nsulated by the San Rafael
Mountains to the north
and the Santa Ynez
Mountains to the
south, the Santa
Ynez Valley is
located just 125
miles northwest
of L.A and 300
miles south of San
Francisco, but it feels
like a world away from
the hustle-bustle of city life.
The Valley’s five towns all
radiate a laid-back vibe and you’ll quickly
discover that each one has its own distinct
personality.
Founded in 1880, the sleepy village of
Ballard was the very first town to spring
up in the Santa Ynez Valley. At just 1.2
square miles, it is the smallest town in the
region but encompasses several historic
homes, churches, miniature donkeys and
the iconic “Little Red Schoolhouse” which
has been educating young residents
since 1883.
As the gateway to the Santa Ynez
Valley, Buellton provides easy access
to all of the region’s major destinations.
“Home of the Original Split Pea Soup”,
Buellton’s restaurants run the culinary
gamut serving everything from Asian and
Mexican food to Danish pancakes and
western-style steaks. You’ll also find many
local wine tasting rooms here, as well as
two regional craft breweries.
town. Los Alamos is home to a
thriving food, wine, arts and
antique scene.
The quaint historic
town of Los Olivos
serves up an
authentic slice of
Americana and
was used as one
of the locations for
the fictional town of
“Mayberry” from the
1960’s series, “The Andy
Griffith Show.”
You’ll discover several
prairie-style Victorian
buildings here dating back
over 100 years which
backdrop an eclectic collection of
wine tasting rooms, shops, restaurants and
antique stores.
There’s a lot to love about the
tranquil ranch town of Santa Ynez.
With more than 100 businesses, this
thriving community is renowned for its
highly acclaimed restaurants, authentic
saloons, world-class wineries and the
not-to-be-missed Santa Ynez Valley
Historical Museum & Parks - Janeway
Carriage House.
Known as “the Danish Capital of
America,” Solvang was established
as a Danish Colony in the early
20th century. With its Nordic--style
architecture, authentic Danish restaurants
Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Cafe Farm
and legendary bakeries and chocolatiers,
the village continues to envelop a rich
Danish heritage. If you want a true taste
of a Danish town, Solvang is just the ticket
- “no passport required!”
Originally the site of a Chumash Village,
Los Alamos is the northern entry to the
Santa Ynez Valley. Legend has it that the
highwayman and bandit, Solomon Pico,
popularized by the “Zorro” stories, hid out
in the hills above this tiny vintage western

THE VALLEY’S BEST
BEST HIDDEN FIND
BEST PAIRING
Former Actor-turned-Chef, Santo Cervello and
lovely wife Grace Lebecka set the stage for
gracious dining at their elegant European-style
restaurant which is tucked away in a beautiful
courtyard just across from the Solvang Festival
Theater. There are only a handful of entrees on
the menu but each one is masterfully made-toorder by Chef Santo with ingredients locallysourced by Grace. FYI: Don’t be surprised if
you see some familiar Hollywood faces here,
many of whom find this little hide-away a
welcome respite from the hectic L.A. scene.
Find it at 443 Second St., Solvang. 805-6862409; actorscornercafe.com.
Pinot and Pistachio. Chardonnay and
Chocolate Caramel. Cookies and wine - who
knew?!? Brian Loring is one of California’s
top Pinot Noir producers and his clever Wine
& Cookie Artisan Pairing Flight includes
both sweet and savory cookies that have
been taste-tested to compliment the flavors
of his Pinots, Chardonnays and Divergence
blend. It’s a fun time and you can enjoy
1/2 price tastings every Monday. Find it at
420 East Hwy 246 in Buellton between the
Hitching Post II Restaurant and Ostrich Farm.

BEST HAPPY HOUR VIBE
The Landsby
The Landsby’s hip take on Solvang’s Danish
roots is readily apparent at this sleek hotel
lobby bar where inventive shrub-based craft
cocktails and $5 gourmet appetizers, along
with wine and drink specials draw a colorful
and sophisticated wine-country crowd. Happy

BEST PLACE TO PARTY
Solvang Brewing Company
Solvang’s sidewalks may roll up a
wee bit early for some, but not at this
happening Brewpub that rocks the
windmill until midnight (F & Sa ‘till 2
am). Award-winning beer crafted
on-site, a huge Danish-inspired menu,
great live entertainment and one of
the few full bars in town make it “Party
Central” for anyone looking for some
night time fun. With a lively Tap
Room, game room, two dining areas
and Fido-friendly outside patio, it’s THE
place to kick up your heels. Find it at
1547 Mission Drive, Solvang, 805688-2337; sovangbrewing.com
Jeff Paaske has a penchant for all things
Danish and his iconic Solvang Restaurant
embraces his heritage from the food to the
decor. The menu here screams Danish
Specialties but our absolute favorite is the
Sausage Platter - a hearty combination of
full-flavored German Bratwurst; thick, spicy
Danish Medisterpølse; big, juicy Knockwurst
and two zesty Chicken Sausages all heaped
with traditional red cabbage, sauerkraut,
mashed potatoes and gravy. Dejlig! FYI:
The Danish open-faced sandwiches here are
also yummy! Find it at 1672 Copenhagen
Drive, Solvang. 805-688-4655;

BEST GIFTS FOR WINE LOVERS
The Greenhouse Cafe
Los Olivos General Store
You haven’t truly experienced Solvang until
you’ve tasted authentic Danish Æbleskiver.
Served as a sweet breakfast or dessert treat,
these yummy “pancake balls,” are sprinkled
with powdered sugar and sometimes served
with jam. They are especially popular around
the holidays but are available here year-round
at many of Solvang’s fine Danish restaurants.
Our favorite is at Solvang’s popular “Nordic
Bistro” - the Greenhouse Cafe. Find it at
487 Atterdag, Solvang. 805-688-8408;

BEST CHEF’S TASTING MENU

OMG! If you want to experience true “fine
dining,” in an incredibly romantic setting,
this is about as good as it gets. The “Chef’s

each course elicits an “Ah-ha” moment that will
leave you angsting for more. From the grilled
Maine Lobster tail with Asian cabbage salad
and edible sea sand, to the warm Smoked
Sea Scallops over cornbread pudding with
papaya salsa, to the grilled Lamb Chops with
red pepper goat cheese poppers, it is one
of the Valley’s top dining experiences that
you absolutely MUST NOT MISS! Find it at
