METRO Jinjiang Cash & Carry Co. Ltd
President
Our range of fresh products is another of
our special strengths – from fresh meats,
delicatessen and dairy products to fruit
and vegetables. Efficient logistics and
group-wide, standardized quality assurance systems guarantee consistent high
quality, diversity and freshness on a
daily basis.
What is your personal and business background?
I was born in Germany in 1961 and studied
Sinology and Economics. I came into contact
with China more than 20 years ago, and have
witnessed the rapid development of this
country. I have been working for METRO for 8
years, first in Japan and then moving back to
China about 3 years ago.
As METRO always attaches great importance to food safety, we are proud to be
the first wholesale chain store in China to
get the HACCP Certificate, and showcase
our strength in food safety management.
METRO was established in China in 1995, creating a joint venture with Jinjiang Group to
create METRO Jinjiang Cash & Carry Co. Ltd. In
1996, the first store was opened in Shanghai
which introduced a brand-new business concept
to China. Since then, METRO China has grown
and developed a strong network of 37 stores
which we have today.
What are your aims and hopes for
the future?
How long has METRO been active in China?
Have there been any major shifts in
strategy?
Member Mix
METRO has been active in China for over 12
years. We’re dedicated to serving professional
customers and have adapted to the Chinese
market while preserving our core competencies
built up internationally. We have learned that
food safety and quality are increasingly important, and thus regard them as one of our strategic priorities.
adapt our products carefully to suit each
individual region.
> In Brief
Year of Foundation: 1995
HQ (Location): Shanghai
Main Business: Retail & Wholesale
Number of Employees: over 8,300
Revenue: RMB 9.52bn (2007, net)
How did METRO choose in which cities to
open stores?
So far METRO runs 37 stores in 31 cities across the country and serves
3m professional customers. We chose our locations based on a detailed
analysis of how to satisfy and to serve our local customers’ needs.
What has been your strategy in terms of localization?
“Customer First” has always been our principle, thus our strategy of
localization is for the purpose of serving our customers’ needs.
Chinese staff account for 95% of METRO China’S headquarters. Among
37 store managers, most of them are local Chinese. Moreover, METRO
established the House of Training in Shanghai in 2004, to systematically
train METRO’s staff, and customers.
Over 90% of METRO’s products are sourced from China. Additionally,
METRO China has developed an agricultural sourcing base where we work
together with farmers and producers to reach higher standards of quality
and packaging.
METRO is, as always, highly confident of
the potential of the Chinese market.
As the leading wholesaler for HoReCa
and institutions, METRO will continue to
provide customized product lines supported by exemplary quality and hygiene
standards, and will strengthen further
the network of stores throughout the
country.
Who are your main competitors?
Do you see this changing in the
future?
As METRO Cash & Carry has a very unique
concept and business model, we do
neither directly compete with the traditional delivery wholesale nor with hypermarkets. In other words, we
operate in a very specialized and focused niche.
Any tips for doing business in China?
We have experienced significant differences within China concerning the
consumption and living habits of people. China is not a uniform, homogeneous market. Therefore, we are offering an assortment that is geared
to the specific needs of the customers in the different regions. To ensure
this, we are buying approximately 90% of our goods range in China from
domestic producers and suppliers. Moreover, we are relying on the performance of our local employees for the operation and management of our
markets. Nearly all of our 8,300 employees are from China.
On a more personal note, do you enjoy living in China? What are
your impressions of the country and its people?
Definitely yes! Friendly people, delicious food, diverse cultures and
beautiful scenery all make living in China a great pleasure.
What is your competitive advantage in China?
What are the most valuable things you have learned from
working and living in China?
A special feature of our concept is that professional customers can
get everything they need at METRO Cash & Carry, where they find up
to 20,000 food and non-food articles under one single roof. The range
includes regional products as well as international specialties, and we
I learned to successfully adapt myself in a constantly changing environment- in China we do get many surprises inside and outside of the
business. With an open-minded, flexible and positive attitude, you can
achieve everything here.

