December 6, 2015 From Our Pastor…
Second Sunday of Advent December 6, 2015 Parish Office: 402-564-7151; St. Bon’s Grade School: 402-564-7153 From Our Pastor… In this season of joy and anticipation, we wait in expectation for the greatest gift given (and received)--Jesus Christ. At St. Bon’s, Jesus has come early! New figures for indoor and outdoor nativity scenes recently arrived. Some history: St. Francis of Assisi created the first nativity scene in 1223 to nurture respect for Christ and his birth, a fact we learn from Saint Bonaventure in his biography of St. Francis. The former indoor statues have seen better days. They are dated, color-faded and chipped. We will repurpose the figures in some creative way in the future. The new indoor statues look very nice in the beautiful stable Paul Dohmen built many years ago. Outdoor figures also were purchased. A stable was needed. Jesus was born in a stable, and the structure also would protect the models from the elements. In visiting the Holy Land, I noticed that wood is scarce, but stone is abundant. In Bethlehem, I was privileged to kneel at the very spot Jesus was born. Indeed, it was a stable--a place for sheep and other animals to eat and lodge; but this was a cave-like structure. To this end, I had some friends of mine construct a cave. This nativity structure is displayed on the South side of the church facing 17th Street to remind passersby that Jesus is the reason for the season. Shortly after I arrived at Saint Bon's, Phyl Zabawa approached me with the desire to purchase something visible to parishioners in honor of her late husband, Tony. We decided on the nativity sets, and with great joy we share them with everyone. I felt like a child when the sets arrived, anxious to see what they looked like in real life. I am very thankful for these precious gifts! I invite you and your family to take some time during this Advent season to view our nativity scenes up close and to pray that all people draw closer to Jesus. And a final note: baby Jesus will be placed in the crèche on Christmas Eve. Happy Advent! God’s blessings, ST. BONAVENTURE COLUMBUS, NE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION Masses will be Monday, December 7 (Anticipatory): 5:00p.m. (Spanish), and 7:00p.m. Tuesday, December 8: 6:30 & 8:15a.m.; 12:10 & 5:30p.m. How can we show others the mercy of God? We say that God is compassionate, but we ignore the poor. We say that God loves us and has mercy on us, but we hold grudges against our friends. Our actions need to authentically reflect God's mercy. Go to the USCCB website, www.usccb.org or the Archdiocese of Omaha website www.archomaha.org to learn more about the Jubilee Year of Mercy. St. Bon’s will celebrating in different ways throughout the year and will be posting information in the bulletin. CALENDAR: Upcoming Events RELIGIOUS CHRISTMAS CARDS AVAILABLE The Knights of Columbus Council #938 will be selling beautiful religious Christmas cards in the entryway of church after all the Masses on December 6. SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT Today we continue the "joyful expectation" of the birth of Christ in history, the present, and the future. Today we hear the words of John the Baptist calling people of his time to repentance. We are called to protect each other's dignity and share of our abundance with others so that each may live a life that is centered on helping others. Prepare the way! EXTRAORDINARYJUBILEE OF MERCY Opening the Doors of Mercy Saint Cecilia’s Cathedral December 13, 7:30 p.m. For this Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, proclaimed by Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, Archbishop Lucas has designated St. Cecilia’s Cathedral, the mother-church of the Archdiocese, as the local pilgrimage site. As such, on November 8, Fr. Michael Gutgsell, Rector of St. Cecilia’s Cathedral, delegated by Archbishop Lucas, sealed the doors of the Cathedral in a symbolic gesture of unity with Pope Francis and the Universal Church. As the doors of St. John Lateran, the Cathedral Church of the Bishop of Rome, were sealed, so too were our doors, awaiting the day of December 13, 2015, 7:30 p.m. when Archbishop Lucas, joined by the faithful from throughout the Archdiocese, will join together in an evening service of Solemn Vespers and will unseal for this Archdiocese the Doors of Mercy, leading us to encounter the face of Jesus, who as Pope Francis declared in his announcement of the Holy Year, is the Face of the Father’s mercy. Thus will begin a unique year-long encounter with our Merciful Lord. If you are interested in attending, please call Belinda Keiter, 402-564-7151.
