Thank you for your support by getting your child into their back-to-school routine. We acknowledge that so much of their success at school depends on your support at home, so thank you! As part of our Area of Focus this year, we are working on maintaining a positive climate building-wide by increasing student ownership through implementation of The Leader In Me program based on Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. In September we focused on an overview of all 7 habits and now we will begin focusing on a habit each month. For October we are studying the first habit which is to “Be Proactive”. This means take charge of your own life and make things happen for yourself instead of waiting for someone else to do things for you. In kid-friendly terms we say, “I’m a responsible person and I have a positive “Can Do” attitude. I choose my actions, attitudes, and moods. I do not blame others for my wrong actions. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking.” Thank you for encouraging your child to be proactive! Two other areas of The Leader In Me program that we are implementing are Data Binders and Sharpening the Saw Clubs. Data Binders are portfolios that include the targets and standards for each grade level and evidence of student work towards those standards. They also include student assessment data and individual goals. These binders will be a valuable tool used during your child’s upcoming conference in November. Our clubs will begin this Friday and focus on Habit #7 to “Sharpen the Saw”. Clubs will be the last 30minutes on Friday afternoons during what used to be our Cougar Cub Recess time. We have a variety of clubs to help students “Sharpen their Saw”. Some include: chess, art, cooking, fitness, sign language, gardening, technology, photography, drama/acting, and more! As always, please feel free to drop by my office and say hello or send me an email at astaudenraus@lwsd.wednet.edu. Here’s to a great year! ~Mrs. Amy Staudenraus, Principal November Late Start Wednesdays November 6th (A) Kindergarten November 20th (B) Kindergarten Classrooms open at 9:50. Please do not drop off students prior to then as there is no supervision. School begins at 10:05. Families looking for childcare solutions have a choice of several local agencies that can help provide services, such as Boys & Girls Club, Campfire, and the YMCA. Attention all Fathers and Father-figures! WATCH D.O.G.S.® is an innovative program being used by schools across America which helps them to be positively impacted by the committed involvement of fathers and father-figures in their student’s life. We would love to have you spend at least one day this year at the school to be a positive male role model and to provide an extra set of eyes and ears. Dads, granddads, uncles, step-dads and adult brothers . . . please drop by the LES Office to pick up a registration packet (including Volunteer Background Clearance Form and T-Shirt Order Form) and sign-up on the Watch D.O.G.S. Calendar in the main foyer. To get more information, please email the LES Watch D.O.G. Coordinator and Top Dog, Kevin Lebahn at watchdogs@lakewoodpta.net, contact the LES Office, or visit the Watch D.O.G. website at: www.fathers.com/watchdogs. Thank you for supporting our LES Students! ~Mrs. Staudenraus, Principal . HiJinx Carnival October 26th 6:00-8:30pm Lakewood High School Gym Enjoy a family night of games, prizes, bouncy houses, raffles, face painting and much, much more! Professional photographers will be available for a fun fall themed photo opportunity, so come in costume and join the festivities. Harvest Festivities! As Halloween approaches we often get questions about the kind of activities we will be doing at school and whether or not costumes will be worn. We know this can be an exciting day for children and we will make every effort to make it fun while preserving the educational environment. As has been done in the past at LES, we will continue with individual teachers deciding on harvest events for their classroom. On Thursday, October 31, students may wear costumes if the teacher allows that. Please follow the directions of your child’s teacher as to what expectations they have in regards to costumes on Oct. 31st. Students are encouraged to stick with a fall, harvest theme rather than the more scary costumes. Of course, toy guns, ammunition, knives, daggers and other toy weapons are not allowed at school. They will be taken away and a parent will need to come get the item from school. Make-up used to look like blood or gore should also be saved for activities outside of school. As you are deciding on costumes, please be aware that we do not have extra adult help for costumes. Students should be able to get in and out of their costume on their own. Also, please keep in mind that this is a full school day and costumes should not inhibit student learning. Thank you for helping your child to make appropriate school choices. Have fun and be creative as you put costumes together! ~Mrs. Staudenraus, Principal The Lakewood Elementary PTA Presents: SPOOKTACULAR SKATE NIGHT Tuesday October 29th 7:00-9:00pm Marysville Skate Inn 7313 44th Ave. NE $5 Admission includes skate rental Inline skates cost an addition $3 Bring your friends & family, wear your favorite costume and enjoy this privately sponsored event Don’t forget… the next day is a Late Start Wednesday NO OUTSIDE FOOD, DRINKS OR GUM.