Green Lake Hotel Kunming
Senior Sales Manager Europe & USA
In 2007 and 2008, our hotel was awarded
“Best Business Hotel” by Forbes magazine. It has also been awarded “Most
welcoming business hotel in Southwest
China 2008.” Receiving these awards, I
am sure that a number of facts made a
contribution. Not only are we the only
hotel with a five star rating in Kunming
offering cuisine by a genuine French chef,
but we also provide excellent customer
care thanks my Swiss colleague and the
24-hour British-style butler service.
What is your personal and business
background?
After I got my degree in Economics and
Business Administration, I worked as a
Management Assistant and later on as
Manager of a department store for over
six years. Afterwards I joined IBM and
worked as an Accounting Manager, Sales
Manager and Global Accounting Manager
for more than 30 years.
After the merger of the IBM personal
computer division with the Chinese
company Lenovo, the headquarters
moved to Beijing and I moved along. I
have been married to a former Controlling Manager of the Bank of China for ten
years now.
How did you adapt to life in China,
did you face any personal or business difficulties?
Member Mix
For the last 10 years, I have learned to
adopt my expectations to reality, especially during the 3 to 4 weeks of holiday
each year. Looking back, I would say
that I luckily have not been confronted
by any extreme difficulties.
Will the Olympic Games affect your
business?

Company Name: Green Lake Hotel
Year of Foundation: 1956
Number of Employees: 620
Number of Rooms: 302
Guests in 2007: 52,263
Sales/Revenue: RMB 86m
Please tell us about the characteristics of Kunming. Why should
one visit this town?
Kunming is the capital of Yunnan Province and the biggest city in the
southwestern China. Situated on a plateau, the altitude of the city
center is at almost 2,000m and the city is surrounded by mountain
ranges. To the south there is Dianchi Lake. Kunming is known to many
Chinese as “Spring City” or “Flower City” – a name it was given because
it is free from torrid heat in summer and bitter cold in winter. Sunshine
is abundant, with a comforting spring climate the whole year.
There are more than 25 minorities living in the Kunming area at present,
providing for an interesting look into another facet of China. Their
history and lifestyle is displayed in the Minority Village with historic
buildings and shows displaying the tradition of the minorities the whole
day. Additionally, there are beautiful scenic spots like the Stone Forest
and the Dianchi Lake.
Tell us about the history and heritage of Green Lake Hotel:
Although founded as late as 1956, based on textual research, the area
around the Green Lake Hotel has a history of hundreds of years. It used
to be the royal residence at the end of the Ming and beginning of the
Qing Dynasty. It thus shares a long history with the royal family.
What are the individual characteristics of your hotel?
Green Lake Hotel is located on the eastern shore of the Green Lake in
the city center. It is a thirty minute ride from the airport. Within a ten
June - July 2008 | 58
minute walk you can reach the central
business district and the downtown area
of Kunming. The hotel has two wings and
one big square in front of the lake.
We know that a lot of international business guests from foreign countries are
visiting China to attend the Olympic
Games. They will use the opportunity to
take a round trip to see more than just
Beijing. Kunming is the portal to China’s
Southwest. From a traveler’s point of
view, Kunming is the base for visiting places like Xishuangban’na, Dali and
Lijiang that no one should leave aside
during a visit to China.
Can you identify any differences in
the hotel business in China compared to Europe?
The key difference would be in a more relaxed manner of getting
things done, especially in China’s Southwest. I would also note that
people here are more service oriented. Compared to European hotels,
the ability to provide professional service is increasing. Variable
service fulfillment in less time is thus one of the main advantages of
Chinese hotels compared to their European counterparts. Of course,
this depends highly on the number of qualified staff and their experience.
Are there different expectations of Chinese customers compared to Western?
Yes, there are. In general, customers from China are more flexible
if some detailed arrangements are not according to their wishes.
Chinese customers often do not keep the time frames for confirmed
reservations. This sometimes causes problems for following reservations.
What is your favorite thing about living in China?
The attitude of Chinese people to everyday life! They mostly hold
an optimistic attitude, doing everything with a smile on their faces
from morning until night. Even when problems arise, people try to
control themselves and do not show their feelings to others. If you
are on your way to work or even during the course of each day, the
difference between the facial expressions of Chinese and Germans is
very obvious.

