By Russ Dunkel Happy Holidays to each and every one of you. I would like to wish you and your families all the Joy and Happiness of the Holiday season and hope that all is well. I am sure it has been a busy fall for all of you as it has been for me as well. We are all still waiting and watching to see what the overall effects of The Affordable Care Act will continue to be on Dentistry. This seems to be the great unknown and many of us already see that the way we have practiced dentistry is continually changing. Unfortunately, along with this the economy still seems to be recovering at a “Snail’s Pace’ which has affected many of our offices productivity. We can only hope that as we approach the second year of the WDA’s Public Awareness Campaign it convinces the public to seek the care they need. The WDA and the GMDA will continue to educate the public on the importance of good oral health and their responsibility to seek regular care. With regards to the public awareness campaign, the WDA House of Delegates (HOD) voted on Nov. 15th to reduce the cost of special assessment by 50% beginning in 2015. This is great news for everyone’s pocketbook! In addition, the WDA’s annual dues will still remain at $845 and the GMDA dues will be reduced by 10% for 2015. This puts the GMDA annual dues at $109, which is down from $121. These actions serve to emphasize both the WDA and the GMDA’s commitment to use member dues judiciously and to make membership affordable for every dentist. Another issue that is still a “Hot” topic both locally and nationally is the “Access to Care’ issue. I know many of us are continually addressing this issue as well as the WDA and GMDA. One of the ways that the GMDA addresses this topic is through the annual Give Kids a Smile. The Exam Day will take place on Saturday January 24, 2015 at Marquette Dental School from 8am-noon. Urgent care will be available that day as well as on treatment day on Friday February 6, 2015 for extended urgent care and immediate care needs. We need volunteers for both days and are taking volunteers now. Please contact our co-chairs, Dr. Cheska AveryStafford @ castafford@outlook.com or Dr. Kisha Arif-Holmes @ larifholmes@gmail.com. I again hope to see many of you at the Holiday Party on Thursday, December 4th at Westmoor Country Club. Dr. Angela Lueck and Dr. Lisa Teel are co-chairing the event again and I am sure it will be as great as last year’s. Proceeds from the raffle tickets will benefit the Bread of Healing charity clinic. I wish to offer a special congrats to Dr. Monica Hebl who was elected as Speaker of the WDA HOD for 2015 and to Dr. Mike Donohoo who received The WDA’s Pyramid of Pride Lifetime Achievement Award. Please see the Editor’s Update on the House of Delegates to see the remaining GMDA members who were also honored. A special thanks to the many volunteers that donate their time, talents and efforts to make the GMDA work. And in keeping with the holiday season, God Bless! Member Spotlight My name is Joe Nencka and I recently started serving on the Board of Directors of the Greater Milwaukee Dental Association in May. I am an Endodontist at Endodontic Associates and work at all three of our locations in Brookfield, Waukesha, and Hales Corners. I have the privilege of working with three great mentors, my dad, Dr. Dan Nencka, Dr. Greg Haasch and Dr. Todd Engel. I attended Marquette school of Dentistry and graduated in 2006. After dental school I served three years in the US Navy completing a general practice residency at Portsmouth Naval Hospital and serving two years as the dentist on the USS Nashville (LPD 13). In 2011 I earned my masters degree and certificate in endodontics at Marquette. I currently live in Wauwatosa with my wife Sara, a dental hygienist, two children Olivia (5), Will (3), and a Golden Retriever, Harley. I decided to serve as a board member of the GMDA so that I could give something back to the profession of dentistry. As a dental student I saw the value of joining ASDA and the American Dental Association. Recently as a board member and as an alternate at the WDA house of delegates I have been able to see firsthand how the GMDA, WDA and ADA have an impact on how I will be able to practice dentistry. There are many challenges facing dentistry and by being a member of the GMDA, WDA and ADA I will be able to help keep dentistry the great profession that it is. In closing it is an honor and privilege to serve as a board member of the GMDA. I look forward to seeing you at the next GMDA function! In the Spring of 2013, Katie Gast and Allison Schubert — current Marquette University School of Dentistry D4 and D3 respectively— were appointed to the ASDA Executive Board as the Ethics Chairs. Upon their first meeting to develop their committees goals, it was decided that Marquette University School of Dentistry should have a recognized and established SPEA Chapter. With the support of the American College of Dentists, MUSoD SPEA is able to provide students with