Strong finish
And that’s a wrap! AMZ finished the
2015 Formula Student season in style
with an Overall win at the Circuit de
Catalunya, host to Formula Student
Spain. An astonishing performance in a
thrilling battle with their main competitors KA-RaceIng from Karlsruhe and
Greenteam Stuttgart guaranteed the
teams position at the top of the Formula
Student Electric World Ranking for one
more year and provided a fitting sendoff for “flüela” and the young engineers.
After the longest road trip of the
season, the team was greeted by the
searing tarmac of the Circuit de Catalunya, roughly 40 km from the city of
Barcelona. Once the accommodation
for both the team and its car was fully
set up, the Swiss students had time to
take in the sunshine and prepare themselves for the next day. Even in the last
days of a long and demanding year, the
concentration and determination to win
were still there to see throughout the
whole team.
Cost & Business
On Thursday, “flüela” was checked
for rules compliance in scrutineering. In
the meantime, the first static discipline
of the event was completed in form of
the Business Plan Presentation. For the
third time in succession, the level of the
presentation and the fictional business
plan impressed the judges and earned
the second price.
Soon afterwards, scrutineering was
interrupted as “flüela” had to be in the
pit for the Cost Analysis event, where
the Excel sheets of the Cost Report
came under scrutiny for one last time. In
the end, a convincing performance got
its reward with a pleasing fourth place
finish.
Cultural Sharing
Ending the first day on a high note,
“flüela” passed all the tests of scrutineering with flying colours. The team
could celebrate these achievements
during an evening programme unique
to Formula Student Spain: the “Cultural
Sharing Dinner”. In the paddock, where
all the team tents had been built up,
each team was invited to prepare a local dish to share with everyone. True to
their reputation as the “Official Formula
Student Provider of Raclette”, the Swiss
engineers melted roughly 30 kg of
cheese, to the great delight of their Formula Student colleagues and friends.
Engineering Design
Friday was Design day. The team
was able to convince the judges with
their profound knowledge of the engineering design concepts behind
“flüela”. Together with the teams from
Karlsruhe and Stuttgart, a place in the
flüela in Acceleration
Design finals was booked. In the last
static event of the season, the Engineering Design finals, the students from ETH
Zurich were able to pull all the stops and
amazed the judges with the outstanding
quality of their work. This performance
won them an amazing first place finish, the third in four events! “flüela” and
its team were even deemed worthy of
the Overall Engineering Design award,
a combined combustion and electric
scoring.

Autocross
The first race day was completed
with Autocross. After the first driver had
already driven two very fast times, the
second driver delivered an absolutely
astonishing performance that was more
than one second faster than the next
best team.
Acceleration & Skidpad
Endurance
After some final preparations on the
Practice Area, things got serious on Saturday. Both Acceleration and Skidpad
were scheduled in the morning. Astute
planning ensured that the drivers had
the best track and weather conditions
for the two races. After setting a solid
time in the first Acceleration run, “flüela”
and its drivers proceeded to Skidpad
after a quick setup change. The second
driver was able to smash the previous
best time by almost two tenths of a sec-
Up until this point, AMZ had delivered
an almost flawless performance. Now
only the Endurance race was standing
between the team and the second overall win of the season. But as it turned
out, nothing was going to stop “flüela”, not even the unforgiving Spanish
heat. The first half of the race was a
remarkable showing of speed and agility. No team was able to match “flüela’s” almost brutal pace. After the driv-
er change, the car got more difficult to
handle for the second driver, especially
because of rapidly rising tire temperatures. Even though the car from KA-Raceing was able to make good some valuable seconds and points in the Overall
ranking, it ultimately wasn’t enough to
displace the Swiss from first place. In
the evening, the team celebrated its
remarkable exploits ecstatically on the
Grand Prix podium of the Circuit de
Catalunya, an unforgettable experience
for all team members. While the champagne corks were popped, sights were
already set on the coming season. Who
will be “flüela’s” successor? What will
be the main concepts behind it? How
will the first place in the World Ranking be defended against ever stronger
competition? All of these questions will
get answers in the following weeks and
months, when a new team will start to
build a new race car, the tenth in AMZs
history. Stay tuned!
