Message from the Chamber of Commerce President
Welcome to one of the most beautiful
regions in the world. As a child I visited
the 1000 Islands and the memories of that
trip stayed with me into adulthood. As an
adult, our family then began to visit the
1000 Islands on a frequent basis and when
the opportunity presented itself we were
able to make this region our permanent
home.
As the President of the 1000 Islands
Gananoque Chamber of Commerce, a
local business owner and a resident of
both Gananoque and the Township of
Leeds and the Thousand Islands, I would
like to take the opportunity to welcome
you to our region.
There are so many things to see and do,
and many opportunities for those who
want to get out of the rat race and live
in paradise. The 1000 Islands represent
a unique opportunity to live and play in
a true natural wonder that is only a short
drive from Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal.
Enjoy your stay and we’ll see you again
soon!
Joseph Baptista
President
1000 Islands Gananoque Chamber of
Commerce
À l’âge adulte, notre famille a alors

Arts and Culture
The arts are alive and well in the 1000 Islands
area. In fact the scenery, lifestyle and
reasonable cost of living act like a magnet
attracting the artistic personality.
Performing Arts
May through November, the Springer
Theatre on the waterfront and the intimate
Firehall Theatre, both operated by the
Thousand Islands Playhouse, offer up major,
high calibre professional productions.
Thursday nights in July and August are made
special by a series of free outdoor concerts
in the Town Park, next to the Gananoque
Town Hall.
Over the winter, the Gananoque Concert
Association offers a lineup of professional
concerts at the Firehall Theatre. Numerous
other events, such as speakers’ series,
skating shows, Dreams in Motion productions
and year round casino, nightclub and
dinner theatre presentations are here for
your enjoyment.
Visual Arts
Confederation Sculpture Park, Ontario’s
largest outdoor art gallery is located
adjacent to the picturesque Gananoque
Town Hall. A 5 metre tall statue of St.
Lawrence has been erected atop the cliffs
of a small island 1 kilometre east of the 1000
Islands International Bridge. These are major
year round visible icons of the arts in the
region.
The area is also alive with artistic groups and
shows throughout the year. Visual Artists of
Gananoque and Area (VAGA), one of the
area’s largest art groups, operates its own
gallery on the waterfront all summer long.
Several smaller galleries in the region offer a
less diverse palette but exceptional quality
of artistic endeavour.
12
Other artists prefer to show off their talents
through a series of studios tours, where you
will meet the artisans in their studios. These
events, make for enjoyable getaways for
tourists, both winter and summer, as well as
being a very colourful thread in the fabric of
what makes this arts community so vibrant.
In 2014, the Arthur Child Heritage Museum
will be hosting three Seasonal Exhibits and
launching a new Permanent Exhibit in
the Tower. The Seasonal Exhibits include
“Through the Lens: The Photography and
Art of Lorne Prosser” from May 3rd – October
31st, showcasing the rich images captured
by Gananoques’ resident photographer/
artist from 1921 to late 1980’s as well
as signature works by his mentor Peter
McKenzie. 2014 is the 100th Anniversary
of the First World War. In partnership with
Gananoque Branch 92, Royal Canadian
Legion, we will host “Remembering WW1”,
May 3rd – August 31st, commemorating
the role played by Gananoques’ men and
women. From September 1st – October
31st we will welcome “Threadworks 2013:
Water”, a juried Needle Art exhibit. The
season begins with the launch of a new,
Permanent Exhibit in the Tower, overlooking
the River. Fully interactive, The Helm, will
afford visitors the experience of piloting
one of nine virtual cruises through the 1000
Islands. Visit our other permanent, 2nd floor
exhibits and experience 10,000 years of
1000 Islands history from the glaciers to the
mid 20th century. The Canadiana Gift Shop
is brimming with new lines and Canadian
made gifts and mementos. Admission by
Donation, the Museum is Open Daily from
May through October, from 10:00 am.
Most of these activities are listed in the
Calendar of Events.

par Dreams in Motion. Le casino et les
cabarets vous accueillent l’année durant.
Gananoque offre aussi des forfaits souperthéâtre.
Arts Visuels
of Gananoque and Area (VAGA), un
saisonnières comprennent «Through the Lens:
The Photography and Art of Lorne Prosser» du
3 mai au 31 octobre, présentant les images
riches capturés par le photographe/artiste
résident de Gananoques de 1921 à fin 1980,
ainsi que les travaux caractéristiques de son
mentor Peter McKenzie.
«Threadworks
2013: Water», un exposé de Needle Art. La
saison commence avec le lancement d’une
nouvelle exposition permanente dans la Tour,
qui domine le fleuve. Entièrement interactif,
The Helm, offrira aux visiteurs l’expérience

let’s not forget fishing! Guides and charter
services are available.

