With warm, welcoming centers and a full medical team, patients can take comfort in knowing great

appointment needed. Centers offer walk-in treatment for everyday illness and injury, including
more advanced offerings such as X-rays, IVs, EKGs, labs, minor surgery, stitches and treatment
for broken bones, sprains and strains. Patients can also receive wellness and prevention services such as physicals, wellness exams tobacco cessation counseling and flu shots.
Local employers can utilize MedExpress for a host of occupational health services for their
employees including workers’ compensation and injury care, pre- and ongoing employment
screenings, physicals and regulatory exams.

June BREAKFAST Meeting
Tuesday, June 23, 2015 - 8:00am to 9:00am
It was suggested that the GRC hold a breakfast meeting to accommodate the schedules
of those who cannot break free and join us for the regular 12noon luncheon meetings.
Two breakfast meetings were added to the 2015 GRC Calendar. The first morning
meeting will be held June 23rd. Details regarding guest speaker, location and cost are
being confirmed and information will be emailed to the membership shortly.
GRC Has Something For Everyone
The GRC Board Members and I take pride in providing quality services to our members and community. As we continue to grow and expand
our service area, keeping true to our mission statement of providing personal service still rings loud and clear, although challenging at times.
Your calls and emails are answered by me, hopefully in a timely fashion. I love the days that get me out of the office and allow me to visit
your places of business. A goal of mine for the new year was to make more personal visits to see how you are doing and where you may
need assistance. If I haven’t visited with you so far this year, I will certainly try to do so during the second half.
Our 2015 Calendar of Events was set long before the year started and so far we have accomplished our events and goals for the first half of
the year, with many events and activities remaining for the second half of the year. In addition, we have added some new things to the
calendar when we see the need and occasions to accommodate members.
The “Pink Truck” mobile boutique, The Vintage Valet, LLC. visited the GRC office last week with a parking lot, networking, shopping event.
The weather wasn’t in our favor to relax outside, but none the less, we enjoyed a nice afternoon with those who stopped by. Another Pink
Truck event will be scheduled later in the summer.
We were approached by GRC member, Cleanse Pittsburgh about doing a Lunch & Learn, and so we scheduled one at the GRC office on
Tuesday, June 4th. There is no charge to attend, but seating is limited to six attendees. See additional details in the advertisement on page
10 of this newsletter. RSVP by calling 724-929-3329.
The interest in a group that will meet weekly to walk, run or stroll along the Yough Trail was generated by a few members, and so, just like
that we formed an ongoing event that will take place each Thursday during the summer. See details for the Power Trekkers group on page
11 of this newsletter.
I’m working on a “shred” event for later in June. Community residents and members will be able to bring a box or two of documents, receipts,
tax information and other household paper documents to the GRC parking lot for proper disposal and shredding. Details coming shortly.
Another fun Paint and Sip, with an interesting twist is planned with GRC member, Off the Wall Arts for July 22nd. Watch for details. Our
annual Mini Golf Tournament will be held in August, and we’ll round out the year with another breakfast meeting and monthly luncheons. And
hopefully meet our goal of another education workshop in the fall.
Annual events that remain on the calendar include August Fun Fest, Annual Softball Showdown, Fall Classic Golf Outing, Ladies Night Out,
Christmas Celebration and our members only Christmas Party.
In addition to our own events, we will attend upcoming member events, many which are detailed in this newsletter. The best way to keep in
the loop with everything going on at the GRC is to read this monthly newsletter, and weekly email updates, follow us on Twitter, like us on
Facebook, and visit our website. The links to these sites are included in this newsletter.
I hope you find something of interest on our schedule of events and plan to attend. Involvement with fellow members is great for networking,

Mon Valley Refuse Disposal Authority to Host “Recycling Celebration”
Did you know that Pennsylvania made recycling the law in July 1988 with Act 101, the Municipal Waste Planning,
Recycling and Waste Reduction Act? Pennsylvania is the largest state in the nation to require recycling. To help
businesses in Monessen and North Belle Vernon comply with the law and also save money on their waste removal
expenses, the Mon Valley Refuse Disposal Authority will host a “Recycling Celebration” on Thursday, June 4 th from 6-8
PM at the Monessen Municipal Complex, 1 Wendell Ramey Lane in Monessen.
Recycling provides a range of environmental and economic benefits to our communities that the alternatives, landfilling
and incineration simply do not provide. Manufacturing with recycled materials saves energy and water and produces
less air and water pollution than manufacturing with virgin materials. It takes 95% less energy to recycle aluminum than
it does to make it from raw materials. Making recycled steel saves 60%, recycled newspapers 40%, recycled plastics
70%, and recycled glass 40%, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Many businesses have demonstrated that recycling can actually lower their overall cost of solid waste management.
Recycling relieves pressure on dwindling natural resources and places the responsibility on this generation to save our
resources for our children. Recycling is one of the few environmental actions that every single American can participate
in and feel good about.
For information on what’s happening with recycling for businesses in Monessen and North Belle Vernon please plan on
attending our Recycling Celebration. Speakers at the event include Sharon Sivtek from the Department of
Environmental Protection, Ellen Keefe from Westmoreland Cleanways, Erika Deyarmin from Waste Management and
Rob Hornack from Mon Valley Refuse Disposal Authority.
These speakers will discuss recycling in the business environment. Recycle containers will be available to take with
you so you can put your plan into effect right away. Light refreshments will be served. Please contact the Mon Valley

