Letter From Your Executive Committee
The University of Toronto Students’ Union represents
all 47,000 full-time undergraduate and professional
faculty students at UofT’s St. George and Mississauga
campuses. We work to build community on campus
and ensure you have the best possible student
experience while you are here.
Throughout the year, we host awesome
events like concerts, club nights, exam
destressors, speaker series and much
more! We know that university is expensive, and we work to ensure that all of
our events are free or low-cost while also
providing cost-saving services like the
cheapest printing on campus, discounted
sports and entertainment tickets, and
one of the best Health & Dental Plans
in the country.
This year, we’ve made a strong commitment to improving our services and
events; we’re hosting a bigger and better
UTSU Fest, ramping up the I <3 the Blues
campaign to support Varsity athletes,
expanding the hours of our food bank, increasing clubs funding and finding new
ways to support our hundreds of campus
clubs. We look forward to hearing from
you throughout the year about how we
can continue to serve you better.
3
But your Students’ Union does much
more than coordinate awesome events
and services to save you money. Over
the years we’ve found that students
united across the university, throughout the GTA, across the province and
even across Canada, have the power to
effect change (see page 7 for some victories we’ve won by working together).
This year, get involved in campaigns to
improve mental health resources at UofT;
lobby for discounted transit for students
across the GTA; fight illegal incidental
fees charged to students; and combat all
forms of oppression and discrimination
to ensure our campus is a safe space for
everyone.
We’re happy to provide this handbook
as a resource for you to learn about UTSU
events, campaigns and services, and as
an introduction to the rest of our campus
community. Throughout these pages,
you’ll find information about the work
that we do and how you can be a part
of it. Join a Commission, speak to a
board member or drop by our office. It’s
YOUR Students’ Union – get involved,
and together we’ll ensure an incredible
university experience for all.

Meet Your Executives
President Munib Sajjad
president@utsu.ca | 416-978-4911 ext. 223
My name is Munib Sajjad and I am the President for
your Students Union, the UTSU. As we embark on this
school year, we will be facing the highest tuition fees in
Canada. I know what potential we have when we work
together as students. That’s why my top priority is to
mobilize and begin the groundwork to build a strong
student movement. Come by our office or check out our
website to see the great campaigns, events and services
your students union provides for you!
Vice-President University Affairs Agnes So
vpua@utsu.ca | 416-978-4911 ext. 230
Hello to all fellow students, my name is Agnes and
I’m your Vice-President University Affairs. I’m really
excited for the coming year! My goal is to provide
a positive school experience to you all. This is your
Students’ Union and I’m thrilled to get more of you
involved and make sure that you know your rights!
Together we can build a more united campus and fight
for a better post-secondary education.
Vice-President Equity Yolen Bollo-Kamara
vpequity@utsu.ca | 416-978-4911 ext. 237
I’m proud of the diversity at UofT, but it’s impossible
to ignore the fact that the same forms of oppression
– including racism, sexism, classism, homophobia,
transphobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, ableism, and
ageism – that exist within greater society are reproduced
on campus. All members of our community have a right
to live, work and study in a safe environment. As your
Vice-President Equity, I’m committed to responsing to
your concerns and ensuring that equity and accessibility
resources at UofT are working for you. We must work
together to eliminate all forms of discrimination and
build inclusivity within our community.

We know how nerve-wracking it is to start a new
beginning. That’s why one of our main goals is to
assist and to help you to achieve the best possible
university experience. A major way we give back to UofT
is through our abundant services! You can check out
many of them in this handbook. We hope to continue
to expand our services and foster a better connection
with you through an updated website, more clubs’
promotion and more sporting events!
Vice-President Campus Life Onik Khan
vpcampuslife@utsu.ca | 416-978-4911 ext. 234
Hello fellow students, my name is Onik Khan and
I’m your Vice-President Campus Life this year. I’m

get engaged with your campus community throughout
the year. I look forward to enhancing your student life
experience whether it’s with great events, well-resourced
clubs or a successful orientation. I’m passionate about
creating a strong campus community that will ensure
we have a successful school year and the best student
life experiences.

Community Action Commission:
This Commission is responsible for student activism
in the world around us. This is where we fight against
high tuition fees and student debt.
Privatization
of Education
Student
Debt
Get involved with students across the
province and country to fight the privatization and corporatization of education.
Every year there is less public funding
as the government and our university
rely more and more on tuition fees and
corporate funding. This hurts the quality
and accessibility of our education. Students in post-secondary institutions are accruing mortgage-sized debts.
Student debt in Canada has surpassed
$16 billion dollars! Get involved and
fight back!
Pedestrianize
St. George
Fair
Student
Fares
Students have to pay for all sorts of
things at university, and our education
becomes less accessible when we cannot
afford the cost of getting to campus.
Rising transit fees are a huge concern for
students, the majority of whom commute
to campus. Students in this Commission
will unite with students’ unions across
the Greater Toronto Area to fight for
more student discounts.
Let’s shut down St. George Street and
make it pedestrian-friendly! No cars, just
students. At the University of Toronto
there is a lack of communal student
space. By shutting down St. George
Street, we can open it up to students,
activities, and events hosted by your
Students’ Union as well as hundreds of
other student groups across the campus.
This initiative will also make a significant
positive environmental impact in our city.

