October-May
From our President Alice D’Souza
Having just celebrated a wonderful Rosh Hashanah service and Yom Kippur prepared by the Ritual Committee, we are all full of renewed energy. The music sung by the Humanaires was indeed superb and uplifting.
The New Year sharing of food and conversation was a joy. Amy Eliezer, with the help of several other members, did an outstanding job.
I must make mention of all the wonderful kugel baked by so many talented cooks for Break-the-Fast. Delicious and all so different, just like us.
I can’t believe school has started and summer is over, but not so quick - the heat is still here. Those of us
who traveled far and wide over the summer are home, and in the next month the snowbirds will be returning.
By now you have seen the Program and Education programs that your committees have planned for the year.
We hope you will find them stimulating. This is a reminder that we will be having all our services on Saturdays until February 5, 2016. Many people had told us how difficult it is to drive at night and so we are experimenting with the new times. Your feedback as the year goes on will be welcome.
Our constant request for your help in bringing in new members continues. Remember, if you are happy at
CHJ, someone else will be, too. We will be continuing our food drive for All Faiths Food Bank each month
starting with our Saturday, October 10 service. An e-blast will be sent out before the service to remind you.
Sponsorship of a program or an oneg is a very good way to recognize a birthday, anniversary or other special
occasion. You can sponsor alone or with a friend. It’s a nice thing to do if you can. As a sponsor, you will be
honored by your lighting of the candles.
Mark your calendars for Dr. Suzanne Cunningham Dickie, who will be speaking about The Affordable Care
Act on October 10. The Education Film series presented by Irene Mirkovic will start on October 6 and run for
four consecutive Tuesdays at 2:00 P.M. in Fellowship Hall. Please e-mail or phone in your reservation for one
or all four films to the office. Further information about the films is on page 3 in this issue..
We are all looking forward to good health, happiness and microphones that work all the time.
Shalom,
Alice D’Souza

CHJ EDUCATION SERIES
Welcome to IRENE’S PICS, the fourth four-part series of EXTRAORDINARY HOLOCAUST FILMS.
All films are related to America during or after the Holocaust. Post-film discussion will be
facilitated by Irene Mirkovic, Florida Holocaust Museum Docent and Lifelong Learning Academy Instructor in Holocaust Film Studies.
Four films on Tuesdays in October at 2:00 P.M. on October 6, 13, 20, 27, at UNITY,
3023 Proctor Road, Sarasota.
October 6:
AMERICA AND THE HOLOCAUST – DECEIT AND INDIFFERENCE.
(Documentary 1988, 90 min.) Complex social and political factors shaped America's response to the Holocaust, from "Kristallnacht" through the liberation of the death camps. For a short time, the US had an opportunity to open its doors, but instead erected a bureaucratic maze that prevented most Jewish refugees from entering the country.
October 13: IMAGINARY WITNESS – HOLLYWOOD AND THE HOLOCAUST.
(Documentary 2004, 92 min.) Film directed by Daniel Anker and narrated by Gene Hackman that examines
the treatment of the Holocaust in Hollywood films over a period of sixty years and the impact of the films on
public perception and thinking.
October 20: PAPER CLIPS. (Documentary 2004, 84 min.) About The Paper Clips Project, by middle
school students from the small southeastern Tennessee town of Whitwell, who created a monument for Holocaust victims. It started in 1998 as a simple 8th-grade project to study other cultures, and then evolved into
one gaining worldwide attention.
October 27: VARIAN’S WAR. (Docudrama 2000, approx. 2 hours.) New York editor Varian Fry builds an
underground network to save European artists and intellectuals from Nazi persecution during World War II.
Along with thousands of ordinary citizens, Fry helped to save such notables as Marc Chagall, Heinrich Mann,
Max Ernst, Hannah Arendt and Andre Benton.