Thomas Buschmann
Meet the Member
Thomas Buschmann is the Speaker
of the MAN House Beijing. After
studying economics and sinology in
Hamburg, he joined MAN Ferrostaal
in Essen and has worked in China
since his first assignment in Shanghai in 1997. He has been in charge
of the MAN Ferrostaal Beijing operation since 1999. Living in China
with his family of 4, he is a passionate supporter of the Shanghai
and Beijing jazz scenes.
1. Could you briefly describe
MAN’s fields of activity?
MAN AG’s 4 core companies provide
commercial vehicles (MAN Nutzfahrzeuge), diesel engines for ships
and power generation (MAN Diesel),
compressors and turbines (MAN TURBO) and industrial services (MAN
Ferrostaal).
MAN House Beijing
Speaker
2. What is the connection between these four companies?
Most of our products and services are transport-related; while three
companies design and manufacture premium machinery, MAN Ferrostaal is in charge of providing the business platform for them. Last
year in June, we opened the first so-called MAN House in Beijing. MAN
Houses, now being established around the world, are our common
centers for internal cooperation and the first point of contact for our
new partners.
3. Why have you decided to become annual sponsor of the AHK?
Member Mix
China is one of MAN’s strategic growth regions. This is reflected in
the new manufacturing projects that we pursue, e.g. MAN TURBO’s
new factory in Changzhou/Jiangsu. You may also know that we seek
to intensify our involvement in the Chinese truck and bus markets.
Not to mention MAN Diesel who have quite a number of cooperations
with Chinese shipyards and engine manufacturers. All of us have been
intensifying our sourcing activities in China. With the sponsorship, we
would like to make our growing commitment to China more visible.
Furthermore, 2008 has two important historic dates for the MAN
Group: it is the 250th anniversary of the group’s earliest origins in
Oberhausen Sterkrade and the 150th anniversary of Rudolf Diesel’s
birthday, who developed the Diesel engine in MAN workshops.
4. What kind of industrial services does MAN Ferrostaal
provide?
The classical job of MAN Ferrostaal is developing and general contracting of industrial plant projects, which has, however, been difficult in
the Chinese market so far. Traditionally, we also represent European
machine-building companies in China and offer sales and after-sales
services through our newly established MAN Ferrostaal Commercial
(Beijing) Co. Ltd.
We have begun our sourcing activities in the Chinese market for industrial plant components, related services and single machines.
Based on our experience in these fields, we additionally offer procurement support services to third parties who wish to set up shop in
China using domestic machinery.

Volkswagen’s Winfried Vahland Receives
Top Management Award
As the only international recipient within the group awarded the
“Top 10 Management Award“ honor from the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in Beijing on 25th February 2008,
Dr. Winfried Vahland, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group China,
was honored as one of the best managers in China in the year 2007.
The prize, which is awarded in 10 categories, was created in cooperation with UNESCO as one of the most important honors bestowed by
the CPPCC, in the fields of education, science, culture, health, etc.
upon such organizations as the All China Federation of Industry &
Commerce, Beijing University and similar nationally-known organizations. Vahland was honored for his successful leadership at Volkswagen Group since 2005.
Under extraordinarily competitive
conditions, he has led the automaker
back to success with the so-called
“Olympic Program” restructuring plan.
In addition, together with all VW’s
partner companies, he set a driving
policy toward ecologically sustainable growth at VW. The company has
committed to reducing energy use
and emissions for the fleet of vehicles
sold by Shanghai Volkswagen and FAW
Volkswagen in China by 20% by the
year 2010.
Another factor in the award was Volkswagen’s participation as a
sponsor of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. As an automotive partner,
VW is actively supporting the idea of “green and high-tech Games for
all the people.” More than 6,000 vehicles and additional mobility solutions and social initiatives regarding the environment and education
have been started within this framework.

Beijing IT Day
Building on the success of the
first Shanghai IT day in November 2007, eight European companies extended an open invitation
to the first “Beijing IT Day on 5th
March.” The event was organized
under the direction of IBB and
I&C Technology.
The IT-Day series was initiated
by eight European IT-focused
companies, like IBB, founded by
Niels-Uwe Behrens in 2000. The
goal of the IT-Day model is to
quickly share valuable information with all participants about
the latest IT topics, IT challenges and new IT ideas. Lectures are focused on timely and
relevant topics in IT
security, protection
of intellectual property and information
about the legal framework in China. Network
infrastructure, with a
special emphasis on
the practical side, was
also a topic of great
interest.
The Capital Club gave the Beijing
Day a special touch and encouraged the participants to take
time for serious face-to-face
talks. Support from the German
Chamber of Commerce was much
appreciated. The Beijing IT Day

plans. Among them were Ministry of Construction Senior Division Chief Mr. Han Aixing, Mr.
Wang Bohai, Director of Shanghai’s Energy Bureau, and Mr. Pan
Yanping, Director of the Shanghai
Building Materials Quality Control
Center.
Presentations at the opening
covered energy savings in the
construction industry in South
and East China and quality control
for thermal insulation installations in that region. Mr. Uwe
Muenchow, the General Manager
of Baumit Shanghai, and German
architect Peter Femboeck introduced the so-called “passive
house” concept, which is key to
the future of housing and provides comfort in both winter and
summer with minimal energy use.
The year 2008 will see the organization of a series of seminars on
the techniques of ETICS installation and common quality control
problems. Rising fuel costs and
global warming have made efficient insulation increasingly
important in China. The better a
building’s insulation is, the less
energy is needed for heating and
air conditioning. ETICS has a
proven solution to achieve this,
but of nearly 3,000 manufacturers
currently producing in China, only
a handful can meet international
quality standards.