Academic & Student Rights Commission:
Many students don’t know what their rights are.
To ensure that students are not taken advantage of,
this Commission fights for student rights and does
everything possible to ensure students are aware of
their rights.
Drop Credit
Flat Fees
The Drop Credit policy is an initiative to create a new student-friendly academic policy at the university to give
students a way of repeating a course
with little negative impact to their grade
point average (GPA). Currently, only your
first attempt at a course counts toward
your GPA. Many other universities allow
students a “second chance” at a course
and only count the highest of the two
grades received toward a student’s GPA.
This Commission is working to bring
this policy to UofT.
In 2009, the University of Toronto
lost over $1 billion when the economy
crashed. UofT passed its financial loss
on to students in the Faculty of Arts and
Science by implementing a flat tuition
fee payment policy, forcing students to
pay for five courses even if they only take
three or four. This is a huge barrier to accessible education. Students who do not
take a full course load often do so because
they either cannot afford to pay for a full
course load or have personal circumstances which prevent them from doing
so. We want a fair, per-course tuition fee
policy just like most other universities
across the province and country.
Fighting Illegal
Incidental Fees
Last year, your Students’ Union investigated the incidental fees that you pay
with your tuition fees. Termed ancillary
fees, these fees are costs downloaded
onto students to help pay for services
that are not part of your academic tuition
fees, but for campus services and other
administrative costs. We found that some
fees charged to students were against
government policy. Some of these fees
were removed, but it is up to students in
this Commission to fight illegal incidental fees that the University of Toronto is
charging us.
FACEBOOK.COM/ASRUTSU
The ASR Commission
also pressures the university
to develop new policies
that improve the quality of
our academic careers.

Social Justice & Equity Commission
Join the Social Justice and Equity Commission!
• Organize campaigns and events to build a safe and inclusive campus
• Raise awareness about local, national, and international social
justice issues
• Meet and collaborate with individuals and clubs who are involved
in anti-oppression work and social justice initiatives on campus
The Social Justice and Equity Commission is a space for students to address
issues like ableism, ageism, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, islamophobia,
anti-Semitism, classism, and other forms of oppression, both on campus and within
greater society. It works to develop events and campaigns that focus on creating safer
spaces, developing campus and community dialogue and progressively working
for a more equitable society.

challenging oppression and raising awareness about
equity and social justice issues. In the past, XAO has
included socials, workshops, and exciting guest speakers.
No Means No
Join the campaign to prevent and raise awareness about
sexual violence on campus and in our communities.
Accessibility Audit
Study the (in)accessibility of UofT for students of
different physical and mental abilities and push for
the University to take action.
Say What You Mean
Examine common words and expressions and the
ways in which they can oppress and reinforce negative
stereotypes and structural discrimination.
Mental Health Campaign
Works to break down stigma around mental health
awareness and address gaps in campus services for
students, staff and faculty with mental health concerns.
The Social Justice and Equity Commission works
on a wide range of issues throughout the year. If
you have an equity concern or an idea for a new

Sustainability Commission
The UTSU Sustainability Commission covers a broad
spectrum of events and advocacy, from political issues
on the national scale to internal university issues.
Urban Agriculture
Eco-Collaboration
The world’s globalized food system
has detrimental effects on society. The
prioritization of maximizing profits for
agro-business has caused the destruction
of livelihoods, displacement of peoples
and the devastation of the natural environment. Urban agriculture allows us
to minimize our transport footprint and
makes local food accessible.
The Sustainability Commission plans
to connect groups with each other to
create a community of solidarity, which
will include EcoFest, a week of sustainability-themed events held in partnership
with various groups. Events include:
Help us maintain our urban garden
located on the lawns of the UTSU
building by emailing:
garden@utsu.ca
Meatless Mondays
Raising animals for food can have a
disastrous environmental impact. Factory
farms produce more greenhouse gas
emissions than the entire transportation sector. A tremendous amount of
arable land, water, and energy is used to
produce meat, leading to deforestation,
fresh water depletion, and pollution.
UTSU has endorsed Meatless
Mondays and plans on hosting
more vegan BBQ’s in collaboration
with the Hot Yam!
• Winter Bike Riding Seminar – Bikechain
• Meatless Mondays Movie Screenings

with the Public Water Initiative, successfully lobbied UofT to ban the sale of
bottled water on the St. George campus,
as well as phasing it out at the Mississauga
and Scarborough campuses.

