Second Annual Citywide Yard Sale Success
It was a beautiful morning of bargain shopping and
community engagement as 75 households participated in this year’s sale. Based on suggestions from
last year’s sale, directional signs and itemized listings
were added. The committee welcomes suggestions on
ways to improve the overall experience for shoppers.
If you have a suggestion please email aecitywideyardsale@gmail.com.
Your neighbors who worked to make this year’s yard
sale possible were Mary Bell, Carolyn Chandler,
Peggy Clayton, Joan Lass, Marycharles Roberts,
Mary Crowell, Ben Cannon, Red Murphey and Dave
Maddox. Laura McCrodden, Candance Jones, Deb
Schum, Christie Granger, Jane Howe, Steve Ryan, Jeanne Giager,
Sarah Zimny, Rita Csonka and Jan Winfield helped with maps
Page 6 and signs. Karen Holmes took care of registration forms and money. Kelly Brooks created the
wonderful map and itemized listings. Sue Weaver
did a wonderful job organizing the charity pickups.
The Citywide Yard Sale would not have happened
without the support of the Board and Mayor and
Commissioners, City Manager Clai Brown and all
other City associates.
Save the date of September 17, 2016, for the Third
Annual Citywide Yard Sale. Registration will begin
on Monday, August 29, and end on Friday, September 9. If you are interested in volunteering for the
Third Annual Citywide Yard Sale please contact

Annual Christmas Tree Lighting
Monday, November 30 at 6 p.m.
The Avondale Estates
Christmas celebration
begins with the lighting
of the Christmas tree
located at the intersection
of Clarendon Avenue and
South Avondale Road.
Boy Scout Troop 6 will
be giving away cookies in
a tent adjacent to the tree.
This is a rain-or-shine
event, so additional tents
will be set up if needed.
The Avondale First
Baptist Church will begin
caroling at 6:30 p.m. The tree lighting will take place
at 7 p.m. and cider and donuts will be available for
attendees. As in the past, Santa Claus will once again
make a special personal appearance for the occasion.
17th Annual Lake
Avondale Tree Lighting
Saturday, December 5 at 6 p.m.
Lake Avondale
This spectacular event has become one if the City’s
favorite events thanks to longtime resident Thomas P.
Samford, who famously coined the phrase, “It’s another
beautiful day in Avondale Estates.” Tom, a successful
self-taught engineer, built a home in Avondale Estates in 1950 and remained in the City until he passed
away in 2012, at age 94. He built the gazebo at Lake
Avondale, and helped his grandsons design and build
a bridge there to honor his late son, John. Each Christmas, the community gathers for the annual Lake Tree
Lighting, when a “floating” Christmas tree designed by
Tom is lit at Lake Avondale. (Source: Samford Family

2015 Mayors’
Christmas Motorcade
Georgia Regional Hospital • Tuesday, December 2
It’s time once again for the City of Avondale Estates to collect items most needed by
patients this Christmas at Georgia Regional
Hospital at Atlanta (GRHA). The Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) began the Mayors’
Christmas Motorcade in 1958 at the request
of then-Governor Ernest Vandiver. The event
provides holiday gifts for patients in hospitals run by
the Georgia Department of Behavioral
Health and Developmental Disabilities
(DBHDD). It also
raises awareness for
DBHDD programs
and patients.
There are currently
five regional mental health
hospitals in the state, serving thousands of
Georgians. Many of these clients have lived in
the hospital facility for much of their lives and
receive little, if any, support from their families.
Without the Mayors’ Christmas Motorcade, staff
members at these hospitals say many of their
clients would not receive a gift for the holidays.
The Christmas spirit demonstrated by cities during the Motorcade extends beyond the
holiday season. Any gifts not handed out during
Christmas are used for client birthdays or given
to newly arrived clients, who may need many of
the items. In this way, cities help the hospitals
celebrate special occasions year-round and help
the hospitals meet the needs
of their clients.
Your generous
donations will make
Christmas
dreams come
true!
Please
send new and
unwrapped
gifts. Donations of
wrapping paper, ribbons and bows are also needed. Cash donations
are welcome! Checks should be made payable
to: GRHA Patient Benefit Fund. Gifts or
donations will be accepted at City Hall
beginning in November and ending December 1. Thank you for sharing the
Holiday Joy!
Bring One For The Chipper!
Saturday, January 9
www.KeepGeorgiaBeautiful.org
Bring One for the Chipper, Georgia’s annual
Christmas tree recycling program, involves hundreds
of Georgia communities and thousands of volunteers.
Since its inception, over 6 million Christmas trees
have been recycled and diverted from landfills, according to spearheading organization Keep Georgia
Beautiful. Last year a total of 117,696 trees were collected. Of these, 108,845 were recycled into mulch
for playgrounds, city and county landscaping projects, and individual homes; 6,009 trees were sunk
into lakes across the state to provide fish habitats; and
2,842 were used for fuel or other purposes.
Please recycle your Christmas trees by placing them on the curb from Monday, December 28, to Thursday, December 31. On Saturday January 9, trees
should be brought to the old compost area by the lake, near Wiltshire Drive and
Berkeley Road; between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Signs posted by the lake
will mark the drop-off location. If you leave your Christmas tree up past December
31, please place it on the curb and City Public Works associates will pick it up.

for their continued support for this special
event.
A professional photographer will capture
the moment, and you can download images
for free! You are also welcome to take
your own snapshots. Enjoy holiday treats
while you wait your turn, and take home
some reindeer food to ensure Rudolph and
the gang can find your house on Christmas
Eve.
To avoid long wait times, please
come at your assigned time, based on the
first letter of your last name. However,
if your child’s nap schedule interferes, just
come when it makes sense for your family.
V – Z: 1 – 1:30 p.m.
R – U: 1:30 – 2 p.m.
M – Q: 2 – 2:30 p.m.

the spirit of the season, the Parents’ Coop will be collecting canned goods and
other non-perishables for Decatur-area
Emergency Assistance Ministry (DEAM)
which helps to prevent homelessness and
hunger. Please contribute what you can for
families in need!
Event organizers need volunteers to
contribute baked goods and help during
the event for 30-minute shifts. If you’re