We Will Remember Him
Harry S. Scherzer
Harry S. Scherzer, 80, passed away September 1, 2015, after months of medical challenges. He had been a member of CHJ for only a year, but everyone who met him always saw
a smile on his face and heard a joke in every sentence. His commanding presence and voice
were matched by his broad knowledge and biting wit.
He was born and raised in Massachusetts, attended MIT at age 15, received a B.S. in Chemical
and Mechanical Engineering at 19. An air force ROTC member, he then served in the Guided
Missile School, teaching NATO officers the mathematics necessary for guidance technology (pre GPS).
Thereafter, he returned to MIT’s Sloan Foundation for a master’s degree in business.
The father of two (son, Larry of New Jersey, and a deceased daughter), grandfather of four, Harry was married three times. He was divorced twice and widowed after 27 years of marriage to a concert pianist.
He owned Treville International, an import business, which enabled him to travel broadly and utilize his fluency of many languages. Later in life he became a Certified Financial Planner. He was President of both
Temple Am in Parsippany, N.J., and B’nai B’rith in Rochester, N.Y.
He loved teaching and did pro-bono work at the N.J. Department of Labor where he trained laid-off, downsized executives to prepare effective resumés and negotiate salaries. To quote Harry, “A resumé must be
written as if it were for Alexander the Great, not for Alexander the Adequate.”
Because of his love of history, Harry became an expert in ancient and medieval coins, especially Islamic
ones. He said, “My joy wasn’t related to the owning of coins, but lay in the discovering of their provenance.”
On many cruise ships he taught a course on the History of Money. A member of CHJ’s Jewish History group,
he continually amazed members with his vast knowledge of ancient history. Classical music, cinema and the
sciences were also his passions.
Harry was laid to rest at the Sarasota National Cemetery. His family in N.J. sat shiva the following week.
Important: BackPack for Kids Rosh Hashanah Appeal Report
At CHJ's Rosh Hashanah service, Len Rosen made an appeal for continuing support of our commitment to the All Faiths Food Bank BackPack for Kids Program. He shared some shocking
information about the presence of hunger among children in our own town. Len told us that in
2015-2016, a total of 2555 children received weekend backpacks. Though that seems to be a
large number, it represents only 12% of those children eligible. There are in fact over 20,000 children who
qualify for free or subsidized meals in Sarasota.
CHJ had reduced our support to 26 children for the 2014-2015 school year because of funds reduced from
the previous year. However, the fine response last year with initial donations of $3500, supplemented by
$3000 from an anonymous, non-member donor, and further contributions from CHJ members have allowed
us to pack for 40 children during this next school year.
We had hoped to increase this to 45 children, adding one child for every $160 over the $3000 contributed during our Rosh Hashanah collection. As of September 15, we have fallen short of our goal. Twenty congregants
who returned their envelopes on Rosh Hashanah have contributed a total of $2912. However, many others
have taken envelopes home and we have yet to hear from our snowbirds.
Renee Crames, the founder and moving force of our backpack program, will check again in one month. All
contributions will be added to the present total and we will increase the number of children for whom we pack
by the total contributed at that time.
Snowbirds! Send your contributions to http://www.allfaithsfoodbank.org/how-to-help/make-a-gift or
send a check to All Faiths Food Bank, 8171 Blaikie Ct, Sarasota, FL 34240. Note on your check that
your contribution is for the CHJ BackPack program.
These children are our neighbors. As Len said on Rosh Hashana, every time you drive past children waiting
for a school bus on a Monday, some of them are hungry. Your contributions are tax deductible, and the children will really appreciate your generosity.

Kristallnacht Service with The Humanaires and
Speakers Laszlo Biro and Joe Newman on A Remembrance
After our 10:30 A.M. Kristallnacht Service including the voices of The Humanaires, there will be a brief introduction to the history of Kristallnacht. We will learn what this night brought to two individuals with
quite different exposures to the tragic event . There will be a 15-minute period for audience participation.
Laszlo Biro. In 1944 when he was 15, Laszlo Biro and his parents were moved by the Germans
from Hungary to an Austrian labor camp. After the war, the family returned home where he continued his education, graduating from Kossuth University with an M.D., and finished a specialization
in dermatology. Then he crossed the border and came to America. A nine-month course and an
internship at Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn, enabled him to be re-licensed in this country.
Joe Newman will share his experience of Kristallnacht from an American perspective. Newman, a
CHJ member, was born in Chicago on January 13, 1913. Two years later his family moved to South
Bend. He graduated cum laude in Accounting from Notre Dame University and moved to Boston
where he had hopes of going to law school; but due to lack of funding he accepted a job with the
Social Security Administration. In 1945, he went into private practice as an accountant, retiring in
1979.
Saturday, November 21 at 10:30 A.M.
Thanksgiving Service with the Humanaires and presentations by
Denise Cotler on What Hunger Looks Like in Sarasota,
and Annie Morrison on Community Haven
Following our 10:30 A.M. Thanksgiving Service, Denise Cotler of All Faiths Food Bank will
speak on What Hunger Looks Like in Sarasota. Cotler joined All Faiths Food Bank in January
2014 as Senior Director of Development. Previously she served as Director of Development for
the Jewish Housing Council Foundation, Associate Director for the American Cancer Society and
Development Associate for The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee. Originally from New
York City, she has 2 sons, a new husband and stepson, and a dog named Charley.
We will also welcome back Annie Morrison speaking on Community Haven. Morrison is the CoFounder/Artistic Director of Kaleidoscope Theater, a musical theatre program for persons with
developmental differences, and Gotta Van Productions, celebrating solo performances and new
small cast plays that illuminate the human condition, especially that of those who are perceived
as “other than.”
Community Haven empowers independence and inclusion in all aspects of society for children, teenagers and
adults with disabilities by meeting their needs for therapy, education, socialization, housing, fitness, vocational
training, job placement and recreation.

