Bailey Wins Big at Unstead
By Sue Smithson
While everyone is always pleased and excited about
the annual Horse of the Year honors and achievements,
the anticipation of the Dynamic Equine custom saddle
raffle fed the “buzz” all night at the NCDCTA Gala,
January 11 at The Umstead. Fewer than 50 names were
automatically entered in the drawing (1st - 3rd HOY,
above Novice Eventing and 2nd level dressage), and
Bailey Cook of Carrboro was the lucky winner!
“I never win anything!” Cook said, thrilled but

The 29
division champions for the 2013 Horse of the Year were
also thrilled with the individually sized embroidered
Rambo Dustbusters, in the newest high-tech lightweight
fabric. Reserve champions earned leather halters and
third place winners won custom woven throws.
As happy hour melted into seated dinner for over
200 attendees, NCDCTA Vice President and Gala
organizer Robyn Hahn recapped the year’s highlights,
thanked the many sponsors, and quickly dispatched the
club’s business as the slate of officers for 2014 was
accepted. Flanked by a slide show left and right, the
stage glittered with ribbons, door prizes, and gift
baskets. President Carol Kelly assisted as first through
third in all divisions were honored on stage. Eventing
chair Amanda Atkins recapped a successful eventing
season, and awarded medals to many high achievers.
Additional awards were presented to two
outstanding members: outgoing Junior / Young Rider
Chair Kris Daniel of Louisburg was honored with the
prestigious USDF Regional Volunteer of the Year Award
for Region 1, and Laura Dickerson of Chapel Hill was
awarded the USDF Region 1 Outstanding Contribution to
the Dressage Community – Youth.
The DJ in the adjoining salon fired up the music at
about 9:30 p.m. and the party shifted gears. It was a
beautiful balmy night at the Umstead Resort for a festive
celebration of accomplishments by riders, volunteers,
supporters. Everyone felt like a champion!

Turn on the haunches is
introduced at second level,
along with shoulder in and
haunches in.
It is
important to be able to
ride a controlled and correct
shoulder in as well as haunches in
before working on the "turn on the
haunches". The control you have of
your horses shoulders and
hindquarters
during
these
movements will aid in the
understanding and execution of a
good turn on the haunches.
The turn on the haunches is
an exercise that prepares the horse
and rider for more advanced
movements such as canter
What are the aids for the turn on the haunches?
pirouettes and walk pirouettes, as
well as being a good gymnastic tool
for both horse and rider. As a rider,
you learn to coordinate your aids
and gain control over your horses
front
and
back
end
simultaneously. The horse learns to
articulate his joints and stay "forward"
while not covering much ground.
As for the actual aids for the
turn, I like to be sure my horses and
students are able to ride a good
haunches in on a circle. This
actually gives you the feeling of
what the actual movement will
be. The horse must move around
the riders inside leg while not
stepping "out" against the outside
aids. Stepping out or backing up
are definite no-no's! I would rather
my horses learn to do them "large"
and stay forward thinking than to
get too ambitious in the learning
phase and try to make them too
small which may result in a "turn in
the
middle"
or
stepping
out/back. The riders outside rein
determines how much bend will be
allowed and also helps guide the
shoulders around the turn. The
inside leg helps with bend and
encourages the "forward thinking" I
mentioned earlier. The inside rein
creates a bit of flexion and can
sometimes be used in an "opening"
rein if the horse is getting stuck or
confused. Too much inside rein can
result in a horse that is overflexed,
stuck in the shoulders and usually
results in the horse stepping wide
with the outside hind foot to regain
its balance. I find it is best to start
with just a quarter turn or even just
a couple steps to make sure you
and your horse can stay balanced
during the turn.
Often times when I am
teaching I will encourage my riders
to "sit to the inside". The centrifugal
force of the turn can send the rider
too far out over their outside
seatbone which then throws the
horse off balance. The horse then
wants to step out and under the
riders weight to regain balance. I
am careful to ask my students to
literally "move their seat over"
because too many times I have seen
riders "sit to the inside" by simply
leaning their shoulders in that
direction which actually causes their
seat to go the OPPOSITE direction,
only making things worse! I also
like to start on a wall or on an
"imaginary line" from which the
turn will start and finish. When
preparing for the turn on the
haunches, I see many riders start
with a haunches in approach which
ALMOST ALWAYS ends up in the
horses outside shoulder popping
out over the imaginary line creating

a much more difficult turn. The
"half turn" then becomes almost a
3/4 turn because you must regain
control of the outside shoulder that
has drifted over the outside of the
line AND regain control of the
hindquarters which have usually
drifted to the inside of the line
before you can even START the
original turn!! I like to have my
riders think of doing a shoulder fore
with just a little bend and then as
you are able to collect the walk, start
to move the front of the horse
around the turn so that the hind
legs stay ON the line for a walk
pirouette and at least start on the
line for the turn on the haunches!
Again, it is always better to
make an oversized turn on the
haunches which has rhythm,
balance, relaxation and control over
one that has been "rushed",
resulting in an unbalanced horse
and rider and any number of
mistakes! So start big and only go
as small as you and your horse can
go without sacrificing quality! You
will get there!

