Cody Simpson at Limestone! By: Felicia Gillan, Reporter On Wednesday, September 7, 2011, Limestone was the host to pop singer Cody Simpson. He sang three songs and the audience, made up of the Limestone students, seemed to enjoy the concert. In fact one student was caught saying, ―Limestone was lucky because out of all other schools we won.‖ This so called ―luck‖ that Limestone is gaining is also giving the school a better reputation, which is important for any school to have. When asked about their favorite part of the concert, another student said, ―My favorite part of the concert was Cody Simpson sings for the LCHS student body. Photo courtesy of Matti Foiles Limelight reporter, Sarah Watson, was able to get an exclusive interview with Cody after the concert. Here is the conversation. How were you discovered? I was discovered on MySpace in 2009 by a famous music producer when he saw a video of me singing a song I wrote. Who are your musical role models? My musical role models are Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars. I admire their talent and positive attitudes. What do you miss most about everyday life that you do not get to experience with your career? I really miss going to a normal school and having a normal social life. What do you miss the most about Australia? I miss many things such as surfing and the warm beaches, but I miss my family the most. What do you think of the Peoria area? I have not seen much of Peoria, but I think it is a very nice place. Which celebrities have you had the chance to work with and meet? I have met Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber. I have worked with Flo Rida, Ryan Tedder from One Republic, Iyaz, Diggy Simmons, Chris Brown, and Big Time Rush. Do you still get nervous before you perform? Yes, especially when I have to perform for smaller crowds. Are you working on any new songs? Yes, my debut album is coming out next fall. What do you think of Limestone Community High School? I have not seen many American high schools but Limestone is a fantastic school. What I really love about Limestone is the wonderful students and fantastic teachers. At the end of the show Cody was given a Limestone shirt and a photo collage spelling out his last name. Limestone can be assured that Cody Simpson appreciates the effort and enthusiasm Limestone gave him. From the desk of the Principal Interview With Cody Simpson By: Sarah Watson, Reporter probably the choir singing to Cody because it shows him how grateful our school is that he came.‖ A student from the choir, Kylie Switzer, agreed saying, ―Limestone showed Cody that he is going to go far because people know his music and are excited about it.‖ Mrs. Warren’s Wisdomisms Your beliefs are powerful. They drive all choices and decisions that you make. Your belief system defines and shapes who you are. It also determines your potential. Thoughts of ―I can’t do it‖ will lead to self-doubt and failure just as surely as thoughts of ―I can do it‖ will lead to achievement and success. The great thing about beliefs is that you have the power to change them. You can choose to replace beliefs that limit your potential with beliefs that empower you. Your beliefs are powerful. Your beliefs impact your life through your ex- pectations, or your beliefs about the future. Whatever you expect of yourself becomes your own self-fulfilling prophecy. You will make choices and behave in such a way to fulfill those expectations. If you truly expect to be successful you will prepare for those results and fulfill the expectation. You will always get what you expect. Make it a habit to continually expect the very best of yourself, and you will have one of the keys to success. Henry Ford was correct when he said, "Whether you think you can or think you can't - you are right." Welcome Back! I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to Limestone Community High School for the 2011 / 2012 school year. This school year can be filled with opportunities for all of you. This year will be what you make of it both inside the classroom and with cocurricular activities. A school year is only successful with the involvement and enthusiasm of its student body. We are off to a fantastic start. Keep it up. As always, a new school year brings a new beginning and new opportunities for all our students. It is a chance to begin a new chapter in your high school career or simply a chance to start anew. Take advantage of the many opportunities available to the students of Limestone Community High School. I encourage each and every student to be involved in a variety of the co-curricular programs available. These programs include athletics, fine arts, and a multitude of clubs and organizations. Again, welcome to your high school, Limestone Community High School. This year will be what you make of it both individually and collectively as a student body. Make it a great year. -Mr. Gresham News 2 And the emmy Goes to… By Katie Metcalf, Section Editor Limestone! September 24, wrapped up Limestone’s Hollywood class sponsors. ROTC—for the blue at heart By Katie Metcalf, Section Editor As you stare down at your college applications later this year, next year, two years from now, or three years from now, you will inevitably be asked what kind of leadership skills you possess and what type of community service projects you have performed. While many people rip their hair out and scrape together minor experiences and try to make them a big deal, the cadets of Limestone’s Air Force Junior ROTC have nothing to worry about. Ask any cadet what they do in ROTC and the first thing they will respond with is community service…and a lot of it. However, this is no normal community service. Instead of it being some sort of required task, all the community service they do is totally optional, and most people sign up for a lot of it, because once they try one event, they are hooked. All their service and color guard events are completely cadet-run, meaning the cadets themselves set up, supply, and get other people to sign up for these events. While ROTC is in fact a military based program, less than three percent of the cadets in the program actually end up joining the military. Instead, the program prepares you for your future, whatever you plan it to be. They will help with preparation for college or military, and they have tutoring sessions Monday through Thursday after school for anyone who needs help with grades. MSgt Waltz, one of the instructors of the program said, ―We want to provide a comfortable environment where kids are accepted—where everybody’s accepted.