Empower DC - Reform CCHD Now
District of Columbia Grassroots Empowerment Project (Empower DC) http://www.empowerdc.org CCHD Grant: $50,000 The Problem: • Empower DC promotes abortion and homosexuality on its website • Supported the publication of a girl’s guide that explains how to get away with certain crimes, such as being in possession of illegal drugs, having sex in a car, and prostituting yourself. • Empower DC created and uploaded a video on YouTube, illustrating its participation in the Greater DC People’s Movement Assembly, highlighting its support for LGBT “rights.” The Response: After contacting the local diocese with initial findings in July, American Life League received the following response: “I have communicated my concerns regarding this particular designated grantee to the CCHD staff at the USCCB. “ ALL scheduled a meeting with the Executive Director of National CCHD to discuss the report. The meeting was subsequently cancelled by CCHD with the explanation, “we see no reason to meet at this time.” http://www.usccb.org/about/catholic-campaign-for-human-development/upload/2011-2012-CCHD-Grantee-List.pdf An October 2011 entry on Empower DC’s blog published and encouraged the downloading and distribution of a guide for youth that instructs young people on how to get away with certain crimes, such as trespassing and prostitution. http://www.grassrootsmediaproject.org/2011/10/youth-speak-our-about-the-choice-between-incarceration-and-social-services/ The document made available on Empower DC’s blog, “Hey Grrl! What Time Is It? Time to Know Your Rights!!” claims to be a common-sense guide for young girls to protect themselves from being abused by the police. However, the guide explains what to do if you are in possession of drugs, having sex in a car, and prostituting themselves. http://www.grassrootsmediaproject.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/HEY-GRRL.pdf Page 9 explains that while trespassing, one should have a look-out, and that if one is having car sex to make sure the windows are tinted and to “get in-get out.” Page 10 explains what to do while prostituting and while in possession of illegal drugs. Empower DC is an “anchor organization” for the Greater DC People’s Movement Assembly. http://peoplesmovementassembly.org/node/75 The Greater DC People’s Movement Assembly adopted support for homosexual activism as a priority. http://peoplesmovementassembly.org/node/76 Empower DC created and uploaded a video on YouTube, illustrating its participation in the Greater DC People’s Movement Assembly, highlighting its support for LGBT “rights.” http://youtu.be/r_Ll4JYI_hQ A June 2011 entry on Empower DC’s blog announced a writing workshop for LGBT youth. http://www.grassrootsmediaproject.org/2011/06/free-summer-writing-workshop-for-lgbtq-youth/ An April 2011 entry on Empower DC’s blog, “Grassroots Media DC,” expressed its disapproval for a budget deal because it reinstated a ban on abortion funding. http://www.grassrootsmediaproject.org/2011/04/a-better-budget-is-possible-at-least-in-the-district-of-colubmia/ An October 2011 entry on Empower DC’s blog called for a Walmart-free DC, because Walmart refuses to support homosexuality. http://www.grassrootsmediaproject.org/2011/10/dc-still-walmart-free/