Adult Amateur Spotlight:
Ellen Bradford
By Sue Smithson
Ellen Bradford of Aberdeen enjoys a particularly unique
bond with her 10-year old Quarter Horse How D Black Pistol,
or “Boomer”. Just after she bought him as a 6-year old in
2009, he bucked her off. The resulting hospitalization found
cancer, and the early detection may have saved her life!
“It’s been a long journey” said Bradford, from the year of
surgery, radiation, and recovery, to the present accolades of
winning the American Quarter Horse Association top training
level dressage horse in the nation and a top five AQHA
National Ranking for the Justin Rookie Intermediate Award.
Bradford and Boomer also finished the year as reserve
champions NCDCTA Amateur Training Level Dressage.
Besides significant health issues, other obstacles
impeded their path such as ill-fitting saddles, broken ribs
from jumping, and instructors moving away. Boomer is now
on the mend from a casting episode in which he trapped a
hind leg, but “he’s a tough little Quarter Horse,” Bradford said.
Bradford runs a boarding stable in Hoke County between
Southern Pines and Fort Bragg. Postage Stamp Farm is her 40
acre dream, and she runs it with husband Ed, retired military
and civil servant at Bragg. She currently trains with Brianna
Atwell, and is enjoying a new saddle that fits both horse and rider.
“It’s been one step forward, two steps back,” Bradford
quipped, but a new saddle, new trainer, and optimistic
outlook has Bradford thinking that 2014 might just be her
best year yet.
“I’m hoping to move up to First Level,” she said. “Now
that I’m more secure in the saddle, we’re working on the
lengthenings. “I’m really looking forward to this coming year.”
Editor's note: We regret to report that between the time of this
writing and publication, Boomer's injuries from being cast in
his stall in December were deemed career ending. The
prognosis from NCSU School of Veterinary Medicine was that
the horse had only a five percent chance of becoming pasture
sound, and he was humanely euthanised on January 8. Our
condolensces to the Bradford family.

The Mental Game: Break on Through to the Other Side
By Rebecca Blikslager
As luck would have it, I stumbled on a sports psychology
book while Christmas shopping; The Mind Gym by Gary
Mack. It’s a suitably concise book for those with a short
attention span (if unrelated to horses). And there was my
answer; chapter two even. He writes about a major league
pitcher who is very talented yet starts to fall apart during the
season. The pitcher is desperately searching for the reason
of his demise. Gary asks, “What are you doing when you are
really on your game?” and secondly “How do you do those
things?” The player listed his three personal and three
performance keys. Gary told him to focus on only the
performance keys for the next five days before the last game.
The pitcher threw a shut out in his next appearance! Mr.
Mack gives all of his athletes a 3x5 card. On one side they
write their personal keys and the other, performance keys.
“You can do it. You just aren’t” Kay
Meredith lamented. “But, I…..” I began.
She held up a gloved hand to stop me mid
excuse and elaborated “You know the what, why,
how and now I see you both have the physical ability.
It is your mind you have to conquer”
After almost two years of surgeries and rehab I had
made a triumphant return to the arena with a new mount in
May. Things were progressing nicely until the Capitol Classic
show the first week of June. Rytmik was decidedly unhappy.
Not overtly lame, or sore, just tight and more argumentative
than usual. Kay was commenting
frequently that I was falling to the right,
and riding Rytmik was like arm
wrestling an anaconda. We struggled
through the show and had a vet exam
the following Monday.
The vet
thought Rytmik needed her hocks
injected with steroids, as she was
positive to hock flexions, especially on
the right hind. Three weeks later we
were working in earnest again and she
became very lame on the right hind. I
dragged my husband Anthony, an
equine surgeon at NCSU, up to the
barn to evaluate. After a brief exam he
pronounced, “That is high up and
probably needs a scope. She needs to
go the vet school ASAP!” At the vet
school Dr. Redding found a large OCD
on her right stifle and a smaller one on
the left. As Anthony suspected, he recommended
arthroscopy to further evaluate and treat the problem. After
IRAP and surgery we had a guarded prognosis: “At least
three months of rehab; maybe six”. Stall rest was out of the
question because of her propensity to tie up, so we
commenced with hand walking; known as “kite flying” to
those familiar with rehab. Fortunately, I was able to ride
other horses with Kay to continue my education.
In early October there were more set backs. We went to
Holland on a horse-buying trip. There were a lot of nice
horses and I unwittingly rode too many without my special
saddle. This aggravated my former condition which had
sidelined me in the past. Rytmik, after appearing sound at
the vet school at the three month recheck was now slightly
lame in light work. So we scaled back yet again and waited.
Finally, on December 16th Kay is seeing the possibilities
while uttering the first sentence of this article, and I am full of
doubts. How do you convince the mind the body is capable?
Yours and that of the horse?