‖ Out-of-school/overnight trips are another highlight of ROTC. Last year, in mid-March they went on a two-day trip to Scott Air Force Base in St. Louis, Missouri. The unit took twenty-two cadets on this amazing trip, and a month later twenty specially selected cadets got to fly on a C-130. ROTC offers many unique and amazing opportunities you may not be offered anywhere else, as long as your grades stay up. Besides all the community service, life skills, and trips ROTC offers, the unit is jam-packed with some of the greatest people you will ever meet. Everyone in ROTC is kind and respectful, and clearly glad to be in the program. They stand out in how they act, what they do, and even what they wear. They affectionately call each other ―blueberries‖ on uniform day because, well, that is what they are. Covered in head-to-toe Air Force blue, they wear the uniform proudly and are more than happy to explain what all their decorations mean. Joining ROTC is easy. Located in the foreign language hall, room 202, Major Russick or MSgt Waltz would be glad to talk to anyone, any time. ROTC counts as a PE credit, and your counselor can get your schedule changed in a matter of minutes. So try the program out, for a term, or even a week. It truly is a program for everyone. On September 11, 2001, the history of the United States changed forever. I knew something was wrong. We went inside and saw the second plane hit. I then realized that the world had changed. Someone had committed the most evil act and was making a statement. This made me want to do something meaningful, so I began teaching JROTC.‖ This is not your typical disaster movie. There are no explosions, no asteroids, and there are definitely no zombies. Instead, Contagion is about a mom who comes home from a business trip with a cough that turns into a lethal disease that spreads across the world. We watch as a family deals with the loss of loved ones, and government officials scramble to find a cure. This film is handled with a bleak realism where no one is safe. It’s no secret that many people don’t make it to the end credits of the film including some of the film’s A-list cast. There is also no magic, quick solution to stop the virus. This makes the film all the more compelling. Contagion accomplishes what few movies can. It sticks with you. After you see this movie you will cringe at every cough you hear, you will count the times you touch your face, you won’t be able to hold onto handrails, and you will think twice before you grab the gas pump to fill up. If you check this movie out, be sure to stock up on hand sanitizer. You will need it. 4.5/5 Stars By: Josh Carrington Section Editor Fall TV is back! All of our favorite shows had a nice summer break, but now they’re all here. Let’s take a look at what we have to look forward to. First up on AMC, zombie fan favorite, The Walking Dead is back from the dead and will air on Oct. 16. AMC also has a new series starting on Nov. 16 called Hell on Wheels. It’s a western that takes place during the Civil War. Over on FX, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is back for its seventh season; Sons of Anarchy comes riding back for its fourth season. FX is also getting into the horror genre with its new show, American Horror Story, starting on Oct. 5. HBO is bringing back its successful Prohibition-Era gangster show, Boardwalk Empire, for its second season. Showtime is coming back with its highly successful serial killer of serial killers program Dexter for its sixth season. ABC comes flying in with its new period drama, Pan Am, which follows the story of a group of women during the 1960s who decide they want to see the world so they become stewardesses. NBC is back this fall with their tried and true Thursday lineup of The Office, Community, and Parks and Recreation. Also Saturday Night Live is back for its 37th season. Fox is back with its new prehistoric time traveling show, Terra Nova. Also on Fox, Simon Cowell makes his return to U.S. homes with his new singing competition, The X Factor. There will be no shortage of great shows for you to watch, so put those DVRs to work! By: Josh Carrington Section Editor In 2001, the Oakland A’s were in a predicament. They had just lost in the playoffs to the New York Yankees, and they were going to lose three of their star players to bigger teams with bigger budgets. General Manager, Billy Beane (Brad Pitt), had to fill those spots with equally talented players, but with only a third of the budget of teams such as the Yankees. Beane ends up hiring Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), a Yale graduate, with a degree in economics to help him find the players he needs. They come up with the theory that only getting on base matters. Whether with walks or actual hits, it didn’t matter, the players just needed to get on base. Using complex math equations and a lot of hope, they put together their team. All along the way they had their detractors, but they stayed the course regardless. On Homecoming night, my group and I decided to go to a new place, Biaggi’s, an Italian ristorante! As I walked inside, the hostess came to us right away with our reservations. They were very kind! As we were seated, we were given Italian bread and olive oil parmesan sauce. The waiter had a great sense of humor and came around for all of our drinks. It did not take too long to bring the drinks out, but they were pretty busy with other homecoming groups not to mention all the other people there as well. There was SO MUCH to choose from; I didn’t know what I wanted. I ended up ordering Chicken