body-, paint- and an assembly-shop. 1,200 of the new plant’s employees were trained at Shanghai Volkswagen’s plants in Anting/Shanghai.
The new plant is part of the JV’s strategy to increase capacity as the
previous 95% of the existing capacity of about one million vehicles
was already utilized. The plant will support Volkswagen Group’s goal
to sell more than one million vehicles in 2008 and keep its growth
momentum in the coming years. The site in Nanjing is number 49 to
join the worldwide production network of the Volkswagen Group.

The reason for this strange behavior was to entertain friends of the
bikers at the Sunshine House, a
home for around 25 mentally-challenged children. In the process, they
brought toys, chocolates, drinks and
other gifts - all sponsored by the
bikers and with kind support from Carrefour and Coca-Cola.
The children were very excited, but not
too surprised either as the bikers had
visited them in late 2006 for a Saint
Nicolas ride; on that occasion dressed
in red with bushy beards as Santa Claus.
For the rest of the afternoon, the bikers
played ball and racket games, and were
thoroughly beaten by their Chinese opponents at table tennis and badminton.
After lots of smiles and laughter, the
bikers handed over some pictures from
the Saint Nicolas ride as another happy
memory to reflect upon. Next year the
team will do the same again with the
pictures from this ride.

the First Traditional German
Bakery in Shanghai. At school,
the subject "From the grain to
the bread" was taught, making
the visit at the ABENDBROT
bakery a very good supplement
to classroom theory. All the children were eager to see and touch
the real thing. Horst, the master
baker, explained the entire baking
process. After one hour, all questions were answered and the bus
headed back to school. Each child
could take home a roll made fresh
on the spot.

Dr. Dirk Lupberger Named General
Manager of Plumbohm Corporate

It was with great pleasure earlier this year that Dr. Dirk Lupberger

corporate venture capital, as CEO and President for Siemens Venture
Capital.

service provider and to complement its Munich-based corporate
finance consultancy.

HAWE Hydraulik 10th Anniversary
Ingencis Introduces Charter
10 years have passed since HAWE Hydraulik, a Bavarian family owned
mid-sized company, came to China. On 29th May 2008, HAWE China
celebrated its 10th year anniversary in the Grand Hyatt Shanghai. Subsidiaries and distributors of HAWE Group from more than 25 countries
joined the festivities.
By introducing the Ingenics Charter, Ingenics created a template
for an approach to work. The overall aim is to instil, throughout
the company, an intrinsic sense of ‘lean working’ to raise productivity, flexibility and standards along the whole company value chain.
The Ingenics Charter forms the backbone of its “production system,”
enabling us to shape in-house services and guarantee customers
methodical, customized project management.
Beginning with a small 4 person small office in Pudong, none of HAWE
employees could have imagined that the Chinese market would one
day become the largest single country-market outside of Germany.
Today, with 80 employees, over 8000m2 facilities and nearly 500m
annual turn-over, HAWE China serves customers not only in China but
also in whole Asia-Pacific.
In 2008, HAWE China will complete a new state of the art assemblyline of hydraulic aggregate for wind power application in Waigaoqiao,
Shanghai, in order to fulfill the sustaining growth of green energy
demand in China and Asia-pacific region.

Barkawi Management Consultants Voted
Top Logistics Consulting Company
In a study conducted by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Managementforschung (German Institute for Management Research), Prof. Dietmar
Fink asked 264 managers to rank the most prestigious consulting firms
according to their consulting competence. In the field of logistics,
Barkawi garnered 403 of 500 possible competence points.
“In certain specialized fields, the smaller firms have the power to
outdo established market leaders,” notes Fink of his survey’s findings. Karim Barkawi, the founder of Barkawi Management Consultants,
says, “We see ourselves as a permanent partner. We don't leave our
customers alone with a concept, but accompany them throughout the
whole process of implementation. Beyond that, our focus on logistics
issues gives us a strong note of authority. We don't need a very long
adjustment period because this is our industry, too. The combination
of those two points is the basis of our success — and something our
clients appreciate.”
