My dad got me a Z-50r when I was 9 and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Even on our ny quarter-acre lot I had a ton of fun just riding in the back yard. That started a long string of '80s and '90s Honda four-strokes for me. What's the worst bike you've owned? Best? The worst bike I owned was probably a 1984 Honda XL 250. My dad bought it for himself thinking that he'd be able to ride with me on my XR 80. But a er crashing hard a couple mes he decided that he'd hand it down to me. That bike did nothing well. Bad drum brakes, terrible suspension, and barely enough power to lo the front wheel. A close second would be my 2002 KTM 300exc. That bike would not go in a straight line if you clamped it to a train track. Thank goodness the new bikes are so much be er. Currently I'm on a 2014 KTM 300xc-w and it's definitely the best bike I've owned. What's your favorite riding spot? My favorite riding spot is probably s ll the trails we had when I was growing up. It was what we'd now call a "tolerated" riding area.....well most of the me. There was single-track, big hills, a sand MX track, and water crossings. The spots had all the obligatory names that I can s ll remember: The Swing, The Jump, 8-track, The Dunes, The Highway Hills, and the Dump. The last one was literally a town dump which was only good for giving you flats caused by all the sharp garbage peeking out of the dirt. Photo Credit: Jay Chi endon Tony Gasper Hometown: East Hampton, CT Club: Pathfinders Motorcycle Club Profession: Public School Superintendent Where are some of the best places you've ridden? Been on any dirt bike adventures? Trail from Oklahoma to the Pacific coast in Oregon on my adventure bike. Trip of a life me! If you ride the NETRA Turkey Run and Enduro series like I do, you are treated to some of the best trails in the northWhat events do you plan on riding this season? east. I've had some of the most fun on a dirtbike at the Snow For the 2016 season, I'm looking forward to (hopefully) a lot Run, Thrill-n-Chill, the first few Tom Noble enduros and, of of seat me. If any clubs put on me-keeping enduros I'll course, the Pathfinders' Dam Good events (of which I'm a definitely do those. I've never done the Ammo or Classic turmember). I've also had fun ge ng my backside handed to key runs so I'd like to get to those. I show up and ride slow in me at other NETRA events in which the challenge to yourself the Sportsman class hare scrambles every once in a while is the best and most rewarding part. Outside of New Engtoo. Some friends and I are planning a trip to Michigan this land, the Hammer Run is a great me. I've been fortunate to summer and that's what I'm looking forward to the most. also ride in Baja and Costa Rica along with a bunch of trips You've been part of the NETRA administra ve team for a down south to places like Ha ield-McCoy and Brushy Mounwhile. Explain why you got involved. tain. My biggest trip was 1,800 miles on the Trans-America Tony aboard his KTM 950 on the Trans‐America Trail mo ng our excellent product. This year, there are over 80 NETRA events of all kinds: clinics, kids, long-distance, and compe on. There are lots and lots of dirtbike owners in New England that don't even know we exist. Bringing them into the NETRA family would only make us stronger. What do you see for the future of NETRA? near‐term? long‐ term? Across the long term, NETRA, like any organiza on, needs to make sure that we are serving the interests of our members. You can see this happening now in li le and big ways: the return of the Junior line to hare scrambles, the Vintage series, and this year's experiment with the sprint enduro format. All of this bodes well for us. I think that this will be my fourth year on the NETRA Board of Directors. For the first three years I served as Secretary. I've been on the Compe on Commi ee for about 8 or 9 years too. I thought that I'd finally go en myself off the Comp Commi ee but when I wasn't looking Andy Anthony added my name to the ballot. He owes me a beer for that! I volunteer my me to help with the leadership side of NETRA because I have a basic philosophy that says "Don't complain unless you're willing to do something about it." Similarly, I introduced a trail patrol rider safety program at Thomaston Dam and used to be a very ac ve volunteer for the RiderDown Founda on. What do you see as NETRA's strengths? Where do we need to improve? NETRA is a great organiza on and its people are the greatest asset. Everyone who holds a NETRA card should say to themselves "I am NETRA." This is the best part about us. If you see a need, want to help, want to lead, or just want to ride, there is room for you in the family. The recent addi on of the Vintage Series is a great example. A few members got together, saw a need, gave a bunch of their me, and now two years later we have a very popular and well-organized series providing a whole new avenue for dirtbike fun. The more you learn about the history of NETRA the more you will be apprecia ve of what our predecessors did for us out of the pure love of the sport and nothing else. However, two fairly simple changes would make us an even be er organiza on. Because we're 100% volunteer and run by a Board of Directors, some mes decisions can be a li le slow. I'd like to see if we can use some technology to help us with that. Addi onally, we can always do a be er job of pro- Thanks Tony! Closing thoughts? There's an old saying in leadership that you stand on the shoulders of those that have gone before you. That is certainly true for me as I take on the role of NETRA President. Chris Burton guided the associa on out of financial debt by making tough decisions that had to be made. Likewise, prior to Chris, the associa on was led effec vely by Jim Sherman. I'm excited about NETRA's future and honored to serve. 2015 Youth Camp par cipants at the Rummel Farm. This year’s camp filled up quickly with more than 50 riders ready to camp, learn, and ride. Many of NETRA’s most successful riders have a ended this clinic and are now returning the favor as instructors. Thank you for volunteering! What is Cystic Fibrosis? Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and progressively limits the ability to breathe. In people with CF, a defective gene causes a thick, buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs. In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria leading to infections, extensive lung damage and eventually, respiratory failure. In the pancreas, the mucus prevents the release of digestive enzymes that allow the body to break down food and absorb vital nutrients.
