to the editorial team. Brand News 20 Brand People DGC features comprehensive pre-sale services with localized solutions that ensure continuous operations of user facilities and enhance post-sale services. The Delta service teams, located all around China, are most valuable assets for DGC. With quick response to customer needs, these teams fulfill most customer service needs immediately. "Of course there is still room to improve. In 2013, the customer service and technology support units at DGC will transform from 'cost-oriented' to 'profit-oriented' units. That is, we will improve service quality by creating the value of our service. This is just the beginning. In the next few years the completed service system will be the priority of DGC's continuous efforts." Mr. Donald Yu surveys a Delta server center, built for a local mobile company, in Harbin under a minus-30-Celsiusdegree weather Resource integration within the group to expand markets throughout China It was at the China International Industrial Fair held in Shanghai at the end of 2012 that DGC first collaborated with Delta group at exhibition and demonstrated Delta's capabilities with diversified system solutions. Most of Delta’s top management team participated this milestone event. In the past year, DGC also worked closely with business units in the group for resource coordination. "As the saying goes, supplies always arrive ahead of the army; the resources of Delta’s BG/BUs are like our combat supplies. Only after we thoroughly grasp customer needs can the DGC army be fully supported and ready to compete in the China market." Mr. Yu stresses the importance of "communication". Since DGC knows the China market very well, it must guide Delta’s BG/BUs in allocating resources in the right spots for the right projects. "We are more than willing to increase involvement of BG/BUs in various events held by different BG/BU. They also spontaneously follow our sales teams to meet with users and further understand the market as well as customers, so they can solve customer problems." New CI System starts a new page for branding On January 1st, 2013, the new logo for DGC was officially launched, symbolizes the acceleration of integration with Delta Group. It was also another milestone for Delta’s branded business in China. No matter which DGC office you visit, the new logo is ever present. The primary task for DGC during the latter half of 2012 was integration with the Delta brand. Thanks to thorough discussions with Brand Management Office, DGC gradually prepared for completely replacing its corporate ID and trademark. On January 1st, 2013, external corporate identity of DGC was officially upgraded, and now there is only "One Delta" to be seen from name cards to mobile offices. "When entering the branded business, you must be determined that there is no turning point," says Mr. Donald Yu firmly. "In the past, our sales teams spent much time explaining the connection between Delta and DGC. With the selfexplanatory new logo, sales teams have given very positive feedback and customers have responded positively too." Speaking of experience in brand integration and promotion, Mr. Yu stressed that "Straightforward brand integration means a great deal to the company. Pay attention to communication and preparation in the preliminary stages, design comprehensive action plans, and implement it rapidly, and you'll see instant and amazing results." Envisioning 2013, embracing change and innovation Although there are still uncertainties in the global economy that might impact the China market, domestic demands are not to overlooked. Reviewing 12th five-year development plan of China, "energy-saving" is one key trend. Mr. Yu looks forward to DGC demonstrating its energy-saving solution capabilities. "Operate with integrity and honesty, communicate and create profits, focus on implementation" is what Mr. Yu expects from DGC employees in 2013. Extending the 2012 statement of "change, innovate, and fly high into the wind", Mr. Donald Yu aims to share the responsibility of Delta’s brand and succeeding in the Chinese market together with DGC! Brand News 21 Brand Academy Creative industrial design that touches your heart Industrial design, simply put, is a process of designing and defining to make product functions useful and appearances beautiful. To enhance the competitive advantages of Delta products, Delta has invited Duck Xie, the international award-winning designer (90+ awards) and CEO of the GIXIA Group, to share his designs, success cases, and innovative ideas. In the early days, says Xie, ODM/OEM dominated the local industry in Taiwan. Product development focused on specifications and client demands. After establishing their own brands in the market, enterprises should pay attention to consumer behavior, provide innovative business concepts and services, and develop and design with people in mind. It is also important to integrate innovative design into daily operations. To increase brand value and profits designers should rely on their imaginations to make breakthroughs, combine sense and sensibility, and implement creativity in product development. Besides aesthetics, Xie also emphasizes materials and the essence of technological innovation. His core values in innovation include "touching symbols", "visionary technology" and "innovative techniques". He is also inspired by natural elements to design products that speak to people. Designers anticipate people's dreams, and realize them through sharp observation and design, says Xie (note) Innovative design is all around us Creative products are abundant in our lives. As a result, the popularization of electric vehicles (EV) has slowed in Japan. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan thus plans ¥5 million to subsidize carport facility suppliers to build carports. If the policy is enforced, the Japanese government will subsidize about 50% of the charging equipment cost of each quick-charge carport (charges an EV within 30 minutes) built by suppliers. It is expected that the policy will encourage suppliers to build more carports, accelerate EV popularity, and make the environment greener. Taiwanese and Japanese Industries Team Up to Capture EV Market Although world-leading lithium battery manufacturers Sanyo and Sony have been the market leaders over time, a negative impact has been seen in the electric vehicle (EV) market with the rise of Korean lithium batter y manufacturers, the increasing competition on the EV market, and the collaboration of global component suppliers targeting at the EV market. Eyeing a manufacturing advantage, Sanyo and Sony intend to team up with Taiwanese battery manufacturers to promote the development and manufacture of EV lithium batteries and thereby enforce the integration and development of system modules through collaboration. Voice Recognition Expected to Replace Touch Panels The Perceptual Computing Department of Intel predicts that voice recognition will compress the growth of touch panels in the next 3-5 years. At present, Intel is working with partners and aggressively building a complete industrial ecosystem to develop software, hardware, and camera lenses with perceptual computing. TechNavio, a technology market survey organization, also predicts a 22.97% compound annual growth rate (CGAR) of the voice recognition market. The demand for voice biometric recognition technologies and the voice recognition function in mobile devices are two major factors. The future of the voice recognition market is promising. Focus suppliers including Nuance Communications Inc., MModal Inc., and ValidSoft Ltd. are aggressively developing all potential voice applications. New Opportunities for ICT from Intelligent Green Buildings The awareness of environmental protection has been rising in recent years due to climate change and petrochemical energy depletion. According to expert predictions, more than 70% of the global population will live in urban areas by 2050, and the demand for urban infrastructure thus augments. At present, there are 3,600 green buildings in Taiwan, the highest density in the world, making a great contribution to energy conservation and emission reduction. The rise of intelligent green buildings allows ICT to transform from a supporting character of buildings into the leading character and to turn the system integration, integrated wiring, and facility management of intelligent infrastructures into “building materials”. This will help to promote energy conservation and emission reduction, improve the living quality of the public, and increase the value of the architecture, construction, and ICT industries in Taiwan. To the ICT industry, this will help the industry to rid the profit reducing trend and create new opportunities for ICT development.
