If you have a special hobby, collection or interest,
please consider showing your treasures in the
library’s display case. The library features a special
display every month. We are currently preparing
2017’s display case schedule. For more information,
please call the library at 586-771-9020 ext. 286.
Youth SUMMER READING CLUB 2016
The 2016 Adult Summer
Reading Club has come to a
close. 221 adults participated in
the program, our highest count
since the program started in
2004! This year we offered
three programs, two adult
coloring sessions, and one program on the practice
of mindfulness, with great patron turnout at all three
events. Stop by the Adult Information Desk to pick
up a list of the top rated adult books read during the
program. Due to the large number of titles read by
our patrons, we limited the list to the top rated titles
owned by the St. Clair Shores Public Library.
It was a super summer full of fun and reading for
the 789 children who registered for “Move Play
Read” at the Library. Hundreds of children attended
the Terrific Tuesday programs and were entertained
by our own Youth Services Librarians and teen
volunteers. Summer Reading Club members got
active with dance, yoga, sports, and games at the
Terrific Tuesday programs. Everyone had lots of crafts
and prizes to take home all summer long. Many,
many thanks to the Friends of the St. Clair Shores
Public Library for providing funding for most of our
programs, and additional thanks go to our individual
sponsors. We would also like to thank the parents
who took the time to instill the value of reading in
their children through repeated trips to the library
and countless hours of reading time at home.
Thank you for making this year’s Adult Summer
Reading Club a success, as well as to our generous
sponsors who made the Adult Summer Reading Club
possible: Butter Run Saloon, Chicken Shack, Dairy
Queen, Friends of the St. Clair Shores Public Library,
Gilbert’s Hardware, Hodell’s Cake Shop, Opal’s
Hallmark, Paisano’s Pizza and Restaurant, Ram’s
Horn, Wally’s Frozen Custard, Waves Restaurant,
and a special thank you to Ann Powell!
Thank you to our generous sponsors: The Friends
of the Library, The Adventure Park, Bricks4Kidz,
Country Dairy, Cranbrook Institute of Science, Dairy
Queen, Edible Arrangements, The Great Skate,
The Henry Ford, Maloof Jewelry & Gifts, Michigan
Science Center, Skip Printing Co., Target – Clinton
Pointe, The August Family, Rebecca Cousineau, Jan
Drewek, Judith Eggly, Council Member Candice Rusie
& Pat Stelma!

ST CLAIR SHORES CULTURAL COMMITTEE
PRESENTS “DIA DIRECTOR’S CUT”
Salvador Salort-Pons, the new director of the Detroit
Institute of Arts, will be presenting some of his
favorite works of art, answering your questions, and
talking about his vision for the museum.
Join us in welcoming Director Salort-Pons Thursday,
November 3 at 7:00 PM at the Assumption
Greek Orthodox Church and Hall. Admission is
free. A reception with light refreshments and a cash
bar will follow the discussion. To pick up a voucher
and add your name to the guest list or for more
information, call the library at 586-771-9020.
Little Free Libraries in St. Clair Shores
The St. Clair Shores Public Library would like to
install Little Free Libraries in a handful of parks in
the city to offer reading options to those community
members who cannot make it into the physical
library building. Little Free Libraries will benefit
community members who may want a last minute
reading option while going out on a boat or taking a
family member to sport practice. The St. Clair Shores
Cool City Committee has graciously purchased three
Little Free Libraries to be installed in local parks. We
are asking local businesses, community groups and
individuals who would like to assist in purchasing
additional Little Free Libraries to contact the library.
Sponsors will have the opportunity to decorate their
library and a plaque will be placed on the Little Free
Library with the sponsor’s name. Any residents
interested in having a Little Free Library installed in
their neighborhood can contact the library for further
information.
Adult Coloring Program
The St. Clair Shores Public Library will be hosting
two more adult coloring programs on Wednesday,
September 14, 2016 and Wednesday
October 12, 2016 from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM. This
drop in program will take place in the William R. Gilstorf
Meeting Room at the St. Clair Shores Public Library. All
materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your
own supplies and snacks. Please contact the library at
586-771-9020 for details and information on
the program or check the library’s website at:
www.scslibrary.org.
TOUR BELLE ISLE WITH THE ST CLAIR SHORES
CULTURAL COMMITTEE
Take a tour of the beautiful and historic Belle Isle

