And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’” The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. 9 10 Genesis 2:16-17 (NAS) The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.” Genesis 1:26 (NAS) Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” God created man with freedom as God has freedom of choice but man has boundaries within freedom that God does not have … 11 The boundaries of freedom opened the door for the “freedom to “choose” … Then comes “temptation” and an opportunity to “choose” obedience or rebellion against God … Temptation from Satan was and is an attempt to create distrust of God … Temptation is a combination of lies and half-truths … “…you will not die” “…your eyes will be opened when you eat the fruit” Satan was totally correct in saying to Eve that she will not die which is a half truth referring not to physical death but to spiritual death … 12 The truth about the nature of temptation ~ a combination of Satan’s lies and half-truths … 1. “…you will not die” a. Satan was totally correct in saying to Eve that she will not die which is a half truth referring not to physical death but to spiritual death … b. Temptation accepted becomes a separation of man from God as the boundaries for living were violated … c. Response to temptation is a statement about the depth of trust and love for God … d. Accepting temptation runs crosswise to what God wanted from a creation that He gave full capacity to “choose” between His love or His creation’s self focused love … 13 The truth about the nature of temptation ~ a combination of Satan’s lies and half-truths … 2. “…your eyes will be opened when you eat the fruit, and you will be like God knowing good and evil.” a. Satan was totally correct in saying to Eve that her “eyes would be opened …” b. The consequences of Eve and then Adam opening their eyes by accepting the half truth of Satan’s “promise” was in no way what they had wanted nor expected nor hoped for … c. Then comes the outright lie that Eve and Adam would be “like God” in their accepting Satan’s temptation. 14 Eve’s judgement was that … “…the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise.” After hearing Satan’s bold lies, Eve experiences three forms of temptation that we experience even now … 1 John 2:16 (Holman) ~ “For everything that belongs to the world — the (1) lust of the flesh, the (2) lust of the eyes, and the (3) pride in one’s lifestyle — is not from the Father, but is from the world. 15 The everyday challenge we must see as reality … When any or all of the three thoughts John describe enter our mind, we have to battle them as soon as they appear … The consequences of recognizing and acknowledging the lies John describes are real … Quickly recognizing the temptations we confront every day are actually lies straight from Satan, the more likely it is that we will defeat sin before temptations become actions. 16 Reality Satan uses lies and half-truths to tempt us Deflection, Blame, Shame ~ Our Default Responses to Our Sin God’s Promises Overcome the Power of Evil and Sin Genesis 3:7-13 (NAS) 17 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings. They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” He said, “I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.” And He [God] said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” Deliberate sin will open eyes that are actually the eyes of our conscience that tells the should there is something wrong with the actions I have taken … Deflection Adam and Eve attempted to deflect their sin by hiding in the forest … A natural response when we know we have disappointed God with our actions. Blame Adam ~ Eve and God made me do it … Eve ~ that evil serpent Shame There is shame when when our actions are in disobedience of God’s Law for life which began with an obedient lifestyle … The act of covering themselves is a symbolic expression of shame that comes with sin … 18 Deliberate sin will open eyes that are actually the eyes of our conscience that tells the should there is something wrong with the actions I have taken … 19 Deflection Adam and Eve attempted to deflect their sin by hiding in the forest … A natural response when we know we have disappointed God with our actions. Blame Adam ~ Eve and God made me do it … Eve ~ that evil serpent Shame There is shame when when our actions are in disobedience of God’s Law for life which began with an obedient lifestyle … The act of covering themselves is a symbolic expression of shame that comes with sin … 20 Reality Satan uses lies and half-truths to tempt us Deflection, Blame, Shame ~ Our Default Responses to Our Sin God’s Promises Overcome the Power of Evil and Sin 21 Genesis 3:14-15 (NAS) The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you will go, And dust you will eat All the days of your life; And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.” 22 Genesis 3:16 (NAS) To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you.” 23 Genesis 3:17-19 (NAS) Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’; Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life. “Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you will eat the plants of the field; By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return.” 24 Consequences ~ Then and Now 25 Genesis 3:20-21 (NAS) Now the man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them. Eve was first named “woman” by the man, “Adam” (1:23) … The name “Adam” (formed from the ground) is first mentioned in 2:20 … After the sin of disobeying God, Adam named the woman “Eve” which is a prophetic name meaning “mother of all the living” (1:20) … The name Adam gave the woman was a picture of her destiny, to be the mother of all future humans throughout world history … 26 Genesis 3:20-21 (NAS) Now the man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them. God’s making garments for Adam and Eve, is a clear principle that lasts through this day … Marcus Dods, The Book of Genesis, page 25 … “… he [Adam] had to learn that sin could be covered not by a bunch of leaves snatched from a bush as he passed by and that would grow again next year, but only by pain and blood” The picture of what would cover sin of Adam and Eve’s descendants was the sacrifice of pure animals and ultimately the sacrifice and blood of a Messiah, the Son of God, that covers our sin this day and every day of life to come. 27 Genesis 3:22 (NAS) Then the Lord God said, “ Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever” — The experience of Adam proves one important principle … “like” “with” God … Man’s happiness does not consist in being God as much as it depends on being Psalm 16:11 ~ “You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever.” 28 Genesis 3:23 (NAS) … therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life. Imperfect, disobedient man can never enjoy the purity of what he had at his beginning … A life warning about the consequences of sin, the “after-sin” is never as good as the “before sin” … Adam and Eve were the first to experience the consequences of pursuing that which one believes is better than the provisions of the Lord God Almighty … The experience of Adam and Eve are worth noting in my life and in fact in all our lives. 29 “Rebellion against God results in suffering and death, but confession secures His gracious provisions. This section [Chapter 3] explains why human beings toil and agonize all their lives and finally die. Sin is responsible, and only the removal of sin will end this condition. God is a Savior as well as a judge in [Chapter 3]. Moses introduced the way of covering sin, namely, through the death of an innocent substitute. Consequently there is hope in the midst of tragedy.” Steve Davis, “Stories of the Fall in the Ancient Near East” 30 FOR AS A PERSON THINKS WITHIN HIMSELF, SO HE IS.