communautés ou dans des endroits isolés,
se prêtent à la baignade. N’oublions pas
la pêche! La location de bateaux et les
services d’un guide sont disponibles. Si

Parks, Swimming, Picnics
St.
Lawrence
Islands
National
Park,
established in 1904 as the first national
park east of the Rockies, works to promote
sustainable recreation, while protecting the
unique ecosystem. The park is a key regional
partner in the Frontenac Arch Biosphere
Reserve, which received official designation
in 2002 by the U.N. The park consists of 20
islands between Kingston and Brockville and
several mainland properties.
The Visitor’s Centre at Mallorytown Landing
provides an introduction to the park, with
interpretive programs, exhibits and activities.
Charleston Lake Provincial Park offers
everything from a wilderness experience
to organized recreational activities for the
family, as well as a picnic area and 2 sandy
beaches.
The ecology of Charleston Lake Provincial
Park is extremely complex. Almost all of
the forest regions of eastern North America
intersect in the Biosphere Reserve. The
landforms here, as well as the river, become
corridors for the short and long term migration
of plants and animals. As a result, the diversity
of the biology and ecology in this park is
astounding. The number of species is in the
top three in Canada, and the diversity of
the geographical ranges of the species is
extraordinary.
Gananoque offers many prime locations
for picnics. Gananoque’s Town Park, which
surrounds town hall, has picnic tables, ball
diamond, soccer fields and washrooms. It is
the host to the Thursday night concert series
held during the summer months. Located
on Stone Street North past the Kinsmen Hall,
there are picnic tables and cook stoves.
20
The newly constructed Gananoque BMX
Track is situated behind the Recreation
Centre and adjacent to the Gananoque
Skateboard Park which is located on King
Street East.
Joel Stone Heritage Park, located on Water
Street, has bike parking along with a beach,
splash pad, swim platform, picnic tables
and public washrooms. The swim area is not
supervised. If you want to hit a few balls, a
tennis court is located outside the Recreation
Centre.
Kendrick’s Park, near Lyndhurst, on Beverly
Lake offers swimming, change rooms,
washrooms, pavilions, soccer field and
children’s playground. Also, there is the
smaller Furnace Falls Park in Lyndhurst, The
Bay of St. Lawrence Park and Rockport Park
at the Rockport Recreation Centre where
you can find playground equipment.
Centennial Park, located in Seeley’s Bay on
the Rideau Canal, sports a ball diamond,
washrooms/shower
facilities,
pavilion,
playground, multi-purpose court for tennis,
basketball, volleyball and badminton and
municipal docking at the recently expanded
marina.
Jerry Park in Lansdowne offers two ball
diamonds, a tennis court, basketball court,
skateboard park and playground.
On the south side of the 1000 Islands
Parkway there are many natural picnic sites
overlooking the magnificent St. Lawrence
River. Get out your blankets or lawn chair and
have lunch with a view! Please remember to
leave these tranquil spots as clean as you
found them.

Parcs, nage, pique-niques

pleasures of local life that are available
here all year round.
You are guaranteed to have fun at Frostfest
in Seeley’s Bay, with parades, dances,

instead of a bowling ball.
In June, car fans can enjoy the Lions Club
Cruise-in at Gananoque Town Park which
showcases meticulously restored vintage
vehicles.
In July, the 150th annual Lansdowne Fair
is a grand tradition to be enjoyed by city
and country folk alike. One of the largest
agricultural fairs in Eastern Ontario, it boasts
a midway, competitions, entertainment,
demolition derby and the
crowning
of a fair king and queen. Like ribs? The
barbecued kind that is. In Gananoque, it is
the month for The 1000 Islands Ribfest in the
town park. It’s your once yearly chance to
sample some of the world’s tastiest, mouth-

watering rib recipes and vote for your
favourite.
Come in August and you can celebrate
Rockport’s role in Prohibition Days with live
music, dancing, a 1920’s fashion show and
a speakeasy.
In the village of Lyndhurst, September is all
about the unique Turkey Fair. You can “talk
turkey” at talent shows, have fun at a street
party and experience an unforgettable
Decorate the Turkey Contest. Note- it’s
not a live turkey! Lyndhurst also boasts the
oldest stone bridge in Ontario. As well,
the village of Rockport invites artists from
all corners of the world to take part in the
annual International Plein Air Paint Out.
The 6th annual Jammin‘ in the 1000
Islands takes place in October. Enjoy live
jazz, swing and blues music at venues
throughout Gananoque providing 3 days
of amazing entertainment.
November has several communities

l’annuel Paint Out International Plein Air.
Le 6e festival annuel Jammin’ in the 1000