Local Health Care Organizations Partner To Offer Behavioral Health Series
Monongahela Valley Hospital (MVH) and Southwestern Pennsylvania Human Services, Inc. (SPHS) are partnering to
offer a three-part mental wellness series that can be an invaluable resource for anyone who finds their lives spinning out
of control.
The free sessions, which will be held in MVH’s Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center, begin on Thursday,
June 4, with “Turning Tragedy Into Triumph: A Survivor’s Perspective.” The program will feature Earl Granville, a retired
Army staff sergeant and wounded warrior who advocates suicide prevention. Mr. Granville and his twin brother, Joseph,
were brothers in arms too. In 2007, Earl deployed with the 1/109th Infantry Regiment to Afghanistan where he lost his left
leg to a roadside bomb. Joseph took his brother’s injury, and the news that his own deployment to Iraq was rescinded,
very hard. In 2010, Joseph took his own life. “The signs were there. I just didn’t realize they were signs until he left,” said
Earl Granville.
The program will begin at 6 p.m. Parking is free and light refreshments will be served.
The series will continue on Thursday, Sept. 17, when Oscar Urrea, M.D., a psychiatrist affiliated with MVH and
Psychiatric Care Systems, will discuss “When It’s Time To Seek Help: A Clinical Perspective.”
The third program will be held on Thursday, Nov. 5. “Resources and Support: A Community Perspective” will feature a
panel discussion. Panelists include: Mark Freado, M.A., Reclaiming Youth International; along with Ravindranath Kolli,
M.D., and Cheryld Emala, MSW, LCSW, from SPHS Behavioral Health.

Volunteers Needed for NBV Park Project
Park coordinator, RJ Sokol has made an appeal for any volunteers that wish to help with the Park Project in North Belle
Vernon. We welcome any and all volunteers that wish to contribute including clubs & individuals.
The tasks that volunteers will be doing could range anywhere from painting fence poles, using a shovel or wheelbarrow,
cutting fence ties, cleaning up and keeping the work site safe, helping to assemble new playground equipment and/or
other general labor work suited to your abilities. Volunteers will be asked to sign in and out so to keep track of your
hours of service to your community.
There is also a need for anyone willing to volunteer their backhoes, trucks and specialty tools such as jackhammers and
torches. If you are a plumber, roofer, or carpenter, contributing some of your time and skills would be very much
appreciated.
The volunteers are not limited to North Belle Vernon residents as the park is going to be open to the entire Valley to
enjoy once finished.

volunteer anytime this summer. This is a great team volunteer project for businesses, organizations and groups.
Summer Sports Camps at WCCC
Summer sports camps for children will be offered at Westmoreland County Community College, Youngwood campus,
beginning Monday, June 8.
Classes are offered for boys and girls, unless otherwise indicated, in baseball, basketball, bowling, golf and volleyball.

Volleyball camps – advanced, ages 12 through 16, June 15 – 19 or June 22 – 26

Baseball camp, ages 7 through 12, June 8 – 12

The camps will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., except volleyball camp for beginners, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; volleyball,
advanced (June 15-19) 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.; and the bowling camp which will run from 9 a.m. to noon.
The camps will be taught by experienced coaches and include video analysis as part of the instruction.
Tuition and material fees range from $90 to $195, depending on the camp, for Westmoreland County students. Out-ofcounty participants will be charged double tuition. The cost includes daily lunch for full day camps, T-shirts, instruction,
and for the golf camp, driving range and greens fees.

New Partner at Northwood Realty Service 201 Associates
Dionne Malush, ranked one of the top residential real estate agents in Pittsburgh, is a new partner with Northwood

Malush previously was affiliated with RE/MAX where she was the #9 agent in Western PA and in the top 1% of Coldwell
Banker Pittsburgh. She has also been the No. 1 agent in the Mon Valley area since 2009 with numbers and transactions

Women Only Pistol Course
Augie Malekovich, a NRA instructor will be teaching a women only class to shoot a pistol course at the Rostraver
Sportsmen & Conservation Club on Saturday, June 20th. The class will begin at 9:00 am and go to 1:00 pm. Class size
is limited to 20 participants. Cost for the one day class is $60 and you must preregister by sending a deposit of $20 to