horse Rytmik and
trainer Kay Meredith

My personal keys:
1) I am accurate and prepare all
transitions
2) The horse is straight, moving
actively behind into a steady
connection at the withers
3) We function as a unit
My performance keys:
1) Ride every stride
2) Ride the hind legs into a steady
connection at the wither with hands
together
3) Ride into my heels
The following day on my own I
realized I had been one step behind. As
Kay had recognized, I was receiving
and interpreting the information from the horse correctly. I
could feel if we were lacking engagement, crooked or the
connection needed improvement. I knew where my legs, seat
and hands needed to be and how to operate them. I could
verbalize the rationale of the aids. Most importantly, I was
capable of occasionally creating the package of balance and
harmony. But it always seemed like a small, transient miracle
when everything worked together.
Two weeks later we had our first lesson after the
holidays. I rode every stride, into a steady connection at the
withers, with my heels the lowest point of my body. Kay said
at the end of the ride “Something has changed. You made a
major breakthrough today. You are now absorbed in the
learning process and we can move on.”
To quote the inimitable Yogi Berra: “90% of the game is
half mental”

management team as the Facilities Liaison and Equipment
manager. Martie Healy will continue as Show Manager of
Harvest Moon Dressage, which will be host to the Region 1
GAIG Championship in October, as well as the new manager
of LOL in Raleigh. This is the third year in a row that Martie
will be managing a regional championship at the Senator
Bob Martin Eastern Agricultural Center in Williamston and
each one of those shows has received accolades from the
competitors. The 2014 championships are shaping up to be
the biggest and best yet!
Although you are reading this
in the February newsletter, I am
writing it the day after the 2013 Horse Of The Year
Gala at the Umstead Hotel and Spa. It was once again
an elegant and festive celebratory event, and a simple thank
you to Vice President Robyn Hahn for the hours she spent
on making it all come together seems insufficient. The prizes
were beautiful and congratulations again to all the winners;
I enjoyed meeting you and handing you those gorgeous
prizes and ribbons.
More show news, for the first time ever, NCDCTA will host a
USDF Region 1 Adult Team Competition during the CDC. It
will be the only ATC in the Region this year and we are
looking forward to welcoming competitors from all over
Region 1. For all of you fans of the Region 1 South Youth
Team Competition, please note that the YTC will move from
the CDC show to the Labor Of Love (LOL) in August!!
At the start of the Gala each year NCDCTA holds its annual
election; I would like to tell you about some of the changes
on the Board for 2014. First, Diane Paige is stepping aside
(not down!) as Chair of the Competition Committee. Drawing
on her many years at IBM, Diane brought structure to the
hiring of our show managers, including creating new
contracts and timetables for insurance and other necessary
paperwork. Her efforts have made the Competition
Committee more efficient and organized for our new Chair,
Patti Hildreth. Patti will wear two hats on our Board, one as a
Member At Large, and the other at the helm of the
Competition Committee. One of Patti’s goals is to expand the
committee to include a Volunteer Coordinator and a
Sponsorship Coordinator. If you are interested or would like
additional information, feel free to contact Patti at
Whinfarm@Bellsouth.net .
Kris Daniel, a member of the Board for five years, is stepping
down. Kris was voted the USDF Regional Volunteer of the
Year award at the national convention for her work with our
youth. The new Jr/YR Coordinator is Dawn Weniger. Dawn,
a very successful trainer and competitor, has been active in
our youth program for years and is tasked with not only
finding our talented youth, but helping to move them up the
levels. Dawn will also be working with Martie on a program
for the Youth Team Competition at the end of the summer.
Our new Dressage Education Committee Co-chairs
introduced themselves and their committee members in last
month’s newsletter. They have an ambitious and exciting
agenda for the year, so keep checking the website for
updates and information from them!
More Competition Committee news! Many of you already
know Sandy Donovan, our wonderful manager of the
Summer Highland Fling dressage show in Tryon, NC. Sandy,
who managed the Region 3 GAIG Championships at the
International Horse Park in Conyers, GA last year, one of the
largest regional championships ever, will now also manage
the Capital Dressage Classic (CDC) show in Raleigh. We
welcome Sandy, her smiling face, and her expertise in
Raleigh.
Welcome to all! I look forward to another year of
collaboration and furthering our mission of education,
recognition, and promoting the sports of dressage and
combined training.
Olga Wagner, ever unflappable, will continue on the show