Shopping in the Area | Magasinage dans la région
If you need it or want it, you can get it in
Gananoque and the Township of Leeds
and the Thousand Islands.
Gananoque, with its 5000 plus population
provides a hub for commercial activity in
its revitalized downtown. King Street has
supermarkets, drug stores, clothing and
department stores to supply your routine
needs. There is also a fine selection of
shops selling those special items which
enhance your lifestyle, from exotic import
to fine giftware, clothing, jewellery and
antiques. But don’t just limit your search for
that special item to the main commercial
area, incorporate the Township into your
day!
The surrounding villages of Lansdowne,
Lyndhurst, Rockport and Seeley’s Bay have
their own unique and special shopping
opportunities. And don’t forget that this is
largely a rural community. Many shops of
interest can be found along the byways
that connect the various villages.
For those looking for the colour of local
handcrafts and art, with the opportunity
to meet and talk to the craftsperson, the
area has numerous fairs throughout the
entire year.
Fresh, local produce is available. If you
want to meet the producers on their home
turf, watch for the roadside farm signs. Visit
“Local Flavours”, at www.localflavours.
org, where you will find a map detailing
the locations of its’ members. Farmer
markets are also held in Lansdowne and
Gananoque, every Friday and Thursday
respectively.
Most of these activities are listed in the
Calendar of Events.

Local Flavours» www.localflavours.org.

Just a Short Drive | Excursions tout prés
Gananoque is the central destination that
offers you endless exploring opportunities
that are just a short drive away.
Gananoque est votre destination centrale
ou les possibilités d’aventures sont
interminables.
To the west is Kingston, the Limestone City.
Highway 2 takes you into the beautiful
downtown core. A visit to Fort Henry is a
must for everyone. The fort is open daily,
and offers their world famous sunset
ceremonies on Wednesday evenings
during July and August. While you are
there consider a boat cruise with Kingston
1000 Islands Cruises, operating daily from
May through October. Travel the Rideau
Heritage Route and visit one of Canada’s
UNESCO world heritage sites, the Rideau
Canal.
Canada.
Heading east, drive along the scenic 1000
Islands Parkway and you will reach the
city of Brockville that was named after the
Canadian war hero Sir Major Isaac Brock.
Enjoy shopping, dining and relaxing in its
waterfront community. Go exploring in a
museum or have a picnic lunch. Continue
your travels to Morrisburg and step back in
the time at Upper Canada Village.
To the north you will find Ottawa, our
nation’s capital. There are many things
to see and do. A must visit is Parliament
Hill where guided tours are offered daily.
Wander through the Byward Market, one
of Canada’s oldest public markets.
44
guerre canadien, Sir Major Isaac Brock.
Canada.

Riverquest Aquatarium
The Aquatarium will inspire all ages to
further explore the 1000 Islands region. The
26,000 square-foot Discovery Hall contains
ever-changing family activities that make
every visit different. For example, during a
showcase film in the interactive theatre,
you will discover, through live video feed,
a diver exploring a shipwreck. You will be
able to ask questions and share in the
underwater experience.
You will be able to become a TV
weatherman
and
read
from
the
teleprompter
as weather is
projected
on
a blue screen
background.
Send clips of your
performance to
family and friends. Visit a special river otter
installation that brings these amusing and
acrobatic creatures up close.
BROCKVILLE, City of the 1000 Islands
Brockville is considered the eastern
gateway to the 1000 Islands. As one of the
oldest and most charming cities in Ontario,
Brockville attracts visitors looking for a
46
relaxing way to spend some time near
the St. Lawrence River while enjoying
Brockville’s historic downtown setting. The
city’s roots trace back to just after the
American Revolution when displaced
Loyalist refugees settled and founded
Brockville.
Travel to Brockville and venture into our
historic past with a tour of Canada’s first
railway tunnel. Stroll along one of the most
accessible waterfronts in the 1000 Islands to
view North America’s great inland shipping
route where gigantic
cargo vessels weave
their way through the
Brockville Islands.
Take in an evening of
music or live theatre
at the Brockville Arts Centre or do some
shopping in one or all of our fabulous
boutiques, antique shops or art galleries
on King Street. Brockville offers several
excellent dining options in the surrounding
community including several choices
in the downtown. Visitors stopping by
Brockville have plenty of interesting sites to
see including its anchor attraction opening
in 2014, The Aquatarium.