Tarsands
UofT students are concerned about
the pumping of fossil fuels in Northern
Alberta. More than 20 corporations are
operating in tar sand rich lands. This
practice negatively impacts our environment and the indigenous peoples
of Canada.

projects and tar sands expansion

TTC Post-Secondary Student Metropass
UTSU sells the $106 Metropass starting the last five
business days of each month, and continuing into the
following month while supplies last. We accept debit
only. Students can also purchase the Metropass at
most subway stations.
Fair Student Fares
The discounted Post-Secondary Student Metropass came about in 2009 as a result
of your Students’ Union’s Fair Student Fares campaign. Together with students’
unions from across the GTA, we fought and won a discounted Metropass, saving
students thousands of dollars every month.
For the past two years, Toronto City Council has proposed TTC cuts and increased
TTC fares. Two years ago, the Council eliminated part-time students from being
eligible for the discounted Metropass.
Let’s mobilize to
protect student
discounts,
and lobby for fair
student fares.

UTSU Health & Dental Plan
Saving You Money!
All full-time undergraduate and fulltime Toronto School of Theology students
are automatically enrolled in the UTSU
Health & Dental Plan. The plan provides
extended health and dental coverage for
a full twelve months – the benefit year
runs from September 1 to August 31. The
cost is automatically charged to your
ROSI account and appears as a separate
charge on your detailed statement.
Blackout Period
If you are joining the plan for the first
time, or returning from a leave of absence
or part-time studies, your account with
Green Shield Canada will not be activated until UTSU has received a list
of members from the university. This
usually occurs shortly after the add/drop
deadlines have passed in mid-November.
During this period claims cannot be
processed, however, after your account
has been activated you can submit claims
for eligible expenses incurred as of September 1. Please note that dentists who
participate in Green Shield Canada’s
Dental Discount Network are obligated
to submit claims electronically and may
not be able to offer services until the
account is activated.

Sustainability
FOOD
Where our food comes from, how much it costs and who has a say in
our food options are all important student and sustainability issues.
The UTSU is fighting for:
• Affordable food on campus
• Sustainable food on campus
• Student-run food options

Student Rights Commission. Visit our website.
TRANSIT
Accessible and affordable public transit is integral to city and campus
sustainability. The UTSU recognizes the increased need for affordable
and accessible public transit not only in Toronto, but across the GTA.
This year the UTSU will fight for increased student access to public
transit by lobbying for:
• Better TTC discounts
• Cross-city transit discounts for students
• Increased service expansion

Campaign For Mental Health Services
University can be a stressful time in your life.
The rising cost of tuition, the increased burden of student debt, and the
pressure to succeed can all negatively affect your mental health. What’s worse
is that mental health is rarely discussed, frequently ignored and those who are
suffering from mental health issues are often stigmatized in our society.
At the last general meeting of the UTSU, students voted
to create a campaign to address issues of mental health
on campus, focusing on:
• Fighting stigma around mental illness
• Ending discrimination against and dismissal of students
with mental health concerns
• Increasing support and improving resources for students on campus
The UTSU is committed to ending discrimination against and dismissal of students
with mental health concerns, fighting stigma around mental illness and increasing
support and improving mental health resources for students.

Unpaid Internships
It is estimated that across Canada each year over
300,000 students and young workers are illegally
classified as interns, trainees, and non-employees.
Many internships and unpaid training programs create pools of free labour
from which employers directly benefit and profit from, often to the detriment
of students and young workers.
The Ontario Employment Standards Act (ESA) exempts these students
and young workers from its protections, and relies on a complaints-driven
enforcement model that ignores the power imbalances between intern or
trainee and employers.
The UTSU is fighting for the elimination of unpaid
internships in Ontario and across Canada.
We are lobbying for:
• Changes to the ESA that would prohibit all forms of unpaid labour
• A proactive enforcement strategy that targets employers who
exploit unpaid labour
• Data collection that would trace the extent and effects of unpaid
labour which targets students and youth

Association of Part-time
Undergraduate Students (APUS)
Welcome to what we hope will be an exciting and successful year for you
at the University of Toronto. As a member of the Association of Part-time
Undergraduate Students (APUS), you are united with thousands of part-time
students across all three campuses of the University, and across the country
through our national students’ union, the Canadian Federation of Students.
Part-time students who wanted to
improve the undergraduate educational
experience of all part-time students
formed APUS in 1968. APUS is here to
ensure you have access to a full range of
programs, services and resources at the
University. We represent the voices and
needs of part-time students to all levels
of decision-making at the University,
and in government. We also provide
our members with cost-saving services,
advocacy and events, helping to reduce
the barriers of accessing an education.
Our members are diverse, and have
many responsibilities outside of school
including families, jobs and other
personal obligations. This year we will
support our members by continuing to
be a strong advocate on issues such as
access to education, affordable childcare,
accessibility, more evening courses
and student life services. We will also
41
continue to offer a comprehensive health
and dental plan, bursaries and other
services to help lower the cost of your
education.
For over 40 years, APUS has been
a strong voice and helped to build a
community for part-time students at UofT.
We look forward to meeting and working
with all of you to continue this tradition.
