Come to the Spring Clean-up set for April 18 Leadership Atchison County joins annual event with recycle drive The Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce has announced the date for its annual Spring Clean-up. This year’s event, organized by the Chamber’s Beautification Council, will run from 8 a.m. to noon on April 18. New this year is a collaborative effort with the Community Leadership class, which will hold a recycle drive on the same day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Acceptable Spring Clean-up items include metal, wood, appliances, batteries, yard waste and tires. Tires must be delivered to the Chamber between 8 a.m. and noon on April 18. Items can be delivered to the Santa Fe Depot, 200 S. 10th St. Interested residents may also call the Chamber at 913-367-2427 to request a pick-up for items other than tires. All items must be curbside or in the alley. The Spring Clean-up is also a perfect volunteer opportunity. Those interested in helping with this spring’s project can call the Chamber to sign up. Those who register before April 8 will receive a free T-shirt. Volunteers should report to the Chamber by 8 a.m. on April 18. Lunch will be provided for volunteers by Leadership Atchison County. “We hope everyone will volunteer for a few hours to help clean up our community!” said Chamber president Jacque Pregont. “This event every spring brings the community together to make Atchison beautiful. It is also a wonderful opportunity for parents to teach the importance of volunteerism.” The recycling drive, sponsored by Leadership Atchison County, features music, contests, prizes and a recycling drive as part of a service project organized by the Community Leadership class. The class includes participants in the Leadership Atchison County program and Benedictine College students. Items that will be accepted include paint in sealed containers, bagged or boxed aluminum cans and residential electronics. Also, residents who bring in 10 plastic bags will receive a free cloth bag (limit three). A recycled electronics art contest will also be part of the event. Those interested in created art from recycled items can contact Emma Sawin by email at koalayummy@gmail.com for more information. “We are very excited to offer a recycling day to the community of Atchison,” said Ashley Kallman, a member of the Chamber’s Leadership Development Council who is one of the leaders of the Community Leadership course. “Recycling is a very important issue to the students and community members who are participating in Leadership Atchison County. If you would like your business to be represented in the basket, drop off a SMALL item, with a business card attached, or give Sally a call, by April 20th. Chamber looking for drivers In an effort to keep its daily Atchison History Tours, private charters and special events running smoothly, the Chamber is looking for trolley and coach drivers. Drivers must have a valid CDL in order to drive either vehicle. Drivers must also have an air brakes endorsement to drive the trolley. We are looking for all levels of involvement from our drivers, including regular weekday or weekend driving for our regular tours and those who would like to be considered for private charters. We also need a small pool of emergency drivers. For drivers without the air brakes endorsement, the Chamber would be happy to get a group together to attain that certification. Bulk Mailing regulations have changed Attention anyone using the bulk mail rates: regulations have changed. Please take an example of what you are planning to mail to the post office to make sure it adheres to the recent changes and pick up the trays you will need for mailing. This will prevent difficulties with the mailing. The Chamber will be happy to help with the paperwork and getting your mailing ready. Call us at 913-367-2427 if you have any questions. Chamber email communications The Chamber is finally wrapping up its new — and much longer —list of members. However, because of this update and some technological issues, the eNews and other email communications may not be reaching everyone who wishes to receive them. If you know of anyone who is not receiving the eNews and should be, please email Jason at trolley@atchisonkansas. net. This could include other people in your office or those in the community who are not receiving the eNews. Also, if you receive multiple copies of our mailings, let Jason know so he can modify the mailing list. MEMBER NEWS “The Foreigner” on stage at Theatre Atchison Theatre Atchison’s latest live entertainment offering is sure to leave audiences laughing out loud! THE FOREIGNER by Larry Shue demonstrates what can happen when a group of devious characters must deal with a stranger who (they think) knows no English. “Froggy” LeSeuer brings a friend along on a trip to a fishing lodge, a pathologically shy young man named Charlie who is overcome with fear at the thought of making conversation with strangers. So, Froggy tells all assembled that Charlie is from a foreign country and speaks no English. Once alone the fun really begins, as Charlie overhears more than he should: revelations and plans made with the thought that Charlie doesn’t understand a word being said. The fact that he does understand fuels the nonstop hilarity of the play and sets up the wildly funny climax in which things go uproariously awry for the “bad guys,” and the “good guys” emerge triumphant. Led by Director and Designer Mike Swymeler (St. Joseph), the cast of the foreigner includes Richard Boehner as Froggy and Jared Martin as Charlie, and also features Anne Eggers, Cheyenne Lynch, Corbin Hernandez, Darby Lynch and Ryan Stack. Serving as Stage Manager is Debbie Hunsaker (Highland). Connie Shalz (St. Joseph) is Costume Coordinator. Chuck Pulliam (Atchison) leads set construction. Performances of THE FOREIGNER are Fridays & Saturdays, April 17, 18, 24 & 25 at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays, April 19 & 26 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets for adults are $10, and for students are $6. Reservations are not required, but tickets may be reserved in advance by calling Theatre Atchison’s box office at (913) 367-SHOW (7469).
