Classical architectural forms, like columns, were used often in George Washington’s designs for Mount Vernon. The fluted column base on this round dining table echoes the fluted pilasters that frame the Palladian doorways in the west parlor, which Washington at one time considered “the best place in my House.” The wood paneling and carved details, painted a striking Prussian blue, created a beautiful and comfortable space for Washington and his family to receive guests, read, and play games. This desk with eight legs is a modern adaptation of the desk George Washington used during the first two years of his presidency in Federal Hall in New York City. The elongated form provided ample space for his voluminous correspondence and record-keeping. The expense of elaborate and luxurious upholstery meant sofas were only available to the wealthy, thus making them to a status symbol for the elite. George Washington owned two, one covered in brown leather and used in the central passage, and the other covered in blue silk damask and used in the west parlor, both at Mount Vernon.