Enjoy, and Shana Tovah – a good year of health for all.
Humanistic Judaism embraces a human-centered philosophy that combines rational thinking with a celebration
of Jewish culture and identity. It affirms that human beings possess the power and responsibility to shape their
own lives, and that ethics and morality are not divine in origin but are human responsibilities. Our mission is to
meet the needs of humanist, secular Jews as well as their non-Jewish family members/partners and friends in
the greater Sarasota and Manatee area.

EDUCATION SERIES—DECEMBER 2015
The Revisionaries
December 19, 2015 at 10.30 A.M. – at Unity in Fellowship Hall
The Revisionaries is a 2012 documentary film about the re-election of Don McLeroy, the
former chairman of the Texas Board of Education. The documentary focuses on
McLeroy’s opposition to scientifically sound material that he believed should not be taught
to Texas students, and to his campaign to insert creationist teaching into public school
textbook material requirements.
It also details how the Texas Board's decisions on textbook content influence textbooks
across the nation and affect the American culture war, (92 minutes). The Revisionaries was directed by Scott Thurman and produced by Silver Lining Films, Magic Hour Productions and Naked Edge Films.

After a very busy September when we shared beautiful music for the High Holidays with
the Congregation (including solos by tenor Robert Lischetti and soprano Susan Gordon),
our chorus is moving on to the songs, both old and new, that we will be singing during the
rest of this year. Please check the CHJ calendar for the dates when we will be singing. We meet to practice every Wednesday at 2:30 P.M. in the Unity Sanctuary from
mid-August to the end of April with our conductor Robert Lischetti. If you love to sing and especially if
blending your voice with others gives you joy, then this is the group for you! There is no audition. Please
check us out. We are a warm and welcoming group and we'll be delighted to see you.
For further information about being a singer or an associate with The Humanaires, please contact Sandy
Cadman at s.g.cadman@hotmail.com or 941-379-9894.
SUNSETTERS
Ours is always an open group that can accommodate an infinite number of people. We meet on the 3rd Sunday every month on Lido Beach – in front of
the pavilion. Our only agenda is the sunset. It is very informal and casual. We arrive
about 1-1/2 hours prior to sunset. Bring your own picnic dinner (something you can
grasp, like a sandwich, because the seagulls are hungry.) Bring chairs, of course. If
you’d like to join us, contact Barbara Shapiro at ms.shappy@verizon.net or 365-3756.
BIKERS
Our next bike ride is on Saturday, October 17 at 10:00 AM. We will ride about 1-1/2
hours in scenic Robinson Preserve, Bradenton. Then, continue the ride in the neighboring area visiting the Palma Sola Botanical Park, which has exotic fruit and nut trees, and
three lakes. We will lunch together after the ride. For further information please call or email Sandy Siegel: 941-228-8905, or sandrasiegel3600@gmail.com
CHAVURAH
We have two Chavurah groups embarked on new friendships and experiences. Become involved in starting the next Chavurah and enjoy the fellowship, intellectual
contact and pleasure of sharing with fellow CHJ members. Contact Renee Crames at
Reneecrames@yahoo.com to join or for information.
THE JEWISH HISTORY SEMINAR
From the CHJ History Seminar Archives: “The precursors of today’s up-scale gated
communities were the ghettos of Venice and Rome of the 16th- 18th centuries -- with
one major difference. In those times the gates of the ghettos were locked at night
not to keep strangers out but to keep Jews in.”
The History Seminar will meet on Wednesdays October 14th and 28th at Unity at 1P.M. in classroom B.
Readings in the Barnavi Atlas are pp.128 –133 (Oct.14) and pp.134 –139 (Oct 28).
You can never be too thin or know too much about Jewish history. Hope you will join us!
For more information contact Stan Katz at 343-0095 or Terry Langlois at 524-3985.
DIGITAL IMAGING GROUP (DIG)
We meet at 1:30 P.M. on the 3rd Tuesday of
every month at The Fountains Cinema, Parking Lot #4. An assignment is made and
members e-mail their required pictures, along with the best picture taken during the past
30 days. Photos are projected onto a large screen and editing software is applied to demonstrate possible enhancements. In addition, tutorials are presented with some guidance
for the next month’s assignment. Camera functions and general photography tips are addressed. New Members are welcome.