Giving, Attendance Break Records at Monongahela Valley Hospital’s 27th Gala
Monongahela Valley Hospital’s 27th Annual Gala guests enjoyed a theme inspired by Ben Stiller’s “A Night at the Museum,” as they
mingled with gargantuan dinosaur replicas, interacted with costumed actors, and perused world-famous artwork and an Egyptianthemed exhibit.
The event at the Westin Convention Center and Hotel in Pittsburgh on May 16 also honored the Hospital’s Dimensions in
Performance awardees. During the program, the Hospital received a national designation.
More than 600 attendees dressed to the nines filled the sprawling, elegant Allegheny Ballroom to raise a record-breaking $147,600,
according to Sara Schumacher, vice president of Fund Development for MVH. The money will be used to fund MVH’s new Breast
Care Center.
Top sponsors for the evening included The Curators: Amedisys Home Health and Hospice, Doctors First, Inc. and Unidine; The TRex: Limbach Company LLC; and The Cleopatras: Allegheny Health Network, Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy Associates, Inc.
(OSPTA), Range Resources and UPMC Health Plan. The Hospital gratefully acknowledged the extensive list of sponsors in the
evening’s program.
The event, which was sponsored by the Mon-Vale Health Resources Fund Development Committee and MVH’s Office of Fund
Development, celebrated four exemplary individuals for their commitment to excellence with Dimensions in Performance Awards.
These awards honor the multi-dimensional talents of special friends, benefactors and members of the health care family who have
distinguished themselves in the areas of philanthropy, medicine, volunteerism and civic well-being.
Tom Simon, owner of Howard Hanna Simon Real Estate Services,
received the Rose Award for Dimensions in Philanthropy. Mr. Simon
helped establish the Free Care Fund at MVH to provide medical care
to children regardless of insurance or their families’ ability to pay. He
has raised more than $131,000 for the Hospital’s Free Care Fund.
This award recognizes members of the community for their
benevolence and dedication to the enhancement of quality health
care.
Paul N. Cervone, M.D., a well-known obstetrician/gynecologist at
MVH’s Valley Women’s Health, received the Sickman-Levin Award for
Dimensions in Medicine. Dr. Cervone is also a Colonel with the 28th
Infantry Division of the Pennsylvania National Guard, where he served
in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. He holds many leadership roles at
MVH including co-chairman of the Hospital’s Emergency and Disaster
Planning Committee, where he helps define and direct the emergency
preparedness for the hospital. This award honors outstanding
physicians who contribute to health care in the mid-Monongahela Valley.
Lois C. Powala, a retired vice president from National City Bank, received the Gibbons Award for Dimensions in Community Service.
Mrs. Powala traded an office for volunteer opportunities with MVH, providing community outreach with senior hospital leaders and
physicians. This award honors those who are dedicated to the health, social and civic needs of area residents and help to improve the
quality of life.
Sarah L. Wells, an active member of the Auxiliary of Mon-Vale Resources, Inc. for 47 years, received the Rossomme Award for
Dimensions in Volunteer Service. She is the longest-serving active member of the Auxiliary. She serves as the chairwoman of the Gift
and Memorial Fund and works tirelessly in the Hospital’s Gift Shop. This award recognizes people who give of their time and talents in
volunteer service to the health system.
During the evening, David Bromall, Healthgrades vice president of Quality Solutions, recognized the Hospital for being named among
the top 5 percent in the nation for the Healthgrades ® Outstanding Patient Experience Award™. Healthgrades is the leading online
resource that helps consumers search, evaluate, compare and connect with physicians and hospitals.
“Last year when MVH received the Healthgrades’ Outstanding Patient Experience Award for the second consecutive year, it was an
honor,” said President and CEO Louis J. Panza, after receiving the award. “However, receiving this award three years in a row, which
places us among the top 5 percent of hospitals in the country, is truly an accomplishment. I accept this award on behalf of all of our
employees, physicians, board and volunteers who contribute to the patient experience every patient, every day, every way.”
Gala 27 began with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. “A Night at the Museum” concluded with photo
booths, a coffee bar and a premiere variety dance band, Cityscape. Guests danced until midnight.

Daycare & Learning Center is located at 600 Donner Avenue
Monessen.
Kidz Kingdom, is owned by Tamera Boozer and has been
licensed and opened in Monessen since January, but her two
other Pittsburgh locations have been in operation for several
years. Kidz Kingdom Daycare & Learning Center is currently
enrolling infants and children up to 13 years of age. Before
and school care is available, with bus transportation to
Monessen Elementary Center. The center has extended
hours of operation to help accommodate working parents and
is open from 6am to 9pm. For more information, contact the

Chef Christine Somales of The Vintage Valley and Off The Wall Arts are teaming up to bring you a series of delicious
decorating and cooking classes. The first of which is Decorating Gobs. Learn the artistic techniques to create beautiful
gobs for your special occasion. This is a "No Baking" hands on decorating class. Each person will take home 6
beautifully decorated gobs, in 3 different flavors. Chocolate Marshmallow, Red Velvet Cream Cheese, Lemon Zest
Cheesecake.
All supplies are provided. $30 per person includes your instruction, all supplies, 6 decorated gobs, and a gift and coupon