Nature Center with a guide leading the way! Learn

24 and Saturday, October 22. The LEGO® blocks

are for children from birth through age four.
TEEN ADVISORY BOARD
Teen Advisory Board (T.A.B.) meetings will resume
this fall. Teens in grades six through twelve are
invited to attend the T.A.B. meetings to help plan teen
programs, provide input to the librarians, and discuss
favorite books with other teens. The meetings are
informal, friendly, and fun; plus, light refreshments
are served. Meetings are scheduled for Saturday,
September 17 and Saturday, October 15 at
2:00 PM. No registration is required.
THANK YOU, TEENS!
PAWS FOR READING
Paws for Reading continues
on Saturday afternoons
at 2:00 PM starting
September 10. Come read
to one of our friendly service
dogs! Paws for Reading is a
nationally recognized program designed to help
reluctant and struggling readers discover the joy of
reading with the help of a friendly canine.
Summer Reading Club would not be possible without
the assistance of our many teen volunteers, known
this year as “Champions.” The Youth Services
Librarians rely on them to perform a variety of tasks,
some rather mundane and others rather unusual.
Teens were of immeasurable help in handling daily
paperwork; handing out stickers, prizes, and entry
forms; and supervising crafts. They also willingly
and cheerfully participated in cleaning up after
each program. We are very fortunate to have such
enthusiastic and capable teens as part of our library
community. Thank you, Champions!
HALLOWEEN CRAFT
TEEN HALLOWEEN PARTY
Make a fang-tastic Halloween craft at the Library’s
drop-in craft session on Saturday, October 29
from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Directions and materials
will be provided, but an adult must accompany young
children to assist with scissors and glue. Wear your
Halloween costume and go trick or treating in the
library!
The Teen Advisory Board is planning a free (but
frightful) Halloween party for teens in grades six
and up on Monday, October 24 from 7:00 PM
to 8:30 PM. There will be spooky activities, games,
refreshments and a costume contest! Registration
begins Monday, October 3. (Having fun is
recommended but not required.)

POTENTIAL FRIENDS BOOKSTORE
Many of you have inquired about the possibility of a
Friends bookshop in the Library’s Reading Lounge, the
space that houses the Friends Gift Shop and former
café. This is an exciting prospect, ideally to become
a reality later in the year. Volunteers have responded
positively and we thank you for your commitment!
But, to be open during the same hours as the library,
we need even more fabulous volunteers to commit
to 3-hour shifts, including evenings and some
Saturdays. Please leave a message for the Friends
at the library if you are willing to volunteer.
FRIENDS VOLUNTEERS Needed
Speaking of volunteers, WE WANT YOU! Our gift
shop, used book sales and membership dues raise
funding for terrific library programs and projects,
including Summer Reading Club for children and
adults, free movie viewings, and special interest
speakers. We need volunteers to keep it all going!
All skills are welcome and there are a variety of
opportunities for volunteers. Would you like to help
with our book sales? Would you enjoy helping in the
gift shop? Have computer skills? The membership
community would love to have you. You can contact
the Friends by leaving a message at the Library. Join
us today!
FRIENDS GIFT SHOP Open Daily
The Friends Gift Shop, located in the Library Reading
Lounge, is open daily for business. A new shipment
of jewelry and gift items has just arrived, so please
drop in the next time you are at the library. Even
though café service is no longer available, the
Reading Lounge remains open for shopping at the
Gift Shop and browsing the selection of high quality
used books for sale. Soon, vending machines will be
available for your convenience.

to Friends member Mary Ann Widman, who chaired

Fall Hours
The Selinsky-Green Farmhouse Museum will be
open on Wednesdays and
Saturdays from 1:00-4:00
PM beginning September
10. Visit us and learn about
what daily life was like in rural
St. Clair Shores in the late 19th century and the early
20th century. Free special tours are also available, as
well as low-cost rental for small groups. Please call
(586) 771-9020 to schedule your special tour or to
rent the museum.
Tour Guides Needed
Do you love history and old buildings? If so, we need
you at the Selinsky-Green Farmhouse Museum. A
docent is essentially a tour guide that assists the
museum curator in giving tours of the museum
and helps with special events. You don’t need any
experience to become a docent. Docents volunteer
their time as often as they want to; some docents
come a few times a month, others a few times a year.
If you are interested please call (586) 771-9020 and
leave a message for the museum curator. We look
forward to hearing from you!
