The Assembly, made up of equal numbers of Ministers and Ruling Elders, meets every two years. The Assembly took several historic actions including choosing female Co-Moderators who will represent the church publically for the next two years, adding the Belhar Confession from South Africa which grew out of the struggle against apartheid to the Book of Confessions, and electing the first African-American Stated Clerk (basically the executive officer for the denomination). The main themes of the Assembly were reconciliation and justice. The assembly reaffirmed the PC(USA)’s long standing call for a two-state solution in IsraelPalestine and expressed concerns for Israel’s violations of Palestinians’ human rights. The Assembly voted 391-161 to challenge the church to pursue a process of trying to influence energy companies through stockholder engagement rather than outright divestment of energy stocks of companies focused on fossil fuels.