status. The 4,000+ acres of equestrian
heaven just North of Southern Pines finally achieved
a milestone that the WMF Board of Directors has been working
on for over two years: National Historic status for the “old
country” which includes the area between Youngs Road, May
Street, and U.S. 1 North. The U.S. Department of the Interior
agreed with the WMF committee’s proposal that the old growth
timber bearing turpentine scars from the early 1900’s and the
sporting history which began with the Boyd brothers and
continued through the stewardship of the late Pappy and Ginny
Moss was deserving of National Historic status. Trail riders on
the Moss Foundation will now see permanent NHP plaques in
the “old country” area from Homesite Hill to Lake Bay. For more

PIERONI FAMILY sets a new record.
In January 2013 we published an
Amateur Spotlight on member Nan
Pieroni of Seven Lakes, who turned 70
years old and completed her first
Grand Prix dressage test in the same
year. (Pieroni and her Leopold were
ranked 3rd at Grand Prix for 2013

members of the Pieroni family ran and
completed an Ultra-Marathon together in Nashville, Tn,
breaking the former Guinness Book record of seven family
members. The youngest family member was 11 years old, and
the oldest, Nan’s husband Dan, was 73. All the documentation
for the Guiness Book of Records has been submitted, and they
are waiting for the standard three month period to be officially
published. Eleven of the family members were blood relatives,
two were in-laws, so the 11 primary members will be the ones
honored with the title. Nan did not run the 50 kilometer (32 mi.)
race herself, but was the nutritionist and head cheerleader for
“Team Pieroni”.

NCDCTA Dressage Education Committee
2014 Scholarship and Grant Opportunities for
NCDCTA Adult Amateurs and Junior/Young Riders
by Nancy E. Love, DVM
I believe the old joke is as follows…
”How do you make a small fortune in horses? Start
with a large one!” We all know that our sport is an
expensive one, however, if you know where to look, there are
monies available to assist with our passion. Did you know that
NCDCTA offers three $500 scholarships each year? As an NCDCTA
member, you are eligible (and encouraged) to apply. I submitted my
application several years ago soon after I had purchased a horse. I
was selected as the AA recipient and was able to use the funds for
lessons with “O”-judge Linda Zang. I can tell you those funds
helped a lot!
The earliest deadline for the scholarships is still several months
away. On one of these windy, wet days when riding is out of the
question, why not sit down with an application? As a result, next
year this time you may be organizing a trip to the Spanish Riding
School or lessons with a “dream” trainer.
While every effort has been made to insure the following
information is up to date, members should visit the individual
scholarship/grant websites for the most current information. This
list is not exhaustive and other funding opportunities may be
available. So hit the internet and get writing, you may be the next
lucky recipient of a generous funding opportunity!

Attention All (Imperfect) Adults!
Don’t be shy, apply.
USDF has scheduled an
Adult Clinic with Olympian Hilda Gurney in our Region
April 12-13
Wyndham Oaks in Boyds, MD.
These USDF Adult clinics are an excellent opportunity to ride with wonderful trainers,
nationally known, who have dedicated their careers to the development of riders and horses
alike. Each region hosts just one clinic, so this is the only opportunity to either ride with or
audit the USDF Hilda Gurney “Harmonizing With Your Horse” clinic.
Rider applications are being accepted now, and the deadline is February 14th.
Applications are sent to a regional committee, chaired by Lisa Schmidt, the director of Region
1; the committee reviews all applications and selects the horse/rider teams to participate,
as well as alternates.
What kind of rider are they looking for?
Anyone over the age of 22 (this is an adult clinic), adult amateurs, professionals, and
everyone in between. What kind of horse are they looking for? Any breed, any level. The
committee’s goals are to have a wide representation of rider abilities, horse breeds, levels of
accomplishment, and geographic representation across the region. Perfect riders need not
apply, as the purpose of the clinic is to educate riders, horses, and auditors alike. If you are
perfect, we cannot learn from you!
For more information about the USDF Adult clinics, go to the USDF website:
http://www.USDF.org/education/clinics/adults/index.asp
For rider a application, please go to:
http://www.USDF.org/docs/education/clinics/adult/RiderApplication.pdf
Applications to audit will open shortly, and here is where to find that application:
