Principal’s Message th Week 9 • 24 March, 2014 Have you ever wondered what the 5 highest positive impacts on your child’s learning progress at school are? Research from John Hattie (2012) involved synthesising the results of millions of samples of data relating to evidence based research. This meta-analysis provided a list of what actually works in schools to improve learning. The following list is the top 5 positive impacts on a child’s learning progress at school: 1. High expectations for student learning 2. Piagetian programs (ways of thinking) 3. Teacher credibility 4. Providing formative evaluation 5. Warmest regards, John Hinton PS John Hattie (2012) has also measured the impact of composite/multi-age classes on student learning. It may surprise you to know that they actually have a positive effect on student learning (it should be noted that the positive effect is very minimal). Warmest regards, BRONCOS BANNER St Joseph’s Footy Tipping Leaders are: Wild Hair The Harney’s Henny Chocolate Frog New School Classification In the most recent Teacher Industrial Agreement, Childers has been reclassified as a IPRASS (Incentive Payments – Remote Area Staff Scheme) centre. Four other BCE school have also been reclassified. This classification leads to much additional funding for our school and two additional ‘travel leave days’ for our teaching staff. This will mean our school cannot open to students on these two days. Cross Country Congratulations to Wira, who were able to beat the best team (Djaagan) at the recent Cross Country carnival. Congratulations to Age Champions. Pam Betts (BCE Executive Director) has considered the impact of these travel leave days on all of the IPRASS BCE schools involved (Childers, Murgon, Gayndah, Nanango and Kingaroy). The most likely days for two travel leave days will be the first day of term 2 and the first day of term 3. If you would like to discuss this with me further please make contact. rd First day of term 2 for students will be Wednesday, 23 April. School Board Update rd At the end of 2013, Julie Bonanno completed her 3 and final year as Chair of the School Board. Julie’s leadership of the School Board over these 3 years provided continuity, stability and progress. St Joseph’s School acknowledges Julie’s service and thanks her for the positive impact on our community. Julie continues as a full participating member of the Board. IGA Soccer for Kids As a part of HPE, students at St Joseph’s have been learning soccer skills. Our sincere thanks to Phoyx for imparting his knowledge of soccer. Stacey Harney is our new School Board Chair and Jody Blake our new Deputy Chair. We warmly welcome Stacey and Jody to these roles. If you would like to participate as a member of the Board, please contact the principal directly. Parents and Friends Update The March P&F meeting has been rescheduled for Wednesday, nd 2 April at 7pm. As a part of this month’s meeting, the P&F will discuss which projects they will fund throughout 2014. In recent years the P&F has funded the cold and filtered water taps, ipads, literacy resources and an upgrade of the technology in the hall. Please feel free to attend the meeting and be involved in the discussion. Alternatively, make contact with a member of the P&F Executive to put your ideas forward (2014 Executive members were announced in the previous newsletter). In term 2 there are plans to have the AFL Auskick program, as well as visits to the Isis Bowls Club during HPE lessons to further expand childrens knowledge of a variety of sports. ANZAC Day Please be aware that ANZAC Day falls on the first Friday of term 2. We do not yet have information relating to the 2014 Childers March. However, assuming there are no changes, the following paragraph provides some information. St Joseph’s will be participating in the local March in 2014. Children participating are asked to assemble on the corner of North and Churchill Streets at 9.45am. The march is scheduled to commence at 10am. Woolworths Earn and Learn Resources Thank you to families who participated in collected shopper dockets for the Woolworth Resources for School program. As you can see from the picture, we received our resources and have allocated these to classrooms. Help our school to win a set of iPads The Bundaberg NewsMail is running a competition giving schools a chance to win a set of 10 iPads. All you need to do is collect the token in the paper and hand them into the schools office. And what’s great is that all schools stand an equal chance of winning, as they’ll pro-rata entries across the number of enrolled students to st determine the winner. Competition closes Monday, March 31 . Class News This term Prep students have been discussing God's creation and Year One have been discussing the story of Noah's Ark. Students have been busy recalling information from both stories and creating symbols that are on display in their classrooms. The Year One/Two Class students have been learning about different images of God that are identified in the Old Testament and discussing/ creating their own images of God which are displayed around their classroom. The overarching idea/ focus for our Year Three Class has been moral living. Students have used the Beatitudes and the Ten Commandments as a basis for their discussions and activities. This term in the Year Four/Five Class, students have been composing their own prayers using the you, who, do, through prayer strategy. In small groups, they also led the class in a prayer liturgy each day, choosing a theme, relevant psalm, scripture passage and prayers that they had composed. The Year Six/Seven Class have been using an interactive Learning Byte produced by Brisbane Catholic Education to explore the Catholic Church in the Land Down Under.
