Some Highlights of 50 Happy Years in the Priesthood
Education - Seminary for 8 years – St. Gregory and Mt. St. Mary’s - college and theologate. Not bad. I made a
lot of lifelong friends and I got to play ball an hour every day. Summer school at Xavier was even better.
I got to play ball two hours a day and a beer afterwards
Rome - a great place to study if you like wine and pasta. I was fortunate to do my doctoral
dissertation under the great moral theologian, Bernard Haring. The topic was on the social
justice teaching of Julius Nyerere, the first president of Tanzania. Nyerere was declared by
the Holy Fathers “a servant of God” which is the first step to canonization. I had a Vatican
appointment to be part of that process. These studies gave me an opportunity to meet
missionaries in many countries.
Teaching - Regina High School for three years – great experience to make theology simple.
Mt. St. Mary’s full time for 10 years – that’s why I was sent to Rome. Overlapping this was half time at Xavier
for ten years and every Tuesday for almost 30 years at the University of Dayton. One reason I enjoyed teaching
so much was the opportunity to study at the Case Study Institute at Harvard University. Professors from the
business and law schools demonstrated how to teach using cases instead of lectures. It really gets the students
engaged quickly.
On being a pastor – the best part! 1978-84 Pastor of St. Anthony in Madisonville; 1984-94 Pastor of St. Clair
in College Hill; and 1994-?? Pastor of Holy Family – best kept secret in the Archdiocese. On this July 1st
I will begin my 23rd year here.
50 YEARS! I can’t believe how quickly the time has gone and when it comes to the mystery of Christ and his
Church, I feel like I’m just beginning. Fr. Civille

Health Ministry:
Memorial Day… A Time of Remembering
"To live in the hearts of those you leave behind
is never to die." Robert Orr
Memorial Day began as a day to commemorate
all those who had died while serving in the
U.S. Armed Forces. In recent years it has also
become a special day to honor family and friends.
Some creative ways to honor them:
+ Say a prayer for all those who are now serving.
+ Donate money or time to those less fortunate.
+ Visit a place you both liked.
+ Play their favorite music.
+ Provide memorial flowers to your church.
+ Select an activity or interest of your loved one
and take it on as your own.
+ Begin a memorial scholarship or charitable
bequest in their name.
+ Watch for coins on the ground. Legend says
each coin - specifically a penny - you find is
tossed down from heaven by your loved one
to say hello and send love. Put this "sent love"
to work for others and donate to a cause of
your/their choice.
And as we do these things, we can almost hear
their words, "Thanks for Remembering."

Introductions to Sunday Readings
by Bishop Ken Untener, in collaboration
with Catherine Haven and Fr. Bill Taylor
First Reading - Genesis 14: 18-20
Today’s reading from the book of Genesis tells us all
we know about an obscure king named Melchizedek.
Abraham had just won a military victory, and
Melchizedek honors him with a meal of bread and
wine. Over the course of time, this meal was seen
as a distant foreshadowing of the Eucharist, which
is why this passage was chose for today’s feast.
Second Reading - 1 Corinthians 11: 23-26
The first letter to the Corinthians was written
about 25 years after Christ’s death and resurrection.
Today’s passage contains our earliest written account
of what Jesus did at the Last Supper. It predates even
the Gospels.

UPDATES
The final totals are in for our Pantene Beautiful Lengths
Haircutting Service Event. We were able to donate 166
inches of hair and $142.00 to this wonderful organization. Once again, thank you to Mrs. Katie Whitacre,
kindergarten teacher, and Mrs. Terri Mulhall, librarian,
for organizing and planning this event.
THANK YOU
We want to thank you for allowing us to participate
and lead the 4:30 Mass on Saturday, May 21, 2016.
I know I am biased, but I think our readers did a
wonderful job, our choir sounded beautiful, our greeters were very welcoming, and our gift bearers very
reverent. I thank our very talented staff who came and
provided musical accompaniment: Katie Whitacre –
harp, Joy Friday – flute, and Kathryn Gardocki –
trumpet. Once again we thank Steve and Marilyn Ifcic
for helping everything run so smoothly. This is our way
of giving you, the parishioners, a glimpse of the quality
of our school program, and our way of saying THANK
YOU for all of your support and prayers.
CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES
On Thursday evening, May 26th, we graduated 36
8th graders from St. John XXIII School. We wish them
the best of luck as they move on to this next phase of
their lives. You will be missed, so please come back
and visit. We will think of you often and continue to
pray for you!

In that most idealized period of 20th-century
America, the Eisenhower years of the 1950s, the
Pazinski family has a lot going on in their cramped
Buffalo apartment. The youngest of the bunch,
12-year-old Rudy, is a smart, wise-cracking kid
who's starting to question family values and the
Roman Catholic Church. When Rudy goes up
against the ruler-wielding Sister Clarissa and
announces that instead of being confirmed he'd
rather shop around for a more "fun" religion, all
hell breaks loose. A warm and hilarious look at
family, growing up, and God.