ethical education and resources through lunch and learns and round table discussions and provide opportunities to enhance students’ professional skills. Calling all non-members The WDA and ADA membership market share is declining at a disconcerting rate. Membership recruitment and retention is important now more than ever. Each and every member can help turn the tide. GMDA leadership is sending the following letter to all GMDA non-renewing and non-members to let them know what organized dentistry has accomplished this past year. The letter will include contact information for the board of directors. You can find the contact info on the cover of the newsletter. If you know a non-member, please consider encouraging them to join and inviting them to a GMDA event or making sure they know how you value your membership. Chances are you have heard the following statement in your practice from a patient who did not want to proceed with recommended treatment: “Since it doesn’t bother me, I’m just going to hold off doing anything for now”. It can be frustrating when a patient chooses not to make a small financial or time investment to prevent potentially more serious dental problems. Be honest…does it bother you (maybe just a little bit) when the patient doesn’t take your advice knowing your recommendation was in the best interest of the patient’s overall oral health? Consider the parallels when making the decision as to whether or not to join organized dentistry. Tripartite membership involves the national, state and local levels of organized dentistry, including the American Dental Association, the Wisconsin Dental Association and the Greater Milwaukee Dental Association working together for those who live and/or practice in the Milwaukee area. All levels of organized dentistry serve to pursue that which is in the best interest of dentists and the patients we treat. These are some of the most recent efforts and accomplishments of organized dentistry in Wisconsin: Non-covered Services. The WDA lobbied on behalf of dentists and was able to pass legislation that prevents insurance companies from limiting fees dentist could charge for procedures not covered by their insurance plans. Community Water Fluoridation. The GMDA and the WDA recently (2013) argued on behalf of Milwaukee dentists (and patients) to defeat a proposal to eliminate fluoridated water in Milwaukee. Other Wisconsin communities are facing similar challenges, despite the CDC’s recognition that fluoridated water is one of the top ten public health achievements of the 20 th century. Marshfield Dental School. The WDA lobbied on behalf of dentists and was able to defeat plans for a second dental school in Wisconsin. This dental school was unnecessary to meet the state’s demands and was therefore unsupported by the majority of dentists in Wisconsin. Additionally, resources and support to the already existing, successful and accredited Marquette University School of Dentistry program would have decreased if the plans for the second dental school succeeded. Own Your Smile. The WDA and ADA recognized trends involving patient’s decreased use of dental services. The WDA proactively launched this public awareness campaign this year to educate patients on the importance and value of dental care. The first year of this three-year campaign is yielding impressive results1. This campaign was deliberated at length during the 2013 WDA House of Delegates meeting. A resolution was passed to support a three-year special dues assessment ($240 per year for a total of $720) considered necessary to produce quality messages for the campaign. The 2014 WDA House of Delegates revisited the resolution and approved a 50% reduction of this special assessment for the second year of the campaign. This action highlights the WDA’s commitment to using member’s resources judiciously and keeping member’s dues manageable. Do you like the way you practice dentistry? Do you want others making decisions which could negatively impact how you deliver care to your patients? If not, don’t wait until it “bothers you”. Please renew your tripartite membership, or become a new member if you have not done so in the past. Your membership strengthens the voice of the profession. There is a tremendous advantage when our associations can advocate on our behalf to legislators and honestly tell them they represent approximately 80% of the dentists2 in Wisconsin. If you have any questions please feel free to contact any of the GMDA members listed below. More importantly, please attend any event sponsored by the GMDA or WDA and become part of the discussion. Your input does make a difference in maintaining the integrity of this great profession. 1. 7668 Wisconsin Zip Code searches on Find a Dentist on MouthHealthy.org from January 1, 2014-September 30, 2014, representing a 539% increase over an estimated 1200 searches from CY2013. 2. The WDA has 76.1% membership market share according to ADA’s September 2014 Membership Reports.