Parmesan with Alfredo, but I also got to taste samples of other foods I wanted to try. I got to try chicken alfredo vegetables, veal parmesan, rice balls with vegetables, and pork chops with parmesangorgonzola butter. Everything was amazing! They are very casual, yet very high class. The wait time for my food took a while, but as I mentioned before they were This film is a classic underdog tale about a true story. It will have you fist pumping in some scenes and heart broken in others. This is easily one of the best films of the year, so be sure to check it out for yourself to find out how the Oakland A’s new strategy pans out. 5/5 Stars By: Josh Carrington Section Editor very busy. However, once I received my food it was well worth the wait! Their courses are very large as well, so you get awfully full. The cost for my date and I was around $25.00, which is not bad at all! There are different menus for lunch, dinner, dessert, kids, gluten-free, take out, and for special events. The location for the Peoria Biaggi’s is 2601 West Lake Avenue 61615. I highly recommend when you want to go to a fancy food place, yet in a casual environment, go to Biaggi’s! 5/5 Stars By: Matti Foiles Reporter Sports 6 ROCKETS FOOTBALL KICKS OFF! By: Sarah Dillingahm, Section Editor The 2011 Limestone football team has been working hard all summer, and now the season for the Rockets has finally begun! The team lost some great athletes due to the graduation of 2010 but still have many experienced players returning. The Rockets have a really young team this year with 18 new starters out of 22 positions. According to Coach Turner, ―We will consider this season a success if we improve each week.‖ All the boys of the Rockets football team have a great relationship. Running back Joben Barnes says, ―My favorite part of Limestone football is the close relationship with my brothers on the team.‖ All of the players and coaches think that Washington is the team to beat this year. As DE Jake Light quotes, ―Go out and play every game like it’s your last.‖ Good luck Rockets, and have a great season! The Rockets’ current record stands at 1-4. By: Cordell Rudolph, Reporter The Rockets drive towards the end zone during the Homecoming game versus Morton. Photo courtesy of Mr. Trainor "It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit." - Harry S Truman The above quote is one that the 2011 Rockets Volleyball team hopes can help them achieve success on the court this year. With a core of young talent that possesses little varsity experience, Coach Stoner has high hopes for her team this year. The team is comprised of 2 seniors, 9 juniors, and 1 sophomore, which boasts athleticism, great team chemistry, and a love for the game as their strengths. ―If we stick together as a team, I see us near the top; if we don't gel on the court, we will be middle/lower end of the pack,‖ said Stoner. That should not be a problem with a team that Stoner describes as a good group, both on and off the court. Stoner believes that every player on her team has the potential to be a great leader, but only time will tell as to who will emerge in that role. The Lady Rockets huddle before a match versus Washington. Photo by: Matti Foiles, Reporter The Lady Rockets host the LCHS Fall Classic on October 14-15, which expects to draw a good turnout. By: Brooke Everette, Reporter This year’s Boys’ Varsity Soccer team, led by Coach Robinson has had a great year so far. With their great communication skills on and off the field, the Rockets have earned their wins. The team is mainly led by seniors Austyn Yeske, Ben Lastoria, Luke Skaggs, Danny Hurst, Brandon Allen, Billy Kemper, and Kody Krupps. The boys plan on winning Regionals this year, but Coach Robinson quotes, ―They have to do a better job of finishing the ball.‖ The team’s strengths would have to be leadership and creativity. Their weaknesses however, are their lack of finishing. For the conference, they hope to beat Washington and Pekin. The soccer team is very dominant and plays to win. They also have great sportsmanship skills and listen to each other. Girls Golf Tees Off with High Expectations Game, Set, Match By: Molly Krusemark, Reporter The 2011 Girls tennis team is coached by Mr. Wallinger. The team has several returning letterman this year. The girls work well together and help each other out. Coach Wallinger said all the girls seem to really enjoy playing the sport. Although there are several returning letterman, there isn't a lot of experience compared to the other teams in their conference. Junior Nicole Furniss is expected to lead the team this year. Cross Country has Detweiller in Sight By: Matti Foiles, Reporter Mr. Durham, coach of the cross country team at Limestone, has a good outlook on the season. Hopefully, the boys team will finish top 25 in state, and the girls team is currently a new team. The top athletes for the 2011 season are Tyler Morse, Ben Austin, and Brice Welton. There aren’t many runners on the team and that is the team’s biggest concern. Their team strength is they have very well prepared seniors. They have not had many meets yet but they have many goals they plan on reaching. Coach Durham and the team are looking forward to state. State will be in November at Detweiller Park in Peoria. By: Daniel Maher, Reporter Coach Knaggs has a positive outlook for this year’s girls’ golf team and believes the girls are one of the best groups he has ever had. Coach Knaggs thinks the best thing about this year’s team is that the girls all work very hard at what they do. ―They are willing to improve their skills and never give up,‖ Coach Knaggs said. Coach Knaggs believes that his better players are the leaders of the team and can set a good example for the younger members. At press time, their record was 3-5. Boys Golf Swings for State By: Daniel Maher, Reporter One of the biggest keys for this year’s boys’ golf team on their quest for state is experience. Coach Wood says his team’s biggest strength is that he has a lot of players returning from last year that are going to play a vital role to the team’s success.
