Mike & Jamie Placeway are coming from the Chicago area to be a HS Bible/ English and Yearbook teacher respectively. They were both raised in Christian homes, both love Spanish, and have been married almost 2 years. They are excited to become part of our community because it seems to genuinely care for students, teachers, and staff. They have always discussed living abroad at some point in their marriage, wanting to broaden their cultural perspective by visiting other countries and living and immersing themselves in another culture. Mike has been teaching Spanish at Wheaton Academy for 4 years now, enjoying coaching scholastic bowl, and being a sponsor for Project LEAD (student leadership & discipleship development). Other hobbies have been swimming competitively (started in MS), coaching, rock climbing, and biking. He describes himself as kindhearted, empathetic, and enthusiastic, and looks forward to participating in worship at ECA through music, and spurring others toward worship and discipleship! He graduated from Wheaton College in May 2012 with a double major in Spanish and Education. He has spent a good amount of time abroad in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and eastern Europe. April 29, 2016 Issue #35 - 28 Jamie works at Tyndale House Publishers as the Advertising and Promotions Coordinator. She earned her BA in Communication / Interpersonal Communication from Wheaton College in May 2014, where she minored in Spanish. She studied for a summer in Spain, after which she traveled throughout Italy and France. She has also been to Mexico twice for week-long mission trips. Like Mike, she was a competitive swimmer – for 17 years. No longer swimming, she loves to stay active through running, hiking, etc., and is an assistant swim coach at Wheaton College. In high school, she was editor-in-chief of the yearbook, and has experience in Photoshop and InDesign. Jamie describes herself as compassionate, dedicated, and relaxed, and loves to extend hospitality, along with Mike. They will miss their 2-year-old dog Pax who isn’t coming with them. If you were praying for Beth Afanador’s recruiting trip last fall, you can rejoice at this tangible answer – she met Mike and Jamie at the ACSI recruiting fair, and now they are on their way! Pray for them as they continue preparing to come down, and keep praying for the Lord to send us more good matches! ECA Weekly Bulletin bulletin@eca.edu.co 3 Cover CALENDARS Prev. Next Page Educate Yourself about the Battle for Religious Freedom The current struggle in Colombia for confessional schools to be able to teach their beliefs about heterosexual marriage and other related topics is raging. Parents can be actively involved in this struggle by signing petitions, sharing their concerns, and communicating with lawmakers. To learn more about these important topics, you can watch a series of videos in Spanish on http://www. redfamiliacolombia.org/. This coming week we need as many signatures as possible on a petition against a decree being proposed that will severely limit schools in their freedom to teach their beliefs. If you are at ECA for any reason this upcoming week and want to join the protest, stop by the front office and sign the petition against this proposed new law. Page Elementary Upper Elementary Cover Chapel Next Page Lower Elementary “Love always protects.” We looked at two illustrations of “love always protects.” First, we had a visit from a lieutenant colonel in the Colombian Air Force who talked about the Air Force’s role in protecting the country. The military airplanes fly high in the sky above the earth to protect Colombian citizens from harm, but God is up even higher than the airplanes, and he is our biggest protector. Second, Nurse Sol shared about how important it is to take care of those who are sick, and protect them from further harm. If a student is walking with crutches and we run in the hallway, we would not be protecting that person, but rather possibly causing them more harm if we bump into them. The way we act and play can protect others or cause them harm; but if we are loving, we will always choose to protect those around us.
